Dos Passos, John.
London: George Allen & Unwin, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed by Dos Passos on the Front flyleaf, with also, glued to the second (blank) flyleaf, is an 11-line handwritten letter to the same collector agreeing to sign some of his books, and instructing him where & when to send them (in Provincetown). The book itself is a fine copy, and apart from one small edge-tear to the fore-edge of page 19/20, and some light fading to the spine edges, has almost no wear. This is thanks to a beautiful copy of the original dust-jacket, which has only the slightest wear to the extremities, but is otherwise bright and intact. This is the first issue of the book, with the word "flat" obliterated on line 32 of page 35. Highly desirable copy of this highspot - Dos Passos' first book - based on his experiences in the Great War. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Einstein
henry holt. very good. Relativity, Albert Einstein. Henry Holt 1920. 1920 stated on title page. Front pastedown replaced with archival paper. Covers with very minor damage: gold on spine is greened, minor staining, pinhead dent to rear board. Corners firm, spine ends firm. No smell. No foxing or spotting. Facsimile dust jacket created by me so that I could print on thicker archival paper. This one will not tatter so easily over the years. Now in Brodart cover for extra protection. I also have two 1921 copies, second printings, if you want the same book for somewhat less money. Just ask me about them. They are also in this special dust jacket. And, I have a 1920 Principle of Relativity, translated by Saha and Bose in Calcutta. This is vanishingly rare and very valuable, so valuable I cannot list it with anything else on Ebay. It is above my limit. But if this is what you are looking for, we will work something out. I can wait and list it for you by itself, right at the limit. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

[Photography]: [Missionaries]: [Japan]
[ca. 1920-1931]: [Kyushu, Japan]. Oblong 4to. String-tied commecial album; black boards. Contains 57 gelatin-silver prints (of various sizes, including 8" by 10", 7.5" by 5", and smaller), most of which are adhesive-mounted (with several loose), plus 11 postcards depicting Kyushu Lutheran churches, and one bookmark. One photograph apparently perished; several others loosening from pages. Else apparently complete.Album edges moderately worn; one photo missing a chunk at edge. Most are lightly toned, but overall clean. Very good or better. Very good +. Well-assembled photo album compiled by an American Lutheran missionary to Japan, whose face appears consistently in the majority of the photographs. The island of Kyushu is home to several Lutheran schools and churches, including the Kyushu Gakuin (Kyushu Lutheran College), and the Janice James School, both of which are pictured here (having recently been built in the early 1900's). The Kyushu Lutheran mission was founded in 1893 by American missionaries; within several years they began building churches under the supervision of one Charles Lafayette Brown (1874-1921), and presumably the subjects pictured here with members of that particualr mission. The album features posed group photographs of large congregations - as large as roughly 150 - captioned with date and location in cities including Kurume, Kamamoto, and Saga; additionally included are many images of church services in progress, plus several family portraits of church members. While Christianity began to spread when Japan phased out its isolationist policies in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

DICKENS, Charles]
[London?], 1920. Thirteen proof sheets, each measuring just shy of 9" x 12". Each leaf contains the elaborate engraved cover illustration for a notable Dickens title. Nearly all of them are on greenish stock, while "Sketches by Boz" is on a cream stock. most show varying degrees of dust soiling at the extremities, and some minor chips and closed tears, but the illustrations and immediate area surroungding them are clean and bright. A real curiosity - the item was acquired with no background provided, and we cannot locate much information about any notable issue of these proof sheets. Perhaps they were issued as part of a large set of Dickens' works, or they could have been snatched by a former employee of Chapman and Hall? Regardless, the red cloth portfolio that houses them was produced no later than the 1920s or so, and bears some old soiling and staining to prove it. There is a modest applied paper label that simply reads " Charles Dickens Complete Set of 13 Proof Wrappers." Internally, laid in with the proofs is an engraving by Cruikshank of what looks to be a portrait of Dickens. A real curiosity that raises more questions than it answers. Regardless, certainly a set of 19th-century "avant la lettre" proofs of Dickens covers, which evoke the most attractive issues of his published works. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Angelina W. Grimke (1880-1958)
Boston: The Cornhill Company, (1920). 98, [6, (blank)]pp. First Edition. Cloth, gilt-lettered, papered boards. Spine gilt faded; light rubbing to head and tail; trifle foxing to preliminary leaves. Very good. Angelina W. Grimké (1880-1958), African-American female poet, reclusive celibate lesbian, born into the noted biracial Grimké family, with its strong social and community connections to South Carolina and Boston. Grimké's Rachel is widely accepted to be the first play written by, published for, and stage-produced by an African-American woman. Some critics have called the play unabashed antiracist propaganda, others have described it as semi-autobiographical, with strong parallels to Grimké's own life. With the support of the NAACP, the play was first staged in Washington, D.C., and shortly thereafter in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A three-act drama, Rachel is a tale of racism, of Northern prejudice and its vile effects. Set in an unnamed northern American city, between 1900 and 1910, the drama tells the story of the struggles of a young college-educated black woman who has adopted a black child. When ugly racism comes into the young boy's life, the horror of the experience causes unending nightmares for the child, and relentless mental anguish for Rachel. As a result, Rachel foreswears marriage and motherhood, yet vows to help care for black children everywhere. The play ends with Rachel unable to fight against racism, its oppressiveness creating within her an unsurmountable sense of futility, drawn into isolation, alone with her adopted child. Rare to commerce and a ver … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. This book is truly one of a kind. Only 500 ever made of this original. Got an excellent number, number 393. In excellent condition considering the age although spine is evident that it has wear. If you get this book no one you'll ever meet will probably ever be able to find another original regardless of how much money they have. From my understanding it has never been on the market place nor sold. A beautiful name Rose of the Flame Immortal. All offers will be reviewed but I won't consider super low offers. 1920. Published by Constable and Company Limited. Signed by Ronald Balfour to the limitation page, with a print run of 100, this being number 25. Original green textured cloth binding with gilt 'Omar' to front and head of spine and gilt 'Drawings by Ronald Balfour 1920' to tail of spine. Some light general discolouring to front and back, along with the odd minor spot. Spine faded and a little mottled. Binding tight. Gilt edging to upper face of page block, now a little dulled. Bookplate to front pastedown, designed by Edward Ardizzone, of Drusilla and Colin White. Some toning and spotting to pastedowns and endpapers but with only the odd, very minimal spot within the main text. Original two ribbons present and attached. Creases to the corners of two plates one coloured (opposite 25) and the other B&W (opposite 39). Thirty eight tipped in plates comprising of six full colour and thirty-two mainly black & white (some with hints of colour). Many further line drawings within the text. A beautiful book: although the illustrations have echoes of Beardsley, these images capture the elegance and to some degree, a sense of release and adventure following the end of The Great War. Suchbegriffe: Ludendorff, Hitler, Nsdap.

