Tulsa, Oklahoma / Kansas, 1920. Oblong quarto measuring 10 "x 7". Black flexible plastic covers with gilt decorations. Contains 195 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 0.25" x 0.25" and 6" x 4" with captions. Fine with fine photographs A young woman's photo album from the 1920s with pictures of her family, place of work, hobbies, and travels with friends in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The album begins with the woman working a SeidenBach's Department store which was a women's specialty store in the 1920s through 1960s. Her coworkers are pictured with her with everyone's signature underneath. There are a couple pictures of people outside the stores exterior as well. Some of the photographs include the woman's family members living on a farm and having dinner parties but much of the album is of the woman traveling around with friends, affectionately labeled "The Gang." The group is pictured with their automobiles driving around to other places around Oklahoma and Kansas such as cities, parks, and lakes. There are portraits of each friend, sometimes cut into shapes or pleasantly posed in a scene with decorative clothing. Some of the cutouts are very small showing just the person's face and others are cut into diamonds and circles showing a full shot of the person. They are often grouped into couples, one of which shows two women close to each other with, "The Promise," captioned beneath them and another showing one of the women bending down on one knee and holding the other woman's hand. These photos possibly hint at a romantic relationship or a dee … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bonfils Robert, Houville Gérard d'
SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1920. Condition: Like New. A PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL SOURCE. ONE COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Magnificent copy of this shirt from the collection "Modes et Manners of Today", the publication of the best of the fashion of the beginning of the XXth century, by the artists having made it, at the height of their art. The project is led by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. To accompany the artistic and clothing Révolution of the Roaring Twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations by Georges Lepape. In front of the reception given to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose an identical shirt, with different authors and artists. In 1920, it was Robert Bonfils and Gérard d'Houville who supplied Pierre Corrard with the elements to make the annual shirt. This shirt looks like all the others in the series: under a strong cardboard box, the first flat of which is stamped with only titles and years, with, in its center, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper as that illustrating the counterguard, and whose motif was drawn by the artist making the interior boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page with the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, the illustrated plates. Particular care is taken in the production of these plates, from the engraving to the passage of the stencils. The provenance of our copy is exceptional: it co … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONRAD, Joseph
Methuen, 1920. Tenth edition. Original red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "Catherine Willard from her friend Joseph Conrad 1st Jan 1921". A very good copy indeed with minor wear to the spine ends and some cracking to the front hinge. Catherine Willard (1898-1954) was a noted screen actress and leading lady. She met Conrad in about 1920 through her mother, Grace, who at the time was an interior designer and helping the Conrads furnish their new home, Oswalds, in Bishopsbourne, Kent. She was establishing herself as an actress and was about the same age as the Conrad's son, Borys. The latter suspected his parents of attempting to line her up as a future daughter in law. Conrad was writing his dramatic adaptation of The Secret Agent at the time and had Willard in mind for the heroine. He sent the finished manuscript of the play to her shortly before his death in 1924, and it is probable that he gave her this copy to familiarise herself with the novel, in the hope she would take the part, whilst he finished the play. The Secret Agent has long been regarded as one of Conrad's finest and most enduring novels and was a key influence on both Graham Greene and Eric Ambler. It is notably rare in a presentation state, even as a reprint. "The Secret Agent depicts the atmosphere of Edwardian London in a psychological thriller of the anarchist underworld. Conrad's wit and chivalrous magnanimity are at their airiest in this novel." (Connolly) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Mexican Manuscript Cookbook]: Madrid, Lucila
[Puebla, Mexico, 1920. [56]pp. In Spanish. Printed wrappers notebook. Minor wear. Some gatherings sprung. Good condition. A wonderful collection of Mexican food recipes compiled by Lucila Madrid, a fledgling cook in Puebla, Mexico. Madrid uses a school notebook titled "La Tarjeta" and signs her name on the front cover. In the notebook, Madrid records ingredients and "preparacion" instructions for a plethora of Mexican dishes, starting with "Huevos a la Mexicana," "Ninos envueltos," and "Consome Renbi," and encompassing cabbage and cucumber salad, fruit salad, marmalades, desserts ("Gelatina de Leche," "Atole de fresas," and "Molletes de Santa Clara"), dishes now familiar to American palates ("Tamales de mole" and "Salsa general"), and more. Madrid even includes instructions for making a few different types of wine: "Vino de ciruela" (plum wine), "Vino de Piña" (pineapple wine), "Vino de Durazno" (peach wine), and "Vino de Capulin" (cocoon wine). In the last two entries in the volume, Madrid records the recipes for a cocktail (made of habanero, grenadine, cinzano, and lemon juice) and an herbal tea called "Te compuesto." Near the end, in addition to the recipes, Madrid has devoted four-and-a-half pages to writing out a list of "Principales terminos de cocina" in dictionary style. This tends to indicate that she may have been a culinary student, or at the very least a young cook learning her way around the kitchen. An interesting and informative collection of early-20th-century recipes from central Mexico.

