The Storm of Steel. From the Diary of a German Storm-Troop Officer on the Western Front. - [Emotionally inscribed by Chapman, who voices his disgust at Ernst Juenger's account of World War One. / Comes with Storm of Steel, Folio Society edition, London, 2012].

First English Language Edition. 14,5 cm x 20 cm. XIII, 319 pages. Original Hardcover. Red cloth with gilt lettering and ornaments to spine. Inscribed by Guy Chapman on the front free endpaper: 'The author is a most gifted liar...the usual bloody Boche'. / Small Exlibris / Bookplate 'Guy Chapman, Savile Club, London'. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Storm of Steel (in German: In Stahlgewittern) is the memoir of German officer Ernst Jünger's experiences on the Western Front during the First World War. It was originally printed privately in 1920, making it one of the first personal accounts to be published. The book is a graphic account of trench warfare. It was largely devoid of editorialization when first published, but was heavily revised several times. Storm of Steel begins with Jünger as a private entering the line with the 73rd Hanoverian Regiment in Champagne. His first taste of combat came at Les Éparges in April 1915 where he was first wounded. After recuperating, he took an officer's course and achieved the rank of Leutnant. He rejoined his regiment on the Arras sector. In 1916, with the Battle of the Somme underway, Jünger's regiment moved to Combles in August for the defence of the village of Guillemont. Here Jünger was wounded again, and fortunately absent shortly before the final British assault which captured the village his platoon was annihilated. In 1917 Jünger saw action during the Battle of Arras in April, the Third Battle of Ypres in July and October, and the German counter-attack during the Battle of Cambrai in November. Jünger led a company of assault troops during the final German Spring Offensive, 21 March 1918 when he was wounded again. On 23 August he suffered his most severe wound when he was shot through the chest. In total, Jünger was wounded 14 times during the war, including five bullet wounds. He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and was the youngest ever recipient of the Pour le Mérite. (Wikipedia) Ernst Jünger (29 March 1895 17 February 1998) was a highly decorated German soldier, author, and entomologist who became famous for his World War I memoir Storm of Steel. The son of a successful businessman and chemist, Jünger rebelled against an affluent upbringing and sought adventure in the Wandervogel, before running away to briefly serve in the French Foreign Legion, an illegal act. Because he escaped prosecution in Germany due to his father's efforts, Jünger was able to enlist on the outbreak of war. During an ill-fated German offensive in 1918 Jünger's World War I career ended with the last and most serious of his many woundings, and he was awarded the Pour le Mérite, a rare decoration for one of his rank. In the aftermath of World War II Jünger was treated with some suspicion as a possible fellow traveler of the Nazis. By the latter stages of the Cold War his unorthodox writings about the impact of materialism in modern society were widely seen as conservative rather than radical nationalist, and his philosophical works came to be highly regarded in mainstream German circles. Jünger ended his extremely long life as an honoured establishment figure, although critics continued to charge him with the glorification of war as a transcending experience. (Wikipedia) Major Guy Patterson Chapman OBE MC (September 1889 June 1972) was a British historian and author. He was educated at Westminster School, Christ Church, Oxford and the London School of Economics. He married Margaret Storm Jameson in 1926. Chapman served in the Royal Fusiliers, 191420, particularly in France and Belgium, 191518. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1919 New Year Honours. He was awarded the Military Cross in December 1919:For conspicuous gallantry and leadership near Ghissignies, on 4th November, 1918. When the battalion was going through Gihissignies in support of the attack, information was received that the left company of the leading battalion had been held up. Under heavy shell fire he went forward to reconnoitre, and found that the supporting battalion appeared likely to become prematurely involved in the fighting. By his energy and initiative in taking command of the situation this was prevented. He also served in World War Two. He was engaged in book publishing, 192040, and was Professor of Modern History, University of Leeds, 194553, and visiting Professor, University of Pittsburgh, 194849." (Wikipedia)

A fantastic early A.A. Milne ALS, discussing an early children's book he authored before his success of Winnie The Pooh

