First album: 26 photographs and postcards of Herzl, his family and fellow Zionists. Second album: Photographs, postcards, clippings from magazines, 2 small brass reliefs and one embroidery of Herzl, his family, the zionist congresses and related scenes arranged in an album (65 items in total). Third album: Scenes from a memorial service for Theodor Herzl. Zionist-Socialist youth organizations (Kartell Zionistisch-Sozialistischer Jugendverbande) and their leaders, some with flags, in uniforms and insignia, pass by the graves of Herzl and his parents in the Doblinger Cemetery. A few scenes captured on the streets of the city. This album offers a unique insight into European Zionist culture with its use of social clubs for different age groups organized in military fashion.         Collection of 14 political flyers distributed during the 1919 and 1920 elections in Bavaria

      Various: German Political Parties, 1920. Hardcover. fair to vg. Various sizes. Original printed flyers on various papers and in various colors.An extraordinary mirror of the political climate in Bavaria two years after the end of W.W.I exhibited in 9 letter size and 4 smaller size election flyers. The tenor of all flyers reflects the extremely agitated atmosphere of the time warning the voters in drastic language to beware of corruption and profiteering of the Hoffmann government and its followers on one hand, and of the Jewish population, bolshevism and socialism as administered by the representatives of the Räterepublik on the other. The content of the flyers varies from patriotic to educational and propaganda bids to expose the true nature of the Räterepublik.Among the parties and institutions responsible for the distribution of the flyers are the Bayrische Mittelpartei claiming that no Jewish citizens are members and belaboring the failure of the current system, the Deutsche Demokratische Partei boldly announcing election fraud. Appeals by the Bayrische Volkspartei to vote for their candidates and the Deutsche Volkspartei calling for unity against Bolshevism and "Red Terror." A flyer by the NSDAP printed on both sides with an appeal to duplicate and distribute points out a "Times" exposure on the Jewish world program to enslave the peoples of the world under Jewish rule. The Bayrische Volkspartei addresses women and girls in warning against radical leftist elements, militias (Einwohnerwehr, Wachregiment and Reichswehr) attacking the Räterepublik, a flyer by private citizens warning against the communist social democrat party (KPD and USP), a flyer by the publisher "Staatspolitischer Verlag" with caricatures taunting various political factions pointing out the Deutsche Volkspartei as the best choice for the elections, and an "unclaimed" small flyer attacking Jews, the stock marketeers, communists and traitors.Texts in German. The letter size flyer all have filing punch holes on the left side. There are small tears, one flyer with six inch closed tear, chips, creasing and some age toning. Flyers mostly in good to very good condition.

      Arizona, 1920. Very Good. A collection of four black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 5" x 8" two of which are hand colored. Very good photos with slight curling and creasing. The photos show candid scenes of a Native American market in Navajo County, Arizona in the 1920s with people leaning on stalls, talking, and a mother holding her baby. One photo shows the Navajo pueblos of the village Chimapovi in Toreva Polacca. The only captioned photo has the name Clyde H. Saloftoche who was most likely a Hopi chief.

Printed wrapper: 7, [1]pp., photographic frontispiece portrait and unpaged (approximately forty-one) gelatin silver photographs of the Sanskrit manuscripts. Contemporary custom binding by the Atelier Bindery in full pale brown morocco with four raised bands and black morocco spine label with title and decorations of dragons and swastikas in gilt, dentelles in elaborate gilt floral pattern, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Top corners slightly bumped, very near fine in custom cloth slipcase. One of 500 numbered copies, this copy unnumbered. Brief dissertation about the author's copies of rare Tibetan Sanskrit manuscripts. Apparently issued as an eight page pamphlet, this copy has been enhanced with the photographs and seems likely to have been the author's own copy. Attractive and beautifully bound volume. OCLC locates two copies of the pamphlet, but nothing with accompanying illustrations. (Yale and NYPL).