FREEMAN, R. Austin
Arthur Pearson, London, 1920. First English edition (previously published in the U.S. as *The Uttermost Farthing*). Cheap paper browned, small spot on the front board, a very good or better copy. This copy Inscribed by Freeman: "P.M. Stone from R. Austin Freeman with cordial good wishes. 3rd April 1939." One of the author's scarcest titles, presumably so because of the execrable leftover wartime paper used in its manufacture. Very seldom found, and never signed or inscribed. Hyannis, Massachusetts, 1920. Oblong octavo. Measuring 7¾" x 5 ¾". Ribbon-tied leather over paper boards with "Snapshots" stamped in silver on the front board. A collection of 146 sepia toned photographs measuring between 1¾" x 2½" and 3¼" x 4", with very few captions. The album is very good with rubbing and some creasing, the photographs are near fine. A photo album of 1920s snapshot photographs from New England, including Hyannis, Massachusetts. The album depicts the activities, mostly of young women in their late teens to early 20s, in Hyannis Massachusetts in the 1920s. These include swimming, camping (with what looks like a group such as the Girl Scouts or The Camp Fire Girls), and multiple events that apparently required parading around in costumes including in Native American dress. Additionally amateur performances are captured here with girls in costume acting in the woods. There are also a few photographs of the women with men in military uniforms, one shows a young man in camp playing a bugle. Towards the end of the album some of the women are posing with a man dressed in a Hyannis baseball uniform. An interesting assemblage depicting the activities of a group of young New England women in the Twenties. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Sixteen full color plates with captioned tissue guards, twenty-one drawings in black and white. A Near Fine copy. The fairy tales in this book include: The Story of Tuan mac Cairill The Boyhood of Fionn The Birth of Bran Oisin's Mother The Wooing of Becfola The Little Brawl at Allen The Carl of the Drab Coat The Enchanted Cave of Cesh Corran Becuma of the White Skin Morgan's Frenzy "Rackham's two great books of the twenties were James Stephens' Irish Fairy Tales of 1920 and Shakespeare's Tempest of 1926... Beyond the softness of style and inventiveness, the most striking thing about the colour plates for Irish Fairy Tales is the felicitous and appropriate use of Celtic borders" (Gettings 143). "Rackham's books for the English market in the early post-war years included Flora Annie Steel's English Fairy Tales Retold (1918)... and his friend James Stephen's collection of Irish Fairy Tales... In the latter book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ten mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards. An excellent copy. "Au Royaume de la Perle was first published in Paris (by Payot) in 1919 without benefit of the Dulac illustrations which the author Mr. Rosenthal so eagerly sought. But when, in 1920, Dulac found time to produce 10 pictures, Mr. Rosenthal not only purchased the water colours, but had another publisher, Piazza of Paris, publish a 1,500-copy new edition of his Perle book with the Dulac illustrations. Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the Pearl illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House...The English edition, although praised by The Times Literary critic as Dulac 'at his best' was not a commercial success. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1920. Very good condition, cover has a little wear to the edges, but the gold is still bright. End papers darkened on outer sides, the illustration on the last endpaper consequently a little darkened, but otherwise no sign of foxing and pages are clean and bright. Publisher's full cream cloth, gilt lettering on spine, elaborate gilt decoration on cover, and top edge of pages also gilded. Printed on hand made paper, with uneven page lengths. "This edition is limited to 1,000 copies and cannot be reprinted, as the stones from which the offset plates were printed were in Belgium at the time of the German invasion, and were destroyed." Illustrated with twelve tissue-protected, full-page plates and thirteen decorated opening initials by Alastair. This is the only edition with the Alastair plates. "Alastair" was the pseudonym of Baron Hans-Henning von Voigt (1887-1969), a German-born artist, dancer and mime, derived his provocative style of illustration directly from Aubrey Beardsley. His pictures are known for their combination of "decorative elegance with a fascination with the perverse, sinister and satanic" (Peppin & Micklethwait). This special edition of Wilde's The Sphinx, designed entirely by Alastair, contains ten fine tissue-guarded full-page black-and-white, two additional illustrations tipped front and rear, and numerous large ornamental initial letters--all heightened in teal by hand.