Chelsea, UK: , January 12, 1920. Chelsea, UK, January 12, 1920. 4.5" x 5.75". "Single page ALS, signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne"" and dated ""12. 1. 20"" (January 12, 1920), 4.5"" x 5.75"" on stationary with letterhead of 11, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074. Expected center fold. Very soft rippling to the page. Near fine. Before Christopher Robin and Milne's children series of adventures of Winnie The Pooh, Milne dabbled with an earlier novel he in part considered as a work for children, whoever one which could also be enjoyed by adults. In his letter to Vincent Seligman, who became a life long friend spanning his adult lifetime, Milne displays his typical jocular humor about his new children's novel, ""One on a Time"", published in 1917 by Hodder and Stoughton. He jovially pokes fun at himself when notes to Seligman, ""You seem to have had nearly all the copies of ""Once on a Time"" which were sold. This is my favorite book, and it is a shock to find that I only had two readers when I thought I had eight."" Milne heavily critiqued this book, and was known to have even said ""This is an odd book"" and indeed it is very difficult to classify. Ostensibly a typical fairytale, it tells the story of the war between the kingdoms of Euralia and Barodia and the political shenanigans which take place in Euralia in the king's absence, all supposedly rewritten by Milne from the writings of the fictional historian ""Roger Scurvilegs"".This letter marks the early beginnings of the making of one of the most famous children's authors of the 20th century! Milne created ""Once on a Time"" to contain believable, three-dimensional characters, rather than the stereotypes which will satisfy children. Hence the book introduces us to a princess who is far from helpless; a prince who, whilst handsome, is also pompous and vain; an enchantment which is almost entirely humorous; a villain who is not entirely villainous and receives no real comeuppance; a good king who isn't always good; an evil king who isn't always evil, and so on. The result is a book which children may not enjoy as much as adults. The book was written by Milne partly for his wife, upon whom the character of the Countess Belvane was partially based. He was known to grapple with the definition of a children's book, and philosophical about what exactly constitutes the definition of a children's book, including ""Once on a Time"". Milne was known to have said ""Is it a children's book? Well, what do we mean by that? Is The Wind In The Willows a children's book? Is Alice in Wonderland? Is Treasure Island? These are masterpieces which we read with pleasure as children, but with how much more pleasure when we are grown-up. In any case, what do we mean by ""children""? A boy of three, a girl of six, a boy of ten, a girl of fourteen - are they all to like the same thing? And is a book ""suitable for a boy of twelve"" any more likely to please a boy of twelve than a modern novel is likely to please a man of thirty-seven; even if the novel be described truly as ""suitable for a man of thirty-seven""? I confess that I cannot grapple with these difficult problems. But I am very sure of this: that no one can write a book which children will like, unless he write it for himself first. That being so, I shall say boldly that this is a story for grown-ups. [...] But, as you see, I am still finding it difficult to explain just what sort of book it is. Perhaps no explanation is necessary. Read in it what you like; read it to whomever you like; be of what age you like; it can only fall into one of the two classes. Either you will enjoy it, or you won't.""This delightful early letter, signed in full by A.A. Milne, is shown below. Little did he know at the time just how much he would come to dominate children's literature, with no worries about just how many copies were to be sold and read:""12 . 1 . 20Dear Mr. Seligman,I am afraid we cannot manage lunch on Thursday. My wife is a way at present, and probably comes back on that afternoon and I am engaged (illegible) thursday. After … if we may; or you must come and see us then and be introduced to the elephant outside the door.Re. Simpson. First … he is imaginary, though I know somebody like him (in manner, not in appearance). But curiously enough my wife and I were at the theatre on Thursday – though not in a box- and on the way out I was spoken to by a man whom I know slightly who is exactly like Simpson, this imaginary Simpson, in appearance. I feel that this must have been the man you saw. Otherwise the whole theatre seems to have been crowded with them. You seem to have had (illegible) the copies of ""Once on a Time"" which were sold. This is my favorite book, and it is a shock to find that I only had two readers when I thought I had eight. But I am very grateful to you for insisting on it.Yours sincerely,A.A. Milne"""

M. M,” signed by him. Presentation copy from Matisse's youngest son, Pierre, and his first wife Alexina ""Teeny"" Sattler, inscribed on a front flyleaf, ""For Dr. Bartlett from Pierre and Teeny Matisse."" Beautifully bound.Matisse himself edited and printed this lovely suite of 50 photo-lithographic reproductions of his drawings of women to accompany a 1920 exhibition of his work. ""Daily painting sessions alternated with hours on end devoted to drawing, a corrective Matisse would use from now on whenever he felt his work was in danger of losing its balance between color and feeling on the one hand, and line and form on the otherÂ… He returned over and over again to a lace collar, drawing it first in minute detail until he had got it by heart and could translated it at will with two swift lines 'into an ornament, an arabesque, without losing the character of lace, and of that particular lace'Â… Matisse was evolving methods he would use for the rest of his life. He published fifty of these drawings in a portfolio called Cinquante Dessins to coincide with his exhibition at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. A surge of renewed energy pulses between the lines of the letters he wrote home as he drew them"" (Spurling, Matisse the Master, 225-26). Matisse's youngest son Pierre, who has inscribed and presented this copy, was born in 1900. He exhibited an early interest in the art market, and as a young man took a job at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert in Paris. In 1924, he came to New York, where he began a distinguished career of 65 years as an art dealer. He married Alexina ""Teeny"" Sattler in 1929; they separated in 1949. Preface by Charles Vildrac.         Über eine eigenartige herdförmige Erkrankung des Zentralnervensystems.

