NATURAL HISTORY). DUMOULIN.
[Belgium, Herstal, prov. Liège, 1920s- c.1943]. The life work of a Belgian natural history enthusiast, a massive and extraordinary collection of gathered knowledge, illustrated throughout with thousands of the author's distinctive naive watercolours. The manuscript, in four volumes (one elephant folio, three folios), consists of complex visual arrangements of data which often extends over huge folded charts, each leaf filled to its maximum extent in neat manuscript in coloured inks. Though undated, it includes materials gathered in the period c. 1920-1943 and perhaps before, and in an inserted note, the otherwise unknown compiler describes the work of 'most of my life'. It would appear to be the work of an amateur rather than an academic specialist, hence its striking originality as a work of popular science. The large folio volume is really a huge collection of charts devoted to human anatomy, animal and plant biology, the fossil record and evolution (or transformisme). Botany makes up the largest proportion, but there are sections on insects, reptiles, birds, flying lizards, marsupials and mammals. Dumoulin also had an interest in Africa and there are sections on the Sahara and on the Belgian Congo. The focus is worldwide and is drawn from reference works rather than original research, but the arrangements are highly idiosyncratic. Several evolutionary charts are attempted, mentioning Linnaeus, Darwin, Lamarck and Jussieu. The Dictionnaire botanique is a large 3 volume compilation mainly devoted to botanical classification, from the smallest mosses and seaweeds, to exotic f … [Click Below for Full Description]

'Arthur Holmes' Box of Delights' [Twelve hand-painted wooden dioramas depicting hunting, shooting and fishing scenes]. 1920.A collection, complete in all its parts, of 12 individual hand-crafted, and numbered, three-dimensional landscaped scenes, or dioramas (all bases 163 x 95 x 10mm; the tallest insert 220mm), which are hand-painted throughout on all visible surfaces (including the oval bases, and sides) and composed of multi-layered scenery and characters which slot into the base together with exquisite detachable fishing rods with twine, floats and bait, landing birds, and even an angler's satchel with leather strap; the whole fashioned in wood and featuring a series of figures (adults and children) engaged in traditional rural pursuits of hunting, shooting and fishing; each signed on the base, in ink, by the maker Arthur Holmes, numbered, and dated 1920 throughout; all contained within a carefully constructed custom-made wooden slatted and lidded box with metal clasp (no longer functioning) and including internal compartments and trays with leather lifting tabs configured with outlines to indicate the storage plan. This lovingly, and painstakingly, hand-crafted personal artefact is testament to the great skill and patience of the creator and is a beautiful production that would not look out of place in a museum. Unfortunately we have no provenance to offer beyond the maker's (Arthur Holmes) signature throughout, as it originated from a provincial fair, with no associated history. It is tempting to speculate that the project was conceived as a diversional occupation unde … [Click Below for Full Description]

F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald. This Side of Paradise. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1920. The "author's apology" issue--one of 500 copies of the third printing of the first edition, signed by the author on a leaf tipped in before the title page, printed with his photograph and a note of thanks to the members of American Booksellers Association. A very good copy, tight and unmarked. The fault of note a shallow dampstain at the bottom edge of the rear board. The gilt lettering on the spine is dulled by time but intact, unworn. There are two tiny tears (about 3 millimeters) to the cloth at the head of the spine, just from being pulled off the shelf. But this copy was probably never read. No jacket is present. It's sometimes speculated that this issue was presented without one. The only "signed limited edition" of Fitzgerald's whole career--its authenticity will never be questioned. [Emmett, Id, 1920. About very good.. Broadside poster, 22.5 x 33.5 inches. Printed in blue and red on tan paper. Old folds. Light chipping and wear, minor loss at some corner folds. Pencil notations on verso. Fabulous broadside poster advertising the Fourth of July celebrations at Emmett, Idaho, a tiny town located a few miles northwest of Boise. With the bold headlines of "Celebrate at Emmett July 4th / Big Fireworks Display at Night" printed in red, the remainder is printed in blue, including several woodcuts. Activities for the day include a midnight frolic to kick of the Fourth, followed by a 4 a.m. salute, a parade and speeches later in the morning, a baseball game in the afternoon, then races and C.F. Zeiger's United Shows in the early evening, closing out with fireworks and a dance. The whole is sponsored by Post No. 49 of the American Legion. The poster further advertises concessions, free restrooms and lunch grounds, and prizes for the best parade floats. The verso has a contemporary pencil note which reads, "Program of the Big event at Emmett. Everybody welcome, bring plenty of cheer and a good appetite-- ordered Black Cherries, Pop, Post'O [?] and other delicacies -- Dad & Mom." Visually striking and rare.

1920. Antiquarian Book by Janina Markulan. The book talks about movie genres, starting with early 1920s. The book is in Russian and has lots of really cool black and white pictures. Some pages are lose, but none are missing. This item is for a real collector. Published in 1978. There are no known reissues and the ones still in circulation will probably be in a very poor condition. There were only 30 000 copies printed at the time, so the likelihood of you finding another copy 40 years after the fact is really low to nonexistent. The book is shipped insured via USPS Priority Mail. The shipping is free. Please ask me any and all questions before bidding. Янина Маркулан, Киномелодрама и Фильм Ужасов. Редкий экземпляр книги которая никогда не будет переиздана. Напечатано в 1978 году, малый тираж в 30 000 экземпляров. Книга в хорошем для её возраста состоянии.

