SCOTT, Malcolm .H. ["Seven Stars"], 15 (Indian) MT Company, Quetta Baluchistan 1923. 1920's .Fifteen bound volumes of manuscript stories, largely featuring Indian themes, after an initial volume of English stories. Approx 26 cm x 21 cm. with small variations, bound in maroon cloth , titled with several variations of text style in gilt to front boards, numbered by hand in white to the top of each spine. Each volume contains a bookplate for M.H.Scott. Included in volume one are a couple of letters, (pictured) and a typescript identifying the author and listing the stories. These seem to be the authors own record of his work, we think intended for publication. Some stories have the written names of what would seem to be Magazine publications on the last recto ; "Victorian June 1921"," Shamrock", "Flight Febry 1919" "Lamp" (etc) which might suggest submissions to or publication within the magazine in question. Some stories have added illustrations in the form of postcards, clippings, prints, and there are a couple of pieces of original Indian art. The last volume "The Seven Pagodas" is interesting as a travel journal, as it describes visits to Vijaynagar, Daulatabad, Dabhoi, Karli and Bhaja, Goa, Mysore, and lastly a chapter entitled " Lingiyats, Lings, and Legends". One volume has considerable damp staining, but the others are generally Very Good; tidy and easily readable. An interesting collection of Colonial Indian stories which offers further opportunity for research.

        Tulip Album

Bond van Bloembollenhandelaren, Haarlem, The Netherlands - A most unusual and beautiful collection of flower cards. N.d., circa 1920, based on the Art Deco design of the album cover -- the cards could possibly be slightly older. The album contains 32 cards of chromolithographic images of various types of tulips. The cards are each 18 by 14 cm, and the album itself is 30 by 21 cm. The artist is unknown, other than the initials LM that are on some of the cards. While the cards are Dutch in origin, the written content is in English. Each leaf comes with a tissue guard. The album cover, which opens from the bottom, is bowed. Some of the tissue guards are chipped and perhaps a bit brittle. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: Macmillan, 1920. LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of 520 numbered copies SIGNED by illustrator Arthur Rackham. With 16 very fine colour plates and 21 black and white illustrations within the text by Arthur Rackham. Large 4to, in the publisher's original deluxe limited edition binding of vellum backed parchment covered boards, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on both upper cover and spine, t.e.g. Now housed in a fine custom clamshell box of maroon cloth over boards with a morocco label gilt lettered. x, 318 pp. A very fine copy, unusually bright and fresh, the binding clean, the covers and spine much brighter and more clean than is the usual. The textblock in fine order, the plates fresh and very well preserved. An excellent copy. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION, IN THE SIGNED LIMITED FORMAT AND IN A WONDERFUL STATE OF PRESERVATION. Rackham's friend James Stephens wrote his collection of Irish Stories drawing from a rich oral tradition and also from the original Gaelic texts. He succeeded in presenting the old tales in a poetic and accessible form for the general modern reader. The collection is an excellent introduction to traditional Irish Fairy Stories and includes: The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, The Boyhood of Fionn, The Carl of the Drab Coat, Mongan's Frenzy, and many more. Rackham brought forth another collection of dazzling and imaginative illustrations. The Dublin Independent wrote a warm review of Rackham's Irish Fairy Tales: "We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarized us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming."

Map of Sunset Beach. On the Direct Scenic Coast Line of The Pacific Electric Railway. A Perfect Home Beach.

Hall Armitage Co.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Two-color plat map, 14 x 28 inches, multiple folds. Chips and short tears to right lower edge; very good condition. Real estate broadside from the Hall Armitage Company with plat map for development at Sunset Beach, located on the Pacific Electric Railway between Anaheim Landing to the north and Huntington Beach to the south, as shown by the small inset map. The plat map shows lots on either side of Pacific Avenue between Anderson Street and Santa Ana Avenue, the various advantages of the location touted include "Liquor restrictions to be rigidly enforced" with prices "$225 Up." No record of this map was found on WorldCat. The Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern California notes on their website that "Prior to the 1929 depression, there was a movement to build summer cottages along the coast in the vicinity of Sunset Beach; this provided some extra patronage. After the depression this trend halted; when good times returned an excellent paved highway attracted most of the vacationers' business....Drifting sand was a hazard to operation whenever high winds occurred; many times the ties were obscured by sand, and even the rail heads themselves disappeared regularly under the buffeting of the wind. Floods also were a menace; the San Gabriel River and other streams entered the Pacific Ocean under bridges used by this line, and when Southern California suffered one of its wet winters, bridges went out with regularity. This line was definitely an interurban line in character. Schedule speed in the late Twenties was around 30mph, giving this line the status of second-fastest on the entire PE system. Little traffic congestion was experienced as the line was entirely on private way except in Los Angeles and Newport Beach." .

