[Texas]. [Oil]
Fort Worth, 1920. About very good.. Large folding map, 34 x 22 inches. Two short separations along central vertical fold; short closed tear at center of right edge. Pinholes and minor wear at corners from contemporary mounting. Scattered contemporary pencil annotations. Light, even tanning. An unrecorded, highly detailed map of land ownership, oil wells, and industry development in East Texas just after World War I, published by the Standard Blueprint & Map Company located in Fort Worth. The map shows portions of Gregg, Rush, Smith, and Upshur Counties, encompassing towns such as Longview, Gladewater, Kilgore, Overton, and Henderson, with the Sabine River running through its center. Owners for every parcel of land within the scope of the map are printed, and oil wells, both producing and in development, are marked with blue and white circles. Several additional well locations are added in pencil. The chart is particularly valuable as it depicts the development of the oil industry in East Texas, north of the lucrative, early 20th-century discoveries near Beaumont and the Gulf, at a fairly early stage. Valuable discoveries and large-scale development in the area depicted by this map did not arrive the late 1920s and early 1930s (Texas State Historical Association). Contemporary advertisements for the publisher, Standard Blue Print Map and Engineering, promote the availability of over 200 oil maps of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas from the firm, but only a handful are recorded. We locate no copies of the present map in OCLC or available sales rec … [Click Below for Full Description]

[LABOR HISTORY] [STEEL WORKERS] VORSE, Mary Heaton
New York: Boni and Liveright, [1920]. First Edition. Paperback. Contemporary account of the American steel strike, organized by the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers in September, 1919, in the wake of the end of World War I in an effort to reorganize the industry, though the strike ended unsuccessfully in January, 1920. This a significant association copy of the former Republican governor of Michigan (1911-1913), who noted in pencil on p. 17, in response to the massive U.S. Steel Corporation's surplus at the end of 1919: "Thou must not tread on the sensitive toes of dollars; rather on the hearts of men," adding on the following page, "rather on the bleeding hearts of mankind." Previous to his political activities, Osborn travelled widely, discovering iron mines in both Canada and Madagascar; for this, one of his memoirs was titled "The Iron-Hunter." Mary Heaton Vorse was herself a radical novelist, journalist, and editor of "The Masses," and while her relationship with Osborn is unclear, we find reference to a few pieces of correspondence, dated between 1913 and 1920, in the Mary Heaton Vorse Papers at Wayne University. Wrapper issue. Octavo; publisher's white pictorial card wrappers; vi,[9]-185pp. Wrappers rather spotted, crude spine tape repair, textblock a bit toned, else Good to Very Good, internally sound. Inscribed and signed by the author in pencil on front free endpaper to former Governor of Michigan Chase S. Osborn with his ex libris inside upper cover and three extensive initialed pencil annotations to early leaves of text.

YAHYA KEMAL [BEYATLI], (Turkish poet), (1884-1958).
Autograph Manuscript Collected Poems., [ca. 1915-1925], 1920. Original full leather bdg. with decorative embossing. All edges gilt. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 12,5 cm). In Ottoman Turkish. 47 poems of Yahya Kemal in 120 pages. Different pen and pencils and inks. No general title, under the title of 'Ithaf' [i.e. Dedication] poem of him, a signature as "Y. K." with a script. Yahya Kemal Beyatli, born Ahmet Âgâh, was a leading Turkish poet and author, as well as a politician and diplomat. Yahya Kemal was born Ahmet Âgâh on December 2, 1884 in Skopje, then in the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. He wrote under pen names such as Agâh Kemal, Esrar, Mehmet Agâh, and Süleyman Sadi. He came from a prominent family, whose roots could be traced back to the Ottoman court, and he was educated at various private schools. As he was about to start his higher education, severe disagreements between his parents kept him away from school for some time. When he tried to return to school, he was turned away because it was too late into the semester. His absence from school coincided with the oppressive regime of Abdülhamit II (reigned 1876?1909), and Yahya Kemal got involved various anti-regime movements. To avoid getting arrested, he went to Paris in 1903. During his time abroad, he met other exiled Turkish intellectuals, politicians and writers. He traveled extensively in Europe, and was exposed to various cultures. He developed a fondness for literature and was influenced by the French romantic movement. He eventually decided that he wanted to write poetry, and he first studied the historical work … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mel'nik, Tat'iana Evgen'evna (Botkina, 1899-1986)
1920. Harbin: self-published, 1920. First Edition. Octavo (22.5 × 15 cm). Original printed wrappers; 98, [1] pp. Very good. First edition of this early memoir of the Tsar and his relatives, by the daughter of their physician, Evgenii Sergeevich Botkin (1865-1918), who was murdered along with the Imperial Family in Ekaterinburg. Mel'nik claims to follow no political aims, but wishes to correct the slanderous accounts of the Imperial Family common among many émigrés. This copy likely from the collection of Petr Sergeevich Botkin (18??-1933), son of the physician of Tsar Alexander II and brother of the physician of Nicholas II, and the author's uncle. Botkin served as secretary of the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC, emissary to Portugal and Marocco. With the handwritten note "P. Botkinu" on the front wrapper, suggesting the book belonged to or was intended for Petr Botkin, perhaps in memory of his brother. A second edition was published in Belgrade in 1921; the first edition is very scarce. Savine 02202.

