Albert Einstein
New York: Holt. Very good copy of the first 1920 US edition by Einstein. RELATIVITY The Special and General Theory by Dr. Albert Einstein Published by Henry Holt, New York in 1920 First American Edition (and the first non-technical work written by Albert Einstein about his Theory of General and Special Relativity in English) AN IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT BOOK , and Albert Einstein's most important book. Overall a very good copy in the first edition of a very important book, with title page dated 1920 and published in New York by Henry Holt and Company, and with the frontis portrait of Einstein. The book is in its original blue cloth with a bit of soiling to boards, as shown in my photos, and with two faint white soil areas to rear board (that could be removed by a conservator). Front cover imprinting in dulled gold, spine imprinting in dulled green as is usually found with this rare book. The front upper right corner of the front cover is a bit bumped and what looks like a damp stain from long ago. This bumping extends to about the first 33 pages or so, but not objectionable, but noted here. The blue cloth spine ends have been pushed in over the many decades with two horizontal splits in the cloth as shown in my photos, but no loss of the blue cloth. There is no real shelving wear to the corners of the boards, which is uncommon. This book is square and sound without cocking or slant to the volume. The interior hinges are sound, the end papers clean (a small circular book-sellers label affixed to the inner corner of the rear fixed end paper). End papers with very light foxing … [Click Below for Full Description]

FORSTER, E.M.
London Labour Research Department, 1920. Only edition; 8vo; publisher's stapled wrappers with printed title label mounted to upper wrapper. A refreshingly good example of a book once thought to be a true rarity. In truth copies do surface on occasion, however, seldom thus in collector's condition. The pamphlet outlines the historical, social and political relationship between Egypt and the UK, in small part based derived from the time Forster spent as a volunteer in Alexandria with the Red Cross between November 1915 and January 1919. 1920. Condition: Like New. A PERFECT STATE. AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE. A COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. YEAR EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. YEAR UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Beautiful copy of this shirt in the collection "Modes and manners of today ' hui", the publication of the best of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, by artists the having made, at the top of their art. The project is supported by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. In order to support the revolution art and clothing of the roaring twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations of Georges Lepape. Before the reception to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose a similar shirt, with authors and various artists. In 1920, it is Robert Bonfils and Gérard of Paris that will provide Pierre Corrard elements to achieve the annual shirt. This shirt is like all the others in the series: under a cardboard fort, which the first dish is hit only titles and years, with, in its centre, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper that one illustrating against guard, and including the pattern was designed by the artist realizing the inner boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page containing the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, illustrated boards. A special care is given to the realization of these boards, from engraving to the passage of the stencils. The origin of our copy is exceptional: it comes directly from the Corrard family. Ramón Sopena (1867-1932) was a Spanish editor who founded the publishing house that bears his name in 1894 in Barcelona. He was a multifaceted editor that published essentially dictionaries and encyclopedias, but also, journals. For some time he also edited erotic works, and then opted for popular literature. In the children's genre, he published small works in series such as the ones we offer here: the CHILDREN COLLECTION or the LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN. The printing house had a long life, since it closed only in 2004. The purpose of the CHILDREN'S COLLECTION (ÂÂ"Episodios historicosÂÂ") ("Historical episodes"), was to make relevant topics of SpainÂÂ's history available to children. ÂÂ"Vida de hombres celebresÂÂ", ("Life of famous men"), are brief biographies of characters from Spanish and universal history. It can hardly be disputed that the theories put forth in this book are among the most important in the history of modern science. [Oklahoma]
[Oklahoma City?]: Southwestern Bell Telephone Co, 1920. Very good.. [36]pp. Original printed card covers, stapled. Light wear and soiling, especially to lower corner. Small tape reinforcement to rear lower corner. Some minor foxing to contents. An early telephone directory for the little Oklahoma town of McAlester -- the largest town inside the Choctaw Nation -- published little more than a decade after Oklahoma statehood. The directory provides a single alphabetical listing of residences and businesses, noting address as well as phone number. Residences are denoted as such, and interestingly numbers outside of town are also indicated as "rural," with addresses such as "NW of city." With numerous advertisements for local businesses, including an ad for a local company bottling spring water (delightfully described as "absolutely sanitary"). We locate two serial records in OCLC, at the Mid-Continent Public Library in Missouri and at Stillwater Public Library in Kansas -- neither has any directories from before the 1950s. Rare.

