c. 1920. Early 20th Century French Empire Dor'e bronze inkwell featuring prominently a large bronze eagle flanked by two bronze inkwells on clawed feet. Sited on a green marble base atop two bronze winged lions and two rear feet. The entire piece measures 15.25 inches long, 7.25 inches deep, and 8.5 inches tall. In fine condition. A handsome library decoration. Inkwells became popular after the Romans invaded Egypt in the first century B.C.E., where the earliest examples were used in a highly restricted quantity by Egyptian scribes. The practice of using inkwells to write fell out of primary use in the mid 20th century when fountain pens were developed and nibs were first mass-produced by Josiah Mason in Birmingham England in 1828. THE CLASON MAP COMPANY
The Clason Map Company, [1920]., Chicago, Denver. Original color, pictorial, stiff wrappers, two folding maps (each affixed to the front and rear inside covers), 32 pp., illustrated. Rare pocket map and guide to Wyoming, published by Clason Map Company. The front map gives an overview of Wyoming state roads and distances, and on the verso is printed a mileage map of principal roads across the United States. The second map is slightly larger and much more detailed, shows not only roads and towns, but also outline counties and national forests, and delineates major geological features as well as significant oil fields. The text, in addition to providing traveler's information, indexes of significant towns, locations of services, contains an effusive promotional essay about Wyoming that touches on many of its major attractions and praises its growing agricultural and oil industries, with several photographic reproductions. We locate three institutional examples, at the University of Wyoming, the University of Idaho, and the Colorado School of Mines. Light wear and a light corner crease to top edge of front cover panel, two tiny areas at top margin of a few pages of a faint old water stain, a short separation at the head of the rear map, but both maps are generally in fine condition. Contains 74 black and white gelatin silver or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 1.5" and 5" x 3.5" with captions and glassine wrappers between each page. A family photo album from the 1920s mostly centered around the New England region of the United States with some Southern areas mixed in. The photographs feature pictures of the family traveling to locations around the Atlantic coast like Wesleyan in Connecticut and Seawell, North Carolina. There are several pictures of beaches as well as pine plantations, limestone quarries, churches, farms with cattle, and boiling houses for sugar cane. There are also pictures of homes and people riding in horse driven carriages. Most of the photographs are of the young children in the family. Some of the photos have captions of the children's names like "Iol," "Teddy," "Buddy," and "Violet". The pictures of the children usually are posed shots of them in groups or single shots of the children in formal attire. Several shots are of "Jessie" dancing and posing. There are a few photos of the older adults; one of which is captioned "Dink Ripley". Most of the adult photos are more serious but a few catch passing smiles. There is also an article from a newspaper clipping that expresses the writer's concern for Prohibition, "Why they would cut almost harmless beer off with three months' notice and give alcoholic liquor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fascicoli in folio (cm. 31,5). Anno XVII. Milano, 1920. Standard Slide Corp, 1920. Collection of seven (7) lantern slides hand-colored in transparent dyes on glass. In original tape casings. Well preserved, each about near fine. An uncommonly well-preserved and beautiful collection of silent-era movie-house marketing slides, ca. 1920. Intended for projection as movie-goers made their way to seats, and during intermissions, reel changes, film repairs, and the like, the slides are colorfully executed in a striking Deco style. Messages vary from announcements of coming attractions to pleas for quiet children. Slide titles include: "Complete Change of Program Tomorrow," "The Management of This Theatre Will be Glad to Hear from Anyone Who Has a Just Criticism..." etc. While slides promoting upcoming attractions produced by movie studios are relatively common, in-house slides such as these are decidely more ephemeral. A scarce survival and an attractive relic of the silent-film era and early American cinema.

[California]. [Automobiles]
[Los Angeles, 1920. Overall, very good.. 137 maps cards, each 10.5 x 3.75 inches, plus folding map index. Light tanning, occasional light wear. Set numbered 1-221; lacks cards 6, 19, 32-35, 70, 88; cards numbered 135-199, 205-214 not present but not shown in index. A substantial collection of over 135 strip maps that delineate the principal automobile routes in California during the 1910s, published by the Automobile Club of Southern California. The cards are accompanied by a folding map index, which shows the overall chart of the routes in the state, with roads numbered to match the individual cards on which they appear. The routes depicted are particularly plentiful and thorough for the Los Angeles area and the region stretching east to San Bernardino and Redlands and south to Balboa and Laguna, but they provide direction for motorists throughout the state. The versos of many cards list hotels and garages officially approved by the Automobile Club which are noted on the maps themselves. The present group of maps is nearly complete, lacking eight cards for routes numbered on the index. We locate sizable collections of these maps, similar to the one present here, at Claremont, Berkeley, UC San Diego, and the University of Chicago. All are incomplete to some degree. A collection with approximately half the maps indexed is at Yale. A group of this size and near completeness is quite scarce.

