LEHÁR, Franz 1870-1948
[Vienna]: [ca. 1920]. DOLBIN, Benedikt 1883-1971. 343 x 250 mm. Pen, ink, and black chalk on a light yellow background wash. Signed by Dolbin just below the portrait. "[Lehár] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." Andrew Lamb in Grove Music Online. Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack) was born in Vienna and studied there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." Beginning around 1917, he drew portraits of leading artistic personalities for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Women] [Suffrage] [Theatre] [Marlowe, Julia] Genthe, Arnold
Arnold Genthe, New York, 1920. An uncommon image of the actress, feminist and suffrage advocate Julia Marlowe, who adopted the name - though never legally - Julia Marlowe Sothern after working with the Shakespearean actor E.H. Sothern. Ill health led Marlowe to retire from the stage in 1924 and she was seldom seen in public. This photograph, inscribed later in her life, is an uncommon relic from her reclusive later years. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned. Arnold Genthe, who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio, moved to New York in 1911, where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins, otherwise excellent, with some light normal tanning to mount. Silver gelatin print, 6 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches on larger mount. Signed by Genthe on the mount, inscribed by Marlowe as Marlowe Sothern on the mount as follows: "To Jean: our little comrade on our walks in Beautiful Stockbridge. In remembrance also of 'Sun Yat Sen' and Choo-Chio Chow. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern." [Attributes: First Edition]

Western Americana] [National Parks] [Blackfeet] Hileman, T.J.; Haynes, Frank J.; Jacobs, Frank, et al.
Various Places, 1920. The system of national parks was created at first in a somewhat piecemeal fashion, with the Department of the Interior holding responsibility for establishing each park individually. Chief White Calf of the Blackfeet famously negotiated the sale of the bulk of the lands that would form Glacier National Park in 1895, with the agreement being that the US Government would allow for Blackfoot hunting (Chief White Calf's son, Chief Two Guns White Calf, would later travel to Washington in protest of the government's subsequent actions). The establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 coincided roughly with the dawn of American motor tourism. This album dates from that early period of National Park recreation, and bears evidence as to the recreation that happened around the early part of the century. The album shows scenery in three national parks by noted photographers, including some iconic photographs of Yellowstone by Frank J. Haynes first taken in the and several scarce images of Blackfoot attributed to the noted photographer T.J. Hileman, who was the official photographer of Glacier National Park during this period. The album begins with twenty-eight photographs by Haynes, who printed copies of his classic Yellowstone photographs, first taken in the 1890s, from his St. Paul, Minnesota studio. The next group shows twenty realphoto postcards of Mt. Rainier National Wilderness Area, taken by Frank Jacobs. Some images show the architecture of the lodges, some of which were later designated as national landmarks due to their exemplification of Nationa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Music] [Vernacular Photography]
Various Places, 1920. Blind musicians, family bands, poised soloists, women's social clubs, sibling groups, drinking buddies, and all kinds of instruments (one-man bands, glass harps, bassoons, banjos, violas, drum kits, trumpets, and clarinets, et al.), are featured in this magnificent, wide-ranging document of vernacular American music before the electronic era. The collection spans a period that witnessed the explosion of popular music in the United States. Contributing to this rapid growth was the proliferation of sheet-music; the influence of African American music, including ragtime, gospel, and the blues; the flourishing of musical theater, popular religious music, dance orchestras, and hybrid regional ethnic genres, including folk and bluegrass, as well as revolutionary methods for recording and distribution. During this seismic shift in the way music was composed, played, and listened to, analog recording technologies granted even the most rural areas of the country unprecedented access to America's changing rhythms. Composer John Philip Sousa predicted that the phonograph would lead to the death of music. "The time is coming when no one will be ready to submit himself to the ennobling discipline of learning music [.] Everyone will have their ready made or ready pirated music in their cupboards." But these fears were overstated, at least until the emergence of electronic recording in the mid-1920s. As musicologist Richard Crawford writes, "Behind [professional] band's like Sousa's lay a vast network of amateur groups [.] that were part of many Americans' musical ex … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed in red and black with double spread decorated title pages with tipped-in color frontispieces and illustrated head-pieces. The plates in Volume II are after photos by Sarony, Genthe, Weston, Underwood, Hoppe, etc. Bound in marbled boards with green cloth spines with paper title labels. Housed in supplied slipcase of scarle silk cloth. Some wear and minor scattered foxing to both volumes. This copy inscribed "To Harrison Post with cordial personal greetings", Assistant Librarian of William Andrews Clark Library and said to be VERY close personal friend of Clark. Please see photos for damage to cloth spines and paper title labels. For some reason my beagle thought these looked tasty and decided to nibble on them. Condition is as shown but all damage is as shown to the spines and paper labels - the rest of both volumes have no nibble damage. Original sets in this condition with the well-known recipients go for over $1,000.00 - this is priced to reflect the beagle damage.

[Women] [Suffrage] [Theatre] [Marlowe, Julia] Genthe, Arnold
New York: Arnold Genthe, 1920. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern. Very Good. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned.Arnold Genthe, who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio, moved to New York in 1911, where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins, otherwise excellent, with some light normal tanning to mount.[Attributes: First Edition]

The number 7 is placed on a tree-trunk. The game is played with two dice. Whoever rolls one of the numbers on the moon has to deposit a coin, but if the number is already occupied the player passes the dice to the next. Whoever throws two wins the coins on the moon, and rolling twelve wins all the coins on the board.
