Illustrated with twenty monochrome plates. With three pages of press notes to the rear. Collated, complete. A pictorial look at the Black Country. The Black Country is an area in the West Midlands in England, containing Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, and Wolverhampton. The area is so named as it was heavily affected by the Industrial Revolution, being industrialised with coal mines, iron foundries, glass factories, steel mills, and more. All of this new industrial business produced a high level of pollution. The drawings were inspired by the artist's travels during the First World War, when he travelled between Liverpool and London by train. On this journey, he saw much of the industrial landscape of the Black Country, and was inspired to create this work. The plates show bold shapes and geometric patterns. They are all woodcuts, and all printed in black paint, depicting moody scenes of the Black Country. Illustrated by the English Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth, who was known for his coastal views and still lives. He … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elmer D. Raymond
1920. Around The World: Letters From A Globetrotter. Very Good. Hardcover. As the world moved on from the horrors of WWI, people began think more and more about travelling to other parts of the world. In some cases, they may have had a taste of it from the experience of going to other countries in the war. In other circumstances, the increasing prosperity of the Twenties (1920s) made such travel now possible for a wider segment of the population. Elmer D Raymond formed the "Round-the-World Society" and became its leader calling himself a "Globetrotter." His solicitation offered to send letters "from the mighty metropolises of European civilization, from the squalid villages of African savagery, from the icy wastes of the Arctic, [and] from the barren sands of the deserts" to all who subscribed to his service. It's unknown how many people subscribed to become members of the Society. These folded letters were written by Raymond and sent to members of the "Round-the-World Society" without envelopes but stamped and postmarked from the visited countries. They would be compiled and saved and bound into volumes with inserts and a pull-out map of the world. Entitled, "Letters From a Globetrotter", when read, they would be an accurate commentary of the shrinking world as it existed in 1925 and 1926. Each of Raymond's letters consist of three type-written pages. Each is numbered using Roman numerals. Each letter has the postmarked postage stamps still affixed. All have individual titles such as In the Nest of Pirates, The Dancing Nigger is in Town, With the Spani … [Click Below for Full Description]

The second of the sketches is executed on orange card and is tipped in following the first title page which itself announces the suite of woodcuts on 'japon' that precedes the full text with woodcuts. No titles to spine. A series of articles originally published in the Dearborn Independent between May 1920 and May 1922. An example of American anti-semitic writings following World War 1 190 x 125 mm (7½ x 5 inches). 236, 256, 256, 246. pages. Overall in fairly good condition. The articles were either written, sponsored or directed by industrialist Henry Ford. Henry Ford has been called "the most influential American anti-Semite" of his time and his writings and proclamations "revealed the existence of a strong anti-Semitic bias in the citadels of heavy industry." In his book *A Mask for Privilege: anti-Semitism in America" Carey McWilliams had this to say about Henry Ford: "Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent in the issue of May 20. 1920, suddenly discovered 'the Jewish problem.' There had been premonitory rumblings from the Sage of Dearborn. During the war years, he had vaguely intimated that a 'small clique' was pushing Wilson toward war. Ford had become by 1920 a world-famous figure, an oracle whose views were eagerly solicited on every domestic and international question. It … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bohla, Alois
Passau: Bohla - Verlag Neue Motive, 1920. First edition. Loose leaf. vg to fine. Quarto Portfolio. (1) 20 plates. Original gray quarter-cloth portfolio with color illustrated paper-covered boards and black lettering on cover with decorative paper-covered back board. Printed introduction pasted to inside front cover. When Bohla began his second portfolio, Neue Motive, it was meant to become an inspiration for the viewer and entice him or her to be active and creative in this field. The backdrop for this work is stated in the introduction by the author: "The study of nature serves as foundation from the outset. Not to copy nature, as a trained eye sees it, was the intention, something different could be created only when considering the form of the presentation. The objective is to create studies in a beautiful rendition, the extraction of decorative forms while applying complete freedom, recording the essence while omitting all ornateness is the general guideline. Starting with the choice of motifs diligence has to be applied. Useful native plants and animals are plentiful in nature. You can find them. magnifiers and mirrors might disclose hidden allures/charms. Happy and fresh colors are to be used. Tasteful lines and motifs emphasize a certain timelessness." (Introduction). The designs in this collection are similar to his first publication "Neue Motive für flächendeckende Verzierung" - in part based on the same botanical patterns of nature - this work is more abstract and is broadened by the addition of modern animal motifs. The transition from Jugendstil to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elkin Mathews, 1920. FIRST EDITION, pp. 128, crown 8vo, original quarter fawn linen and grey boards, lettered in black to upper board and backstrip, the latter with a few light spots, edges roughtrimmed and browned, free endpapers browned in part, small Japanese newspaper clipping (with ms. note '24.2.21 E. Pound') folded and laid in between Contents Page and first page of text with offset browning to both, the scarce printed dustjacket present (lacking backstrip panel, the portion of which displaying title is laid in at front), browned with some chipping, good. One of 1,000 copies in the trade edition. The dustjacket, recorded by Gallup, is seldom encountered; from the flaps we can see that it was originally a duck-egg blue - the typography has an Oriental touch that is not inappropriate. 