This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

It can hardly be disputed that the theories put forth in this book are among the most important in the history of modern science. [Japanese Moga / Modan Garu, or "Modern Girls"]. [Original Ink Drawings]
Late Taisho / early Show era (1920s). Very good. Oblong folio (225 x 195 mm). 30 leaves, stitched (modern threading). Preserved in mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. Highly curious Japanese manuscript produced during the Roaring Twenties, being an amalgamation of Westernized and traditional Japanese fashion. Our manuscript was no doubt created by one of the Modan Garu (shortened to Moga), or "modern girls," who followed Westernized fashions and lifestyles. These Moga were Japan's equivalent of America's Flappers, Germany's Neue Frauen, France's Garconnes, and China's Modeng Xiaojie. The advent of the "modern girl" in Japanese society cannot be overestimated: Moga were financially and emotionally independent, consumeristic, and sexually liberated. Our manuscript contains depictions of Moga in many attitudes, including swimming in Western bathing suits, golfing in the manner of Jordon Baker, playing tennis, drinking from wine glasses and tea mugs, eating with forks, wearing jaunty Flapper hats, off-the-shoulder dresses, lipstick, and much more. Children are also in abundance: some of the girls wear short dresses and pumps, with bows in their hair, others wear traditional Japanese costume. Some of the men wear high-collared shirts and "Dick Tracy" hats, others have mustaches. Interspersed throughout are depictions of traditional Japanese kimono and geta, as well as illustrations of a variety of subjects. Clearly an amaturish production, this is a manuscript with great charm, and particularly interesting in that the tensions between "old" and "new" Japan are graphicall … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUCHER, Lucien.
Paris: Marcel Seheur, 1920. Paris: Marcel Seheur,, 1920. Quarto. Original cream paper-covered boards with title in red and black and mounted pochoir illustration to the front board, grey marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom cloth solander box. 43 leaves of light card each mounted on calque paper stubs, 21 with full-page hand-coloured wood-engraved illustrations, one with a double-page hand-coloured panorama of the camp, the remaining text leaves with decorative borders all with tonal tints or spot colour. A few splash marks to spine of box, pale toning to periphery of covers, light bump to one corner. An excellent copy. First and only edition, number 72 of 175 copies "sur papier de luxe". An extremely delicately produced piece, with each leaf mounted on a thin paper stub, unsurprisingly just five copies on OCLC - BnF, Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Münster, Dartmouth College, Yale, and NLA - and no copies traced at auction. A superb eyewitness record, in words and pictures, of incarceration at the prisoner of war camp at Merseburg in Saxony, written, illustrated and published by three inmates. In his preface Mac-Orlan justly privileges Boucher's "beautiful, melancholy and malicious" images, for giving an impression of the camp that is "so striking and so honest as to be almost inexplicable [si saisissante et si loyale qu'elle semble inexplicable]", singling out in particular that of "the closed washroom door, with enamelled iron water jugs smudged with black spots, awaiting, like fox terriers in front of a rat, opening hour [la porte des lavabos fermés, les brocs-à-ea … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Gardens; Italian Gardens; Parrish, Maxfield]; Wharton Edith
New York: The Century Co, 1920. A reissue of the first edition, identical in format and appearance. Profusely illustrated with 52 illustrations, 27 of which are either colourplates or half-tones by Maxfield Parrish, the rest being photographs and drawings by E. Denison, Malcolm Fraser and C. A. Vanderhof. Tall 8vo, publisher's original dark forest green cloth decorated and lettered in gilt on the spine, cover design by Decorative Designers with elaborate pictorial decorations after Maxfield Parrish in an all over design, upper cover stamped in gilt and blocked in light green, blue, purple, gilt and rust, showing a villa garden. 270 pp. A very handsome copy, with some mellowing to the decoration and lettering on the spine panel. Otherwise a very clean and bright copy, the upper cover decoration being very well preserved, the interior is very fresh and essentially flawless. A VERY HANDSOME COPY OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND SOUGHT AFTER WORK. One of the most well-written books on Italian garden design. The combination of Wharton's liquid descriptions and Parrish's romantic paintings, makes for an extremely delightful book. Special attention is given to the gardens found at Florentine, Sienese and Roman villas. The relationship of the buildings to the natural surroundings is explored in detail. "The Italian garden does not exist for its flowers; its flowers exist for it: they are a late and infrequent adjunct to its beauties, a parenthetical grace counting only as one more touch in the general effect of enchantment. This is no doubt partly explained by the d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Riviere & Son
1920. Offered here is a rare and unusual collection of designs and drawings, the work of what appears to be a single binder for Riviere & Son, from the late 1920's, with a very few possibly later. There are 8 large designs for spines with some drawings, tool impressions, two of which are in color; 4 smaller designs for spines; 7 small "snippets" of tooling designs; 7 front cover designs (some drawings, some with tool impressions); 26 rubbings of bindings (covers, spines, etc., various sizes); 4 miscellaneous: a sheet of oasis leather samples used for the Andrew Lang Fairy Books, tool roll samples for a set of Shakespeare, a small piece of paper with what looks to be time studies for various bindings (e.g. ìΩ Plain 50 minî), spine design samples from various sets of English authors, sheet with various pictorial tools used and which authors, titles, etc. to use them (e.g. a witch on a broom and ìThe Arthur Rackham Fairy Bookî). A variety of paper has been used in these examples, some thicker, but much of it quite fine, i.e. tissue quality. Some small tears and browning from being folded for decades, but overall, most pieces in nice shape. A most scarce archive of original bookbinding records from one of the most famous bookbinding companies in the history of modern bookbinding.

