Quarto measuring 11.5" x 10". 59pp. Contemporary black binder with a red and yellow "Al Martin Agency" flyer slide into the front cover pocket, with ephemera from the 1920s to the late 1950s. Small tears and chips thus near fine and near fine photographs with some small tears at the corners. A scrapbook filled with different pictures and written articles about aerial performers doing their acts at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts for the Al Martin Agency, during the mid to late 1950s as well as earlier pictures from the 1920s and 1930s of aerial performers and animal acts. Contains 32 gelatin silver sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 10" x 8" to 9.5" x 7.5", as well as flyers, printed articles, and typed press releases. The photographs depict different aerial performance groups posed together as well as their performances mid-air. Smiles and looks of excitement can be seen on the faces of the performers even in the photographs of them jumping, swinging, and twirling through the air. Most of the flyers are from the 1950s while the photographs are from the 1920s through to the 1930s which include the larger group photos of the aerial performers. One photograph catches a female performer almost horizontal with the board she's jumped from and another depicts two performers high up in the sky swinging on high-poles. Aside from the traditional acrobatic photos there are a couple of other acts: a man in cannon, Gee Gee Engesser on a sled with her arctic wolves, "The Alaskans," pulling her along, and the Brick Brothers with their monkey, Mr. Murphy. Several of the photographs are Inscribed to Alfred Martin from various people like Jack and Chuck Brick, Marilyn Steele, Gee Gee Engesser, the entire Val Jean Lake Orchestra, and other groups of performers. Several pictures feature animals acts like pigs climbing stairs and sliding down a slide and seals doing tricks for fresh fish. There is also a couple flyers for the Brick Brothers and their "Trampolene(sic) Monkey," Mr. Murphy. Some of the flyers are printed by Al Martin and feature the logo, location of the hotel, a picture of the act, and a small description of the performers. One description reads, "A gorgeous night spectacle as well as daytime thriller, climaxed with fireworks". While the performers pictures are in black and white, the flyer's illustrations are done in single bright colors such as oranges, purples, and blues. The last few pages of the scrapbook are press releases written by Alfred Martin about the different aerial performers. Each is about a page long with a short description of where the performers are from and the type of act they do. The performers written about include The Rooneys, Sensational Ortons, Aerial Charltons, and The Stardusters.An interesting look back at the amazing aerial performers and other circus acts that would come to act at the Bradford Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts during the 1920s through to the late 1950s. .

      London: William Heinemann, 1920. Signed limited deluxe edition. Quarto, original half vellum over cream boards, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. One of 625 numbered copies signed by the illustrator Arthur Rackham. Printed on English hand-made paper with an additional color plate. Illustrations: 25 full page silhouettes, comprising 9 in color (frontispiece and 4 double plates)--and 16 in black (including 4 double illustrations); one mounted colored plate; silhouette head- and tail-pieces and other silhouettes throughout the text, in black. In very good condition. "Rackham's fanciful imagination gave his illustrations instant recognition, and his dedication to illustration kept him in the public eye for 30 years" (Hodnett, 233). Like his Cinderella (1919), The Sleeping Beauty relied "almost wholly for [its] effect on silhouette... Rackham [was] a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humor by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going" (Hamilton, 118).

      [Berlin: Paul Graupe, 1920]. Folio. Portfolio of 34 etchings used for Frank's magnificent illustrated edition of Hamlet (J. Schroder, 1920). Engravings housed in cloth-backed portfolio with marbled paper over boars and stamped title label on the upper cover; light wear to the portfolio; first and last etching a trifle toned from the portfolio else a clean suite. While the book is fairly uncommon, to find a suite of etchings is all the more unusual. There was a smaller edition of 12 Roman numeral copies from a larger limitation that were issued with an additional suite of etchings. It seems likely that this is a waylaid suite. 1 etching pencil-signed by Frank.

A loss of the spine with modest chipping and some tears on the pages, thus good. A collection of photographs and postcards depicting scenes from various places in and around Great Britain including: Gloucestershire, London, Wales, Glendalough, Belfast, and more. Most of the postcards are real photograph post cards featuring vast landscapes and people. One of the post cards shows a large ornate building, "New City Hall, Belfast". Another shows crowds of people walking around on a busy street in London. Many of the postcards are from Valentine & Sons, a printing company that grew to be Scotland's leading manufacturer of picture postcards. Most of their postcards were real photograph cards numbered on the front in hand, which sometimes made the figures illegible. Some of the postcards have also been handpainted. The sepia photographs feature some people at a church, boats, and locations in a forest. An extensive collection of real photograph post cards and pictures circa 1920s. .

