Bonfils Robert, Houville Gérard d'
SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1920. Condition: Like New. A PERFECT STATE. AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE. A COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. YEAR EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. YEAR UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Beautiful copy of this shirt in the collection "Modes and manners of today ' hui", the publication of the best of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, by artists the having made, at the top of their art. The project is supported by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. In order to support the revolution art and clothing of the roaring twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations of Georges Lepape. Before the reception to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose a similar shirt, with authors and various artists. In 1920, it is Robert Bonfils and Gérard of Paris that will provide Pierre Corrard elements to achieve the annual shirt. This shirt is like all the others in the series: under a cardboard fort, which the first dish is hit only titles and years, with, in its centre, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper that one illustrating against guard, and including the pattern was designed by the artist realizing the inner boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page containing the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, illustrated boards. A special care is given to the realization of these boards, from engraving to the passage of the stencils. The origin of our copy is exceptional: it comes directly from the Corrard fam … [Click Below for Full Description]

DICKENS, Charles
[London?], 1920. Thirteen proof sheets, each measuring just shy of 9" x 12". Each leaf contains the elaborate engraved cover illustration for a notable Dickens title. Nearly all of them are on greenish stock, while "Sketches by Boz" is on a cream stock. most show varying degrees of dust soiling at the extremities, and some minor chips and closed tears, but the illustrations and immediate area surroungding them are clean and bright. A real curiosity - the item was acquired with no background provided, and we cannot locate much information about any notable issue of these proof sheets. Perhaps they were issued as part of a large set of Dickens' works, or they could have been snatched by a former employee of Chapman and Hall? Regardless, the red cloth portfolio that houses them was produced no later than the 1920s or so, and bears some old soiling and staining to prove it. There is a modest applied paper label that simply reads " Charles Dickens Complete Set of 13 Proof Wrappers." Internally, laid in with the proofs is an engraving by Cruikshank of what looks to be a portrait of Dickens. A real curiosity that raises more questions than it answers. Regardless, certainly a set of 19th-century "avant la lettre" proofs of Dickens covers, which evoke the most attractive issues of his published works. Very good.

Zemenkov, Boris, Aleksandr Kraevskii, and Vadim Shershenevich
Kholodno [e.g. Moscow], 1920. Octavo (22 × 17.8 cm). Original staple-stitched stiff dark maroon wrappers; 32 pp. With two original linocut prints by Boris Zemenkov, as well as another, but faded design to rear wrapper. Owner inscription of Ippolit Sokolov (struck through). The glossy wrappers faded; spine rubbed; else still about very good. Rare Russian avant-garde anthology with contributions and artwork by Boris Zemenkov, an Expressionist who later joined the "Nichevoki" group. In the Russian context, "expressionism" saw itself as a new synthesis of various avant-garde tendencies and wished to unite the work of various fractions of Russian Futurism. Also contains eight "imaginist" poems by Aleksandr Kraevskii and a longer poem by Vadim Shershenevich. With two large urbanist original linocut prints by Boris Zemenkov, titled "Screetch" and "A car's honk." The place of publication is "Kholodno" ("Cold") and the date given is "XX-yi vek" (20th century). All copies we have seen were similarly faded; a variant in orange wrappers, printed in gold, is also known. This copy apparently belonged to Ippolit Sokolov (1902-1974), the Russian expressionist writer, who published poetry and nine brochures on or relating to expressionism. Getty 860. Turchinskii, p. 208. KVK, OCLC show copies at BnF, the British Library, Houghton, Amherst, and Getty. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Konstantinopol' (Istanbul): self-published (printed by Brat'ia Zellich), 1920. Octavo (19.8 × 13.9 cm). Original staple-stitched printed wrappers; 12 pp. Cancelled library stamp of the Russian State Lenin Library; else very good. A scarce and highly interesting manifesto by the "Ukrainian National Committee" in exile in Constantinople, which envisions Ukraine as part of a future federation of Great Russia, with regional autonomy over all Ukrainian lands, but as part of the pre-1917 imperial expanse. The Committee viewed the Bolsheviks and the separatists alike as its enemies; it rallied behind a call for "all land for the peasants" and a strong Eastern Europe in a pan-Slavist sense, with Russia as the official language of Ukraine, with a concerted attempt to avoid the "Germanization" and "Balkanization" of Ukraine. It was evidently an offshoot of the eponymous committee active in Paris (founded in 1919), having completely accepted the program of the latter group, as noted in the present work. The pamphlet also contains a short historical text on the Paris Ukrainian Committee and its political history and ideology. Its main demand: "Ukraine must be and will be in brotherly ties with a free democratic Russia" (p. 8). Finally, it concludes with an appeal to villagers and cossack groups, promising them regional autonomy within the proposed federative structure. Rare; no copies found in KVK or OCLC.

JULIO, Abbé [ Ernest Louis Houssay ].
Henri Durville, Paris, 1920. Hardcover. Small octavo. 604pp (+ivpp adverts) Contemporary yellow pebbled cloth with red titling and pentagram design to rear cover. Black and white frontispiece and alphabetic table, 28 colour plates, mostly of talismans, three black and white photographs. An extraordinary and scarce work by Abbe Julio (Ernest Louis Houssay, 1844-1912) an ordained French monk who left the Roman Catholic church and became involved in various neo-Catholic groups, principally l'Église catholique gallicane and l'Église Catholique Libre de France, and was also well known in occult circles of the time. Houssay, who wrote under the name Abbe Julio, practiced as a healer and hypnotist, who combined Christian Gnostic formulas with occult, theosophical and spiritualist thought in his practices. While he was a great believer in prayer, and decried the dangers of ceremonial magic, he had a strong belief in magic seals and talisman as amongst the most efficacious of the occultist's tools. "Le Livre Secret Des Grands Exorcismes Et Bénédictions" was first published in 1908, and is a remarkable collection, in many ways reminiscent of the grimoires of the preceding century, in that it offers a large number of prayers, Psalms, exorcisms (all in Latin), and talismans and seals, designed to do everything from curing wounds, snake bites, ailments and diseases and misfortunes of all sorts, to solving crimes and preventing murder and offering protection from ghosts, spirits of darkness, incubbi, succubi, vampires, and other things that go bump in the night. This, the third edition o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis, Sinclair
Harcourt Brace and Howe. 1920, First Edition, first issue with perfect type at folio on page 54 and 'may' on page 387. Hardcover. Very Good in a later issue dust jacket and custom blue morocco slipcase. Early fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and corners; 2 pinhole sized dents to the rear board; clean contents; sound binding. The jacket is likely from 1921 as it has 'Harcourt Brace and Co.' on the spine; it has the same image as the first (silhouette in front of the 'Rosebud Movie' billboard) and all of the advertised titles were published on or before 1921, when Harcourt Brace and Howe switched over to Harcourt Brace and Co. There is a blurb for 'Main Street' on the rear panel that notes 'Over 125,000 sold'. The price is $2.00. The jacket is still quite fresh, at least Very Good+: the spine panel is sunned just a touch, there is also very shallow chipping at the crown of the spine and the upper corners; finally, a single 1/2-inch closed snag to the top edge of the rear panel. DJ with reviews for the book on the front flap; $2.00 price present. A truly sparkling jacket. Clamshell slipcase in full blue morocco with gilt titles; Fine condition. We do not know how this later jacket came to be matched up with a first issue of the book. Digital images available upon request. Very Good / Very Good+. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