1920. This amazing collection contains 600 Dell Paperbacks with fabulous illustrated covers, and an original Dell bookshelf, which would have been given to bookstores to display the paperbacks. This collection contains the first 600 books in the Dell "mapback" style including the very rare Dell Crossword puzzle books. Wooden bookshelf measures 14" x 14" x 54" and is marked on the back with "loaned for display of Dell books only." Overall very good. Most books are in very good condition with light wear to all edges and light soiling; there are some in good condition only, with moderate chipping, creasing and soiling; bookshelf has a few dings but is in very good condition. No publisher was better at creating a collectible style of book than Dell. Dell was first known as one of the largest publishers of magazines (between the 1920s-1940s) , and beginning in 1943 they entered into paperback book publishing with Dell Paperbacks. Because of their small size, the cover art was an important selling point. Dell Paperbacks led the publishing world using their "Keyhole" logo, vibrant and flashy airbrushed paintings, and for the first time, using the back cover as an equally important marketing space as the front. Nicknamed "mapbacks," most early Dell paperbacks had a colorful map showing the locale where the book's events took place. The genre published most often was mystery but also included romance, westerns, thrillers, science fiction, joke books and crossword puzzle books. These paperback books were massed produced and incredibly popular. Dell Paperbacks were sold in drugstores, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Los Angeles, 1920. Letters. Creases from mailing. Near Fine. Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler for a position as dramatic critic there even though Dreiser is "very much aware that in so far as THE EVENING POST is concerned any recommendation I may choose to offer in behalf of another may prove more of a hindrance than an aid." Dreiser goes on to state that Sayler "is one of a very few in America or elsewhere who correctly interpret the modern theatre with all its delicate threads of experiment and theory." Dixon, Maynard
[San Francisco], 1920. 74 leaves [46 cm x 39 cm] of handmade paper. The majority of the leaves have three uniform holes at the left. The portfolio contains 75 entries (28 are duplicates), as well as the title page, on handmade paper. All entries are in Dixon's distinctive hand, and include the title, size, date, and sometimes the location and disposition of the work. The cover is titled Paintings by Maynard Dixon, along with his distinctive Thunderbird symbol outlined in a circle. The entries were accompanied by original photographs done by noted San Francisco photographer Gabriel Moulin. Most of the Moulin photographs have been removed but five still remain. These photographs [24 cm x 17 cm] contain either Edith Hamlin's stamp or Gabriel Moulin's (and in many cases some pencil annotations, probably by Hamlin). The photographed paintings are: 'The Trading Post' - 'Corral Dust' - 'Camp in the Mountains' - 'Home Pastures' - 'The Old Cow Town'. Among the numerous entries are murals for Anita Baldwin's Indian Room and Jinks Room for her Arcadia home, The Old Trading Post, Corral Dust, Home Pastures, Pony Boy, Blackfeet Historians, Camp in the Mountains, The Navajos, The Story Tellers, From Range to Range, What an Indian Thinks, Cattle Country, Home of the Half-Breed, among others. A number of works are from his legendary 1917 trip to Montana. Dixon probably intended the portfolio as a document he could show prospective clients and for museum and gallery exhibitions. Although most of the photographs have been removed by Dixon or his third wife, Edith Hamlin, there is information … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

THARAUD Jérôme et Jean [Ernest et Charles, dits].
Plon, 1920. In-12 (184 x 118 mm), 4 ff. n. ch., 284 pp., 2 ff. n. ch. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Evans, C[harles] S[eddon]; Rackham, Arthur (Illustrations)
London: William Heinemann, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Rackham, Arthur. First trade edition, octavo size, 111 pp., in a custom binding by Katharine Pountney. One of the most beloved fairy tales of all time, "Sleeping Beauty" (sometimes titled "Little Briar Rose") was originally published by Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) in his "The Pentamerone" published posthumously in 1634, based on a tale of which our earliest traces date back to the 1330s or 1340s. Basile's version was later adapted and published by Charles Perrault in 1697, upon which the Brothers Grimm based their story. Therefore, when Charles Seddon Evans (1883-1944), of the publishing firm of William Heinemann, decided to edit the story to enable the inimitable Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) to have more text for his wonderful silhouette illustrations, he was going down a pathway already well-trodden. He described the feasts and discussed in detail the prince's attempts to prevent the evil spell, in order to make the story less violent and thus more acceptable to "modern" children and parents (n.b., from the "Quicklet on C.S. Evans's 'The Sleeping Beauty' " by Amber Larkins). While "Sleeping Beauty" only has one full-colour plate (the frontispiece), it is replete with Rackham's glorious silhouettes; with three double-page silhouette drawings with colour, two full-page silhouette drawings with colour, and six double and eight single-page silhouette drawings in black and white; it is also replete with in-text illustrations, and has lovely pictorial endpapers in green and white. In a custom bindin … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. Vintage original 55 x 78" (140 x 200 cm.) quattro folio / 4-fogli poster, Italy. Elisa Cegani, Frank Latimore, Vira Silenti. Giacomo Verlier, dir: Giorgio Bianchi; Athena Cinematografica / Rank Film. Based on a popular 1920s stage play by Dario Nicodemi, this is the story of a duchess who, for seemingly no reason, despises one of her two sons whom everyone else adores. A dark secret reveals her reasons for animosity. Â The artist Anselmo Ballester has created a great aura of suspense in his use of dark shades, the light coming through a slightly open door and the reaction in his portraiture of Elisa Cegani.