        Electrotype and Printing Blocks Featuring the Erotic Artwork of Clara Tice in the 1920s-1930s

      Greenwich Village, New York. [Circa 1920-1930]. A collection of 52 steel and zinc line blocks, halftone blocks, and 50 copper electrotype blocks illustrated by Clara Tice from the 1920s through the 1930s. The blocks measure between 3" x 2.5" and 7" x 5" and are about fine with some oxidation. Nine blocks include Tice's signature and there is one greeting card block with Tice's name engraved into the design. Several of the steel/zinc plates are from Tice's illustrations that appear in "Woman & Puppet: A Spanish Romance", "The Twilight of the Nymphs", "One Hundred Merrie and Delightsome Stories [Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles]", and "Aphrodite". Most were printed privately by the Pierre Louys Society in 1924-1927. The steel/zinc plates are both halftone and line blocks with different details in each, set for a single picture. Many of the pictures have two or three blocks to create the layers of the illustration.The copper electrotype blocks are most likely duplicate blocks and feature a full story of illustrations. Though the illustrations are not found in any book to date, they seem to emulate Clara Tice's illustration style with more detail. Tice lived until 1973, however much of her popular artwork is from the 1920's and 1930s. These blocks could be Tice's work in the later years of her life. The plates are cohesive and follow an erotic story line. Several plates feature interracial lesbians having sex with a French Rococo/Regency Era theme, as well as some with men and women having sex. The illustrations are incredibly erotic, even showing one female masturbating. The copper plates are nailed into the wood blocks and while not dated are most likely pre-1940s as most plates started to be glued down to the blocks in the 1940s. Clara Tice was born in 1888 and was one of the women first to bob her hair, wear short dresses, and roll up her stockings in the 1910-1920s. She was labeled the "Queen of Greenwich Village" and was a prominent Dada artist. She studied with Robert Henri and was featured in the first exhibition of Independent Artists under him. She was close with the Arensberg Circle which included well-known artists and free thinkers from the time such as Walter and Louise Arensberg, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Charles Demuth, and Beatrice Wood. Tice was known for her erotic illustrations which lead to Anthony Comstock, leader of the New York City's Society for the Suppression of Vice, chastising and trying to take her pictures down at a popular bohemian restaurant named Polly's. Comstock deemed Tice's illustrations to be immoral. This negative experience increased Tice's popularity and her artwork was featured in magazines like Vanity Fair, The Quill, Rogue, Cartoons Magazine, and The New York Times. Much of Tice's book illustrations and artwork were then privately printed by the Pierre Louys Society to avoid censorship. However, despite the provocative nature of her drawings, her most well-known book is the "ABC's of Dogs". An extensive collection of electrotype and printing blocks featuring Clara Tice's pioneering erotic artwork. .

      England 1920 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black pebbled leather over paper boards. Contains 62 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 4" x 6" and 8" x 10", without captions. Near fine photo album with near fine photographs. A collection of amateur photography taken of the English countryside with the people in what appears to be clothing from the 1920s and visible billboard that places them in the East Sussex area of the country. The photographer used soft focus and matte paper reminiscent of the style of early 20th Century photographers such as Edward Steichen and Dorthea Lange. The photos concentrate on the landscape of the British country, with photos of old homes covered in ivy, romantic walkways, and stone bridges. The coast and small waterways are seen here as well as photos of creeks making their way through rock faces, and waves crashing on a rocky beach. A few of the images have human subjects, some posed, such as one of a girl in a bathing costume and swim cap on a rock, while others are candids of people working on a dock or walking down a road. The stonework of old churches is captured here as well as farm animals roaming in fields.A pleasing and artistic collection of images showing the natural beauty of the British country and the skills of an amateur photographer. Original dark blue cloth, spines and front cover lettered in silver, front cover with large silver block of Endurance stuck in ice, publisher's device in blind to rear board, top edge blue. Colour frontispiece and 87 half-tone plates, folding map at the rear. Minor wear to extremities, occasional light foxing, small tear to head of map stub; a very good copy. First edition, third impression of Shackleton's account of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (issued three months after the first impression). "The failure of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition to even reach the Antarctic continent, much less to cross it via the South Pole, has become the great polar success story of the twentieth century" (Books on Ice). Shackleton embarked in 1914 on the Endurance to make the first traverse of the Antarctic continent; a journey of some 1800 miles from sea to sea. But 1915 turned into an unusually icy year in Antarctica; after drifting trapped in the ice for nine months, the Endurance was crushed in the ice on October 27. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts. Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (DNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal, attributing their survival to Shackleton's exceptional leadership qualities. In recent years, this factor has led to the re-interpretation of the book in terms of a leadership and man-management manual, and several influential attempts have been made to distil from the narrative the underlying principles of Shackleton's command in order that they might be applied more widely. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard remarked in Worst Journey in the World; "For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a Winter Journey, Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen; and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time". With the ownership inscription of George E. Cox to the front free endpaper, with an additional note to the half-title, "Lecture 14th February 1920". Cox, a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Star as a result of his bravery aboard a motor torpedo-boat in the South West Pacific in 1942. He and three other officers were interviewed as the basis of W. L. White's 1942 work They Were Expendable, which became the basis of the 1945 film of the same name directed by John Ford and starring Robert Montgomery and John Wayne.

