Then he became the firm's managing director of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai. In his photographs Mennie tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including "The Pageant of Peking", "Glimpses of China" , "China North and South" and "The Grandeur of the Gorges". Mennie's photographs illustrated "My Lady of the Chinese Courtyard" by Elizabeth Cooper (1914) and "The Great River: The story of a voyage on the Yangtze Kiang" by Gretchen Fitkin … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEIGHTON, J. Harold.
1920s–1940s. Approximately 80 mostly gum bichromate (also known as gum dichromate) prints, each 4¼ x 6 inches (10.8 x 15.2 cm.), most inscribed by Leighton below in pencil, many also titled on verso, mounted on thick card, some with tissue guards, 33 with exhibition labels or information on verso; presented in original cloth-covered folding portfolio with Leighton's bookplate on inside cover; very seldom, minor spots, some creases or tears to guards, portfolio a little worn, but overall a very excellent set of prints. An impressive international exhibition portfolio - by renowned Pictorialist and an expert in this process.Leighton, a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and prominent Pictorialist from Bradford, was a great promoter of the gum bichromate process. He said that 'among the many photographic printing processes there is none more fascinating than thegum-bichromate. It lends itself especially to pictorial work, and has the great advantage of being cheap. There are no doubt many ways of working the process, and I should imagine every worker has his own particular way of working according to the results he wishes to obtain' (The American Annual of Photography, Vol. 38, 1924, p. 40). The ability to manipulate the process to achieve one's own artistic ends was part of the appeal of this very 'hands-on' method of photographic printing. At its simplest the photographer coated a piece of paper with a mixture of a salt (usually ammonium or potassium bichromate), gum arabic and a coloured pigment. This sensitized paper was placed in contact with the negative and exposed … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LABOR HISTORY] [STEEL WORKERS] VORSE, Mary Heaton
New York: Boni and Liveright, [1920]. First Edition. Paperback. Contemporary account of the American steel strike, organized by the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers in September, 1919, in the wake of the end of World War I in an effort to reorganize the industry, though the strike ended unsuccessfully in January, 1920. This a significant association copy of the former Republican governor of Michigan (1911-1913), who noted in pencil on p. 17, in response to the massive U.S. Steel Corporation's surplus at the end of 1919: "Thou must not tread on the sensitive toes of dollars; rather on the hearts of men," adding on the following page, "rather on the bleeding hearts of mankind." Previous to his political activities, Osborn travelled widely, discovering iron mines in both Canada and Madagascar; for this, one of his memoirs was titled "The Iron-Hunter." Mary Heaton Vorse was herself a radical novelist, journalist, and editor of "The Masses," and while her relationship with Osborn is unclear, we find reference to a few pieces of correspondence, dated between 1913 and 1920, in the Mary Heaton Vorse Papers at Wayne University. Wrapper issue. Octavo; publisher's white pictorial card wrappers; vi,[9]-185pp. Wrappers rather spotted, crude spine tape repair, textblock a bit toned, else Good to Very Good, internally sound. Inscribed and signed by the author in pencil on front free endpaper to former Governor of Michigan Chase S. Osborn with his ex libris inside upper cover and three extensive initialed pencil annotations to early leaves of text. [Attributes: Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

The author's first appointment in Arabia was as Resident at Aden in 1867; he was later made Agent and Consul at Muscat before being promoted Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel". The book remains an authority on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interested in the Arabian Gulf. An very uncommon and desirable work. Rare. 1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

Piegan Blackfeet] [Advocacy] [Photography] Schuster, Christian F.
Montana, 1920. Christian F. Schuster was a lumber man, boy scout and amateur archaeologist from Holyoke, Massachusetts who spent a series of seventeen summers living with the Piegan Blackfeet beginning in 1923. He was given the name Aainiakoi Plitaa, or, Morning Eagle by the Piegan chief Curly Bear in an adoption ceremony. The collection here documents his adoption by the Piegan tribe. Composed of sixty-three photographs, is one of the most striking visual records we have encountered of American Indian life from this period, due to the sympathetic eye of the photographer and visually arresting hybrid technique of watercolor, pencil and photographic exposure at work in the images. We cannot confirm the identity of the artist further, but it is possible that it was Lone Wolf, or Hart Merriam Schultz, the son of James Willard Schultz, who was a prolific artist and illustrator during this period. Lone Wolf would later operate a guest house called the Lone Wolf Guest Ranch and Club, and we have found another account of a white adoptee purchasing some artwork from Lone Wolf in the early 1930s. The hybrid technique at work here was also used by De Lancey Gill, the prominent BAE photographer, taught to him by William Henry Holmes. Schuster himself took at least some of the photographs, as noted in the captions. The images show life among the Blackfeet several decades after the last buffalo hunts had failed in 1882, in a period when this and government policy had made reservation life difficult. Akipuni, or James Willard Schultz, is featured in several of the images, along with Curl … [Click Below for Full Description]
