Jack London
Macmillan. HEARTS OF THREE Jack London sept 1920 1st ed first edition novel macmillan rare! book usa hardcover, red s cloth. front cover is blank. Set up and electrotyped. Published September 1920. has edgewear, cornerwear, rubbed. has a few cover stains, name inside first blank. clean text. gilt gold embossed lettering on spine. two gilt rules, top and bottom. top page end edge plain. all edges are cut. 373 pages. no ads. SEE ALL PICS. only 4,990 copies printed. SCARCE! Published four years after London's death (and two years after it was published in England). Like his two late books about dogs, this was hackwork necessary to raise cash, which he wrote in Hawaii during his final year. The last long novel of his life, HEARTS OF THREE, was a sorry business, a piece of romantic trash that bore no mark of Jack's style at all. It was the first time he had been asked to "novelize" a screenplay. In fact, HEARTS OF THREE was a serial adventure story of fifteen episodes, written by the screenwriter of "The Perils of Pauline" and "The Exploits of Elaine." To ask an author of Jack's quality to flesh it out was an insult and an indignity. He wrote it because the Hearst Sunday supplements bribed him with $25,000 over and above his regular contract with Cosmopolitan. He thought the book would have a large sale; it was so badly done that in fact it failed. [Sinclair] "Romantic trash" or not, it is a Jack London title, and a none-too-common one at that. Bonfils Robert, Houville Gerard d'
SARL ABRAXAS-LIBRIS, 1920. A PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE. ONE COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Magnificent copy of this shirt from the collection "Modes et Manners of Today", the publication of the best of fashion from the beginning of the XXth century, by the artists who made it, at the height of their art. The project is led by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. To accompany the artistic and clothing Révolution of the Roaring Twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations by Georges Lepape. In front of the reception given to this first publication, he decides, each year, to offer an identical shirt, with different authors and artists. In 1920, it was Robert Bonfils and Gérard d'Houville who supplied Pierre Corrard with the elements to make the annual shirt. This shirt looks like all the others in the series: under strong cardboard, the first flat of which is stamped with only titles and years, with, in its center, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper as that illustrating the counterguard, and whose motif was drawn by the artist making the interior boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page with the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, the illustrated plates. Particular care is taken in the production of these plates, from the engraving to the passage of the stencils. The provenance of our copy is exceptional: it comes directly from the Corrard … [Click Below for Full Description]

Here in his own hand, Edison gives detailed instructions on maintaining the quality of and the vault storage routines for the moulds used to "press" or make records. The note from his West Orange, New Jersey laboratory is accompanied by an undated photograph of Edison at the laboratory bench. The typed portion of the note reads, in part: "One man and assistant are to keep track of all moulds on the press and know just how many records are required... All these moulds are to be rejected except four of the moulds which have made the least number of prints, and not exceeding 250." It adds that the moulds are to be kept in the "Vault or stock room" and that daily pressing reports are to be made and "...sent to Altengarten and...Hauck." In his own hand, Edison appended and signed further instructions, stressing the need for perfection in doing this work. He writes, in full: "2 Men [these two words circled] Hauck's men-but he should not give them more wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

LABOR HISTORY] [STEEL WORKERS] VORSE, Mary Heaton
Boni and Liveright [1920], New York. Contemporary account of the American steel strike, organized by the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers in September, 1919, in the wake of the end of World War I in an effort to reorganize the industry, though the strike ended unsuccessfully in January, 1920. This a significant association copy of the former Republican governor of Michigan (1911-1913), who noted in pencil on p. 17, in response to the massive U.S. Steel Corporation's surplus at the end of 1919: "Thou must not tread on the sensitive toes of dollars; rather on the hearts of men," adding on the following page, "rather on the bleeding hearts of mankind." Previous to his political activities, Osborn travelled widely, discovering iron mines in both Canada and Madagascar; for this, one of his memoirs was titled "The Iron-Hunter." Mary Heaton Vorse was herself a radical novelist, journalist, and editor of "The Masses," and while her relationship with Osborn is unclear, we find reference to a few pieces of correspondence, dated between 1913 and 1920, in the Mary Heaton Vorse Papers at Wayne University. Wrapper issue. Octavo; publisher's white pictorial card wrappers; vi,[9]-185pp. Wrappers rather spotted, crude spine tape repair, textblock a bit toned, else Good to Very Good, internally sound. Inscribed and signed by the author in pencil on front free endpaper to former Governor of Michigan Chase S. Osborn with his ex libris inside upper cover and three extensive initialed pencil annotations to early leaves of text. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

CONRAD, Joseph.
London: Methuen, 1920. Octavo. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine. A very good copy indeed with minor wear to the spine ends and some cracking to the front hinge. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Catherine Willard from her friend Joseph Conrad 1st Jan 1921". Catherine Willard (1898-1954) was a noted screen actress and leading lady. She met Conrad in about 1920 through her mother, Grace, who was an interior designer and helping the Conrads furnish their new home, Oswalds, in Bishopsbourne, Kent. Catherine was establishing herself as an actress and was about the same age as the Conrad's son, Borys. The latter suspected his parents of attempting to line her up as future daughter in law. Conrad was writing his dramatic adaptation of The Secret Agent at the time and had Willard in mind for the heroine. He sent the finished manuscript of the play to her, shortly before his death in 1924 and it is probable that he gave her this copy to familiarise herself with the novel, in the hope should take the part, whilst he finished the play. The Secret Agent has long been regarded as one of Conrad's finest and most enduring novels and a key influence on both Graham Greene and Eric Ambler. It is notably rare in a presentation state, even as a reprint - this is the tenth edition, the first edition having been published in 1907. "The Secret Agent depicts the atmosphere of Edwardian London in a psychological thriller of the anarchist underworld. Conrad's wit and chivalrous magnanimity are at their airiest in this novel" (Connolly). [Attribu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[America, c.1920s]. Mammoth Photograph. Approx. 25 x 30 inches. Sepia tone. Very good. Poignant, an unusual, extremely large-format or "mammoth" studio photograph of an American bridal party. We've never seen a wedding photo so large. Even the wedding party is immense. In this oversized studio photograph-over 5 square feet-we see the bride and groom; the best man and two groomsmen; a maid of honor and sixteen bridesmaid's; a boy ring bearer; and five flower girls. That's 28 people! A wonderful photograph for its unexpected, striking effect.

Brief wear to head and tail of spine and corners; very good. C. 1920s Second Polish Republic photograph album prepared by the Workers' Society of Friends of Children in Warsaw. Arciszewski served as founding chairman of The Workers' Society of Friends of Children [Robotnicze Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Dzieci (RTPD)] and along with Landy, was an active member of the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). Arciszewski served in the Socialist party and became the 31st Prime Minister of Poland. Notably, the album's first photograph depicts a crowd of children in front of a "Children's Home" in Warsaw; among the crowd is politician and co-founder of the PPS, Senator Bolesław Limanowski (1835-1935).
