DREISER, Theodore
Los Angeles: (1920). Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler for a position as dramatic critic there even though Dreiser is "very much aware that in so far as THE EVENING POST is concerned any recommendation I may choose to offer in behalf of another may prove more of a hindrance than an aid." Dreiser goes on to state that Sayler "is one of a very few in America or elsewhere who correctly interpret the modern theatre with all its delicate threads of experiment and theory." He says that he follows Sayler's recommendations "with a security which has not been misplaced. Also as an experimenter myself in the possibilities of the stage I have found him unusually understanding and symp … [Click Below for Full Description]

(NATURAL HISTORY). DUMOULIN.
[Belgium, Herstal, prov. Liège, 1920. Étude sur la transformisme: large oblong folio (640 × 840 mm) with original wooden display stand, c. 150 leaves, including several very large folding charts; Dictionnaire botanique: 3 vols, folio (340 × 200 mm), containing a total of more than 1200 leaves, various paper stocks, from heavy card to lighter paper. plus numerous blanks and dividing leaves (some with manuscript captions). All volumes fully completed with manuscript text and several thousand watercolour diagrams. Contemporary black morocco. The oblong folio volume with leaves towards the opening now loose, creasing and tears (without loss and mainly marginal or long folds) throughout, the 3 folio volumes in generally good condition. The life work of a Belgian natural history enthusiast, a massive and extraordinary collection of gathered knowledge, illustrated throughout with thousands of the author's distinctive naive watercolours. The manuscript, in four volumes (one elephant folio, three folios), consists of complex visual arrangements of data which often extends over huge folded charts, each leaf filled to its maximum extent in neat manuscript in coloured inks. Though undated, it includes materials gathered in the period c. 1920-1943 and perhaps before, and in an inserted note, the otherwise unknown compiler describes the work of 'most of my life'. It would appear to be the work of an amateur rather than an academic specialist, hence its striking originality as a work of popular science. The large folio volume is really a huge collection of charts devoted to human anatomy … [Click Below for Full Description]

An exceedingly rare dealer’s showroom album for the Paterson Six Model 6-46 touring sedan introduced by the Brass Era automobile company at the end of World War I. Paterson (1838-1921) founded the Paterson Co. carriage works in 1869, and was actually the carriage builder who launched William Durant’s famed career by constructing his first 1200 horse-drawn carts with spring suspension. Paterson later was a pioneer in the automobile industry, and was one of the earliest investors in Durant’s efforts to build General Motors, and by 1909 was manufacturing 2-cylinder automobiles with double chain drive and solid rubber tires. In 1910, the company introduced their first 4-cylinder horsepower, shaft driven motorcars, and eventually developed the Paterson Six, Model 6-46 which could reach 50 mph on developed highways. The Paterson Company maintained a widespread dealer network, including the Fashion Garage owned by Lawrence I. Sullivan (1887-1967) in Portland, OR, who rented and sold Paterson Six motorcars. This showroom album shows four Paterson Six touring cars lined up in front of Sullivan’s Garage, and another with four Portland women driving and riding in the popular a … [Click Below for Full Description]

With a frontispiece portrait of the author and 8 plates with reproductions of photographs. Original publisher's grey cloth; rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. First edition, second printing, of a history of the Arabian Gulf and its surrounding countries by the British army officer Samuel Barrett Miles (1838-1914), "a most significant contribution to the European knowledge of Oman" (New Arabian Studies). It starts with the ancient civilizations in the region, followed by chapters on the advent of Islam on the Gulf coast, the Portuguese era in eastern Arabia, and various dynasties, including the Yaareba and the Al-Bu Saeedi dynasty. Other chapters describe the commerce and economy of the Gulf, its pearl fishery, and the different tribes living there, with an entry on the Al-Kowasim, "a powerful Maadic tribe occupying the sea ports on the Pirate coast" (p. 430) and the Beni Yas and "their two towns Abu Thabi and Debaye" (p. 438). - Miles's first appointment in Arabia was as assistant resident at Aden in 1867 and he later became political agent and consul at Muscat, before being promoted to Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel" (preface). The book remains an authoritative source on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

1920. We offer an original recruitment poster for the Jung Stahl Helm or Steel Helmets designed by Ludwig Hohlwein. It was produced between WWI and WWII, with institutions listing this with a 1920-1923 range. It is 33” x 23” backed with linen and housed in a fine black frame with the outside dimensions 38 ½” x 27 ½”. The text along the bottom reads “Herausgerber der Stahlhelm, Bund Der Frontsoldaten, Druck, Herm, Sonntag & Co., Munchen.” A young Steel Helmet cadet with a shadowy half smile looks out at the viewer, “KOMM MIT” the poster demands. The ominously striking composition is representative of Hohlwein’s groundbreaking style. Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) was a German poster artist, a pioneer of the Sachplakat style. Condition: There are two light dampstains in the left margin, otherwise very good.

