Blatt 10 aus: Die Schaffenden, II. Jahrgang, 4. Mappe, 1920. [A collection of brochures and folders on mountaineering].[Austria and Switzerland, ca. 1920- ca. 1980]. Ca. 653 brochures (including a few duplicates and variant issues). With: [A collection of books relating to mountaineering].[Globally, ca. 1830- ca. 2000]. Ca. 875 books (including a few duplicates and variant issues, and several multiple-volume titles).

An extensive and wide-ranging collection of brochures, folders and books on climbing and hiking and all other aspects related to mountaineering mainly in the Central European mountain areas. The brochures and folders concentrate on the decisive factor in that far-reaching process: the emergence of tourism. This part of the collection, comprised of 653 rare and beautiful designed travel brochures and folders, show a colorful and fascinating overview of summer tourism in the central European mountain areas (mainly Austria and Switzerland) as it developed since the 1920s: from an exclusive hiking and climbing area for the European elite during the first half of the 20th century, to the very popular and well facilitated commercial centers as we know the today. Many of these were designed by notable (poster) artists such as Herbert Matter (especially interesting because of the photomontage techniques used), Hubert Mumelter, Martin Peikert, Franz Stümvoll, Hans Thoni, and contain numerous photographs from leading photographers and various panorama's and maps by Josef Rueb, Heinrich Caesar Berann, Max Bieder, Füssli, Wolfgang Hausamann and A. Klopfenstein. The book collection of ca. 875 pieces provides an comprehensive overview of climbing on all continents, most prominently in the Alps, the Andes, the Himalaya and the Karakoram. Except for numerous, well-documented narratives of the climbing expeditions of unexplored summits and other ascents in remote and little-known mountain wilderness since the 1850s, the collection zooms in on a broad range of related subjects. These include the mental and technical aspects of climbing, climbing equipment, the art of previewing and reading of available (and easiest) routes, climbing accommodations and mountain huts, as well as risk and safety. But also detailed physical and social geographical descriptions of the mountain area, its peoples, customs and architecture and the gradual opening up of the terrain. This exceptional collection was brought together by the Dutch amateur-mountaineer Bastiaan Cornelis Pieter Hendrik van Baak, a fanatical climber and hiker since the early 1930s, fascinated and inspired by the overwhelming and ever challenging mountain world.

        "The Fairy Dance"

Melbourne: 1920. Original drawings by Ethel Spowers, one of Australia's best "fairy illustrators". A Melbourne based school of fantasy illustration emerged in Melbourne inspired by the work and commercial success of Ida Rentoul Outwaite in the first part of the 20th. century. Spowers, along with Christian Yandell and Ethel Jackson Morris were at the forefront of this coherent artistic Melbourne phenomenon. Spowers exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society and the Arts and Crafts Society. Aware of the growing school of contemporary fantasy illustration on the international scene she drew on the influence of leading overseas artists including Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. Towards the end of her life, Spowers destroyed most of her work. Examples of her original art are extremely difficult to find. This charming work is rare survivor. Original watercolour, 200mm x 206mm, signed and dated 1920, mounted and framed.

This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

His views were accepted and from 1917 till the end of the war he was a neurological specialist in the Army, and subsequently under the Ministry of Pensions. He did excellent work in this field, practising at Maghull near Liverpool, and collaborating with Drs Bernard Hart, T H Pear, and Aldren Turner. He wrote his thesis for the London doctorate on psychoneuroses of war. After his earlier experience in surgery and tropical medicine, Culpin proved a highly original and successful psychiatrist. He was appointed lecturer in psychoneurosis at the London Hospital in 1920, and built up a large private practice at 1 Queen Street. His methods were never spectacular, but he was a pioneer of dynamic psychology. (Source: Royal College of surgeons) During World War 1 Culpin served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. As a military surgeon at Portsmouth and in France his experiences with shell-shocked soldiers led to an interest in war neuroses and its varied psychological manifestations. He published his research findings for his doctoral thesis as Psychoneuroses of War and Peace (Cambridge, 1920). In the 1920s he devoted his time to medical psychology, researched industrial health and lectured part time at the University of London. An eclectic thinker, with interests in psychoanalysis, temperament and abnormality, he was captive of no school, a loner, although well respected. In 1931 Culpin was appointed professor in industrial and medical psychology at the London School of Health and Tropical Medicine. Among his publications was a 1935 article for the Practitioner, 'Neurasthenia in the Tropics', which argued that white people could inhabit the tropics without ill effects. A 29-line poem about women deferring to their pampered husbands, apparently in response to Kipling's poem "The Vampire," a soliloquy about the tender and bruised hearts of men who place their hopes in unfeeling women. The poem mimics some of the tropes and rhyme schemes of the Kipling poem. The final stanzas celebrate the reversal of that state of affairs:"But praise be sung in every tongueFor equal rights thruout the land!At last the men are on the run,Every single mother's son,And we the victory have won!(And they can't understand.)"Presumably the poem was prepared upon some triumph for women's rights, most likely the achievement of the vote, whether at the state or federal level is unclear. While there is no place of publication, our strong suspicion is that it was published in California. OCLC locates no copies. It does locate a single copy of a piece of sheet music by an author with this name published in Los Angeles in 1916. .