While published in a conventional paper dust jacket this particular copy has apparently been married to a glassine wrapper. However, book and jacket would appear to have been together for quite some time. The glassine wrapper is near fine with a few short edge nicks. A nice copy of an important collection. Lasar Segall (1891-1957) was a Lithuanian born, Brazilian Jewish painter. He studied in Vilna and Berlin where he joined the "Freie Sezession" group, the precursor movement of the German Expressionism. In the mid 1910s he exhibited in Brazil, he was among the earliest artists who presented modern art in the country. Segall was a founding member of "Dresdner Sezession Gruppe" in 1919 with Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmüller, but remained associated with the German Expressionsts. Begun in 1896, and in effect completing the trilogy begun with ALMAYER'S FOLLY and AN OUTCAST OF THE ISLANDS, "THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career almost until the end of his life" [Cagle].~This copy is in the standard (primary) binding, with the spine lettering in gilt, with the front cover border in blind, and with the publisher's device blind-stamped onto the front cover. (There is a secondary, perhaps colonial, binding with black lettering and border, and with no front cover device.)~This is an unusually fine copy (spine gilt a bit brighter than usual for this book); the pictorial jacket, which unlike that of THE ROVER does not often turn up in presentable condition, is nearly fine as well -- with scarcely any soil or wear (just a few tiny nicks in the top edge, to be expected since the jacket stands a bit taller than the volume).       - Paris, Delagrave, 1920-1924. Ten volumes in ten [and an 11th volume, titled "Sa Vie"]. Large 8vo (24.3 x 16.2 cm). Over 4,000 pages. Numerous plates and fine text engravings. Later half tree calf over marbled boards. Spines with five slightly raised bands; compartments rich gilt with entomological vignettes, and red morocco labels with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Top edge red.= The definitive Jean Henri Fabre (1823-1915) and his major work, in fine bindings. "Fabre was a popular teacher, physicist, chemist and botanist. However, he is probably best known for his findings in the field of entomology, the study of insects, and is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. Much of his enduring popularity is due to his marvelous teaching ability and his manner of writing about the lives of insects in biographical form, which he preferred to a clinically detached, journalistic mode of recording. In doing so he combined what he called 'my passion for scientific truth with keen observations and an engaging, colloquial style of writing'. His Souvenirs Entomologiques is a series of texts on insects and arachnids. He influenced the later writings of Charles Darwin, who called Fabre 'an inimitable observer'. Fabre, however, was a Christian who remained sceptical about Darwin's theory of evolution, as he always held back from all theories and systems. His special force was exact and detailed observation, field research, always avoiding general conclusions from his observations, which he considered premature" (Wikipedia). Added, in a near-matching binding (only the spine bands are slightly more pronounced, and the compartments plain) "La vie de J.-H. Fabre. Naturaliste. Suivie du répertoire général analytique des Souvenirs Entomologiques par le Dr. G.-V. Legros". This work, published in 1924, also by Delagrave, has a preface by Fabre himself, and his portrait. It was published by the Delagrave in the same year as the last volume of the "Souvenirs", and is bound with the original pictorial wrappers included. It contains xv + 439 pp., and 16 tissue-guarded, mostly photographic plates. Uncut. Fore edges somewhat spotted, otherwise clean. A very nice ensemble in excellent condition. Not in Nissen. First edition, second issue. - Includes chapters on the advent of Islam on the Gulf coast, the Portuguese era in Eastern Arabia, the Al-Bu-Said dynasty, a history of commerce in the Gulf, a description of the country and the pearl fisheries, as well as a chapter on the tribes of the Gulf, with an entry on the Al-Kowasim ("a powerful Maadic tribe occupying the sea ports on the Pirate coast") as well as on Beni Yas and their towns, "Abu Thabi and Debaye". - The author’s first appointment in Arabia was as Resident at Aden in 1867; he was later made Agent and Consul at Muscat before being promoted Consul General, first at Bagdad then at Zanzibar. This work was published posthumously by his widow from a remarkable archive of notes, "many of which were jotted down on odd bits of paper as he [Miles] rode through the desert on his camel". The book remains an authority on Omani history and provides a storehouse of knowledge for any reader interested in the Arabian Gulf. - Backs a little faded, with two small holes repaired. The final two lines of text on the title page have been removed by a previous owner; they would have included the note "Reprinted 1920", confirming the copy as part of the second issue. An extremely uncommon and desirable work. Rare, only two copies at auction within the last decades (the Peter Hopkirk copy, Sotheby's, 14 Oct. 1998, lot 989: £10,000). Diba, p. 45; cf. Original photo-illustrated card wrappers; pp. 159, [1], 8 b/w photo plates; ex-libris the National Art Library, V&A, with its neat de-accession stamp to the foot of the verso of the front wrapper; closed tear to the foot of p. 39, expertly repaired, light embrowning to the fore-edges, very light scattered spotting to the wrappers and the first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy. Provenance: "Austin Desmond" in pencil to inside of front cover, possibly the London 20th century art dealer. First edition. Published in the wake of the First International Dada Fair in Berlin, this was the first anthology of Dadaist writing and contains contributions by such important authors as Tristan Tzara, Hugo Ball and Hans Arp. It includes theoretical writing, poetry, polemic and flashes of unclassifiable brilliance. Huelsenbeck himself was one of the founding spirits of Dada, having worked with Ball in Berlin during the Great War organising pacifist meetings and readings of 'Negro' poetry, much to the shock of the local population. Huelsenbeck's own poetry was generally anti-war, anti-literature and very much pro-drums, whistles and loud noises. Despite this artistic background, and his place in compiling this highly important collection of avant garde writing, Huelsenbeck ended his career practising as a psychiatrist in Long Island under the name of Charles R.         Autograph letters to Professor Donald Robertson.

