[Germany], 1920. Oblong album measuring 9" x 6.5" approx. String-bound in red glossy-coated cloth. 42 gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.5" x 2.25" approx. glue mounted rectos only to 25 leaves, most interleaved with tissue. Boards lightly rubbed at edges with top corner of front board bumped. Some creasing and edge-wear to tissue guards. One photo perished, else apparently complete. Photographs generally fine. Sound and clean overall. Near fine. Near fine. Elegant and carefully-assembled photo album of bathers in and around an unidentified lakeside German resort, likely in the years following WWI. The album combines well-composed candid and posed shots of bathers with striking portraits that together reveal a talented photographer, a kind of Jazz Age Jock Sturges. A work of uncommon unity and execution, an accomplished and tender vernacular photobook of German bathing culture.

LENIN, N. [Vladimir Il'ich Ulyanov]
Tsentrispolkoma R.F.K.P.A, 1920. First American Edition. A key post-revolutionary essay by Lenin, attacking Kautsky and the Mensheviks for holding a reactionary and counterrevolutionary line, specifically for the positions articulated in Kautsky's essay "The Dictatorship of the Proletariat," published in Vienna in 1918. This is the first title issued under the imprint of the R.F.K.P.A., the publishing arm of Regarding the American publishing history of this title, we quote the Swedish auction house Stockholms Auktionswerk: "This edition was printed in an edition of about 1,000 copies and distributed by Max Maisel (a Russian born book dealer, who specialized in Russian radical literature; he was also the first publisher of Karl Marx in the USA). Maisel was not able to sell too many copies of the book, and almost the entire run was kept in his warehouse up to the early 1950's. After the death of Maisel the entire stock of his company was sold to a prominent Russian bookdealer Nicholas Martianoff, a former associate and one time secretary of Kerensky. Martianoff considered all radical literature held at Maisel's shop wothless and sent it to a paper mill in New York." [http://auktionsverket.com/auction/rare-books/2015-06-16/6257-rare-edition-of-lenin-s-pamphlet-on-kautsky-1920/] The book is thus something of a Lenin rarity, at least in commerce (we note only one copy at auction -- at the above- referenced Stockholm house -- and none others currently offered in the trade); this is the only copy we have seen or handled. English and Finnish editions appeared in the U.S. the same y … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hamilton, Sir Ian
Doran. First US edition, 1920, 2 volumes, red cloth gilt titled on spine, inscribed by Hamilton in 1928 to book collector and military attaché Aage Nilsen. Very good crisp set, rarely found inscribed. Hamilton was responsible for English operations at Gallipoli but failed in his efforts and in the execution of his strategies; he had been appointed by Kitchener to take control of the land forces (78,000 men) -- Kitchener failed in his naval strategy, Hamilton likewise on land, and it was the only major victory during the war for the Ottoman Empire. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

HARDY, Thomas
Harper and Brothers, 1920. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 21 volumes. A very nice, clean set in 3/4 burgundy morocco over maroon cloth boards, bound uniformly by Stikeman, with gilt spines. The front board of Volume I ("Tess") is detached, but present. Many corners show rubbing through the leather, but there are no "bumps" to speak of. Otherwise, apart from the occasional blemish, it's a nice, crisp, sturdy set with no foxing or markings, overall very good or better. Spine gilt is uniformly bright, and the spines are not at all faded, making for an excellent presentation. Pity about the front board of volume I, which could be repaired by a competent binder. Though there is no limitation statement or number on this set (bizarrely), it is one of 1250 copies of these complete works, most of which were issued in cloth. Though out of series, this is the preferred, handsomer binding. Very good.

Ludendorff, Erich
Ernst Siegfried Mittler und Sohn. Both printed 1920, the first volume is 5. Auflage, signed by Ludendorff on flyleaf and with the recipient's address (Mr. Aage Nilsen, Grand Central Terminal) possibly in Ludendorff's hand on a piece of paper tipped to pastedown; second volume is a first printing, 1920, inscribed with two lines in pencil and signed, dated 1927, also with a similar piece of paper bearing Nilsen's address tipped to flyleaf. Both volumes are large 8vo 99.5 inches, 24 cm), mustard cloth backed paper covered boards with spine decorations in red and black, covers printed in red and black against tan background, very good, light strain to inner hinge of second volume and with just a touch of edgewear to preliminary pages; printed on tanning and slightly brittle paper, but a very good well preserved set, with the first volume have a pocket at rear containing ten maps and charts as called for. Ludendorff was, alongside Hindenburg, in command of the German military strategy and efforts during WWI from 1916-1918, winning some major battles, before the Spring Offensive of 1918 ended in failure, with Ludendorff demoted in October 1918. After that he engaged in far right nationalist politics, blaming Jews and Bolsheviks for the failure of his military strategy, a participant in Hitler's Beer Hall Putsch, and a strong advocate of "total war" in which he argued that peace is just an interval between wars, not the other way around. An uncommon signature, and both volumes rarely found together. Very Good.

New York: Heny Holt and Company, 1920. Here's your chance to own a treasured piece of world/scientific history!! Relativity -The Special & General Theory by ALBERT EINSTEIN ~ First Edition (US) 1920 Printed in New York By Henry Holt And Company Great shape overall! Though there is a stain on the bottom of the front cover. No structural issues. Very light wear to edges on pages/hardcover. Has "750-" written VERY lightly in pencil on first blank page in top corner. No other writing or owner marks. Label has been removed from inside of front cover. The blue color of the cover is closer to the 4th picture. The cover appears more faded in the pictures than in person. I for the life of me could not get the contrast adjusted correctly. Einstein
henry holt. very good. Relativity, Albert Einstein. Henry Holt 1920. 1920 stated on title page. Front pastedown replaced with archival paper. Covers with very minor damage: gold on spine is greened, minor staining, pinhead dent to rear board. Corners firm, spine ends firm. No smell. No foxing or spotting. Facsimile dust jacket created by me so that I could print on thicker archival paper. This one will not tatter so easily over the years. Now in Brodart cover for extra protection. I also have two 1921 copies, second printings, if you want the same book for somewhat less money. Just ask me about them. They are also in this special dust jacket. And, I have a 1920 Principle of Relativity, translated by Saha and Bose in Calcutta. This is vanishingly rare and very valuable, so valuable I cannot list it with anything else on Ebay. It is above my limit. But if this is what you are looking for, we will work something out. I can wait and list it for you by itself, right at the limit. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kemble, E. W.
n.p. n.p., n.d., 1920's. Stiff card. An original pen and ink sketch by Edward Winsor Kemble produced for "The Youth's Companion", an early 20th century juvenile journal. The sketch 6½ by 8½ inches and with printer's marks along the bottom. Titled in pencil: "De Ox and de Frog". On the reverse is a sticker noting that the sketch has been published by The Youth's Companion as well as a notation, "Original Art". The Tale of the Ox and the Frog appears in AEsop, also in La Fontaine and possibly in Uncle Ned's Old Tales Retold. It describes a mother frog inflating herself to the point of bursting (and in some versions beyond that point) as she imitates the size of an ox. And indeed in Kemble's sketch we se a large chested female frog standing over a mushroom table addressing two frog-children. Cropped closely on the sides just touching the image else this is in very nice condition. Very good. Item #19162.

Trained as an artist and a lawyer, his main interests were literature, philosophy, archaeology, and especially art.