Autograph letter signed to Clive Bell

two pages 22 August 1920, Somerset - On the letterhead of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Society upon which Strachey has written a return address in Somerset. "Your interesting communication has just reached this remote spot. I don't see The Times down here and was beginning to think that something must surely be happening and wondering very much what. I am very glad it was successful, but I shall certainly eternally regret Clarissa. I don't like Gratian - the name, not the thing. I wish it might be other; Gratian Bell - especially if he is to be literary - is so horribly like a pseudonym. I am sorry Virginia is not yet re-established, but I cannot wonder. She must certainly have been using up the life force at an incredibly rapid pace before she retired, and will naturally take some time to fit herself out again. I only hope she will lay in a good stock before she begins to compose again. I have been meeting a friend of yours - Noel Barwell, who in homeopathic sized doses is amusing, but in the bulk would bore me to tears. Please give my very best love to Vanessa. Marjorie Strachey". In excellent condition.

Psychoneurosis of War and Peace. Thesis Approved for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine in the University of London.

Cambridge, Cambridge University Press. 1920 - First Edition of the printed Thesis. Octavo. 127 pages. Hardcover / Original publisher's olive green cloth with black lettering on spine and frontcover. Very minor signs of bumping and very few, really only tiny signs of spotting to cover and edges. The binding and endpapers absolutely firm and especially clean inside. Very good or even better condition of this extremely scarce and important publication.['Culpin was among the first who realised that "shell-shock" and the deep effects of fear in war, such as disordered action of the heart, were emotional disturbances, more acute than the anxiety neuroses of peace' - Source: Royal College of Surgeons] Includes for example the following essays: A General View of Symptomatology / Psycho-Pathological Mechanisms / The Part Played by Suggestion / Etiology / Etiological Classification / Treatment / Technique or Revival of Memories / Dreams / Phobias and Obsessions / Hysterical Fits and Epilepsy / Stammers and Tremors / Gross AMnesia / Pathological Irritability / An Autobiography / Various CAses / Difficulties in Diagnosis / Summary / Bibliography / Culpin was among the first who realised that "shell-shock" and the deep effects of fear in war, such as disordered action of the heart, were emotional disturbances, more acute than the anxiety neuroses of peace. P.S. What do you think of the market?

1920 - 8vo., original cloth backed paper covered boards lettered in green on upper board. Repair to tear on gutter of title-page otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by the author. A series of 38 humorous fictional letters between an investor, Dave, and his broker Eddie. While satirical in tone, the letters offer insights into the worries and frustrations inherent in playing the stock market, and foreshadow the crash and subsequent depression that would come ten years later. “A. Kustomer” was the pseudonym of Jacques S. Cohen. At the time of the book’s publication, Cohen was the head of the Statistical Department at J.S. Bache & Co., a securities firm, and later worked at the firm of Baar, Cohen & Co. He also wrote numerous articles for The Financial World, also published by The Guenther Publishing Co., which was run by Louis Guenther. Louis Guenther is perhaps best known for the libel and blackmail suit he was embroiled in during the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1911, George Graham Rice, himself a known con artist, published an article in the magazine Adventure (owned by the Ridgway Company) accusing Guenther of using The Financial World as a blackmail scam, supposedly threatening various businesses with bad press if they refused to purchase advertising. Guenther fought back, ultimately winning a libel suit against The Ridgway Company in 1915. A few years later, Jacques S. Cohen, apparently unfazed by Guenther’s supposedly unsavory business practices, began publishing his “Eddie from Dave” letters in The Financial World as well as articles under his own name. Apparently unaffected by the scandal, The Financial World continued publishing until it folded in 1998. From the library of Harry Hoffman, presumably the same Harry Hoffman who was World Secretary of the American Exchange National Bank in New York in 1922. The inscription, which reads, “Harry Hoffman: To my friend and counsellor. Who if he had wisely counselled, perhaps I would not have written this bookâ€"Jacques S Cohen Dec 8/1920”, is the only indication that Cohen was indeed the author. Even James L. Fraser, an investment counselor who self-published a revised edition in 1966, did not know the identity of “A. Kustomer”. He writes in his introduction that even Richard Anderson, then-editor of The Financial World, knew nothing of Kustomer’s identity, and that it is, “one of the many little mysteries that often crop up when one digs into Wall Street’s past.” In 2013, the book was revised, annotated, and privately reprinted again as Letters to My Broker: P.S. What Do You Think of the Market? by Clem Chambers, a financial pundit as well as CEO of ADVFN, a financial market website. He too, did not know the identity of the original author. These reprints are a testament to this odd and obscure little book’s enduring relevance to the financial world. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

THE LURE OF THE PAST ..