      Cambridge: , 1920-36. 11 autograph letters, all signed, most one page but some two or three in length. Excellent condition. An exceptional collection of autograph letters signed from poet and classicist A. E. Housman (1859-1936) to Donald Struan Robertson (1885-1961 - a stellar Greek scholar attached to Trinity College, Cambridge, from his undergraduate days until his death) and his wife. He was particularly respected for his work on Apuleius, and was Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge from 1928 until 1950. Housman, as Kennedy Professor of Latin (the most senior Latin chair at Cambridge) from 1911 until his death, was Robertson's counterpart. As such this correspondence shows us Housman the classicist in long-term correspondence with one of his closest Cambridge peers, and has many flashes of sardonic humour. The collection closes rather poignantly with a letter in shaky pencil hand from the Cambridge nursing home in the month of Housman's death. 1. I have marked such misprints and false accents as I have noticed, and have also marked or indicated a good many other mistakes." Trinity College, Cambridge. 9 October 1931. 3pp. Lengthy and sardonic letter about the trouble of preparing lectures for students who "will require so much preliminary matter, not only about rival theories of Ueberlieferungsgeschichte [the history of tradition] but about prosody and Iambenkurzung [iambic abbreviation] and hiatus, without which there can be no critical study, and which they cannot learn from Lindsay without at the same time being bamboozled". He then complains that he is forced to stay in College during the summer "and so to brim with bitterness one of the few and evil years remaining to me on this side of the seventh circle of the inferno, which apparently is where scholars go, and where Musetus will find great fault with my Latin style." 7.       Archive of original artwork, objects, printed books, and ephemera collected by Louis Laun (1920-2010), Yale class of 1942 and member of Scroll and Key. At Yale, Laun was editor of the Yale Record. He later established the Louis F. Laun Award, presented to a graduating Economics major with an outstanding course record in all courses taken in Yale College during the first seven terms. Upon graduation, Laun joined the Marine Corps and served with the Fifth Division on Iwo Jima, where he was decorated with the Bronze Star for bravery. Mr. Laun worked in the textile industry for 25 years. He was Assistant to the President of Bates Manufacturing Company in Lewiston, Maine and later President of Celanese Fibers Marketing Company. In 1973, he moved to Washington, D.C. to be appointed Deputy Administrator of the Small Business Administration, where he served for 4 years. From 1977-1986, he was President of the American Paper Institute in New York City. He returned to Washington as Assistant Secretary of Commerce in charge of International Economic Policy until 1989. He was a member of the Helsinki Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe from 1988-89. Comprising: Original Artwork Guidi. Oblong quarto, illustrated card wrappers (light marks and corner wear), string bound, 47 pp, illustrated throughout with colour plates, including a delightful Australian plate of a kangaroo and British lion fighting over the Ashes, an urn which Alice is holding tightly; contents very clean and sound. This scarce publication was commissioned by the North Eastern Railway to accompany an advertising campaign which promoted the resorts in the North East of England using characters from Lewis Carroll's popular books. Charming juvenilia with Australian content. Five copies recorded in Australian collections (National Library of Australia; State Library of New South Wales; State Library of South Australia; Monash University Library; MCC Library).