HAMILTON, Sir Ian.
New York: George H. Doran Company, 1920. New York: George H. Doran Company,, 1920. 2 volumes, octavo. Original mid-red cloth, title gilt to spines, publisher's device in blind to the front boards. Tissue-guarded frontispiece, and 9 other plates to each, folding map at rear of each, and a map to the front pastedown of volume I. Somewhat rubbed, spine sunned, front hinges of both volumes a little loose, sometime repaired, the frontispiece to volume I evidently having been loose at some point, light chipping to the fore-edge, now reattached, light browning throughout, the plates a little mottled with occasional hygroscopic staining at the corners, but remains a very good set. First US edition, same year as the UK first. Account of the controversial Dardanelles Campaign by its much disparaged commander: "fascinating and brilliantly-written … invaluable" (Falls), to which Lengel adds, "detailed, readable, and indispensable". This copy an excellent association copy with the ownership inscriptions of Commander William D. Puleston, dated 1923, to the front free endpapers, with the author's subsequent presentation inscriptions. In the first volume Hamilton has inscribed at length on the half-title; "For Captain William D. Puleston, U.S. Navy from one who has always admired his energy and his character; from the Writer of the Diary - Ian Hamilton, Washington - Sept. 21st 1930", and in the second has appended his subscription to Puleston's inscription "from the writer, Ian Hamilton, General". Lisboa: [Rio de] Janeiro: Portvgalia [1920]. The only work of poetry by the openly gay amateur philosopher who joined Pessoa's circle of modernist writers in 1915. Leal is best known for his Sodoma Divinisada, published in 1923, but he also dabbled in the occult and was briefly involved with Aleister Crowley ("Met Leal. Don't like him. There's something definitely wrong about him." See Castro, Fernando Pessoa's Modernity Without Frontiers: Influences, Dialogues, Responses.) He was also involved for a time with Gabriele d'Annunzio and Filippo Marinetti and other "ultra- Futurists" and was the founder of a Paracletian Church, with himself as the self-designated Henoch, prophet of the Holy Ghost and Divine Paraclete. See da Silva, Ultra-Futurism, Occultism and Queer Politics. This collection of poems relates to the demonic powers and the force of darkness that became subjects of interest to the surrealists. Very good, light wear and yellowing to covers, spine is fragile with partial splitting, light spotting, photographic frontispiece of the author. Rare. [Attributes: First Edition]

Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Einstein, Albert, trans. Robert W. Lawson
Methuen & Co, 1920. First edition (preceding the American edition, published by Henry Holt) of the authorized translation into English of a "popular exposition" of Einstein's theory of relativity in its two forms. An unusually good first-state dust-wrapper, albeit with some restorations to the extremities, for this title; altogether quite rare thus. Very good. Appendix III, published here for the first time, is the text of a letter written to Lawson about the experimental confirmation of the theory. With an ownership signature (Oxford, 1920) on the front paste-down. Einstein's theories of relativity mark the turning-point from Newtonian to modern physics. So substantial was their effect that an explanation "for the average reader" was thought necessary. Beginning with Euclidean geometry, Einstein - in Lawson's good modern English - takes us stewpise to a point of practical understanding of the revolution Einstein began in 1905, which carried us through the nuclear age and into the world of modern astronomy, with LIGO's confirmation of the principles of general relativity in 2015-2016 (the documentation of a gravitational wave caused by the merging of two black holes: the chirp heard 'round the world).
