Cordier, Henri
London: John Murray, 1920. First edition of French historian Henri Cordier's supplement to Yule's important work which correlated Polo's travels with their present-day locations. Octavo, original green cloth with elaborate tooling to the spine stamped in blue, blue spine labels lettered in gilt, vignette of the giant elephant bird which Polo described in his original account, frontispiece. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket which is in very good condition. Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo's travels were first recorded in his Livre des merveilles du monde (Book of the Marvels of the World, also known as The Travels of Marco Polo, c. 1300), a book that described to Europeans the wealth and great size of China, its capital Peking, and other Asian cities and countries. Centuries later, Scottish Orientalist Henry Yule's most important contribution was in clarifying Polo's routes by identifying and matching the medieval geographic place names used by Polo and his transcribers with their actual present-day locations and names. Cordier's supplement contains new information obtained as a result of voyages undertaken by Sir Aurel Atein, Scen Hedin, Pelliot and others.

Huxley, Aldous
The First UK printing published by Chatto and Windus in 1920. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine tips. The paper label to the spine is complete and only very slightly marked. The top-stain is still present but lightly faded and marked. Slight toning and occasional spotting to the text-block. Light offsetting to the end-papers with an attractive former owner's bookplate (designed by the artist G. H. Holloway) to the front pastedown. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Priced at '5/- net' to the spine. Mild edge wear with some loss at the spine ends. Toning to the edges and spine but the lettering is still legible. Closed tears to the upper front flap fold and the lower rear flap fold. Light creasing to the front panel and a closed tear to the middle of the rear panel. A small professional Japanese tissue repair to the verso of the spine. The scarce wrapper remains very presentable in the removable Brodart archival cover. The author's first work of prose and exceptionally scarce with the original wrapper - I cannot see any auction records for a copy with its wrapper in the last 20 years. Duvernois, Henri
Very Good. Likely 1920s (it was found inserted into a copy of Morte la Bête -1926 - that Duvernois had given Edmond Roze, a theatrical director and producer and his wife Jeanne Silvain, an actress, in 1928). The sheets measure roughly 8.5 x 5.5 inches, are held together with a brass folding tack, labeled 'Acte III' on first page, and lightly written in pencil 'Mss of Henri Duvernois' - probably by Jeanne Silvain, who married an American after Roze's death at Auschwitz and came to live near Pittsburgh. Duvernois (1875-1937) is best known these days as a screenwriter but also published several plays in multiple acts through the 1920s and it is entirely conceivable that he gave a sample of a play to Roze to consider producing. We're not sure if this is part of a published work.

Each book separately issued by diff. publishers and then slightly later uniformly bound by an early sophisticated collector. All in lovely c.90-100 year old English stamped half leather bindings. All bindings "gilt stamp signed" by Hatchard's of Picadilly, London, likely mid-to late 1920's-early 1930's. Raised bands, spines lettered with compartments gilt ruled in outline, each spine with year of publication gilt stamped at base. Marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Beautiful shelf appearance. Minor light small signs of handling and age, inoffensive scattered small patches of sun fading or slight discoloration to some covers along extremities or joints. At times minor light scattered foxing to text block paper. Attractive early owner's custom bookplates to paste downs.