Berlin: Springer, 1920. First edition, in the original printed wrappers, of the first description of what later became known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or CJD, following its independent identification by Alfons Jakob one year later. "Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alfons Jakob independently authored clinical and pathologic descriptions of a new syndrome in the 1920s. This syndrome, which subsequently came to be named after them, was characterized by dementia, motor and coordination abnormalities, a fatal course, and pathologic findings of diffuse spongiform neuronal degeneration. Although it appeared for many years to be little more than a medical curiosity, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease attained widespread attention by its pathologic similarity to kuru and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, 'mad cow disease.' Because there are sporadic, familial, and iatrogenic forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, it is considered to have both genetic and infectious aspects. Although its causation has for some time been ascribed to 'slow viruses,' the etiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is currently thought to be due to prions, small proteinaceous infectious particles that have genetic encoding. The debate regarding whether the appearance of atypical Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be linked to the epidemic of 'mad cow disease' is currently unresolved" (Sternbach et al, p. 701). "While working at Alzheimer's neuropsychiatric clinic, 'Creutzfeldt studied the case of a 22-year old woman suffering from tremors, spasticity, and pyramidal signs. She became ataxic and demented. Her later symptoms included nystagmus, rigidity, myoclonus, and mutism; she ultimately died in status epilepticus 12 months after the onset. At Autopsy, Creutzfeldt found moderate cerebral atrophy with a patchy diffuse neuronal loss, pronounced astroglial hypertrophy, and bilateral degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. Creutzfeldt did not mention either neuronal vacuolation or a spongy state. Because of the war, publication was delayed until 1920. In 1921, Alfons Jakob (1884-1931) described three cases of 'spastic pseudosclerosis, disseminated encephalomyelopathy', and subsequently reported two other cases ['Über eigenartige Erkrankungen des Zentralnervensystems mit bemerkenswerten anatomischen Befunden,' Zeitschrift für die gesamte Neurologie und Psychiatrie 64, 147-228]. Jakob had examined Creutzfeldt's slides, and noting similarities among some of their cases, grouped them together as examples of 'spastic pseudosclerosis', a term Creutzfeldt disagreed with, believing their cases constituted a new clinical entity" (Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences, Vol. 1, p. 898). Creutzfeldt's material was lost during World War II. "Hans-Gerhard Creutzfeldt (1885-1964) was born in Harburg, Germany, and studied medicine in Jena, Rostock, and Kiel, where he received his MD in 1908. He wrote his thesis on tumors of the pituitary gland. From 1910 to 1912, he worked as a ship's doctor and then studied neuropathology with Ludwig Edinger in 1912. He spent 2 years with Alois Alzheimer in Breslau (present Wroclaw, Poland). After World War I, he worked with Walther Spielmeyer in Munich and with Ernst Siemerling in Kiel. For the next 14 years, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry of the Charité Hospital in Berlin with Karl Bonhoeffer. He returned to Kiel in 1938, was appointed director of Neuropsychiatry at the Christian-Albrechts University, and served there until 1953. He was one of the few academics who refused to join the Nazi party. He became the first postwar Rector of the University (1945-46). He ended his academic career at the Psychiatric Institute of Munich in 1955. He died after a long illness in 1964" (ibid.). Garrison-Morton 4719.1.         Sample case of woolen swatches

