MILLARD Thomas Franklin Fairfax
1920. Vol. XI, XII, XIII. 3 vols. Each volume with 13 numbers of ca. 50pp, illustrated with adverts throughout. Folio. Bound in late 20th century black library cloth, light browning to first volume, title vol. XI, no. 2 loose, but overall a close to fine set. Blind-stamp of the ?Miami University Library, Oxford Ohio?, 'withdrawn' stamp in each volume. 660; 676, [xii]; 726, [xii] pp. Shanghai, Millard Publishing Company, 1919- Millard's Review was a weekly newspaper founded by Thomas Franklin Fairfax Millard (1868-1942) in 1917. The Review differed from other newspapers by being openly anti-imperialist (this included Japan), staunchly liberal, and openly supportive of the socialist policies of Sun Yat-sen as propagated through the KMT. The newspaper provided a weekly survey of a wide range of political, social, economical and commercial issues in China. Apart for the adverts there are very few illustrations in the paper except for one or two photographic portraits of notables in the military and politics under the heading 'Who's who in China'. From its first issue on June 9th, 1917 it was also the official organ of the U.S. Court for China under Judge C. S. Lobingier. In June 1921 the co-founder J. B. Powell renamed it The Weekly Review of the Far East: Devoted to the Economic, Political and Social Development of China and Its Intercourse with other Nations and in the following year Powell acquired Millard's share of the Review. The Review provides a fascinating glimpse into life and politics in Shanghai during the 1920s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jennings, H. H.
for City of Bradford, Technical College, Dept. of Textile, 1920. Folio (approx. 13¼" x 9½"), pp. [74]; manuscript text in a cursive hand on ruled paper, including 18 leaves of hand-drawn color diagrams, several diagrams showing the set-up of a loom, 54 tipped-in fabric samples on card stock, contained in a two-ring binder with ownership signature and title on front pastedown, Bradford Technical College Stamps on rear pastedown, and with a professor's signature approving the manuscript; moderately worn, some chipping and soiling to the fore-edges, some soiling to end leaves. A cotton-, silk-, and wool-weaving manuscript made by a student, with numerous tipped-in samples, hand-drawn and lettered colored diagrams throughout. A remarkable artifact showing the training a weaver received at the Bradford Technical College. These course books were judged on completeness and the aspiring weaver's skill in presenting the details about the instruction, as well as their abilities to illustrate and accurately portray the production of (in this case) rather stunning cotton, silk, and woolen fabrics. The manuscript details the instructions for preparing the loom, and weaving diagrams for producing embossed fabrics, silk neckwear and men's ties, gauze and lace weaving, silk laces, tapestry weaving, muslins, madras muslins, machine- and hand-woven carpets - all of them with tipped-in fabric samples showing the resulting product. The beautifully executed color diagrams and illustrations show an aspiring weaver's professional abilities. The lettering demonstrates a decidedly pre-War Arts & Cr … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

Other poets included in the collection, such as Andrei Bely, Alexander Blok and Anna Akhmatova initially supported the Bolshevik Revolution and chose to remain in Russia, later growing disillusioned with the regime and in the case of Akhmatova and Bely being barred from publication. W D Sayle
1920. Condition: Very Good with no dust jacket / Signed. W. D. Sayle. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1920. First Edition; First Printing. Flexible cloth. Very good first edition in brown cloth covers. Inscribed by author: 'Dear Dr. Wood I hope this little narration will interest you W. D. Sayle Nov. 18 1920'. The cover is lightly worn around the edges. Binding is tight; this is one of the cleanest copies of this scarce Colorado Plateau title we've seen. More often than not, the flexible boards are curled and very chipped. The text and pictures are in very good shape. Follows the author's journey from Adamana, NM, throughout the southwest to Rainbow Arch (now Bridge). A fun journal of the exploration of a remote area of the American southwest, where few whites had been before. A highpoint for collectors of Colorado Plateau material which rarely appears on the market. Rydal Press printed 70 copies in facsimile in 1999. No record of how many copies of the original were printed.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 62 pp; Signed by Author. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

LEPAPE, Georges 1887-1971
Paris: Aux Editions Lucien Vogel, 1920. First Edition. Rare. Dictionary Catalogue of the Dance Collection of the New York Public Library Vol. 6, p. 3622. Not in Beaumont, Derra de Moroda, Niles & Leslie, or Magriel.Georges Lepape was a noted French poster artist, illustrator, and fashion designer. Lepape's work incorporates orientalist motifs with fluid lines, bold coloration, and graphic stylizations that are evocative of the Art Nouveau movement, which includes Alphonse Mucha, Erté, Gustav Klimt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec... The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris held the first major exhibition of his work in 1920, and six years later he would be invited by publisher Condé Nast to work in New York. While there, he produced iconic cover art for Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines. In 2016 he broke an auction record in New York with his work Le Miroir, a watercolor and ink illustration on paper. The artist remained an influential figure in the fashion and art worlds until his death February 15, 1971, in Bonneval, France at the age of 83." artnet.com/artists/georges-lepape/ A highly attractive portfolio of designs in the Art-Deco style, rarely found complete.. Duvernois, Henri
Likely 1920s (it was found inserted into a copy of Morte la Bête -1926 - that Duvernois had given Edmond Roze, a theatrical director and producer and his wife Jeanne Silvain, an actress, in 1928). The sheets measure roughly 8.5 x 5.5 inches, are held together with a brass folding tack, labeled 'Acte III' on first page, and lightly written in pencil 'Mss of Henri Duvernois' - probably by Jeanne Silvain, who married an American after Roze's death at Auschwitz and came to live near Pittsburgh. Duvernois (1875-1937) is best known these days as a screenwriter but also published several plays in multiple acts through the 1920s and it is entirely conceivable that he gave a sample of a play to Roze to consider producing. We're not sure if this is part of a published work. Very Good.