Daytona Beach, Florida: R. H. LeSesne, c. 1920. LeSesne, R. H. 13 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches Haberle-tone (Orotone) in original gesso-decorated gilded frame. Original sealing paper backing, chip and torn, with the photographer's label "Haberle-tones / Are photographs made on glass instead of paper, which gives them a brilliancy and depth that cannot be obtained in the ordinary photograph. Haberle-tones are made only by R. H. LeSESNE, Daytona, Florida" affixed at the bottom edge. A few slight blemishes to the frame surface; otherwise, a very good example. (partial frame showing). Richard Habersham LeSesne, 1880 - 1948, was born in Clarkesville, Habersham County, Georgia and settled in Daytona, Florida by 1908,when he purchased the photographic studio of Henry Kaiser; he died there in 1946. His reputation as a photographer is primarily tied to the Daytona Beach Speedway where he documented the land speed record attempts from the 1920s through the 1930s. However, as Daytona Beach gained as a winter destination for those further north wanting warmer climes, he seemed to have established a market for his local landscapes, using the Orotone, or as he named them, Halberle-tones, the process made famous by Edward S. Curtis. In keeping with the similarity of appearance, LeSesne used the same "bat-wing" frames that Curtis popularized.

Dixon, Maynard
[San Francisco]: [1912-1920]. 74 leaves [46 cm x 39 cm] of handmade paper. The majority of the leaves have three uniform holes at the left. Item #2886 The portfolio contains 75 entries (28 are duplicates), as well as the title page, on handmade paper. All entries are in Dixon's distinctive hand, and include the title, size, date, and sometimes the location and disposition of the work. The cover is titled Paintings by Maynard Dixon, along with his distinctive Thunderbird symbol outlined in a circle. The entries were accompanied by original photographs done by noted San Francisco photographer Gabriel Moulin. Most of the Moulin photographs have been removed but five still remain. These photographs [24 cm x 17 cm] contain either Edith Hamlin's stamp or Gabriel Moulin's (and in many cases some pencil annotations, probably by Hamlin). The photographed paintings are: 'The Trading Post' - 'Corral Dust' - 'Camp in the Mountains' - 'Home Pastures' - 'The Old Cow Town'. Among the numerous entries are murals for Anita Baldwin's Indian Room and Jinks Room for her Arcadia home, The Old Trading Post, Corral Dust, Home Pastures, Pony Boy, Blackfeet Historians, Camp in the Mountains, The Navajos, The Story Tellers, From Range to Range, What an Indian Thinks, Cattle Country, Home of the Half-Breed, among others. A number of works are from his legendary 1917 trip to Montana. Dixon probably intended the portfolio as a document he could show prospective clients and for museum and gallery exhibitions. Although most of the photographs have been removed by Dixon or his third wife, Edith Hamlin, th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edith Wharton
Wharton, Edith - The Age of Innocence - Appleton & Company: New York, 1920 - First Edition / First Printing - "(1)" present on the last page of text as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. This copy has all of the textual points other sellers mention but those are not in fact real points as they are present in the second printings as well. The book is heavily worn. There is rubbing, fraying, chipping, tanning, spotting, soiling, parts of the spine are missing and the spine is split and holding on for dear life. Internally the copy is rather clean although there are creases to the corners of some of the pages and there is some of the to-be-expected tanning. The binding is still square, and while it is loose, it is still holding on. If ever there was a candidate for leather binding or to be re-cased, this is it. This copy is a true first printing with the "(1)" on the last page and the textual points (which aren't really points) all present and as such is scarce. Easily one of the hardest of the early Pulitzer Prize winners to obtain. Awarded the Columbia University Prize. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize, making Edith Wharton the first woman to receive that illustrious distinction. Basis for the silent 1924 film of the same title, also the basis for the 1934 talking film of the same title. And finally, basis for the superb 1993 adaptation which starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Ryder. This final adaptation was nominated for five academy awards and would win for Best Costume Design. All books are offered with a full 30 day posta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harold Wilson; Adam Smith; Ricardo; Maitland; J B Priestley; Edmund Buke; Jonathan Swift; Oliver Goldsmith; Hugh Dalton; G D H cole;
Oxford, Cambridge etc, London, Oxford, Cambridge etc, 1920. Seventy five books, many annotated and with ownership inscriptions, from Harold Wilson's Oxford days and his time at grammar school in Huddersfield and the Wirral, including the prizes awarded for securing the life-changing Gladstone Prize at Oxford. All of these books stayed with Wilson until he died in 1995 and were only sold by Wilson's family earlier this year following the death of his widow Mary Wilson after being removed from the Westminster flat that the couple shared for decades. Harold Wilson's college prize copy of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (with notes laid in) is here alongside Ricardo, Maitland on the Constitution (annotated), the Coles on the Condition of Britain, the Webbs on Trade Unionism, J B Priestley's English Journey, Edmund Burke's speeches and a selection from Swift - both with Wilsonian annotation. Many of the major economic works of the 1920s and 30s are present among the Gladstone Prize volumes including Angell on The Story of Money, Pigou on the Economics of Welfare and Von Haberler on Prosperity and Depression. From his schooldays Wilson clearly held in affectionate regard Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer which survives in a battered copy with significant annotation that suggests Wilson may have starred in the role of the character Tony, probably in the sixth form at Wirral Grammar School or during his years at Royds Hall Grammar School in Huddersfield before his father's redundancy forced the family to move from Yorkshire to the north west. Taken together these books are revealing … [Click Below for Full Description]
