Marca Stella - Marca Aquila (Marche depositate)
Milan, c. 1920. Coloured lithograph. 485 x 330mm. Laid on canvas. ''The entertaining game of the moon.'' The board depicts a crescent moon with the numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11. The number 7 is placed on a tree-trunk. The game is played with two dice. Whoever rolls one of the numbers on the moon has to deposit a coin, but if the number is already occupied the player passes the dice to the next. If a player rolls 7 he puts the coin onto the tree-trunk, leaving in there until the end of the game. Whoever throws two wins the coins on the moon, and rolling twelve wins all the coins on the board.

Tashkent: Sakomta, Tashobllit, [1920s]. 52x71 cm. Chromolithography. In Russian and Uzbeki. Good, poster is backed, restoration of the edges. One of 1000 copies. Design by unknown artist. The poster shows the approaching of the new Soviet reality in the Central Asian republics. The map on the background covers the territory of modern Uzbekistan, with the fragments of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan as well. The poster is dedicated to Amu Darya, one of the two major rivers supplying Central Asia. The famous Lenin's 'bow between the city and the countryside' is shown in the local variant. The peasant is holding astrakhan fur and waving at the city in the left corner of the poster with the message 'All of the primary products to the factories!' He also leads the caravan of goods, that has the poster 'to the fair!' in front of them. The female worker waving back to the peasant from the city holds the flag that says 'More goods to the faraway territories'. The picture concludes with the sun rising over Kyzylkum dessert, the steamer going down the river and the thickets of cotton alongside Amu-Darya.

Type Specimen of the 6th Printer]. Kiev: KIev-Druk, [1920s]. [220 pp.] 26,5x18 cm. One of 150 copies. Original brown cloth. Lettering on the spine is faded, otherwise in a very good condition. In Ukrainian. 2. Knizhkova-zhurnalna fabrika. Zrazki shrivtiv [i.e. The Factory of Books and Magazines. Type Specimen]. Kiev, [1920s]. 72 pp. 20x13,5 cm. One of 100 copies. Original brown cloth. Very good. In Ukrainian. The editions are extremely rare like all Ukrainian pre-war type specimen. It's interesting to analyse them because flagman style of book design in USSR at the time was book constructivism, the principles of which, developed by Alexei Gan, suggested that the fonts as well as any other typographic material should be regarded as the primary means of designing a book. Kiev-Druk was one of the main typographies in Kiev in the 1920s-1930s, producing all kind of printed materials, including children's books and posters. The catalog of Kiev-Druk are design using the principles of constructivism as well, but because a lot of the typography's design elements resemble 'art-nouveau', the end product is very curious. Some half-titles have been designed in the strict geometrical manner, while the variety of vignettes and the headpieces show the lean towards pre-revolutionary stylistics. However the vignettes of the machinery, steamers and coal-wagons are also present, as well as coat of a … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Tbilisi]: Poligraficheskiy trest VSNHG, [1920s]. 96?65 cm. Chromolithography. Carefully restored. In a very good condition. Design by unknown artist. Text in Georgian. A remarkable example of the Georgian poster design. Extremely rare like most of Georgian posters of the 1920s. The graphic visualisation of the government loans in USSR. During the New Economic Policy the bonds were issued several times in the 1920s with the highest rate at 12%. On the poster the worker, hammering a sickle, instead of sparkles producing the bonds that go to schools (building in the centre), cities and countryside. On the opposite side of the poster, behind the border post, is the image of the West, the explanation reads 'The loans of the bourgeois countries are spent on the militarisation and suppression of the factory workers'. The conclusion at the bottom of the poster reads: 'We are fighting the attempts of the financial blockade'. In fact the blockade was already in place as the Soviet State was not allowed to take credits from the world banks. The poster was most likely created between 1924 and 1927 when such bonds were issued.

