[Archive]: Letters from a Female Philanthropist to Louis Wiley at the New York Times

New York, 1920. Near Fine. An archive of 12 typed letters signed and 2 handwritten notes from philanthropist Ann Morgan to New York Times business manager, Louis Wiley between 1913 and 1920. All letters fine.A small archive of letters written by philanthropist Ann Morgan to Louis Wiley, the business manager of the New York Times between 1913 and 1920. Many of the letters are written thanking Wiley for helping Ann with advertisements and articles written about the numerous charitable organizations she was involved in. Other notes include politely declining invitations to dinner and thanking Wiley for gifts such as tickets to shows. Two of the letters discuss the work of Isobel Hapgood who was interested in translating Russian for the New York Times and whose translation work Ann Morgan was fond of and whom Morgan was advocating for. In a letter dated February 11, 1915, Morgan writes, "Old Miss Isabel Hapgood who, like many of the rest of us, is suffering from an accumulation of too much gray hair, is very anxious to do some Russian work through the Times....her translations are astonishing and her interest, love, and knowledge of Russia are certainly sincere." A letter from December of 1913 mentions the S.P.U.G. movement or the Society for the Prevention of Useless Giving. She writes, "the account of a week ago Sunday on the S.P.U.G. was obviously the best we have had in any paper, and has already done us untold good."Ann Morgan was an American philanthropist and socialite who was the daughter of J.P. Morgan. She was heavily involved in aid relief in France during the First World War which led to her being the "first American woman appointed a commander of the French Legion of Honor" in 1932. She was also an activist for unions and created organizations such as S.P.U.G. and the American Friends of France during World War I. She was also involved in the arts and helped fund Cole Porter's first Broadway musical. Louis Wiley, esquire was the business manager of the New York Times for over 50 years.A modest but interesting collection of letters from an important female philanthropist.

        The Age of Innocence

The Age of Innocence - Edith Wharton (1st Edition, 1st Printing 1920 Hardcover)*Please Note: In mid 2016, this book had minor work performed to mend a 1-inch detached tear at the spine head exposing the top of the textblock signatures that the previous owner attempted to mend or keep intact with scotch tape, all of which was removed and repaired. Some edge wear and nicks on the hardcovers were also touched up. The repair work was performed by Eidolon House, a notable bindery, to merely conserve the book and not fully restore it.*A true 1st edition, 1st printing! Copyright 1920, published by Appleton and Company (New York). First printing with a (1) at the bottom of page 365 and page 186, line 7 reads "Forasmuch as it hath please Almighty God," with later printings having been changed to "Dearly beloved, we are gathered together here." No dust jacket is available. Deep red hardcovers have lightly bumped corners and edges, with only minor wear-through on the foreedge corners. A previous 1" x 1/2" fade on the front cover from a previous sticker was touched up during repair. There is minimal fading and nicks on the spine and wear to the hinges. The front pastedown has a ripple or thin-line bubble that resonates a wrinkle from the first page through page 25. The textblock has some smudges (primarily the foreedge) and light foxing. There was a nick to the top of the textblock that left nicks on the top of pages 339 to 365. Although the pages are lightly tanning, the binding is tight. A few pages have foxing at the corners and page 43-44 has a dog-ear, but there is no writing or markings in the book. Overall, this true first printing of this Pulitzer Prize winning classic is in Very Good Plus (VG+) condition. Please see the photos on this item or feel free to send us any questions you might have. We can send photos of the book before the work was done if desired. Also, we've included photos but if you need more, please contact us.         [MAYAKOVSKY INTRODUCES A NEW ART FORM] Teatral'naia prodagitatsia Vypusk 1 [i e Theatrical Food Agitation First Issue]

