It can hardly be disputed that the theories put forth in this book are among the most important in the history of modern science. (MOON, William.)
London: The Moon Society, a branch of the National Institute for the Blind,, [c.1920s]. Oblong octavo. 12 leaves of embossed heavy brown paper, in original brown printed wrappers, printed label to front cover. Wrappers a little torn and creased. A very good copy. An appealing example of a book employing William Moon's system of type, in which the letters of the alphabet are reduced to their simplest unique elements and then embossed on paper for touch-reading. Moon had contracted smallpox at the age of 4 and lost the sight in one eye, retaining some vestigial vision in the other. In 1840, aged 22, despite several operations, he became totally blind and had to abandon his intention of taking Holy Orders. Moon had experimented with various of the then current embossed lettering systems, but had found them to be "too complicated for the vast majority of blind persons, especially the aged, and accordingly constructed a system of his own in 1845, using a simplified system of roman lettering." (ODNB). The major problem for Moon's system was the sheer clumsiness of the publications, his edition of the Bible ran to 60 bulky folio volumes. Louis Braille had perfected his system for the French language in 1829, and in 1870 the publication of the first Braille work in English marked what seemed to be the beginning of the end for Moon script, although publications continued. However, there was a considerable rise of interest in the system in the 1990s, as technological solutions were found for the problems of unwieldiness and it is now seen as an excellent alternative for those who … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] LE PRADE, Ruth (editor); SINCLAIR, Upton (introduction)
Upton Sinclair, Pasadena, 1920. Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner, Max Eastman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Carl Sandburg, Siegfried Sassoon, Horace Traubel, and Israel Zangwill, many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword, along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw (who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs"). An interesting pair of copies inscribed to Gardner (1884-1968), acclaimed stage actress and the first actress to form her own production company. Moved by his circumstances and deeply influenced by his speeches, she visited him in prison in 1920, bringing him an autographed photo and beginning a correspondence that would last through the mid-1920's. In a December 21, 1920 letter, she writes: "Let me tell you that I was surprised to find my emotional self somewhat unaffected while I listened to you talk. I know the reason now. It is the same with you as it was with Epicetus, prison walls cannot confine the spirit -- the mind is ever free. So, in a way, I did not feel your plight as keenly as I would that of another who had little vision, little intelligence, little understanding about his body being so small a part of the real him that his confinement was of the physical order only." While the "special edition" of 500, with signed bookplate by Debs, appears with some frequency, inscribed copies of Debs and the Poets are genuinely uncommon. Two octavo volumes (18.75cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sanger, Margaret; Preface by Havelock Ellis
New York: Brentano's, 1920. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original red cloth, frontispiece. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "New York Jan 28 1921 To Mrs Gartz With admiration and appreciation Margaret Sanger." Very good in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. Preface by Havelock Ellis. Margaret Sanger was an American sex educator and nurse who became one of the leading birth control activists of her time, having at one point, even served jail time for importing birth control pills, then illegal, into the United States. Woman and the New Race is her treatise on how the control of population size would not only free women from the bondage of forced motherhood, but would elevate all of society. The original fight for birth control was closely tied to the labor movement as well as the Eugenics movement, and her book provides fascinating insight to a mostly-forgotten turbulent battle recently fought in American history. [Click Below for Full Description]

This seven volume library set collects the works of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte, with introductions and insights by Clement K. Shorter, Mrs Humphry Ward, and Mrs Gaskell. The Bronte Sisters are widely recognised as some of Britain's most influential writers, the extent of which is difficult to track, and their collective works have been acclaimed as masterpieces of literature since their publications, with the sisters particularly becoming champions for female authors who often published under male pseudonyms at the time. RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] LE PRADE, Ruth (editor);
Upton Sinclair, 1920. Two octavo volumes (18.75cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [ii] … [Click Below for Full Description]

One photograph with the stamp of photographer JR Schmidt, with his Cincinnati, OH address. A second photograph with a holograph annotation reading "New Orleans LA / Feb - 1927." Freud begins. "The evaluation of the motives which constrained you in not to attend our congress in the Hague are, of course, entirely your business. I can only say that we badly missed you all, and that, because of your absence, the Swiss group, represented almost entirely by Dr. Pfister, was very obliging towards the Dutch and English groups."The 6th International Psychoanalytical Congress took place inThe Hague in September of 1920. It was there that Freud gave his paper "Supplements to the Theory of Dreams," and seemingly lobbied for the newly-formed International Journal of Psycho-Analysis to become the standard in the field, and had been relying on Oberholzer's support. The letter then goes on to discuss how German membership will be handled moving forward, and how experienced psychoanalysts must protect themselves and their reputations against"unscrupulous physicians who want to analyze without having learned."Oberholzer was an early prop … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schmidt, JR (photographer
N.p. Archive to twelve vintage photographs of remote controlled car demonstrations, circa 1920s. One photograph with the stamp of photographer JR Schmidt, with his Cincinnati, OH address. A second photograph with a holograph annotation reading "New Orleans LA / Feb - 1927." Also known as phantom automobiles, the cars were controlled via radio signals from a second vehicle following the driverless car, with the first recorded instance being made by engineer and inventor Francis P. Houdina down Fifth Avenue in New York in 1925. Demonstrations were held throughout the 1920s and 1930s, with at least four different locations evidenced by the photographs in the collection, as well as car from four different auto manufacturers - Ford, Chevrolet, Essex, and Hudson - attesting to the popularity of the idea of autonomous vehicles, something that both car and tech companies are still trying to realize today. 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm). Very Good only, with expected curling, fading, and wear.