Dostojewski, F(jodor). M(ichailowitsch)
Mchn, R. Piper & Co, 1920. 19,5 × 12,3 cm (7 5/8 × 4 7/8 in). XVIII, 1182 SS. [Piegan Blackfeet] [Advocacy] [Photography] Schuster, Christian F.
Montana, 1920. Sixty-three postcards measuring 4 x 6 inches, mixed media images some with graphite and watercolor over photographic exposures. Typewritten captions to versos. Christian F. Schuster was a lumber man, boy scout and amateur archaeologist from Holyoke, Massachusetts who spent a series of seventeen summers living with the Piegan Blackfeet beginning in 1923. He was given the name Aainiakoi Plitaa, or, Morning Eagle by the Piegan chief Curly Bear in an adoption ceremony. The collection here documents his adoption by the Piegan tribe. Composed of sixty-three photographs, is one of the most striking visual records we have encountered of American Indian life from this period, due to the sympathetic eye of the photographer and visually arresting hybrid technique of watercolor, pencil and photographic exposure at work in the images. We cannot confirm the identity of the artist further, but it is possible that it was Lone Wolf, or Hart Merriam Schultz, the son of James Willard Schultz, who was a prolific artist and illustrator during this period. Lone Wolf would later operate a guest house called the Lone Wolf Guest Ranch and Club, and we have found another account of a white adoptee purchasing some artwork from Lone Wolf in the early 1930s. The hybrid technique at work here was also used by De Lancey Gill, the prominent BAE photographer, taught to him by William Henry Holmes. Schuster himself took at least some of the photographs, as noted in the captions. The images show life among the Blackfeet several decades after the last buffalo hunts had failed in 188 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Western Americana] [National Parks] [Blackfeet] Hileman, T.J.; Haynes, Frank J.; Jacobs, Frank, et al.
Various Places, 1920. Oblong folio, cloth over cardstock, 15 x 11 inches. Photographs and realphoto postcards, most measuring around 5 x 3 1/2 inches, mounted to pages. The system of national parks was created at first in a somewhat piecemeal fashion, with the Department of the Interior holding responsibility for establishing each park individually. Chief White Calf of the Blackfeet famously negotiated the sale of the bulk of the lands that would form Glacier National Park in 1895, with the agreement being that the US Government would allow for Blackfoot hunting (Chief White Calf's son, Chief Two Guns White Calf, would later travel to Washington in protest of the government's subsequent actions). The establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 coincided roughly with the dawn of American motor tourism. This album dates from that early period of National Park recreation, and bears evidence as to the recreation that happened around the early part of the century. The album shows scenery in three national parks by noted photographers, including some iconic photographs of Yellowstone by Frank J. Haynes first taken in the and several scarce images of Blackfoot attributed to the noted photographer T.J. Hileman, who was the official photographer of Glacier National Park during this period. The album begins with twenty-eight photographs by Haynes, who printed copies of his classic Yellowstone photographs, first taken in the 1890s, from his St. Paul, Minnesota studio. The next group shows twenty realphoto postcards of Mt. Rainier National Wilderness Area, taken by Frank Jacobs … [Click Below for Full Description]

STALIN, Joseph.) BUKHARIN, Nikolai Ivanovich.
Moscow: State Publishing House, 1920. Octavo (214 x 142 mm). Contemporary purple cloth, marble-patterned endpapers, spine lettered in gilt, red ribbon page marker. Stalin library inkstamp to the title, with a presentation inscription in Russian (slightly trimmed) to the half title, and scattered pencil underlining and marginal markings. Contents lightly toned; an excellent copy. 7 pages of charts and figures at the end of the text. First edition, an astounding association copy, presented by Nikolai Bukharin to Joseph Stalin, inscribed by Bukharin on the half-title in Russian (here translated): "Dear Koba [a nickname] Stalin, in memory of my 'heresies'. N. Bukharin". The book has various pencilled marginal annotations, in a style consistent with Stalin's usual method of annotation, mostly underlining, with marginal exclamation marks and emphasizing lines. As a relic of the early Bolshevik and Stalinist era, the book can have few equals in the significance of its association. Bukharin (1888-1938) was intimately tied up with the Revolution and the Soviet project. As a young man he was exiled and worked with Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin in publishing Marxist writings and promoting revolutionary ideas. Returning to Russia in 1917, Bukharin soon became a senior figure in the Bolshevik Party, and editor of Pravda. By 1924 Bukharin was a close ally of Stalin, and he used his considerable skills in Marxist theoretics to justify and elaborate Stalin's Socialism in One Country policy. In 1926 he became General Secretary of the Comintern. A year later he joined with Stalin to oust Trotsky … [Click Below for Full Description]

The boards are very dark, the gilt is bright to the front but darkened to the spine, the page block i also very dark. A couple of marks to the boards. The hinges are OK, strong enough, but the internal book has again signs of darkness, there are a few annotations in the book and one oddity pages 261-284 are creased down the middle. This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

1920. Condition of box is Near Fine. The only flaw is that one corner is barely split. See Scan of bottom of box -- bottom right hand corner will show you the flaw which is quite minor. The illustration on the top of the box is perfect -- bright and vibrant. Condition of book is Very Good+. Minor wear to cover, as shown in scans. Paper covering of spine is intact and in excellent condition with just one or two tiny flaws. Usually the spine of this book is its downfall, because of the fragile paper covering. This one is the best I've ever seen. Endpapers show some offsetting. Tiny name and date of 1919 at bottom of front free endpaper, otherwise no handwriting in book, no foxing, no torn pages. Very clean. Beautiful little book in a beautiful box. Ruth Plumly Thompson: The Perhappsy Chaps. Illustrated in color by Arthur Henderson. Ruth Plumly Thompson became theauthor of the Oz books after the death of L. Frank Baum. Publisher, Volland, copyright 1918. 1st and only Edition, Hardbound. In original Volland box, which is incredibly rare. See above for condition description. I have been selling Oziana for ten years now, and I have never been able to find this elusive title in its original box. It is an extremely attractive little title with its whimsical illustrations. For the Volland collector or the Oz collector, this is a find as rare as hen's teeth. I have listed some lovely and rare Oziana besides this; please see my other auctions and keep checking back to see what else I am making available. I have a perfect feedback record and will be happy to answer questions … [Click Below for Full Description]