Quarto, gilt-lettered cloth with pictorial onlay (slightly dulled to spine and rubbed lower edge), decorated endpapers, black and white illustrations, 8 magnificent colour plates. A fine copy. A superior copy of this book of fairy tales with illustrations done by Sterrett at the age of 19. This was her first commissioned work. In 1931, at the age of 31, Sterrett died from tuberculosis.

Thirteen large decorative initials (including repeats) printed in black and turquoise. Title printed in black and turquoise. Publisher's white buckram, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt and dark turquoise with a design by Alastair, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Small circular bookplate on rear paste-down. Spine very slightly darkened, but the gilt and blue design on front cover quite fresh. A near fine copy. "The publication of The Sphinx in 1920 signalled the start of Alastair's decade of fame. The book had been planned before the war. The illustrations had been printed in Belgium and stored in London during the war years: as a note in the book pointed out... First published by John Lane in 1894, this was originally a youthful poem, later revised. An invocation to the Sphinx, the 'exquisite grotesque! half woman and half animal!', it brought in a multiplicity of Egyptian echoes in its heightened language." (Victor Arwas. His drawings were inspired by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, and combines his elegant skill with his fascination of the perverse, sinister, and satanic. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900). Oscar Wilde's poem "The Sphinx" depicts a sexually voracious monster - the legendary Sphinx, who, in Wilde's work, has been the lover of many classical figures, among them Ammon, the god Amenalk, the gryphon, and the Tragelaphos (a goat-stag monster of myth). Throughout the poem Wilde makes references to figures of legend.

Beyond the softness of style and inventiveness, the most striking thing about the colour plates for Irish Fairy Tales is the felicitous and appropriate use of celtic borders" (Gettings, p. 143)."Rackham's books for the English market in the early post-war years included Flora Annie Steel's English Fairy Tales Retold (1918)? and his friend James Stephen's collection of Irish Fairy Tales? In the latter book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's haunting of him was justified. The Dublin Independent was particularly warm in welcoming the collection, remarking: 'We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarised us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming."       Praze (Prague), Aventinum, 1920. Bound in a contemporary green half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding a bit simple, but fine. Internally very nice and clean. Scarce first edition of the seminal work that coined the term "robot", introduced it to the English language - and all other languages - and to science fiction. The work constitutes a cornerstone of 20th century literature and a landmark work of science fiction. The work was first published, as it is here, in Prague, 1920, in the original Czech, bearing the English subtitle "Rossum's Universal Robots". The play premiered on January 25 1921 and became an immediate success. By 1923, it had been translated into thirty languages. The work was hugely influential from the very beginning, and today science fiction is scarcely imaginable without this groundbreaking work. Introducing the word "robot", Capek displaced older words such as "automaton" or "android" in languages around the world. The word is derived from the Czech "robota", which means forced labour of the kind that serfs had to perform on their masters' lands - "robota" again is derived from the Czech word "rab", which mean "slave". The name "Rossum" is an allusion to the Czech word "rozum", which means "reason", "wisdom", "intellect" or the like. In "R.U.R" a scientist discovers the secret of creating humanlike machines that are more precise and reliable than human beings, and a factory is set up, making these artificial people - robots - from synthetic organic matter. The robots are not made of metal, but of living flesh and blood and resemble the modern ideas of robots and clones more than mechanical "items". They are still, assembled, however, and not born or grown. Capek's robots may be mistaken for humans and can think for themselves. In the beginning, the robots seem happy to work for humans, but a robot rebellion leads to machines dominating the human race and threatening it with extinction.The play was translated from Czech into English by Paul Selver and adapted for the English stage by Nigel Playfair in 1923. The American première was at the Garrick Theatre in New York City in October 1922, where it ran for 184 performances, a production in which Spencer Tracy and Pat O'Brien played robots in their Broadway debuts. It also played in Chicago and Los Angeles during 1923.
