Mel'nik, Tat'iana Evgen'evna (Botkina, 1899-1986)
1920. Harbin: self-published, 1920. First Edition. Octavo (22.5 × 15 cm). Original printed wrappers; 98, [1] pp. Very good. First edition of this early memoir of the Tsar and his relatives, by the daughter of their physician, Evgenii Sergeevich Botkin (1865-1918), who was murdered along with the Imperial Family in Ekaterinburg. Mel'nik claims to follow no political aims, but wishes to correct the slanderous accounts of the Imperial Family common among many émigrés. This copy likely from the collection of Petr Sergeevich Botkin (18??-1933), son of the physician of Tsar Alexander II and brother of the physician of Nicholas II, and the author's uncle. Botkin served as secretary of the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC, emissary to Portugal and Marocco. With the handwritten note "P. Botkinu" on the front wrapper, suggesting the book belonged to or was intended for Petr Botkin, perhaps in memory of his brother. A second edition was published in Belgrade in 1921; the first edition is very scarce. Savine 02202.

LEIGHTON, J. Harold.
1920s–1940s. Approximately 80 mostly gum bichromate (also known as gum dichromate) prints, each 4¼ x 6 inches (10.8 x 15.2 cm.), most inscribed by Leighton below in pencil, many also titled on verso, mounted on thick card, some with tissue guards, 33 with exhibition labels or information on verso; presented in original cloth-covered folding portfolio with Leighton's bookplate on inside cover; very seldom, minor spots, some creases or tears to guards, portfolio a little worn, but overall a very excellent set of prints. An impressive international exhibition portfolio - by renowned Pictorialist and an expert in this process.Leighton, a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and prominent Pictorialist from Bradford, was a great promoter of the gum bichromate process. He said that 'among the many photographic printing processes there is none more fascinating than thegum-bichromate. It lends itself especially to pictorial work, and has the great advantage of being cheap. There are no doubt many ways of working the process, and I should imagine every worker has his own particular way of working according to the results he wishes to obtain' (The American Annual of Photography, Vol. 38, 1924, p. 40). The ability to manipulate the process to achieve one's own artistic ends was part of the appeal of this very 'hands-on' method of photographic printing. At its simplest the photographer coated a piece of paper with a mixture of a salt (usually ammonium or potassium bichromate), gum arabic and a coloured pigment. This sensitized paper was placed in contact with the negative and exposed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Norman Wilkinson
UK, 1920. Original vintage travel poster published by the LMS London Midland and Scottish Railway promoting Ireland For Holidays Kingston (Dun Laoghaire) via Holyhead ? First class seaside resort and touring centre The Gateway to the beauties of Ireland Numerous holiday attractions. Stunning painting by the notable British artist and illustrator Sir Norman Wilkinson RI (1878-1971) depicting boats sailing on the calm sea in the harbour with seagulls flying around them, a commercial ferry liner next to the pier with the town's buildings and church steeples in front of green hills in the background, the stylised title text and information below. Dun Laoghaire (known as Dunleary until 1821; renamed Kingston following King George IV's visit to see the new port under construction in 1821; returning to its original Irish form of Dunleary - Dun Laoghaire - in 1920) is a coastal town in County Dublin in Ireland that was the principal port for ferries from Britain during the 1800-1900s; its historic harbour is one of the largest in the country. [LABOR HISTORY] [STEEL WORKERS] VORSE, Mary Heaton
New York: Boni and Liveright, [1920]. First Edition. Paperback. Contemporary account of the American steel strike, organized by the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers in September, 1919, in the wake of the end of World War I in an effort to reorganize the industry, though the strike ended unsuccessfully in January, 1920. This a significant association copy of the former Republican governor of Michigan (1911-1913), who noted in pencil on p. 17, in response to the massive U.S. Steel Corporation's surplus at the end of 1919: "Thou must not tread on the sensitive toes of dollars; rather on the hearts of men," adding on the following page, "rather on the bleeding hearts of mankind." Previous to his political activities, Osborn travelled widely, discovering iron mines in both Canada and Madagascar; for this, one of his memoirs was titled "The Iron-Hunter." Mary Heaton Vorse was herself a radical novelist, journalist, and editor of "The Masses," and while her relationship with Osborn is unclear, we find reference to a few pieces of correspondence, dated between 1913 and 1920, in the Mary Heaton Vorse Papers at Wayne University. Wrapper issue. Octavo; publisher's white pictorial card wrappers; vi,[9]-185pp. Wrappers rather spotted, crude spine tape repair, textblock a bit toned, else Good to Very Good, internally sound. Inscribed and signed by the author in pencil on front free endpaper to former Governor of Michigan Chase S. Osborn with his ex libris inside upper cover and three extensive initialed pencil annotations to early leaves of text. [Attributes: Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

The author's first appointment in Arabia was as Resident at Aden in 1867; he was later made Agent and Consul at Muscat before being promoted Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel". The book remains an authority on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interested in the Arabian Gulf. An very uncommon and desirable work. Rare.