Original painting in gouache and wash with gold highlights on heavy art paper depicting parts of the interior of "The Old Met" in New York at 1411 Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets during a performance, the audience on numerous tiers. Signed "Gropper" at bottom right. Undated, but ca. 1965-66, very close to the date of demolition of "The Old Met" in 1967

508 x 380 mm. (20" x 15"). Unframed. Remnants of paper tape to upper margin of verso. Gropper, a social realist, was a pupil of George Bellows and Robert Henri. He was active in New York as a painter, lithographer, cartoonist, and illustrator. His work is held in New York by both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deeply involved in the radical politics of the 1920s and 30s, Gropper contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. He went on a tour of Soviet Russia with the novelists Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution in 1927. During the second half of the 1930s, he dedicated his art to efforts to raise opposition to fascism in Europe. After visiting Eastern Europe in 1948, he decided to make one painting a year as a memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953. "The Metropolitan Opera said goodbye to its old house on April 16, 1966, with a sentimental gala farewell performance featuring nearly all of the company's current leading artists. The long time Met star soprano Zinka Milanov made her last Met appearance that night and among the many invited guests was soprano Anna Case who had made her debut at the house in 1909. The final performance at the opera house was given not by the Met but the Bolshoi Ballet, which concluded a short run of appearances on May 8, 1966... Despite a campaign to preserve the theater, it failed to obtain landmark status and the old Met was razed in 1967." Wikipedia. The present painting was executed very close to the date of the farewell performance referred to above.

Autograph letter signed ('Albert'), to Michele Besso (1873-1955), announcing the experimental verification of gravitational redshift ( 'Einstein shift').

[Berlin], 6 January, 1920 - 1½ pages (on a correspondence card, 140 x 90 mm), in German, stamped and post-marked, with address panel and return address in Einstein’s autograph, return address signed: (‘Abs[ender]. A. Einstein’). A significant Einstein document. Einstein informs Besso that ‘The displacement of spectral lines is now established with near certainty’. This refers to the experimental confirmation, much disputed, of gravitational redshift, also known as Einstein shift, which was one of three predictions of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity in 1916. Einstein continues ‘The previous negative results for the sun have in fact been explained and corrected in the simplest way through a study by Grebe and Bachem, which will appear very shortly’. In fact, the findings of Grebe and Bachem, who had worked closely with Einstein, were fiercely debated, although their findings were generally accepted much later, and largely proven by the experiments of Pound, Rebka, and Snider, 1959–1965. Gravitational redshift is a relativistic effect, distinct from cosmological redshift, a Doppler effect caused by the expansion of the universe, and discovered by Hubble in 1929. Einstein proposed three tests to determine the validity of general relativity, now known as the ‘classical tests of general relativity’. The first was the perihelion precession of the orbit of Mercury, the second the bending of light by gravitational fields, and the third the gravitational redshift of light. The first was already known, the second was famously observed by Eddington and team during a solar eclipse in 1919. The third was the most difficult. ‘In astrophysics, gravitational redshift or Einstein shift is the process by which electromagnetic radiation originating from a source that is in a gravitational field is reduced in frequency, or redshifted, when observed in a region at a higher gravitational potential. This is a direct result of gravitational time dilation – if one is outside of an isolated gravitational source, the rate at which time passes increases as one moves away from that source. As frequency is inverse of time (specifically, time required for completing one wave oscillation), frequency of the electromagnetic radiation is reduced in an area of higher gravitational potential. There is a corresponding reduction in energy when electromagnetic radiation is red-shifted, as given by Planck’s relation, due to the electromagnetic radiation propagating in opposition to the gravitational gradient. There also exists a corresponding blueshift when electromagnetic radiation propagates from an area of higher gravitational potential to an area of lower gravitational potential. ‘If applied to optical wavelengths, this manifests itself as a change in the colour of visible light as the wavelength of the light is shifted toward the red part of the light spectrum. Since frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional, this is equivalent to saying that the frequency of the light is reduced towards the red part of the light spectrum, giving this phenomenon the name redshift’ (Wikipedia, ‘Gravitational redshift’, Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 8 November 2017, 21:52 UTC, ). In the rest of the letter Einstein puts on hold a projected trip to Switzerland – a proposed conference in Basle has been postponed for political reasons, and Einstein is kept in Berlin by numerous obligations. His mother Pauline is living with him and Elsa ‘in a hopeless condition, which might last for a long time’ [Pauline Einstein died of cancer on 20 February]. He hesitates to bring his family to live in Germany: he is struggling to obtain enough foreign currency to maintain them, but the advantages for them of remaining in Zurich outweigh the difficulties. Near Fine condition; some small tears (less than a centimeter) to the edges of the pages because of the large format and age of the paper, little wrapped cover corners, otherwise very good and clean. In 1918-1919, he studied in the studio of Konrad Mägi and in 1919-1924 in Higher Art School Pallas; he started with studying painting and graphic art, but ended up as a sculptor. Dr. Mabuse was one of the earliest examples of film noir characterization, and remained an obsession with Lang until the end of his film career. Karol Hubert Rostworowski (3 November 1877 - 4 February 1938) was a Polish playwright, poet and musician, born to a family of local gentry.         Constitution and By-Laws of Philadelphia Base Ball Association

