1920. One of a series of five photographs known as The Cottingley Fairy pictures -- one of the great photographic hoaxes. Two young girls cousins, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, produced the five pictures (two in 1917 and three more in 1920) using the camera which belonged to Elsie's father and taking them while playing in the garden of Elsie's home in Cottingley. In 1919 Elsie's mother took the first two pictures to a meeting of the Theosophical Society where all assembled were enthralled. They came to the attention of one of leaders, Edward Gardner, at the society's annual conference, who had them "authenticated" by photographer Harold Snelling who declared them "genuine unfaked photographs of single exposure". The images began circulating among the English spiritualist community, which included Arthur Conan Doyle. It was Doyle who urged the girls to take more photographs in 1920 -- this image is from that group. Some years later Gardner published Fairies: The Cottingley Photographs and Their Sequel. He described this image #4 as taken August 1920. Camera: Cameo Quarter. He explains why Elsie does not seem to be looking directly at the fairy: "With fairy lovers the habit of looking at first a little sideways is common". The seriousness of this description underscores the importance of these photographs to spiritualists of the early 20th century, and the absurdity as well. The photographs are sometimes found on cardstock mounts with printed captions underneath. This silver gelatin print, with a darkened caption, we believe to be a bit later, and probably produced for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stawell, Mrs. Rodolph; Dulac, Edmund (Illustrator)
Hodder and Stoughton Limited, 1920. Dulac, Edmund. Hardcover. Quarto size, 169 pp., 8 color plates. Very good +. Reprint of the new and enlarged edition of 1913, this published in 1920 with the same title page (other than the imprint) and the same number of colour plates; what distinguishes this edition from that of 1913 is the elaborate publisher's trade binding. While the bottom of the front board depicts the elf "Drop-of-Crystal" at work, taken from the illustration facing p. 86, the upper portion of the front board is a fantasia of hanging fuschias in pinks and blues, with green leaves, all above billowing clouds outlined with gilt; one of the most stunning trade bindings we have seen. Per Hughey, upon publication the book was received most favourably: " 'Fairies I have Met' was reviewed in Outlook in its Literary Supplement of New Children's Books, November 9, 1907. The reviewer spoke of the book as 'charmingly illustrated in colour by Edmund Dulac.' It would be hard to disagree. The new and enlarged edition of 1913 was reviewed most favorably in Church Times and Spectator. With pictures here, Dulac displays a style much more humorous and whimsical than that of his illustrations for the Bronte novels 2 years earlier. The subjects are painted at close range, in deep colours, creating bolder designs and showing much detail, as opposed to the distant misty room or landscape scenery of the Bronte work." The illustrations here are a bit transitional, as Dulac's later work, such as "The Arabian Nights" and the "Rubaiyat", become even more detailed and exquisite. ___DESCRIPTI … [Click Below for Full Description]

Einstein
henry holt. very good. Relativity, Albert Einstein. Henry Holt 1920. 1920 stated on title page. Front pastedown replaced with archival paper. Covers with very minor damage: gold on spine is greened, minor staining, pinhead dent to rear board. Corners firm, spine ends firm. No smell. No foxing or spotting. Facsimile dust jacket created by me so that I could print on thicker archival paper. This one will not tatter so easily over the years. Now in Brodart cover for extra protection. I also have two 1921 copies, second printings, if you want the same book for somewhat less money. Just ask me about them. They are also in this special dust jacket. And, I have a 1920 Principle of Relativity, translated by Saha and Bose in Calcutta. This is vanishingly rare and very valuable, so valuable I cannot list it with anything else on Ebay. It is above my limit. But if this is what you are looking for, we will work something out. I can wait and list it for you by itself, right at the limit. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Albert Einstein
New York: Holt. Very good copy of the first 1920 US edition by Einstein. RELATIVITY The Special and General Theory by Dr. Albert Einstein Published by Henry Holt, New York in 1920 First American Edition (and the first non-technical work written by Albert Einstein about his Theory of General and Special Relativity in English) AN IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT BOOK , and Albert Einstein's most important book. Overall a very good copy in the first edition of a very important book, with title page dated 1920 and published in New York by Henry Holt and Company, and with the frontis portrait of Einstein. The book is in its original blue cloth with a bit of soiling to boards, as shown in my photos, and with two faint white soil areas to rear board (that could be removed by a conservator). Front cover imprinting in dulled gold, spine imprinting in dulled green as is usually found with this rare book. The front upper right corner of the front cover is a bit bumped and what looks like a damp stain from long ago. This bumping extends to about the first 33 pages or so, but not objectionable, but noted here. The blue cloth spine ends have been pushed in over the many decades with two horizontal splits in the cloth as shown in my photos, but no loss of the blue cloth. There is no real shelving wear to the corners of the boards, which is uncommon. This book is square and sound without NY cocking or slant to the volume. The interior hinges are sound, the end papers clean (a small circular book-sellers label affixed to the inner corner of the rear fixed end paper). End papers with very light fox … [Click Below for Full Description]