1920. (CLOTHING) BRUNER WOOLEN COMPANY. Sample case of woolen swatches. New York: circa 1920. Original hinged black paper-covered cardboard box (28 by 11 by 7-1/2 inches), with embossed fold-down front flap and three compartments containing a total of 269 swatches mounted on style cards. $1800.Original salesman’s sample case, with 269 mounted swatches representing bolts of woolen fabric, sold wholesale to tailors all over the country, each swatch printed with the slogan “Our virgin wool guarantee insures superior tailoring and excellent wear.”In 1922, the Bruner Woolen Company of New York was said to be the largest woolen goods manufacturer in the world. With its primary mill in Winooski, Vermont and warehouses and display room space in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, Bruner Woolens offered “quality woolens especially made for high class tailoring, serges and other fabrics by the yard.” “For some years before 1922, four corporations, Detmer Woolen Company, Bruner Woolen Company, Mason & Hanson, and Salzer & Wolf, had carried on in the United States sale of woolens and trimmings to tailors by supplying to the trade samples, mounted on style cards, which in turn were put into boxes with order blanks, envelopes addressed to the vendor and explanatory literature… In 1922 the four corporations conveyed their property, including trade-marks, to a new corporation organized under the name Detmer, Bruner & Mason. This company did not manufacture, but purchased woolens and trimmings in the market and sold them to retail merchants by the same means and in the same manner as the predecessor corporations had done” (Wawak Co. vs. Kaiser). Case moderately worn, cloth hinges holding, damage to only one or two swatches. A scarce example of marketing in the textile industry, in extremely good condition.

Meynial 1920 - 12cm x 8cm. The fourth almanac produced by George Barbier is a sumptuous little book. Silk covers with colour illustrations in pochoir by Barbier, all edges gilt. In the pictorial dustwrapper and slipcase. A fine copy of the book, in fine dustwrapper and slipcase. Patterned endpapers, pictorial title page decorative borders and chapter headings. Six pochoir colour plates in the typical Art Deco style one associates with Barbier's work. Guirlandes des Mois is a series of almanacs produced by Jules Maynial and illustrated by George Barbier, the delightful little books (five in total) were published annually between 1917 - 1921. Barbier was a keen book collector and his own collection included a series of seventeenth - early nineteenth century almanacs and it was this collection which inspired the design of the Guirlandes. The books contain an anthology of writings, bank pages for notes and a calendar. The illustrations are beautifully delicate, with covers, dustwrappers and box all containing different drawings. Beginning on the war years many of the illustrations reflect the times, with images of soldiers on leave wooing elegant young women. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Charming portrait photograph by Resines, (Maria de la Asunción Solange, ('Marisol', b. 1911, later Countess of Odiel), her sister FRANCESCA, ('Paca', b. 1913) and brother JOSÉ, ('Pepito', 1917-1970), the children of Fernando de Mesia y Fitz-James Stuart, (1881-1948, Count of Mora, later Duke of Tamames), and of his Countess Marie Solange, (1877-1943, née de Lesseps)]

1920 - unsigned, showing the children barefoot in short white clothes, inscribed on the mount, apparently in the Countess of Mora's hand, "Marie Sol 8 ans, Paca 7 ans, y Pepito Mora, 3 ans", 8¼" x 6" in mount 14¾" x 11", no place, Annotated on the verso that the inscription is by Queen Ena. Don Fernando was a nephew of Empress Eugénie (Queen Ena's godmother) on his father's side, and through his mother descended from the Dukes of Alba. His French-born wife descended from the famous engineer. The Count and Countess were staunch supporters of Queen Ena in the court rivalries of the 1920s and when she was in exile the Count sometimes helped out with hotel bills, saying "Ena has been very naughty". In 1933 Marisol was made Countess of Odiel and married Alfonso XIII's nephew the Infante José Eugenio, 1909-1966, (son of Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria and Spain, 1884-1958, by his first wife Maria Teresa, 1882-1912, the King's sister). Pepito succeeded his father as Duke of Tamames. From Queen Ena's private collection.

New York: Macmillan Company,, 1920. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914?1917. Octavo. Original green cloth, title to spine and front board. Colour frontispiece and 87 half-tone plates, folding map at the rear. A little rubbed, corners bumped, head and tail of the spine crumpled and just starting to split, a little give in both hinges, mild tape residue marks to the free ednpapers, pale toning throughout and the occasional spot of foxing, short closed tear to the map, overall very good. First US edition of Shackleton's account of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the year following the first UK This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "To Miss Jacobs with best wishes from E.H. Shackleton 21st June 1920". Shackleton's own account of the infamous Endurance Expedition. In 1914, Shackleton and a 28-man crew had set out on the Endurance in the hope to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent ? an 1800 miles journey, sea to sea. However, in January 1915, due to exceptionally cold and icy conditions, the Endurance was trapped in ice. Ten months later, the pressure of the ice crushed the ship which sank, leaving Shackleton stranded some 1,600 km from any human activity. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts, Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (ODNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal.