London: Stanley Paul & Co, [1920].. Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-256, original tan cloth, front panel ruled in blind, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. "A weird horror novel about a Londoner who is drawn back, partly through the use of drugs, into his former lives in Egypt and Rome, a process that exhausts his vitality and attachment to the present until it kills him. Commercial fiction, to be sure, but a notch above the pulp turned out by Wright & Brown, Jenkins, etc., and, though not as rare as his THE WINE OF DEATH (1925), a scarce book as well. Only one holding given by OCLC (at UCLA, in the Nitka Collection -- as is the sole OCLC holding of THE WINE OF DEATH). This is not your grandmother's vaporous reincarnation romance." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 10. Reginald 00493. Early owner's signature on front paste-down. Cloth a bit rubbed at spine ends, corner tips and along outer joints, free endpapers tanned with some offset on first and last leaves of text, but overall a solid, clean, very good copy of an uncommon book.         The Feet of the Young Men, copy #11 of 377, signed by Kipling and the personal copy of Kipling's publisher, Nelson Doubleday

Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1920. Signed, limited, and numbered first edition. Hardcover. This is copy #11 of the first, signed, and limited edition of 377 copies and bears the personal library bookplate of Kipling's friend and publisher Nelson Doubleday. The poem The Feet of the Young Men, “a celebration of the outdoors life”, originally appeared in Scribner's Magazine for December 1897 and was first collected in book form in The Five Nations (1903). This is the first separate edition. Publication was driven by photographer Lewis Freeman, who contributes a 14-page introduction, in which he tells Kipling of his 15-year quest to collect photographs to illustrate the lines of the poem. Freeman relates how he first read Kipling's poem in 1904 in The Five Nations, and was immediately taken by the desire to pay tribute to the poem in a form that his words simply could not. There are 87 photographs on coated paper, most captioned by a line from the poem. This first, signed, and limited edition was issued in gilt-stamped quarter vellum spine over orange-yellow Japan paper covered boards with gilt double frame rules on outside borders and blind-stamped gold rectangular front cover panel, gray endpapers with alternating rows of swastikas and anchors, and contents printed on coated paper. This copy is in very good condition. The binding remains square and tight with sharp corners. We note customary toning to the vellum spine, though the gilt spine print remains legible. The boards are lightly scuffed and soiled. The distinctive endpapers remain intact and the contents show only mild spotting, primarily confined to the limitation and half-title pages. Kipling's signature and hand-numbered “11” remain distinct. The sole previous ownership mark is the decorative library bookplate of Nelson Doubleday affixed to the front pastedown. This book came to us from the library of Nelson Doubleday Jr., son of Nelson Doubleday, and grandson of Frank Nelson Doubleday, Kipling's friend and U.S. publisher and founder of the Doubleday publishing empire. F.N. Doubleday began work in the publishing industry working for Charles Scribner's Sons. His 18-year career with Scribner's included the task of assembling a complete set of Kipling's works for publication in a collected edition in 1897. His work with Kipling on this endeavor sparked a friendship and partnership that lasted for decades. Kipling affectionately gave Doubleday the nickname "Effendi", a play on the initials of his name - F.N.D. Frank's son Nelson was president of the firm from 1922 to 1946, as was Nelson Jr., from 1978 to 1983. This book has several instances of Kipling's swastika - on endpaper design, and on the title page. The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune”, and this ancient hooked cross symbol was used at least 5,000 years before being polluted by association with Hitler's Reich.  It remains a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. The swastika is a symbol common to many editions of Kipling's works and came to Kipling's attention through his father's encyclopaedic knowledge of Indian art. Iconic English poet, short-story writer, and novelist Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism, tales and poems of British soldiers in India, and his tales for children.  Despite this reputation, Kipling's extraordinary body of work “eludes all labels in its range and variety… Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence, it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: ‘Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures.'” (ODNB)  Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907.  Kipling remains the youngest person to receive the Prize and was also the first English language author awarded. Blatt 10 aus: Die Schaffenden, II. Jahrgang, 4. Mappe, 1920.