      1920 - Orazio Gaigher nasce a Barco di Levico (TN) nel 1870. Studia a Cortina d’Ampezzo, a Bressanone e a Innsbruck, seguendo il desiderio del padre medico che lo indirizza agli studi di medicina. Laureatosi, apre una clinica a Salisburgo. Coltiva la passione artistica con grande intensità, affascinato dal clima culturale della Secessione austriaca. Alla morte del padre, a 31 anni, decide di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla pittura. E’ il 1901. Parte per Londra, dove rimane fino al 1904, per studiare ritratto con Hubert von Herkomer. I suoi riferimenti sono legati al Simbolismo e al movimento Arts and Crafts di William Morris, ma la sua tensione più intima è sollecitata dal fascino del naturalismo della pittura preraffaellita, come mostrano le opere intitolate Notturno, Autunno e i Nudi, realizzati intorno al 1908, lavori nei quali la ricerca formale è fortemente intrisa di significato allegorico. Successivamente si reca in Spagna per conoscere le opere degli artisti spagnoli di corte; diventa amico di Gioacchino Sorolla. E’ affascinato dai ritratti di Velasquez. Nel 1906 è a Parigi, dove conosce Roberto Fleury e Eugenio Carrière. Incontra Romualdo Prati, giunto a Parigi nel 1905 per frequentare l’Accademia delle Belle Arti. Si specializza nel genere del ritratto e inizia a viaggiare per l’Europa e l’America eseguendo più di cinquecento commissioni. Nel 1914 realizza i ritratti di Pio X, Benedetto XV e Pio XI. L’anno seguente partecipa all’Esposizione Internazionale di San Francisco dove è premiato. A Trento ritrae l’Arcivescovo Celestino Endrici. Del 1924 è la pala di San Taddeo per la chiesa di Barco. L’anno seguente realizza per la chiesa di Pieve Tesino una Santa Maria Assunta e un San Sebastiano. Nel 1926 è a Buenos Aires, in Argentina. Nel 1928 esegue un San Bartolomeo per la chiesa di Torcegno, Nello stesso anno si reca in Patagonia dove si dedica al genere del paesaggio. Ritornato in Italia nel 1930, si stabilisce a Merano. Esegue per la chiesa rivana di Santa Maria Assunta una Santa Lucia. Di questi anni si ricordano Maternità, Signora con il gatto, Vendemmia in Trentino, opere nelle quali si incontrano lo spirito moderno e secessionista. E’ nominato Presidente degli Artisti della Provincia di Bolzano. Muore a Merano il 17 maggio 1938. Firmato in basso a sinistra, si vende in cornice.         (Broadside): Requiescat in Pace. Ald. Terence McSwiney (Lord Mayor of Cork)... Died in Brixton Prison, October 25th 1920 After a Hunger Strike Lasting Seventy Four Days. Age 40. His Last Words "God Save Ireland, Fight On! Fight On!

      London: Printer Burgess, 1920. Near Fine. Souvenir broadside or napkin. Approximately 13.5" x 13.5". Printed in black and purple on thin Japanese paper or tissue. Contemporarily mounted on buff-colored cardstock. Slight bleedthrough from the glue used in mounting, near fine. A commemoration of the death due to a hunger strike by the Sinn Fein Mayor of Cork, giving the order of the funereal procession. McSwiney was an Irish playwright, poet and pamphleteer. A leader of the Irish Nationalists in Kerry and Cork, he was arrested in Cork for possession of seditious articles and documents, while serving as Mayor. He immediately went on a hunger strike. His death focused world attention on the Irish Question, and his processions in both London and Cork drew huge crowds. Souvenir napkins survive to some degree, but seldom in nice condition, because of the thin material and they were usually stored folded. We acquired a few napkins where the owner had the forethought to mount them, probably almost immediately.

