Kemble, E. W.
n.p. n.p., n.d., 1920's. Stiff card. An original pen and ink sketch by Edward Winsor Kemble produced for "The Youth's Companion", an early 20th century juvenile journal. The sketch 6½ by 8½ inches and with printer's marks along the bottom. Titled in pencil: "De Ox and de Frog". On the reverse is a sticker noting that the sketch has been published by The Youth's Companion as well as a notation, "Original Art". The Tale of the Ox and the Frog appears in AEsop, also in La Fontaine and possibly in Uncle Ned's Old Tales Retold. It describes a mother frog inflating herself to the point of bursting (and in some versions beyond that point) as she imitates the size of an ox. And indeed in Kemble's sketch we se a large chested female frog standing over a mushroom table addressing two frog-children. Cropped closely on the sides just touching the image else this is in very nice condition. Very good. Item #19162.

[Vernacular Photo Albums]
np: [ca. 1920s]. Oblong 64mo (4.5" by 3.25"). Commercial olive-green, faux-leather string-tied album. 12 gray leaves with 43 small photos adhered to rectos and versos, with 17 hand-drawn, colored border illustrations. About near fine overall, with a bit of external rubbing; leaves clean, if mildly warped. Colors vivid throughout. Very good. An uncommonly ornamented vernacular album, with intricate border designs on most pages in a variety of styles, borrowing considerable Art Deco and rococo influence. Most designs are primarily floral, though many involve geometric shapes, and in addition to the drawings, several borders also use a kind of silver foil. An impressively well-executed work of amateur design and illustration, on an intimate and charming scale.

1920. Sehr gut. Monograph "Roerich". 1939., Riga. Nicholas Roerich (/ˈrɛrɪk/; October 9, 1874 - December 13, 1947) - known also as Nikolai Konstantinovich Rerikh (Russian: Никола́й Константи́нович Ре́рих) - was a Russian painter, writer, archaeologist, theosophist, perceived by some in Russia as an enlightener,[1] philosopher, and public figure, who in his youth was influenced by a movement in Russian society around the spiritual. He was interested in hypnosis and other spiritual practices and his paintings are said to have hypnotic expression.[2][3] Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to a well-to-do notary public father of Baltic German ancestry and a Russian mother,[4] he lived in various places around the world until his death in Naggar,[5] Himachal Pradesh, India. Trained as an artist and a lawyer, his main interests were literature, philosophy, archaeology, and especially art. Roerich was a dedicated activist for the cause of preserving art and architecture during times of war. These are pattern books filled with colorful Art Deco designs, probably intended for textiles, created in the second half of the 1920s or the early 1930s. The original pochoir printed books were published in Paris in the 1930s; this set is a reproduction by Gakken Publishers of Tokyo from 1980. Volume 1 has the following sections: Primavera Floréal Suggestions Samarkande Papillons Volume 2 has the following sections: Formes et Couleurs Variations Or et Colours Kaleidoscope These books are filled with stunning, colorful designs. Each section listed above has 20 full-color plates. Some plates are a single design filling the page, others have multiple designs. Text on the plate pages is minimal, just a title for each plate in French and Japanese. The designs contain a variety of geometric, abstract and semi-abstract motifs executed in various colors, including nature-inspired figures such as birds and flowers. Back of Volume 2 has text in Japanese. Based on some quick online translation, it appears to be a history of art deco. Duvernois, Henri
Likely 1920s (it was found inserted into a copy of Morte la Bête -1926 - that Duvernois had given Edmond Roze, a theatrical director and producer and his wife Jeanne Silvain, an actress, in 1928). The sheets measure roughly 8.5 x 5.5 inches, are held together with a brass folding tack, labeled 'Acte III' on first page, and lightly written in pencil 'Mss of Henri Duvernois' - probably by Jeanne Silvain, who married an American after Roze's death at Auschwitz and came to live near Pittsburgh. Duvernois (1875-1937) is best known these days as a screenwriter but also published several plays in multiple acts through the 1920s and it is entirely conceivable that he gave a sample of a play to Roze to consider producing. We're not sure if this is part of a published work. Very Good.

France: Audios Marque Deposée, c. 1920s-1930s. Articulated ear trumpet in tortoiseshell patterned celluloid. The diameter of the mouth is 70mm, the length when closed is 140mm, and the length when fully extended is 300 mm. Audios Marque Deposée ear logo in blind. Superb condition, with just a little minor wear commensurate with use. An elegant telescoping ear trumpet produced by the French firm Audios, which specialised in hearing aids during the first half of the 20th century. Like many of their models, this example is made of celluloid designed to mimic tortoiseshell, though it appears from online records that this delicate telescoping model is much less common than the company's standard makes. This particular ear trumpet is in superb condition, particularly considering the delicate nature of its mouth and the telescoping sections. A superb example of early-20th century audiological design.

John Wisden
Hi, A set of 5 Wisdens, in a run from 1920 to 1924 all Paperback Wisdens. The books are in good+ condition, nothing mint but they are nice books. The books are all tightly bound, odd mark to the covers and some read feel, some faking to the spines. A nice enough set. More photos on request. Other sets of 1920-24 available on request.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HARDY, Thomas
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1920. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 21 volumes. A very nice, clean set in 3/4 burgundy morocco over maroon cloth boards, bound uniformly by Stikeman, with gilt spines. The front board of Volume I ("Tess") is detached, but present. Many corners show rubbing through the leather, but there are no "bumps" to speak of. Otherwise, apart from the occasional blemish, it's a nice, crisp, sturdy set with no foxing or markings, overall very good or better. Spine gilt is uniformly bright, and the spines are not at all faded, making for an excellent presentation. Pity about the front board of volume I, which could be repaired by a competent binder. Though there is no limitation statement or number on this set (bizarrely), it is one of 1250 copies of these complete works, most of which were issued in cloth. Though out of series, this is the preferred, handsomer binding.
