BLACK AMERICANA)
Seattle.: Fisher Flour., No date. Ca. 1920. Seattle.: Fisher Flour.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Illustrated booklet 5.5 x 3.25 inches; 8 pp (including covers) that tells the story of the African-American child who, in adulthood, became the visual personification of a Seattle, Washington firm, Fisher's "Blend Flour." Some lettering on front cover abraded; contents in very good condition. One copy located at the John W. Hartman Center at Duke University. The story, told in verse and illustrated with cartoon images, relates how "a little Pickinny" began a life of wandering. "I's a skinny little nigger, But I showily likes to roam, So Uh'll start right now to figure How to git away from home." He hops a freight and takes in city after city, eventually winding up in Seattle--no longer skinny and over 6 foot tall. He is found sweeping out a store by the Fisher Brothers "who owned the big flour mill that grinds for countless others"; they turn him into the company icon--a massive figure who "simply rolls in fat." His story concludes as follows: "His name is now 'BLEND FLOUR' as the Fishers have arranged; So here's good luck and power to the coon BLEND FLOUR changed." The Fishers transitioned from flour to radio station ownership in the 1920s; they are today Fisher Communications with headquarters in Seattle. "A Wandering Story" is an uncommon ephemeral item utilizing the exploitive negative racial stereotypes frequently found in American advertising of the early 20th century. .

Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1920. A fair copy of a scarce work, with 10 (of 12) tipped in colour plates by Detmold. Undated but 1920's. In the original cream decorative cloth binding with gilt illustration and titles to spine and front board. This copy has been rebacked, so the binding is sound and tight. With new endpapers. The binding has some marking to the front and back boards, dulling to the spine and some wear and bumping to corners. The contents are clean and bright with just the odd mark or spot. Plates at p104 and 224 are absent. Some of the tissue guards have creasing or marking. The plate opposite page 80 has had a little creasing at the corner. The plates opposite p 8 and 160 have some grubbiness/wear to the outer edges of the backing paper but the plates themselves are fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SCHIFF [1908-1968]: Schiff was an Austrian-Jewish artist. He was a keen observer of the Chinese spirit, showing the more fascinating visual insights to Shanghai life. . Schiff arrived from Austria in Shanghai in 1930 when he was 22 years old, and lived there until 1947. His charming cartoons captured the foreign community's interest and many were also published in local newspapers and journals such as the China Journal & the North China Daily News. . He also illustrated several books on China, a suite of Shanghai postcards, and was attributed to decorating the walls of the Cercle Sportif Français and other clubs. . After receiving an invitation to visit Shanghai from a cousin Schiff lived there for 17 years, becoming known as one of the city's great cartoonists between the two world wars. . Schiff's importance lies, first of all in the fact he depicted indelible characters that manifest what it meant to dwell in Shanghai, then an international City. . "He manipulates his works as a form of attack. Socially marginalized groups, such as prostitutes, 'taxi-girls' and beggars, are all subjects of his scrutiny." . *** Gerd Kaminski, autho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harcourt, Brace published this first trade edition in 52-page format. "Strunk and White [E. B. White (Charlotte's Web), one of Strunk's first students and greatest admirers, who, in 1957, updated and revised the "Little Book," adding an introduction and a chapter on style] waded through the totality of our vast and complicated language and boiled it down to a terse 105 pages, including a glossary and index. No exhaustive explanations or sentence diagrams here--just 22 style rules and principles of composition, followed by 'a few matters of form,' a conclusive list of misused words and phrases and an all-encompassing 'guide to style.'" . . . The Elements of Style is a timeless reminder of the simplicity of proper writing and is likely to remain a useful tool for years to come." (Time 100) N. B. Wagner, Richard. Translated by Margaret Armour.
William Heinemann, London 1920 - 160 pp, 10" H. Taupe-coloured cloth with black lettering/decoration on spine and front board, black publisher's emblem on rear board. Pictorial endpapers, b&w vignettes, 34 colour plates, tipped in on heavy stock with borders, tissue covers bearing captions (collated). This book contains the first two parts of 'The Ring of the Niblung': 'The Rhinegold: Prelude' and 'The Valkyrie: First Day of the Trilogy'. 'Siegfried: Second Day of the Trilogy' and 'The Twilight of the Gods: Third Day of theTrilogy' are not included. This English translation of Richard Wagner's epic opera is enhanced by Arthur Rackham's beautiful, detailed illustrations, which bring to life the gods, goddesses, giants, dwarves and other inhabitants of the drama. The plates are all clean and bright, although one has four tiny flecks of skim from the facing tissue at the top (probably as a result of the tipping-in process), one has a very small crease at the bottom left-hand corner and another has a very tiny piece of edge wear. The card stock has darkened, as seems common with this production, affecting the adjacent pages (see photograph). Some pages have light wrinkling (no creases) - mainly at corners. Moderate browning to edges of text block. Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Two margin tears (not affecting text or illustrations) have been repaired with archival tape. Dust jacket has very small chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, browning and some very light scuffs on spine, some light browning on panels, three water stains on spine - the largest and darkest at th … [Click Below for Full Description]