The backdrop for this work is stated in the introduction by the author: "The study of nature serves as foundation from the outset. Not to copy nature, as a trained eye sees it, was the intention, something different could be created only when considering the form of the presentation. The objective is to create studies in a beautiful rendition, the extraction of decorative forms while applying complete freedom, recording the essence while omitting all ornateness is the general guideline. Starting with the choice of motifs diligence has to be applied. Useful native plants and animals are plentiful in nature. c1920. This handmade photography guide, called, Kodakery, contains a series of drawings, photographs, and printed photographs, used to illustrate the art of photography. Made from a photo album, it contains 23 pages of written text, 5 pages of drawings, 26 individual photographs, and 16 printed photographs. Kodakery is a term that was derived from the camera name "Kodak", and according to this guide it meant "the taking of pictures, developing and finally printing to show the picture." The guide starts off with a description of the camera itself, its various parts and 6 different types of lenses (miniscus, concave, convex, meniscus achromatic, rapid rectilnear, and anastigmatic lenses), and more specifically how light enters the camera through the different lenses. The guide continues on to provide in-depth explanations of a fixed focus camera and of that of an adjustable focal length, and what that means for the camera's depth of focus, even discussing what F-stops are best for different types of pictures. Next the guide discusses the film itself and its different parts: a strip of celluloid, a gelatin, and a silver bromide, before continuing on to instruct the reader on how to develop the film and how make prints from the negatives. This section is rather in depth, as it goes into the room requirements, the chemicals needed, how to enlarge prints, and different contrast filters that can be used. The guide ends with a series of quick tips for the reader to remember, such as "be sure the temperature of the developer and fixing is below 70 degrees" and "fixed focus cameras … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. One of a series of five photographs known as The Cottingley Fairy pictures -- one of the great photographic hoaxes. Two young girls cousins, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, produced the five pictures (two in 1917 and three more in 1920) using the camera which belonged to Elsie's father and taking them while playing in the garden of Elsie's home in Cottingley. In 1919 Elsie's mother took the first two pictures to a meeting of the Theosophical Society where all assembled were enthralled. They came to the attention of one of leaders, Edward Gardner, at the society's annual conference, who had them "authenticated" by photographer Harold Snelling who declared them "genuine unfaked photographs of single exposure". The images began circulating among the English spiritualist community, which included Arthur Conan Doyle. It was Doyle who urged the girls to take more photographs in 1920 -- this image is from that group. Some years later Gardner published Fairies: The Cottingley Photographs and Their Sequel. He described this image #4 as taken August 1920. Camera: Cameo Quarter. He explains why Elsie does not seem to be looking directly at the fairy: "With fairy lovers the habit of looking at first a little sideways is common". The seriousness of this description underscores the importance of these photographs to spiritualists of the early 20th century, and the absurdity as well. The photographs are sometimes found on cardstock mounts with printed captions underneath. [San Francisco]: [1912-1920]. 74 leaves [46 cm x 39 cm] of handmade paper. The majority of the leaves have three uniform holes at the left. Item #2886 The portfolio contains 75 entries (28 are duplicates), as well as the title page, on handmade paper. All entries are in Dixon's distinctive hand, and include the title, size, date, and sometimes the location and disposition of the work. The cover is titled Paintings by Maynard Dixon, along with his distinctive Thunderbird symbol outlined in a circle. The entries were accompanied by original photographs done by noted San Francisco photographer Gabriel Moulin. Most of the Moulin photographs have been removed but five still remain. These photographs [24 cm x 17 cm] contain either Edith Hamlin's stamp or Gabriel Moulin's (and in many cases some pencil annotations, probably by Hamlin). The photographed paintings are: 'The Trading Post' - 'Corral Dust' - 'Camp in the Mountains' - 'Home Pastures' - 'The Old Cow Town'. Among the numerous entries are murals for Anita Baldwin's Indian Room and Jinks Room for her Arcadia home, The Old Trading Post, Corral Dust, Home Pastures, Pony Boy, Blackfeet Historians, Camp in the Mountains, The Navajos, The Story Tellers, From Range to Range, What an Indian Thinks, Cattle Country, Home of the Half-Breed, among others. A number of works are from his legendary 1917 trip to Montana. Dixon probably intended the portfolio as a document he could show prospective clients and for museum and gallery exhibitions. WATROUS family
Connecticut / New Jersey / New York, 1920. Softcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10" x 7". Stapled grey paper wrappers. Contains 80 black and white gelatin silver, cyanotype, or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 5" x 4" with captions. Some chips with edgewear thus a very good album with near fine lightly sunned photographs. A family photo album from 1906 through to the mid-1920s from various places in Connecticut. The album is a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Chas B. Watrous from Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Bassett with the date, Feb 25, 1908 and "Congratulations" written on the front. The photographs mostly focus on the children of Charles and Annie Watrous. They have three children, Ruth, Miriam, and Herbert but Ruth has the most pictures with little captions under each one such as "Be jabbers," "I'm mad," and "Goo bye!" Ruth is seen in photos from almost every year between 1906 and 1920 in the album while her brother Herbert has a much smaller amount of photos. Miriam is only seen in one picture but this is probably due to the fact that she passed away at the age of three. There are also pictures of the extended family, one of which shows all the women wearing large and extravagant hats and other shows the women in the family all playing croquet. The family moves a couple times to different places in Connecticut such as Thomaston and Plymouth in Litchfield and Niantic in East Lyme. Several pictures are captioned with the locations and dates of when the Watrous family settled into their new homes. The album also includes pictures from Johnson's mountains in … [Click Below for Full Description]
