Massachusetts and Connecticut: [circa early 1920s]. Near Fine. Hardcover. Two volumes. Large oblong quartos. Measuring 12" x 9.5". String-tied black cloth over paper boards. The two volumes contains 325 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 4" and 3.5" x 5.75", some with captions on the verso. Very good photo album with some tears with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a New England family during the first half of the 1920s. From the few captions it appears that many of the photos were taken in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The majority of the photos are taken on the seaside during a number of summers. These photos show the family in bathing costumes of the era playing on the beach and swimming. One photo shows two women lounging in the sand with a parasol. Most of the photos are candid snapshots and catch family and friends in the midst of conversation and games, such as an action shot of a game of leap frog. The New England coast is captured in lovely amateur snaps of seaside towns and crowds of people on the beaches, including West Haven Beach in Connecticut. Along with the vacation photos there are numerous shots of neighborhoods and family homes in different seasons. Some show a group of men working on the road in May with large swathes of the street torn up so that a track can be laid down, possibly for a trolley or streetcar. Another selection of photos show houses in winter covered in snow with views of barren trees lining the streets. There are also photos of a city taken looking down on the buildings from one … [Click Below for Full Description]

COOPER, Charles (Clyde Fisher, and Others
New York: [circa 1920s]. Very Good. Charles Cooper's original leather portfolio (15" x 21") with his name and studio address (576 Fifth Avenue, at 47th Street) stamped in gold on the front, containing 30 large format individual and group portrait photographs. Most are gelatin silver prints measuring between 10" x 13" and 11" x 14", including a few mounted circular prints measuring about 11" across. Ten are mounted on Cooper's thick studio mats, Signed in pencil or with his name embossed on the mat. The other 20 loose prints are unidentified. All appear to have been taken sometime in the mid-1920s. Several accomplished individual and family portraits by this little-known New York City photographer, whose images appear strongly influenced by Julia Margaret Cameron, including one image of two girls. Other compelling images include three prints of various members of the same large family taken outside in a park, all strikingly similar in style to August Sander's portraits from the same period. Only two of the prints are identified with a small typed paper slip laid down on the mat: a portrait of Clyde Fisher, the father of astronomy in America and curator of the Hayden Planetarium; and a portrait of New York lawyer Crescens Hubbard and his family. The studio mounts and blank versos are soiled, else all 30 prints are near fine overall, the images are clean and bright, in a good portfolio rubbed and scuffed at the edges. A detailed list is available: Three portraits of a large family (not mounted) 1. Landscape Family Portrait (14" x 11"): Matriarch, two boys, seven young girls, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

England: [Circa 1920]. Near Fine. Hardcover. Oblong quarto. Measuring 13" x 10". String-tied black pebbled leather over paper boards. Contains 62 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 4" x 6" and 8" x 10", without captions. Near fine photo album with near fine photographs. A collection of amateur photography taken of the English countryside with the people in what appears to be clothing from the 1920s and visible billboard that places them in the East Sussex area of the country. The photographer used soft focus and matte paper reminiscent of the style of early 20th Century photographers such as Edward Steichen and Dorthea Lange. The photos concentrate on the landscape of the British country, with photos of old homes covered in ivy, romantic walkways, and stone bridges. The coast and small waterways are seen here as well as photos of creeks making their way through rock faces, and waves crashing on a rocky beach. A few of the images have human subjects, some posed, such as one of a girl in a bathing costume and swim cap on a rock, while others are candids of people working on a dock or walking down a road. The stonework of old churches is captured here as well as farm animals roaming in fields. A pleasing and artistic collection of images showing the natural beauty of the British country and the skills of an amateur photographer.