BLACK, Paul A
1920. Near Fine. Softcover. Small oblong octavo. String-tied cloth over flexible boards. A few leaves detached, some edgewear on the boards, but sound and very good. Over 200 images pertaining to Paul A. Black and his life in Kansas during his teens and early adulthood. A couple of images lacking but almost entirely intact and virtually all captioned in white ink. A very interesting vernacular album centered around an All-American boy from Kansas's life and travels. Includes many images of a ranch setting on horseback, play-acting in cowboy or Indian garb, of a pet wolf, as well as climbing telephone poles, skinny-dipping, in high school (with friends, various girls, running the high hurdles) in Kingman, Kansas, Includes several airplane photos, Boy Scout images, some photographs of WWI-era Navy and A.E.F. soldiers (possibly relatives). Includes travel images of hunting in Montana, and several of traveling in Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming, some appreciative images of California girls on the beach, one of a coy young lady in a bathtub, one of men posing with a spool of Western Electric wire, scenes from Wichita (including an air field), Independence, and Parsons, Kansas. Also includes railroad and construction photos. Most of the images seem to be from the nineteen teens, but a few interspersed or at the end are from his later life in the 1920s and 30s. A really pleasing album with a generous selection of interesting western scenes capturing the imagination and interests of an All-American boy from Kansas.

1920. Near Fine. Softcover. Oblong small quarto. Flexible black cloth boards with gilt "Scrap Album" on the front board, string-tied. Bookseller label from Chicago. Clipping about Florida affixed on first leaf, followed by 119 photographs. Various sizes, a few detached, slight wear to the boards, near fine. A photo album of better than average quality photographs, mostly of scenes in Florida between 1920 and 1924. All but a dozen or two of the photographs appear to be from Florida, mostly around Daytona and Ormand Beach. Most revolve around a single family who seemed to visit Florida annually, and display leisure activities (swimming in both ocean and rivers, fishing, beach scenes, horse-racing, children playing) and pictures of scenery including newly built vacation houses, girds laid out for development, and a sea shore hotel. A handful of images at the end of the album exhibit the family in northern winter scenes.

ROBINSON
1920. thanking her for her "suggestions which are good but rather difficult to carry out sufficiently as drawings. I am now guilty of a drawing of a 'Bunker Chair' which lifted a middle aged golfer over the bunker - through the air in the direction of the ball. I will keep your letter in case I may be able to adapt the idea later on ...", 1 side 8vo., The Copse, Cranleigh, Surrey headed paper, 4th October Heath Robinson's gentle personality was reflected in his drawings which poked fun at the pompous but were never cruel. The term "Heath Robinson" entered the popular language during the First World War as a description of any unnecessarily complex and implausible contrivance, much as "Rube Goldberg machines" came to be used in the US from the 1920s onwards as a term for similar efforts. "Heath Robinson contraption" is perhaps more often used in relation to temporary fixes using ingenuity and whatever is to hand, often string and tape, or unlikely cannibalisations.