DREISER, Theodore
Los Angeles: (1920). Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler for a position as dramatic critic there even though Dreiser is "very much aware that in so far as THE EVENING POST is concerned any recommendation I may choose to offer in behalf of another may prove more of a hindrance than an aid." Dreiser goes on to state that Sayler "is one of a very few in America or elsewhere who correctly interpret the modern theatre with all its delicate threads of experiment and theory." He says that he follows Sayler's recommendations "with a security which has not been misplaced. Also as an experimenter myself in the possibilities of the stage I have found him unusually understanding and symp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Germany, 1920. Oblong album measuring 9" x 6.5" approx. String-bound in red glossy-coated cloth. 42 gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.5" x 2.25" approx. glue mounted rectos only to 25 leaves, most interleaved with tissue. Sound and clean overall. Near fine. Near fine. Elegant and carefully-assembled photo album of bathers in and around an unidentified lakeside German resort, likely in the years following WWI. The album combines well-composed candid and posed shots of bathers with striking portraits that together reveal a talented photographer, a kind of Jazz Age Jock Sturges. A work of uncommon unity and execution, an accomplished and tender vernacular photobook of German bathing culture.

(NATURAL HISTORY). DUMOULIN.
[Belgium, Herstal, prov. Liège, 1920. Étude sur la transformisme: large oblong folio (640 × 840 mm) with original wooden display stand, c. 150 leaves, including several very large folding charts; Dictionnaire botanique: 3 vols, folio (340 × 200 mm), containing a total of more than 1200 leaves, various paper stocks, from heavy card to lighter paper. plus numerous blanks and dividing leaves (some with manuscript captions). All volumes fully completed with manuscript text and several thousand watercolour diagrams. Contemporary black morocco. The oblong folio volume with leaves towards the opening now loose, creasing and tears (without loss and mainly marginal or long folds) throughout, the 3 folio volumes in generally good condition. The large folio volume is really a huge collection of charts devoted to human anatomy … [Click Below for Full Description]

PATERSON, W. A.
Flint: Privately photographed, 1920., 1920. First edition. First edition. Oblong 9 1/4" x 65 1/2." With 12 silver gelatin photographs, 10 linen-backed, several w/ photographer’s stamp on verso, 10 mounted on linen hinges. Original black cloth split-pin post-binder, gilt lettering stamped on front cover (minor shelfwear, minor bumping to corners, very minor edgewear), still a very good, bright copy. An exceedingly rare dealer’s showroom album for the Paterson Six Model 6-46 touring sedan introduced by the Brass Era automobile company at the end of World War I. Paterson (1838-1921) founded the Paterson Co. carriage works in 1869, and was actually the carriage builder who launched William Durant’s famed career by constructing his first 1200 horse-drawn carts with spring suspension. Paterson later was a pioneer in the automobile industry, and was one of the earliest investors in Durant’s efforts to build General Motors, and by 1909 was manufacturing 2-cylinder automobiles with double chain drive and solid rubber tires. In 1910, the company introduced their first 4-cylinder horsepower, shaft driven motorcars, and eventually developed the Paterson Six, Model 6-46 which could reach 50 mph on developed highways. The Paterson Company maintained a widespread dealer network, including the Fashion Garage owned by Lawrence I. Sullivan (1887-1967) in Portland, OR, who rented and sold Paterson Six motorcars. This showroom album shows four Paterson Six touring cars lined up in front of Sullivan’s Garage, and another with four Portland women driving and riding in the popular a … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Harrison and Sons, 1920. 2 volumes. (12), 264; (4), 265-643, (1 blank) pp. Large 8vo (24.5 x 18.5 cm). With a frontispiece portrait of the author and 8 plates with reproductions of photographs. Original publisher's grey cloth; rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. First edition, second printing, of a history of the Arabian Gulf and its surrounding countries by the British army officer Samuel Barrett Miles (1838-1914), "a most significant contribution to the European knowledge of Oman" (New Arabian Studies). It starts with the ancient civilizations in the region, followed by chapters on the advent of Islam on the Gulf coast, the Portuguese era in eastern Arabia, and various dynasties, including the Yaareba and the Al-Bu Saeedi dynasty. Other chapters describe the commerce and economy of the Gulf, its pearl fishery, and the different tribes living there, with an entry on the Al-Kowasim, "a powerful Maadic tribe occupying the sea ports on the Pirate coast" (p. 430) and the Beni Yas and "their two towns Abu Thabi and Debaye" (p. 438). - Miles's first appointment in Arabia was as assistant resident at Aden in 1867 and he later became political agent and consul at Muscat, before being promoted to Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel" (preface). The book remains an authoritative source on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. We offer an original recruitment poster for the Jung Stahl Helm or Steel Helmets designed by Ludwig Hohlwein. It was produced between WWI and WWII, with institutions listing this with a 1920-1923 range. It is 33” x 23” backed with linen and housed in a fine black frame with the outside dimensions 38 ½” x 27 ½”. The text along the bottom reads “Herausgerber der Stahlhelm, Bund Der Frontsoldaten, Druck, Herm, Sonntag & Co., Munchen.” A young Steel Helmet cadet with a shadowy half smile looks out at the viewer, “KOMM MIT” the poster demands. The ominously striking composition is representative of Hohlwein’s groundbreaking style. Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) was a German poster artist, a pioneer of the Sachplakat style. Condition: There are two light dampstains in the left margin, otherwise very good.
