Fitzgerald, F Scott
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. First edition of Fitzgerald's first novel, with an initial printing of only 3,000 copies, which sold out in three days. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper with a full page inscription, "For William Henneman with best wishes - this old old book; the sight of it reminds me, all too dramaticly [sic], that I'm almost forty. F. Scott Fitzgerald Spring 1936." In very good condition with a small closed tear to the crown of the spine and light rubbing to the extremities, hinges strengthened. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A unique example displaying Fitzgerald's thoughts about his early writing. This Side of Paradise is the debut novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It takes its title from a line of Rupert Brooke's poem Tiare Tahiti, the book examines the lives and morality of post-World War I youth. The novel's hero, Amory Blaine, is a handsome, spoiled young man who attends Princeton, becomes involved in literary activities and has several ill-fated romances. A portrait of the Lost Generation, the novel addresses Fitzgerald's later theme of love distorted by social climbing and greed" (Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature). Fitzgerald was still at university when he submitted the manuscript, then titled The Romantic Egoist, to Charles Scribner, whom he had known at Princeton. It was published on 26 March 1920, was an immediate success, and launched Fitzgerald's literary career.

We're speculating that the stories represent fruits of a brief collaboration between Oliver Kehrlein and a professional writer, Nancy Buckley. . Stories feature well known Sierra Nevada locations: Hetch Hetchy Valley, Storm King, Mount Whitney, Lyell Canyon. Another story features Mt. Shasta. (Germany): S & C., 1920. Three die-cut bottom fold easel-back figures comprising two Santas and a Christmas Tree. Each figure stands 5 3/4" high. The two Santa figure are shown holding a doll, teddy bear, a jester and a Christmas bush. One Santa is shown in his traditional red greatcoat and hat, trimmed in fur; the other sports a blue coat and hat. When opened each reveals a die-cut little girl paper doll -- each holding a doll. Additionally they have four (4) outfits and hats and an extra toy or two, and the outfits are numbered. The interior of the folder has slots for housing the doll and her costumes. Each folder marked at base S. & C. No. 380 and the letter A, B. or C. Given the nature of its construction, and the audience for which it was intended, having all three cards together is quite rare. Blue Santa separated at base with minimal stabilizing reinfocement; Christmas tree may be lacking top branch with star; the doll set lacks one hat.

Berlin: Verlag Ross/Film-Sterne, 1920. Softcover. vg- to near fine. Oblong octavo. 8x11". String-tied brown paper wrappers with decorative black silhouette motif on the front cover. This photo-album contains 27 photo-postcards of American actress and filmmaker Fern Andra (1893-1974), who was among the leading silent film stars in Germany during the 1910s and 20s. Andra was a pioneering female filmmaker and entrepreneur in that by 1915 (at the age of 21) she was writing, directing, producing and staring in films from her own production company "Fern Andra-Film". These days she is perhaps best known for having starred in Robert Wiene's 1920 horror film "Genuine: The Tragedy of a Vampire", considered a follow-up to his groundbreaking "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari". By 1928 she moved to the UK and then back to the United States. By 1930 she had retired from acting and filmmaking. Most of the cards are printed in sepia-toned photogravure, and the last two are actual silver gelatin photographic prints. The cards were produced by Verlag Ross and Film-Sterne (the same company under a previous name), and have identification numbers printed in the lower left corner. 21 of the cards bare the additional stamp of "Atelier Fern Andra", in the bottom right corner of the images, which seem to indicate that they were self-produced photo shoots by Andra's own business. 10 images are depict Andra in posed relaxed scenes at home, 7 of those include a caption stating "in ihrem heim" (in her home). 3 images show her in interestingly composed mirror shots sitting on the ground next to a sofa. 1920. Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 102 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Helen Twelvetrees, Fred Scott, Richard Carle, Marie Astaire, dir: Fred C. Newmeyer; Pathe Exchange. Wonderful stone litho poster for what is believed to be a lost film. Edmund Goulding, well-known director of the 1920s-30s, was also a prolific writer and had started as an actor/playwright and director on the London stage before coming to the U.S. This story was about a minstrel song man who is known as "Come Back" because of his problem with drink. This early talkie, made just after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, was an attempt to explore in film the tragedies of alcoholism. It gave Helen Twelvetrees a grand role in her best weeping tradition: that of a burlesque actress who becomes pregnant, is thrown over for a showgirl and contemplates suicide. Show biz and the romantic triangle are the themes of this poster. On linen, with light touch-up only to blank margins and fold lines, NEAR FINE.

First edition. Trained at Heatherley's, the Royal Academy Schools, the Munich Academy, and École des Beaux-Arts, at the outbreak of the War in 1914 Solomon was well-established as a society portraitist and painter of popular biblical, mythological, and other genre subjects. Signed up as a private in the Artist's Rifles, he began to promote his ideas about the importance and application of camouflage through the press, eventually attracting the attention of the War Office. Late in 1915, Plumer arranged for Solomon to visit the Western Front to study the techniques being employed by the French École de Camouflage, which was headed by the head scene painter from the Opéra de Paris. As a result he was sent to France to establish a camouflage section, Haig having arranged that he be given the temporary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in order for him to be able to carry forward the section's work effectively. ' Special relativity applies to elementary particles and their interactions, describing all their physical phenomena except gravity. 1920. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1905. 32 pp ads dated "5.05". Original blue/black cloth stamped in black and in gilt. First Edition of Edward Morgan Forster's first book, which consisted of only 1,050 copies; 526 more copies were printed in early 1906, but otherwise this novel would not have an American edition until 1920, nor a second UK edition until 1924 -- by which time Forster had made his name with THE LONGEST JOURNEY (1907), A ROOM WITH A VIEW (1908), HOWARD'S END (1910), and A PASSAGE TO INDIA (1924). This is the sad tale of Lilia Herriton, a widow in her early thirties with a nine-year-old daughter, who journeys to Italy and falls in love with an Italian many years her junior. When she dies in childbirth, the tug-of-war for the baby begins (between her original in-laws, the young woman who had accompanied her on the trip to Italy, and of course the Italian father) -- culminating in (spoiler alert!) the kidnapping and death of the baby. This copy has the ads in the earliest of the three variants -- with no mention of this book on p. 12, and with the date "5/05" on the final page. Condition is very good-plus (minor wear at the spine ends, spine a bit dulled, one bumped corner, W.H. Smith railway bookstall label on the front paste-down). Quite a scarce book. Kirkpatrick A1a. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking.
