[Western Americana] [National Parks] [Blackfeet] Hileman, T.J.; Haynes, Frank J.; Jacobs, Frank, et al.
Various Places, 1920. Oblong folio, cloth over cardstock, 15 x 11 inches. Photographs and realphoto postcards, most measuring around 5 x 3 1/2 inches, mounted to pages. The system of national parks was created at first in a somewhat piecemeal fashion, with the Department of the Interior holding responsibility for establishing each park individually. Chief White Calf of the Blackfeet famously negotiated the sale of the bulk of the lands that would form Glacier National Park in 1895, with the agreement being that the US Government would allow for Blackfoot hunting (Chief White Calf's son, Chief Two Guns White Calf, would later travel to Washington in protest of the government's subsequent actions). The establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 coincided roughly with the dawn of American motor tourism. This album dates from that early period of National Park recreation, and bears evidence as to the recreation that happened around the early part of the century. The album shows scenery in three national parks by noted photographers, including some iconic photographs of Yellowstone by Frank J. Haynes first taken in the and several scarce images of Blackfoot attributed to the noted photographer T.J. Hileman, who was the official photographer of Glacier National Park during this period. The album begins with twenty-eight photographs by Haynes, who printed copies of his classic Yellowstone photographs, first taken in the 1890s, from his St. Paul, Minnesota studio. The next group shows twenty realphoto postcards of Mt. Rainier National Wilderness Area, taken by Frank J … [Click Below for Full Description]

Walter E. Schlinkert
Various railroads, 1920. Card. Very good. Although railroad passes could be purchased, most were given out to railroad executives, employees, family members and special guests. Generally they were partially printed on thick colored card stock paper with the name of the holder, the date of issue, and special instructions or limitations added by pen or typewriter. All but five of these passes were issued to Walter E. Schlinkert between the years 1902 and 1920. (The other five were issued to his widow between the years 1960-1972.) Schlinkert began his career as a "Scales Apprentice" working for The Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad Company in 1920. He received his last pass as a "Supervisor of Scales" for the Illinois Central Railroad Company in 1920. There are passes in this collection from about 35 different railroads and related companies like the Pullman Car Company, American Express Company, and Western Union Telegraph Company. They include passes from major lines like the Baltimore and Ohio, Pennsylvania, Southern, and St. Louis & San Francisco railroads as well as smaller roads like the Alabama Great Southern, Central Georgia, Chicago and Eastern Illinois, Indianapolis Southern, and Vandalia Railroad. There are three different passes issued by the United States Railroad Administration during World War One. Newspaper articles and Census records show Schlinkert was born in 1885 and began working for railroads around 1900. He retired from the Illinois Central Railroad in 1955 as its Superintendent of Scales, and died eight years later in 1963.

[Tbilisi]: Poligraficheskiy trest VSNHG, [1920s]. 96х65 cm. Chromolithography. Carefully restored. In a very good condition. Design by unknown artist. Text in Georgian. A remarkable example of the Georgian poster design. Extremely rare like most of Georgian posters of the 1920s. The graphic visualisation of the government loans in USSR. During the New Economic Policy the bonds were issued several times in the 1920s with the highest rate at 12%. On the poster the worker, hammering a sickle, instead of sparkles producing the bonds that go to schools (building in the centre), cities and countryside. On the opposite side of the poster, behind the border post, is the image of the West, the explanation reads 'The loans of the bourgeois countries are spent on the militarisation and suppression of the factory workers'. The conclusion at the bottom of the poster reads: 'We are fighting the attempts of the financial blockade'. In fact the blockade was already in place as the Soviet State was not allowed to take credits from the world banks. The poster was most likely created between 1924 and 1927 when such bonds were issued.

Flagg, James Montgomery
circa 1920s, [New York?]. Charcoal and pencil sketch (28 x 15 cm.), with subtle flesh pastel applied to Lincoln's face. Signed by Flagg to upper portion, along with brief annotation. Faint horizontal crease, with remnants of conservator's tape to verso. No subsequent states discovered. Best known for hisUncle Sam recruitment posters, Flagg was one of the most prolific of American magazine illustrators. In this unrealized editorial sketch, a posthumous Linocln is set-back-in-motion, descending the steps of his Memorial; presumably out of disgust with the Republican Party. Boldly-inscribed to the top of the sheet, Flagg writes: "Stan's idea, drawn roughly by me. Seems a swell conception;" potentially in reference to Flagg's colleague Penrhyn Stanlaws. [W.W.I. - RED CROSS NURSING.]
1920. Large cotton tablecloth, 810 x 895mm; embroidered with large central red cross, '1914 - 1919 Deptford' stitched around the cross in red and blue, and with over two hundred signatures neatly embroidered in red and blue, with the presentation 'signature' embroidered at out edge; some occasional light spotting and soiling, but otherwise beautifully preserved and cared for. A lovely W.W.I. souvenir. This large cotton table cloth has been lovingly embroidered with over two hundred signatures, celebrating those from the South East London community of Deptford who we presume either volunteered for, or were associated with, the Red Cross between 1914-1919. The central signatures are of the Mayor and Mayoress of Deptford at the time, 'W. A. Wayland', and 'Chas Wm Bowerman M.P.P.C.'. Charles William Bowerman (1851-1947) was a leading trade unionist and politician - the Labour MP for Deptford from 1906 to 1931, President of the TUC in 1901, and Secretary of the Parliamentary Committee from 1911-1921, when he became the organisation's first General Secretary. He became a privy councillor (a top political advisor, and hence the 'P.C.' after his name and 'M.P'.) in 1916. The tablecloth is 'signed' as it were 'A Wartime Souvenir, from Kate D. Warcup, June, 1920'. A search of the VAD register lists a Miss Ada Mary Warcup (1871-1957) from Deptford, and who worked for over 1600 hours with the VAD from 1916. Further searches reveal that Ada had a sister, Kate Parry (1867-1938). It seems most probably that the cloth was signed in pencil at a community event and then embroidered by Kate h … [Click Below for Full Description]

In the absence of event-specific information, this was likely produced as a salesman's sample, and would have likely been printed to order with specific event information to be supplied by the client, a theory supported by the encompassing, if not generic display of fair life - a tableaux including an early carnival ride, a Ferris wheel, minstrels, and a carousel. 42 x 54 in. chromolithograph on paper
