John Wisden
This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate. Two Ukrainian type specimen of the 1920s. 1. Derzhavniy trest predpriemstv poligrafichnoy prommichlennosti Kiev-Druk. Zrazki shrivtiv 6oi drukarni [i.e. The State Trust of the Printing Enterprises. Type Specimen of the 6th Printer]. Kiev: KIev-Druk, [1920s]. [220 pp.] 26,5x18 cm. One of 150 copies. Original brown cloth. Lettering on the spine is faded, otherwise in a very good condition. In Ukrainian. 2. Knizhkova-zhurnalna fabrika. Zrazki shrivtiv [i.e. The Factory of Books and Magazines. Type Specimen]. Kiev, [1920s]. 72 pp. 20x13,5 cm. One of 100 copies. Original brown cloth. Very good. In Ukrainian. The editions are extremely rare like all Ukrainian pre-war type specimen. It's interesting to analyse them because flagman style of book design in USSR at the time was book constructivism, the principles of which, developed by Alexei Gan, suggested that the fonts as well as any other typographic material should be regarded as the primary means of designing a book. Kiev-Druk was one of the main typographies in Kiev in the 1920s-1930s, producing all kind of printed materials, including children's books and posters. The catalog of Kiev-Druk are design using the principles of constructivism as well, but because a lot of the typography's design elements resemble 'art-nouveau', the end product is very curious. Some half-titles have been designed in the strict geometrical manner, while the variety of vignettes and the headpieces show the lean towards pre-revolutionary stylistics. However the vignettes of the machinery, steamers and coal-wagons are also present, as well as coat of a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Initially an art advisor at Christie's, Laking became internationally recognized as a leading expert on arms and armour. As a very young man, and in 1900, hewas appointed honourary inspector of the armouries at the Wallace Collection, then recently bequeathed to the nation. In 1902 Edward VII created the post of keeper of the king's armoury at Windsor especially for him. The Wallace collection is one of the great arms and armour collections in the world. This set of books was not finished in the authors life time and was finished by his literary executor. Still one of the greatest books in the field. There was a supplementary volume produced in 1924 by F.H. Cripps-Day which … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Condition of box is Near Fine. The only flaw is that one corner is barely split. See Scan of bottom of box -- bottom right hand corner will show you the flaw which is quite minor. The illustration on the top of the box is perfect -- bright and vibrant. Condition of book is Very Good+. Minor wear to cover, as shown in scans. Paper covering of spine is intact and in excellent condition with just one or two tiny flaws. Usually the spine of this book is its downfall, because of the fragile paper covering. This one is the best I've ever seen. Endpapers show some offsetting. Tiny name and date of 1919 at bottom of front free endpaper, otherwise no handwriting in book, no foxing, no torn pages. Very clean. Beautiful little book in a beautiful box. Ruth Plumly Thompson: The Perhappsy Chaps. Illustrated in color by Arthur Henderson. Ruth Plumly Thompson became theauthor of the Oz books after the death of L. Frank Baum. Publisher, Volland, copyright 1918. 1st and only Edition, Hardbound. In original Volland box, which is incredibly rare. See above for condition description. I have been selling Oziana for ten years now, and I have never been able to find this elusive title in its original box. It is an extremely attractive little title with its whimsical illustrations. Publishers red cloth, decorative black to covers, text to spine, minor shelf wear with come minor wear to edges and corners, spine slightly sunned. Fully illustrated with numerous text cuts and full-page plates. "Among the strange ramblings are criticisms of Oxfords Clarendon Press for printing books misrepresenting divine history, but the focus of the volume is quite exclusively linguistic and artistic. The author reveals all sorts of secrets encoded in various words and even in the movements of the mouth required to pronounce the words. He also elicits odd historical testimony from obscure artwork. Masons, Rosicrucians, and 'Ashmoleans' are all attacked as well." [- Good Reads].

First edition, second issue with inserted publisher's catalogue dated "1124." 1250 copies printed, this copy being among those comprising the first of several reissues of 650 to 750 sets of first edition sheets. Lindsay's masterpiece. "Lindsay's A VOYAGE TO ARCTURUS is one of the most extraordinary works of literature, let alone fantasy, ever written. In form and in some of its symbolic techniques it is highly indebted to the work of George MacDonald: but for sheer inventiveness and intensity of imagination its burns like some literary supernova." - Colin Greenland, Scottish Fantasy Literature, p. 153. "A classic allegorical romance in which the landscapes and inhabitants of the planet Tormance provide an externalization of the moral and metaphysical questions that preoccupied the author. Its incarnate theological system influenced Lewis's OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET (1938), and it also bears some similarity to George Macdonald's LILITH (1895), although it is very much a work sui generis." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 2-72. "Some of the imagery is borrowed from Norse mythology (Surtur and Muspel) but the metaphysics that is gradually elaborated is basically a transformed evolutionary theory that applies a harsh metaphorical Darwinism to the business of personal intellectual development. A masterpiece, unparalleled in its graphic imagery and in its ambit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Photographs.
1920. xx. <br /><br />This is a collection of 340 gelatin silver prints, in 5 x 7 format, of a safari undertaken by an American, probably in the 1920s. The photographs are no longer in any particular order, but through them we can trace the Great White Hunter's progress through the Suez Canal, down the Red Sea to Mombasa Kenya, up to Nairobi, then into the Serengeti on a hunting expedition organized by a travel company called Safariland. He was a bespectacled, jowly fellow, who appears in photographs taken at many different locations. There are also dozens of photos of street life and buildings in African cities and villages (as well as several scenes from Genoa, Italy, where the Great White Hunter apparently stopped enroute to Africa.) About 150 photographs document the slaughter that marked the climax of the expedition. The Great White Hunter, other whites, and African bearers pose with zebra, African buffalo, various species of African antelope, cheetah, rhino, game birds, and smaller game. One particularly horrific series of 22 photos documents the killing and dismemberment of an elephant, the Great White Hunter proudly posing at the end with two sets of tusks. Only two of the photos contain any clues as to the man's identity. One is an image of the American sculptor Frank Tolles Chamberlain inscribed to a "Mr. Lincoln." The second is a print measuring 6 x 2 1/2 inches (the only one in the collection not in 5 x 7 format. The back of the print is stamped, "Copyright. New Crystal Finish. The Owl. Lewiston Maine." Owl is a chain of drug stores operating in Maine since the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PERSHING, JOHN J.
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1920. FIRST EDITION. An outstanding presentation copy inscribed by Pershing: To M. le Maréchal Joffre with sincere esteem and affectionate regards, and with gratitude for his friendship and wise counsel. John J. Pershing Washington D.C. Pershing, who led the American forces in World War I, presented this book to his counterpart in the French military. Joseph Joffre was commander-in-chief of the French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is most famous for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive Battle of the Marne in September 1914. In late 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France and moved to an advisory role. In April 1917 Joffre led the French mission to the United States to secure America s entry into the war. He recommended that the Americans lead their own force in the conflict, as Pershing insisted, rather than being integrated into the existing commands. On the final day of the mission he met with Pershing, just named commander of the American Expeditionary Force, telling him that Pershing can always count on me for anything in my power. Joffre became head of the Supreme War Council in 1918, coordinating the Allied war effort from Versailles. This is Pershing s Final Report to Secretary of War Newton Baker, presenting his summary account of the events of the Great War. The work is lavishly illustrated with graphics and maps describing military action and maneuvers, organizational structures, and orders of battle. This classic w … [Click Below for Full Description]