[Moscow]: Gosizdat, 1920. 38, [2] pp.: ill. 26,5х17,5 cm. In original printed wrappers. Wrappers detached from the text block, loss of the staple, small tears and losses of the wrappers and extremities of a few pages, horizontal crease, wrappers is rubbed and soiled. Otherwise a good copy. First and only issue. Very rare. An interesting episode of the Civil War: Mayakovsky, inspired by work in ROSTa, decides to combine bright images of the posters with simple agit-theatre performances for the peasants accompanied by balalaika. For that purpose the poem "Vsem Titam i Vlasam RSFSR" (pp. 29-32) [i.e. To All Titi and Vlases of RSFSR] was written (first appeared in this issue). Two lubok illustrations are most likely to be by Mayakovsky as well. The poem was created in August of 1920 for the food agitation campaign. In the summer of 1920, when a crop failure was revealed in the central provinces and the Volga region, the party and the Soviet government outlined a number of measures for mobilizing available grain stocks in productive areas. The ROSTA artistic collective, always responding to all political events, received a special assignment for this campaign, and Mayakovsky, at a meeting of the Political Prospector of the People's Commissariat on August 26, 1920, reporting on ROSTA's participation in the campaign, proposed the use of the form for the theatrical performance for sale and read the first 'play' (actually a poem) intended for this purpose. The poem is accompanied with a director's note "To be performed under a balalaika or accordion by rayok. Next to rayok flipping chart with caricatures should be demonstrated" and two black and white lubok agitation posters illustrating the plot of the poem. The edition itself is a collection of methodical materials and texts of theater productions for the peasants in favor of prodrazviorstka. Other two illustrations include examples of set designs for these productions. Mayakovsky's proposal was implemented. The theater department of the People's Commissariat for Education worked out a broad plan for involving professional and amateur theaters in selling the campaign, in the center were organized special selling groups that went to places, in the village, peasant amateur circles were mobilized. Worldcat locates a copy in NYPL.

HAMLET: PRINCE OF DENMARK (Portfolio of 34 Etchings)

[Berlin: Paul Graupe, 1920] - Portfolio of 34 etchings used for Frank's magnificent illustrated edition of Hamlet (J. Schroder, 1920). Engravings housed in cloth-backed portfolio with marbled paper over boars and stamped title label on the upper cover; light wear to the portfolio; first and last etching a trifle toned from the portfolio else a clean suite. While the book is fairly uncommon, to find a suite of etchings is all the more unusual. There was a smaller edition of 12 Roman numeral copies from a larger limitation that were issued with an additional suite of etchings. It seems likely that this is a waylaid suite. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Collection of 18 beautiful advertising mailers for men's clothing made by J. L. Taylor, a subsidiary of the International Tailoring Company

Chicago and New York: [J. L. Taylor], 1920. Unbound. Very good. These colorful advertising mailers range in size from 4" x 6.5" folded to 13.25" x 14.25" unfolded. All are tri-folds, leporellos, posters, or pamphlets. Many have die-cuts, lift-the-flaps, cut-outs, etc. All have gone through the mail; most are franked with 1-cent green Franklin stamps (in use from 1908-1922) with Chicago or New York City pre-cancels. Minor wear. The J. L. Taylor - International Tailoring Company was a large men's clothing supplier in the early 1900s with major offices and production facilities in Chicago and New York. The company did not sell directly to customers. Instead, it provided department stores and tailors with large swatch/sample books. After customers picked out styles and fabrics, on-site tailors would take measurements and forward them to the company where the clothing was made. The company provided its retailers with elaborate pre-cancelled advertisements to mail to their local customers. Both of the International Tailoring Company buildings are still standing. The ten-story Chicago headquarters/factory on Jackson Boulevard (also known as the White Tower Building) was a a truly remarkable facility when it opened in 1916. Instead of the usual dark, dirty, cramped and unsafe sweatshops where most clothes were made, the building was clean, spacious, safe, and brightly illuminated with natural lighting. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 . Today the building is shared by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and "The Tailor at Jackson" condominium complex. The New York on 4th Avenue has also been coverted into residential condos. This is a terrific collection of cutting-edge, early 20th century men's fashion advertising. As of 2017, nothing similar is listed in OCLC, and there are no auction records at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. This is onlu one, single advertising mailer currently for sale in the trade.