Yellowstone, Wyoming and Colorado: 1920s. Near Fine. Hardcover. Oblong quarto. Measuring 11" x 8". String-tied black leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 236 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 3" and 3" x 5" affixed to stiff black paper, with captions. A photo album kept by a woman on her trip with friends to Wyoming in the 1920s, with an emphasis on Yellowstone National Park and its surrounding attractions. The company, mostly comprised of women, went through the park photographing the numerous geysers including Old Faithful, Castle Geyser, and Grotto Geyser as well as the hot springs throughout the reserve. They hiked "Uncle Tom's Trail" and took photos of the canyon and the falls. One photo captioned, "a popular sport in the park" shows a tourist feeding a bear, while another shows "ones of the guides" dressed in leopard print chaps and a cowboy hat. After Yellowstone the group took a train to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. These photos include the Continental Divide, Seven Falls, and silver mines. There are photos of automobiles and "automobile highways" throughout the West. One group of photos is from a hike up Long's Peak with images of the boulder fields. Two photos show a family of Native Americans in full traditional dress captioned, "Indians in the Garden of the Gods." Towards the end of the album two sections are captioned "scenes of the flood Pueblo, Colorado" and "scenes from the train." The album ends with some commercial images of Niagara Falls. BORN, Max
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1920. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (206 x 139 mm), [6], 81 [1] pp. Including 36 illustrations in text. Contemporar half cloth, gilt-lettered spine (extremities rubbed, corners bumped). Text littled browned, title-page browned a bit stronger at outer margins, occasional minor spotting. Provenance: Lise Meitner (her signature in pencil on title page). ---- FIRST EDITION in book form of Max Born's study of the structure of matter. In his introduction, Born writes: The three essays that make up the contents of this little book have appeared in the journal Naturwissenschaften during the last year. They treat the same object, physical atomism, from different points of view; the first gives a general overview of modern atomic theory, while the others give priority to questions which I have tried to solve myself. The similarity of the subjects implies that some repetitions occur. A fusion of the three essays into a summarized presentation seemed to me impossible, and not necessary, because the recently published book by A. Sommerfeld, Atombau und Spektrallinien (Braunschweig, Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn, 1919) shows the progress of the physical Atomic doctrine with great completeness and demonstrating in attractive, easy-to-handle form. The reprint of my essays should be of use to those who have no time to study the larger work of Sommerfeld. Born played an important role in the development of quantum mechanics. In 1926, together with Heisenberg and Jordan, he published the famous "three-man paper" Zur Quantenmechanik II which formed the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hyannis, Massachusetts: [circa 1920s]. Near Fine. Softcover. Oblong octavo. Measuring 7.75" x 5.75". Ribbon-tied leather over paper boards with "Snapshots" stamped in silver on the front board. A collection of 146 sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2.5" to 3.25" x 4", with very few captions. The album is very good with rubbing and some creasing, the photographs are near fine. A photo album of 1920s snapshot photographs from New England, including Hyannis, Massachusetts. The album depicts the activities, mostly of young women in their late teens to early 20s, in Hyannis Massachusetts in the 1920s. These include swimming, camping (with what looks like a group such as the Girl Scouts or The Camp Fire Girls), and multiple events that apparently required parading around in costumes including in Native American dress. Additionally amateur performances are captured here with girls in costume acting in the woods. There are also a few photographs of the women with men in military uniforms, one shows a young man in camp playing a bugle. Towards the end of the album some of the women are posing with a man dressed in a Hyannis baseball uniform. An interesting assemblage depicting the activities of a group of young New England women in the twenties.

SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1920. Condition: Like New. A PERFECT STATE. AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE. A COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. YEAR EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. YEAR UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Beautiful copy of this shirt in the collection "Modes and manners of today ' hui", the publication of the best of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, by artists the having made, at the top of their art. The project is supported by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. In order to support the revolution art and clothing of the roaring twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations of Georges Lepape. Before the reception to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose a similar shirt, with authors and various artists. In 1920, it is Robert Bonfils and Gérard of Paris that will provide Pierre Corrard elements to achieve the annual shirt. This shirt is like all the others in the series: under a cardboard fort, which the first dish is hit only titles and years, with, in its centre, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper that one illustrating against guard, and including the pattern was designed by the artist realizing the inner boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page containing the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, illustrated boards. A special care is given to the realization of these boards, from engraving to the passage of the stencils. The origin of our copy is exceptional: it comes directly from the Corrard fam … [Click Below for Full Description]

DICKENS, Charles
[London?], 1920. Thirteen proof sheets, each measuring just shy of 9" x 12". Each leaf contains the elaborate engraved cover illustration for a notable Dickens title. Nearly all of them are on greenish stock, while "Sketches by Boz" is on a cream stock. most show varying degrees of dust soiling at the extremities, and some minor chips and closed tears, but the illustrations and immediate area surroungding them are clean and bright. A real curiosity - the item was acquired with no background provided, and we cannot locate much information about any notable issue of these proof sheets. Perhaps they were issued as part of a large set of Dickens' works, or they could have been snatched by a former employee of Chapman and Hall? Regardless, the red cloth portfolio that houses them was produced no later than the 1920s or so, and bears some old soiling and staining to prove it. There is a modest applied paper label that simply reads " Charles Dickens Complete Set of 13 Proof Wrappers." Internally, laid in with the proofs is an engraving by Cruikshank of what looks to be a portrait of Dickens. A real curiosity that raises more questions than it answers. Regardless, certainly a set of 19th-century "avant la lettre" proofs of Dickens covers, which evoke the most attractive issues of his published works. Very good.