Photographic frontispieces with tissue guards, 13 plates and tailpiece illustrations. Small bookplate to front pastedowns and contemporary ownership inscription of Josephine B. Crane to front free endpapers. First edition, first printing, of a selection of James's correspondence, published to "throw the strongest light" on the celebrated philosopher's life and writings. A contemporary reviewer for The North American Review judged that the letters were "rich in their concise and accessible condensations of James's profounder convictions" (Gilman, p. 415). This set was given to American socialite and patron of the arts, Josephine B. Crane, by a friend for Christmas, 1920. Crane is remembered primarily as a co-founder and original trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was also a key benefactress of the elite Dalton School, which derived its name from the Crane family estate located in Sugar Hill, Dalton (the address which appears on the bookplates). The writer Juliet Bredon (c. 1881-1937) was the daughter of Sir Robert Edward Bredon, Bt (1846-1918), Deputy Inspector-General Imperial Maritime Customs, China, (1898-1908) and Acting Inspector-General of Customs with rank of Provincial Lieutenant-Governor (1908-1910). She spent much of her life in China, marrying Charles Lauru of Beijing, and she published a number of works on the country, including the present work, Chinese Shadows (Beijing: 1922), The Moon Year. A Record of Chinese Customs and Festivals (Shanghai: 1927), and a biography of her uncle, the famous inspector-general of customs in China, Sir Robert Hart Bt -- whose abilities and service were so highly regarded by the Chinese that 'his Chinese honours excelled in number and distinction those bestowed on any other European' (DNB) -- which was published in 1909. In her preface, Bredon explains that, 'Several books have been written about Peking by foreigners, but among these only two are comprehensive - Monseigneur Favier's monumental work Peking and Father Hyacinth Bitchurin's Description of Peking. This paucity of accurate accounts is chiefly due to the obstacles in the way of collecting precise information. The more one studies the fascinating old city, the more one realises the tantalising difficulties of learning, even from the Chinese themselves, anything but the merest outline of its history and monuments. A proper appreciation of Peking is not, I believe, in the power of a Westerner to give - certainly not of one single person - since it pre-supposes a thorough knowledge of China's past, an infinite sympathy with Chinese character and religions, an intimate sympathy with Chinese character and religions, an intimate familiarity with the proverbs and household phrases of the poor, the songs of the streets, the speech of the workshop, no less than the mentality of the literati and the motives of the rulers' (p. vii). Therefore, her book intends to provide a fuller description of the city than a conventional guide-book that will be of interest to the general reader: 'it aims at nothing original, - is simply a gathering up of the information of others, a gleaning from what has already been given to the world in a far better and fuller but less portable form. Its purpose is simply to play the part of a friend to resident and visitor alike - a friend (in whose taste you perhaps have confidence) to take you by the arm for a stroll through the city and its suburbs' (pp.viii). However, Bredon's book has subsequently become a very useful source on life in Beijing during the early twentieth century (and especially its architecture), and is widely cited in later literature on the period.

      Massachusetts and Connecticut 1920 - Two volumes. Large oblong quartos. Measuring 9.5" x 12". String-tied black cloth over paper boards. The two volumes contains 325 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 4" and 3.5" x 5.75", some with captions on the verso. Very good photo album with some tears with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a New England family during the first half of the 1920s. From the few captions it appears that many of the photos were taken in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The majority of the photos are taken on the seaside during a number of summers. These photos show the family in bathing costumes of the era playing on the beach and swimming. One photo shows two women lounging in the sand with a parasol. Most of the photos are candid snapshots and catch family and friends in the midst of conversation and games, such as an action shot of a game of leap frog. The New England coast is captured in lovely amateur snaps of seaside towns and crowds of people on the beaches, including West Haven Beach in Connecticut. Along with the vacation photos there are numerous shots of neighborhoods and family homes in different seasons. Some show a group of men working on the road in May with large swathes of the street torn up so that a track can be laid down, possibly for a trolley or streetcar. Another selection of photos show houses in winter covered in snow with views of barren trees lining the streets. There are also photos of a city taken looking down on the buildings from one of the taller buildings, showing bustling streets and billboards. Throughout the album small groups of family members are seen posing in nice clothes for various gatherings and events in front of family homes, farms, and in gardens. The generous number of snapshots and the nature of the photography suggests that the person behind the camera was interested in not only documenting their family but also perfecting their skills in the art of photography.An interesting and vast collection of better than average 1920s photography of a New England family.

Very near fine, images with some occasional fading but overall well-composed and very good or better. Contains 327 gelatin silver images. Various sizes, mostly some variation of 4.25" x 2.75". Mostly captioned in white album ink, some of the cations are rubbed, but they remain largely readable. Album maintained by a young Wisconsin woman documenting her school days, friends and travel. She was likely from Chilton, Wisconsin where the album begins in here later school years in 1917 and 1918 including shots of her girls' basketball team. Additionally there are groups of images from Appleton, Milwaukee, Menomonie, Oconto, Kaukauna, Peshtigo River, and Riverside, Wisconsin, where she traveled to visit relatives. There are a few images in Minnesota and in Escanaba, Michigan where she attended an Evangelist Revival Meeting. Additionally there are a few photos of uniformed men in France from 1918, sent from a school acquaintance or family member. She likely then taught grammar school children in Goodrich, Kansas, where she records images of young students, teachers, and others related to the school. One image near the end of the album is of the eight coffins of the Wolf Family who were murdered in 1920 in Turtle Lake, North Dakota. The image is a snapshot, but is a close variant of the images of the coffins that circulated in newspapers.A generous selection of vernacular photographs of young women that is almost exclusively geographically specific to Wisconsin.