YEATS, W. B.
Dundrum: The Cuala Press, 1920. Original buff linen-backed blue boards, printed paper label to spine, front board lettered in black, blue endpapers, edges untrimmed. With the plain paper dust jacket. Contemporary cataloguing loosely inserted. Very faint browning to front cover and endpapers; else a fine copy in the scarce, faintly soiled, jacket with lchips to spine ends, loss to head of front panel and a couple of small closed tears. Title page vignette by Thomas Sturge Moore and colophon printed in red. First edition, first impression, one of 400 copies printed by Elizabeth Yeats on All Souls Day 1920, very scarce in the jacket, and containing the first appearance of "The Second Coming". Michael Robartes and the Dancer is an important Yeats collection, notable for its mythical imagining of contemporary politics. Robartes is the fictional leader of Order of the Alchemical Rose, first created by Yeats for his short story "Rosa Alchemica" in The Secret Rose (1898). In this collection Yeats posits Robartes as his real source for the mystical wisdom of an obscure Arab sect called the Judwalis, which Yeats claimed to be channelling in his poetry. The work is an attractive and important volume, containing "Easter, 1916" and perhaps Yeats's most famous poem, "The Second Coming", and is an early example of Yeats's mysticism entering into his verse. AURIC Georges & DUREY Louis & HONEGGER Arthur & COCTEAU Jean & APOLLINAIRE Guillaume & CEZANNE Paul & RENOIR Auguste & POULENC Francis & BONNARD Pierre & DENIS Maurice
Fitzgerald, F. Scott
Charles Scribner's Sons. Hardcover. First edition, second printing (April, 1920). The author's first novel, which takes its title from a line in Rupert Brooke's poem Tiare Tahiti. Fitzgerald displays his unparalleled wit and keen social insight in this portrayal of college life through the struggles and doubts of Amory Blaine, a self-proclaimed genius with a love of knowledge and a penchant for the romantic. As Blaine journeys into adulthood and leaves the aristocratic egotism of his youth behind, he becomes painfully aware of his lost innocence and the new sense of responsibility and regret that has taken its place. The novel remains crucial to an understanding about the changes of the Jazz Age and their effects on the individual. Octavo. Original dark bluish green cloth binding, with gilt and blind-stamped titles. Some general dust staining to the top edge, with a bit of mild foxing along the extremities. The boards are clean and bright, with just a hint of wear to the corners and tips. A very good copy, accompanied by a pristine facsimile dust jacket. Bruccoli A5.1.b. Very good.

Strobl, Karl Hans, Alfons von Czibulka (editors); Leo Perutz,
Dreilander Verlag, 1920. Collection of 38 issues of the landmark Weimar-era periodical highlighting fantasy, horror, and early science fiction stories. Text in German. One of the world's first fantasy periodicals, (alongside the Swedish "Hugin") "Der Orchideengarten" featured a mix of new German stories alongside translations of foreign literature (largely French), including works by Victor Hugo, Guy de Maupassant, Voltaire, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Joseph Capek, H.G. Wells, and many others. The magazine also made forays into the proto-science fiction genre, as seen in Vol. 2 No. 4, entitled "Phantastik der Technik." A true product of the Weimar era's cultural blossoming, the magazine also features stunning illustrations both with its two- and three-color cover art and its woodcut reproductions throughout: sinister yet elegant visions of anthropomorphic flowers, religious idols, Grim Reapers, and gory deaths. "Der Orchideengarten" featured the work of Gustave Dore, Otto Linnekogel, Karl Ritter, Alfred Kubim, Carl Rabus, Otto Nuckel, and many more. This archive contains the following largely sequential issues: Vol.1, Nos.1-18 (16 and 17 published as a combined issue); Vol.2, Nos.1-6, 8, 10-16, 18-24. 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm), saddle stitched. Very Good to Near Fine condition. In a custom quarter leather clamshell box.

Sinclair Lewis, very good+ condition, Selling as a Lot
1920. Very Good+/Very Good. Selling as a lot of 6 books by private seller, 1st editions by Sinclair Lewis, all hard back in very good condition. Copyright dates-1920(Arrowsmith), 1922(Babbit),1925(Bethel Merriday,1935(It can't happen here),1938(Main Street),1940(The Prodigal Parents). Publisher: P. F. Collier & Son, Very Good condition. First trade edition, after a limited signed edition. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize (which Lewis refused) and probably the book most influential in his winning the Nobel Prize (the first American author so honored). Sinclair Lewis was born in 1885 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and graduated from Yale University in 1908. His college career was interrupted by various part-time occupations, including a period working at the Helicon Home Colony, Upton Sinclair's socialist experiment in New Jersey. He worked for some years as a free lance editor and journalist, during which time he published several minor novels. But with the publication of Main Street (1920), which sold half a million copies, he achieved wide recognition. This was followed by the two novels considered by many to be his finest, Babbitt (1922) and Arrowsmith (1925), which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1926, but declined by Lewis. In 1930, following Elmer Gantry (1927) and Dodsworth (1929), Sinclair Lewis became the first American author to be awarded the Nobel Prize for distinction in world literature. This was the apogee of his literary career, and in the period from Ann Vickers (1933) to the posthumously published World So Wide (1951) Lewis wrote ten novels that reveal the progre … [Click Below for Full Description]