Fitzgerald, F. Scott
1920. Rare Gordon Bryant iconic portrait of American literary master F. Scott Fitzgerald, warmly signed by him, "Faithfully yours F. Scott Fitzgerald." This portrait was part of a study of Fitzgerald by Bryant which he later published in Shadowland Magazine in 1921. In fine condition. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15.25 inches by 13.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, American novelist Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald published four novels and four collections of short stories during his lifetime including: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night, and his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. A member of the Lost Generation of the 1920s, Fitzgerald's novels depicted the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age and, though he achieved popular success, fame, and fortune in his lifetime, he received little critical acclaim until after his death. PERSHING, JOHN J.
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1920. FIRST EDITION. An outstanding presentation copy inscribed by Pershing: "To M. le Maréchal Joffre with sincere esteem and affectionate regards, and with gratitude for his friendship and wise counsel. John J. Pershing Washington D.C."Pershing, who led the American forces in World War I, presented this book to his counterpart in the French military. Joseph Joffre was commander-in-chief of the French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is most famous for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive Battle of the Marne in September 1914. In late 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France and moved to an advisory role.In April 1917 Joffre led the French mission to the United States to secure America's entry into the war. He recommended that the Americans lead their own force in the conflict, as Pershing insisted, rather than being integrated into the existing commands. On the final day of the mission he met with Pershing, just named commander of the American Expeditionary Force, telling him that Pershing "can always count on me for anything in my power." Joffre became head of the Supreme War Council in 1918, coordinating the Allied war effort from Versailles. This is Pershing's Final Report to Secretary of War Newton Baker, presenting his summary account of the events of the Great War. The work is lavishly illustrated with graphics and maps describing military action and maneuvers, organizational structures, and orders of battle. This classic w … [Click Below for Full Description]

F SCOTT FITZGERALD
New York: Scribners, 1920. ALL THE SAD YOUNG MENFIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY F. SCOTT FITZGERALDTO ANNE OBER (Wife of Fitzgerald's literary agent)Harold Ober was F. Scott Fitzgerald's for most of Fitzgerald's literary career. Ober often lent Fitzgerald in advance of payment for the many short stories Fitzgerald wrote and published to pay for his and Zelda's generally exceptional, sometimes exotic, often expensive lifestyle.Harold Ober's signature appears on the front pastedown of this book. It's difficult to think of a better association copy, other, perhaps, than ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN inscribed to Ring Lardner, to wom the book is dedicated. Fitzgerald's relationship with Harold Ober and his family spanned from approximately 1920 and up until Fitzgerald's death in 1940. Sometimes the relationship was tempestuous. Most often it was friendly, caring, and endearing -- Ober an adopted relatively doing the best he could to keep Fitzgerald on track to make the best of his literary career. At one time, Scottie Fitzgerald, daughter of F. Scott and Zelda, resided with the Obers while F. Scott tended to the mental health needs of Zelda. This book has a superb provenance: sold to Kenneth Rendell in 2001 by descendants of Harold Ober; sold to William Reese in 2004; afterwards, purchased by us at Mt. Gothic Tomes and Colorado Artifactual in 2019.The original dust jacket is supplied and was most likely discarded several decades ago.Book is very good to very good plus condition; front and back cloth covers being in very good plus to near fine condition. In 1914, Shackleton and a 28-man crew had set out on the Endurance in the hope to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent - an 1800 miles journey, sea to sea. However, in January 1915, due to exceptionally cold and icy conditions, the Endurance was trapped in ice. Ten months later, the pressure of the ice crushed the ship which sank, leaving Shackleton stranded some 1,600 km from any human activity. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts, Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (ODNB). Amazingly, … [Click Below for Full Description]
