        The Fairy Walk

1920. A Wonderfully Ethereal Watercolor from the Master of Children's Fantasy IllustratorsTIMLIN, William M. "The Fairy Walk." Original pen, ink and watercolor drawing, titled on lower left hand corner, signed on lower right hand corner and marked with Timlin's owl device. Image size: 20 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches: 525 x 320mm.Matted, framed and glazed.William M. Timlin ranks alongside Dulac, Rackam, and Pogany as one of the greatest children's fantasy illustrators, despite his having published only one book in his lifetime (The Ship that Sailed to Mars, 1923). He died before his second great work, The Building of a Fairy City could be completed. The Fairy Walk depicts an elegant young lady in conversation with an ethereal figure sitting on a fence and holding onto a branch of a tree, observed by four ravens and a trio of mischievous looking goblins. It is quite possible that this drawing is a finished watercolor for The Building of a Fairy City. It is beautifully executed and very large, drawn with finesse and detail, indicative of an important work. Even though this drawing is dated 1920, three years before The Ship that Sailed to Mars was published, Timlin had been working on drawings for The Building of a Fairy City for many years previous to the publication of his first book.William Mitcheson Timlin (11 April 1892 - 1943) was an architect and illustrator. He was born in Ashington, Northumberland, the son of a colliery foreman. He showed talent for drawing at Morpeth Grammar School, and received a scholarship to the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle. In 1912, he joined his parents in South Africa where he completed his training in art and architecture and remained for the rest of his life.Timlin designed a number of important buildings in Kimberley including Kimberly Boys' High School while pursuing his interest in art, turning out a large number of watercolour fantasies in addition to oils, pastels, etchings and periodical illustrations. His work was regularly exhibited. He also wrote stories and composed music.Timlin worked on The Ship that Sailed to Mars for two years. It was started as a diversion for his son in 1921. The work expanded until in its final form it had 48 pages of text and 48 color plates showing remarkable flights of fantasy. Timlin sent the book to publishers George Harrap, who were delighted with the illustrations and the calligraphic text, deciding to print it without typesetting. The book has since become a fantasy classic. The film rights to the book were purchased in the United States, where Timlin enjoyed great popularity. Alan Horne in The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators describes the book as a masterpiece and "the most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s."Timlin illustrated many South African travel books and prepared illustrations for a book titled The Building of a Fairy City which was never published. He died in Kimberley, Northern Cape in 1943.

Constitution and Book of Laws, Made for the Government of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Inc., and the African Communities League., of the World.

Pamphlet, 12mo, original printed pale blue wrappers, stapled, 40 pp. Very slight aging; near fine and an exceptional copy. Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was one of the most influential black leaders of the early 20th century. Unlike other black leaders, Garvey felt for blacks to really gain equality they would be better off going back to Africa. He was a strong champion of black separatism, feeling it was the only way to overcome racism, he even went as far as to propose alliance with white power groups, including the Ku Klux Klan (see An Appeal to the Soul of White America...). He felt the ends of the two groups were actually very similar. In 1914 Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association and African Communities League, typically referred to as the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). This organization would probably have close to 75,000 members and would be dedicated to black advancement and uplift. Garvey was inspired by the ideas of Booker T. Washington, especially the notion of black enterprise. This pamphlet presents the by-laws of Garvey's organization, and is very scarce. The OCLC locates only two copies of this printing. While this edition is supposed to follow one published in July 1918, it is not clear if that edition was published. OCLC. ANB. #100979.$1150

1920. 1. (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "Uncle Wiggily's Tricks: Try This With Your Piano" with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily (plus other characters).         "WHERE The WEST BEGINS". Spearfish, South Dakota. 1920 - 1923

Spearfish, S.D.:. 1920 - 1923.. Album: 7" x 10-7/8". Leaf size: 6-3/4" x 10-3/4". 80 pp. First & last blank.. Brown leather album with 8-line poem & image of a Native American standing beside a fire with smoke rising, printed and/or painted on front. ÒSpearfish S. D.Ó printed on rear cover. Brown cord tie.. Modest binding wear. Album - Very Good. Photographs - generally. clear & sharp. Very Good [or better].. The images primarily depict students, faculty and events at the Spearfish State Normal Training School, now Black Hills State University, in Spearfish, South Dakota, as well as geologic attractions in the vicinity. Such attractions include: Lookout Mountain, Spearfish Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls, DevilÕs Tower, Crystal Cave, Ice-Box Canyon, Black Hills, and more. Also featured are the areas of Deadwood and Lead, South Dakota. These photographs were evidently taken by a core group of friends Ð mostly women Ð who took trips into these areas, primarily in the summer of 1920. The town of Spearfish, South Dakota, was surveyed / staked out in 1876, and officially incorporated in 1888. Spearfish State Normal Training School was established in 1883, listed as having had 40 students in 1884. The School was renamed Black Hills Teachers College in 1941 and then officially designated Black Hills State College in 1967, and then University in the 1989. The album's compiler is not explictly stated, but we suspect Verna Stumpf, who is featured in ~ 60 of the photographs. As supporting evidence, we note there was one Verna Stumpf listed as Chemistry teacher on staff in 1921, the time of the photographs. There are also several photographs of the chemistry laboratory in the album. One of the photographs taken in 1923, mentions a Òboss,Ó which would add further weight to the argument that the compiler of the album was on staff of the school, which Verna was by that time. Verna Stumpf is almost always identified as ÒV. StumpfÓ when pictured. As the handwriting differs from that of the captions, and it would seem unlikely Verna herself would have written her own name underneath the relevant photographs, so we presume this was done later. This photograph album a wonderful primary source, offering a unique visual documentary glimpse into the early years of the University & surrounding western South Dakota. . 257 b/w images, size ranging from 2 x 1-1/2" to 6-1/2" x 8-1/2", with the majority either 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" or 3-1/2" x 2-1/2". Many are captioned in white pencil, albeit in 2 different hands.