Vachel Lindsay
New York: Macmillan, 1920. Condition: Near Fine Robinson) who, on a subsequent page gifted, inscribed and signed it, in green ink, to a Myrtle Danforth. Additionally (presumably in Robinson's green ink, as well), several paragraphs are neatly bracketed throughout, the first mentioning that E.S.Frazee was grandfather to both Vachel Lindsay and her husband. (Two copies in custom double-tray box, one near fine in very good dustjacket (a bit of edgewear), the other copy, bearing the incredible inscription, lacking rear board and much of the cloth once covering the book's spine. The poor copy is the one -- essentially an author-designated "limited edition", which bears Vachel Lindsay's lengthy, and deeply personal, two-page (i.e., to nobody in particular) inscription on the front pastedown and front free endpapers, which reads, in part: "Of the last 100 copies of the first edition, this is number 54", going on for ten more handwritten lines to offer deep comment about life, literature, and his then-recent relocation to Spokane, Washington. Between 1924 and 1928 Lindsay stayed in Spokane essentially as a "Poet-in-Residence" living in the Davenport Hotel. This copy probably owned by Lucy M.C. Robinson, (wife of Lindsay's cousin James H. FABULOUS INSCRIPTION!. Once one of the most popular poets in America, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was, arguably, America's first "Performance Poet", whose flamboyantly theatrical readings have been described as being in "a ragtime manner", a style which Lindsay himself referred to as "higher vaudeville recitation". RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] LE PRADE, Ruth (editor); SINCLAIR, Upton (introduction)
Upton Sinclair, Pasadena, 1920. Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner, Max Eastman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Carl Sandburg, Siegfried Sassoon, Horace Traubel, and Israel Zangwill, many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword, along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw (who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs"). A key association copy inscribed to Palmer, who served as Attorney General under Woodrow Wilson from 1919-1921. As a reaction to domestic unrest, Palmer created the General Intelligence Unit in 1919, recruiting J. Edgar Hoover to lead the new organization. During the First Red Scare (1919-1920), the "Palmer Raids" were launched, which resulted in numerous suspected radicals to be rounded up and deported. During the final weeks of Wilson's time in office, Palmer requested a Presidential pardon for an aging Debs, whose health was deteriorating in prison; Wilson's response was "Never!" Octavo (18.75cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; [ii],99,[11]pp. With a full-page contemporary inscription from Le Prade to U.S. Attorney General A. Michell Palmer on the front endpaper: "To A. Mitchell Palmer - The poets of the world appeal to you for the liberation of Eugene V. Debs. - Sincerely / Ruth Le Prade / Editor of "Debs and the Poets" / "Glad witness to your zeal for God and love of man I bear." - Whittier / December 25, 1920." 1 manuscrit musical autographe signé 1 p. In-folio oblong 1920 Encre noire. San Antonio: Jackson Printing Co., 1920 & 1923., 1920. First edition. First editions. 2 volumes. Pictorial cloth, 498pp., & 496pp., frontis, portraits, advertisement. Both volumes were "published under the direction of George W. Saunders, President of the Old Trail Drivers Association. These original 2 volumes were very crudely printed and bound, making it very difficult to find copies that aren't loose and heavily worn. The first volume was exhausted before the second volume appeared; therefore it was reprinted in 1924 with some revisions and additions in an edition of 500 copies with a "second edition" imprint...In spite of the crudeness of the two volumes, they are perhaps the most important single contribution to the history of cattle driving on the Western trails."--Ramon Adams. In SIX-GUNS...Ramon Adams refers to the original edition as "rare" and the 1924 "second edition" as scarce. "This compilation is the essential starting point for any study of Texas trail driving days."--John Jenkins. "Absolutely the best source there is on the cattle trail"--Walter Prescott Webb. "This vast complication of original accounts by old trail drivers is one of the best cattle books, and the largest collection of first hand narratives of the range cattle industry."--Bill Reese. A rare and important work. The first volume has the errata slip affixed to the front pastedown sheet, else a very good, tight copy. Volume II is also a very good, tight copy. A desirable set, especially in this condition.