Der aus jüdischer Familie stammende Berliner Maler und Graphiker Lesser Ury brach 1879 eine begonnene kaufmännische Lehre ab, um sich in den 1880er Jahren an verschiedenen Orten und an maßgeblichen Kunstakademien der Zeit auszubilden: Düsseldorf, Paris, Brüssel und schließlich München sind die Stationen, nachdem er 1885 bei der Berliner Kunstakademie eine Ablehnung erfuhr. 1887 kehrte er in seine Heimatstadt zurück und stellte unter anerkennender Kritik erstmals 1889/1890 in der Galerie von Fritz Gurlitt aus. Adolph Menzel (1815-1905) förderte ihn, auch mit Max Liebermann (1847-1935) war Lesser Ury anfangs sehr freundschaftlich verbunden, bis es wenig später zum rivalisierenden Zerwürfnis kam. Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) konnte den Künstler schließlich 1914 an die „Berliner Secession" holen, die Galeristen Paul Cassirer und Heinrich Thannhauser stellten ihn 1916/1917 aus, 1922 zeigte die Secession eine 150 Gemälde umfassende Schau. Das druckgraphische Werk Lesser Urys hatte sich schon um 1920 in Sammlerkreisen seinen Platz erobert.

        Notebook containing an unusual collection of manuscript notes relating to signalling at sea.

      c.1807-1920 - Nineteenth-century landscape octavo notebook (97 × 159 mm), sheep, rope-twist panel in blind to the boards, brass clasp intact. Somewhat rubbed externally, leather on the back joint splitting towards the head structurally sound, contents lightly browned, slightly damping to the last few leaves, else very good. 18 pages with hand-coloured hand-drawn flags, a further 7 uncoloured. Unfortunately without any identifying marks, this intriguing volume contains a combination of naval officer's and scholar's notes on naval signalling, ranging between the early nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The volume opens with five pages of "Explanatory Instructions" which include six pages of the numerary flags, hand-coloured, with their significations, these placing the manuscript in the early years of the nineteenth century. There follow seventy pages offering signals for over 400 instructions, and then a further twenty carrying a "Navy List" of more than 300 Royal Naval ships identified by number, also giving the number of guns. A brief survey of the names included here suggests a date of compilation of around 1807, most revealing perhaps being the inclusion among the late additions of HMS Delight, with a subsequent pencilled note "lost", which must refer to the 6-gun brig-sloop launched in 1806, and captured by the French just two years later, when she became stranded off Calabria. There are then thirty pages dedicated to single word telegraphic codes, which seems to run out of steam at "R", with a few additional significations pencilled in. The next group of notes was added at a later period being described as "Marryatt's [sic.] Signals in the Navy and Merchant Service 1868", and including fourteen pages of coloured flags, covering "Boat Signals", "Distinguishing Pennants for Boats", together with three pages of signals for compass bearings rendered in monochrome; these followed by six pages of coloured flags with alphabetical codes for British Merchant Vessels, British Ships of War, French ships of War, Italian Men-of-War, American Commercial Code, and Russian Ships of War. A single page note on Nelson's Trafalgar signal from around 1900, is followed by two rather scruffy pages of "Semaphore Signals (used by Boy Scouts), 1911", and eleven on "USA Weather Signals", apparently derived from Hammond's Atlas of the World, 1914, and including a number of roughly drawn flags, and with some notes dated through to 1920. The last entry in the volume is a four page transcription of Sir Sidney Smith's "Memorandum" of the loss of Ajax in the Dardanelles Operation of 1807, which may suggest that the original owner accompanied the squadron in the Straits. An attractive and intriguing gallimaufry of signal material.

      Paris. Emile - Paul Brothers. 1920. 8vo., original black wrappers with rafia netting and paper label. With illustration by André Lhote. A little light spotting and browning, otherwise a very good copy, preserved in custom-made chenise and slipcase. First edition, Copy "B" of only nine lettered copies printed on India paper with two extra suites of the engravings, one in black and one in blue, from a total edition of 776 copies. Although printed in Paris the text is in English. André Lhote (5 July 1885 - 24 January 1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also very active and influential as a teacher and writer on art.