Illustrated with twenty monochrome plates. With three pages of press notes to the rear. Collated, complete. A pictorial look at the Black Country. The Black Country is an area in the West Midlands in England, containing Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, and Wolverhampton. The area is so named as it was heavily affected by the Industrial Revolution, being industrialised with coal mines, iron foundries, glass factories, steel mills, and more. All of this new industrial business produced a high level of pollution. The drawings were inspired by the artist's travels during the First World War, when he travelled between Liverpool and London by train. On this journey, he saw much of the industrial landscape of the Black Country, and was inspired to create this work. The plates show bold shapes and geometric patterns. They are all woodcuts, and all printed in black paint, depicting moody scenes of the Black Country. Illustrated by the English Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth, who was known for his coastal views and still lives. He … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elmer D. Raymond
1920. Around The World: Letters From A Globetrotter. Very Good. Hardcover. As the world moved on from the horrors of WWI, people began think more and more about travelling to other parts of the world. In some cases, they may have had a taste of it from the experience of going to other countries in the war. In other circumstances, the increasing prosperity of the Twenties (1920s) made such travel now possible for a wider segment of the population. Elmer D Raymond formed the "Round-the-World Society" and became its leader calling himself a "Globetrotter." His solicitation offered to send letters "from the mighty metropolises of European civilization, from the squalid villages of African savagery, from the icy wastes of the Arctic, [and] from the barren sands of the deserts" to all who subscribed to his service. It's unknown how many people subscribed to become members of the Society. These folded letters were written by Raymond and sent to members of the "Round-the-World Society" without envelopes but stamped and postmarked from the visited countries. They would be compiled and saved and bound into volumes with inserts and a pull-out map of the world. Entitled, "Letters From a Globetrotter", when read, they would be an accurate commentary of the shrinking world as it existed in 1925 and 1926. Each of Raymond's letters consist of three type-written pages. Each is numbered using Roman numerals. Each letter has the postmarked postage stamps still affixed. All have individual titles such as In the Nest of Pirates, The Dancing Nigger is in Town, With the Spani … [Click Below for Full Description]

In his book *A Mask for Privilege: anti-Semitism in America" Carey McWilliams had this to say about Henry Ford: "Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent in the issue of May 20. 1920, suddenly discovered 'the Jewish problem.' There had been premonitory rumblings from the Sage of Dearborn. During the war years, he had vaguely intimated that a 'small clique' was pushing Wilson toward war. Ford had become by 1920 a world-famous figure, an oracle whose views were eagerly solicited on every domestic and international question. It … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bohla, Alois
Passau: Bohla - Verlag Neue Motive, 1920. First edition. Loose leaf. vg to fine. Quarto Portfolio. (1) 20 plates. Original gray quarter-cloth portfolio with color illustrated paper-covered boards and black lettering on cover with decorative paper-covered back board. Printed introduction pasted to inside front cover. When Bohla began his second portfolio, Neue Motive, it was meant to become an inspiration for the viewer and entice him or her to be active and creative in this field. The backdrop for this work is stated in the introduction by the author: "The study of nature serves as foundation from the outset. Not to copy nature, as a trained eye sees it, was the intention, something different could be created only when considering the form of the presentation. The objective is to create studies in a beautiful rendition, the extraction of decorative forms while applying complete freedom, recording the essence while omitting all ornateness is the general guideline. Starting with the choice of motifs diligence has to be applied. Useful native plants and animals are plentiful in nature. You can find them. magnifiers and mirrors might disclose hidden allures/charms. Happy and fresh colors are to be used. Tasteful lines and motifs emphasize a certain timelessness." (Introduction). The designs in this collection are similar to his first publication "Neue Motive für flächendeckende Verzierung" - in part based on the same botanical patterns of nature - this work is more abstract and is broadened by the addition of modern animal motifs. The transition from Jugendstil to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elkin Mathews, 1920. FIRST EDITION, pp. 128, crown 8vo, original quarter fawn linen and grey boards, lettered in black to upper board and backstrip, the latter with a few light spots, edges roughtrimmed and browned, free endpapers browned in part, small Japanese newspaper clipping (with ms. note '24.2.21 E. Pound') folded and laid in between Contents Page and first page of text with offset browning to both, the scarce printed dustjacket present (lacking backstrip panel, the portion of which displaying title is laid in at front), browned with some chipping, good. One of 1,000 copies in the trade edition. The dustjacket, recorded by Gallup, is seldom encountered; from the flaps we can see that it was originally a duck-egg blue - the typography has an Oriental touch that is not inappropriate. Two photographs show the woman and her friends dressed in graduation caps with school flyers for Harvard and Dartmouth. 1920. This amazing collection contains 600 Dell Paperbacks with fabulous illustrated covers, and an original Dell bookshelf, which would have been given to bookstores to display the paperbacks. This collection contains the first 600 books in the Dell "mapback" style including the very rare Dell Crossword puzzle books. Wooden bookshelf measures 14" x 14" x 54" and is marked on the back with "loaned for display of Dell books only." Overall very good. Most books are in very good condition with light wear to all edges and light soiling; there are some in good condition only, with moderate chipping, creasing and soiling; bookshelf has a few dings but is in very good condition. No publisher was better at creating a collectible style of book than Dell. Dell was first known as one of the largest publishers of magazines (between the 1920s-1940s) , and beginning in 1943 they entered into paperback book publishing with Dell Paperbacks. Because of their small size, the cover art was an important selling point. Dell Paperbacks led the publishing world using their "Keyhole" logo, vibrant and flashy airbrushed paintings, and for the first time, using the back cover as an equally important marketing space as the front. Nicknamed "mapbacks," most early Dell paperbacks had a colorful map showing the locale where the book's events took place. The genre published most often was mystery but also included romance, westerns, thrillers, science fiction, joke books and crossword puzzle books. These paperback books were massed produced and incredibly popular. Dell Paperbacks were sold in drugstores, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DREISER, Theodore
Los Angeles, 1920. Letters. Creases from mailing. Near Fine. Also as an experimenter myself in the possibilities of the stage I have … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