Philadelphia: Philadelphia Base Ball Association, 1920. Near Fine. First edition. 16mo. 16pp. Stapled printed green card wrappers. Small stains on the wrappers and a bit of age-toning, else near fine. An interesting artifact. Among the officers listed is Edward Bolden, a Philadelphia postal employee who was later to play an important role in Negro baseball. In this early instance he was on the board of a league of amateur baseball clubs in the Philadelphia area, probably representing the Hilldale team which he helped to found in 1910, and which played other local teams (of both races). The by-laws note that there are separate white and "Colored" divisions in the league, and that the winners in each category would meet in a championship series. Little more can easily be found about this league. We did find one 1923 article in the "Afro-American" newspaper recounting a game in which Hilldale overwhelmed the white all-star team of the league by a score of 9-1.Bolden was later the founding president of the Eastern Colored League in 1923, and in 1924, along with Andrew 'Rube' Foster, he helped organize the Negro World Series, a post-season championship between teams from the Negro National League and the Eastern Colored League. From about 1915 to 1933, Bolden managed the Hilldale Ball Club. He later founded the Philadelphia Stars which won the 1934 Negro National League Championship. Rare. OCLC locates no copies.

Final Report of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief American Expeditionary Forces.

Washington: Government Printing Office,, 1920. Octavo. Publisher's black sand-grained skiver over heavy card presentation binding, title above the War Office Seal blocked in gilt to front cover within thick single gilt rule panel, similar panel to the lower cover; ad personam to Earl Haig, "Field Marshal The Earl Haig" blocked in gilt in the lower right front corner. 16 large, coloured folding maps at the rear. Somewhat dry and a little rubbed particularly at the extremities, front joint a little cracked, consequently slightly open at the title page, text-block lightly toned, but overall very good. First edition of Pershing's official report as C-i-C AEF covering concluding operations in World War I. This copy wholeheartedly inscribed by Pershing to Douglas Haig, who famously he would describe as 'the man who won the war': "To Field Marshal The Earl Haig, In Memory of our service together in the World War, and with sincere and lasting friendship, John J. Pershing, Washington, D.C.". It is difficult to imagine a more meaningful association.

TYPE FACES FOR ADVERTISING: The Specimen Book of Advertising Agencies' Service Company, Creative Typographers.

NY, (1920s). 13 x 15. (ii), 397 pages + 12 subscripted pages. Indexed. Bolted between heavy leather-like boards measuring 14 x 17. Covers unevenly faded; page edges toned. Very good. The specimen has four parts: Standard Types; The New Types; Miscellaneous Types & Initials; Borders, Ornaments, & Rules. Each type face is shown in both a complete alphabet and in text settings. All text concerns printing, layout, or advertising. Many types are shown in very large sizes for display ads. Albert Schiller -- famous for his Type Pictures--was the typographic art director for the AAS. His hand can be seen here in the decorative elements throughout the book. Schiller felt that an appropriate ornament could be found for any type. Each type display is preceded by a decorative leaf; the "New Faces" have type drawings or pictures. The full page dedicated to the artistic use of "rules," although it is page 395, appears first. Typefaces listed as "new" --including Astrée, Bernhard, Broadway, Cochin, Futura, Greco, Lucian, Narcissus, Neuland--were introduced in the 1920s. This oversized, heavy book was undoubtedly intended for office use only. OCLC locates 4 copies.

Rachel: A Play in Three Acts

Boston: The Cornhill Company, [1920]. First edition. Original cloth backed boards with faded gilt to spine and gilt to cover; some fading and fraying to spine; shelf wear to boards; faint dampstain to bottom right corner of front board. Dampstain extends to two front free endpapers; textblock else clean and tight, with no marks affecting the play itself. Gift inscription on the first endpaper from one female activist to another. Octavo collates complete: 96, [8 blank]. A Good copy of this rare play, which has only come to auction three times and is not held by any institutions according to OCLC. Angelina W. Grimke, named after her activist great aunt, made history with her play Rachel. Considered the first play published and produced by an African American woman, and to have an all black case. Rachel was, as a result of this, "the first attempt to use the order to enlighten the American people relating to the lamentable condition of ten millions of Colored citizens in this free republic" (NAACP). First presented in 1916 at the Myrtill Minor Normal School, where Grimke taught English in Washington, DC, the play was soon after produced in New York and Cambridge. The granddaughter of a slave owner and a slave, in addition to being the descendant of one of the earliest and most outspoken intersectional feminists, Grimke was uniquely positioned to critique U.S. race relations at a time when the country sat poised between Emancipation and the Civil Rights Movement. This particular copy's gift inscription speaks to the play's ability to speak to women activists across race and class: "To Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith, A true, unselfish Mother to other Mothers' Daughters and Sons, I give this Book of Three Mothers lovingly and with deep regards. Charlotte L. P. Stearn. San Diego Civic Auditorium, Meeting of S.D. Womens Civic Center. April 27th, 1923." Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith was a Los Angeles businesswoman and philanthropist, best known for establishing one of the earliest chapters of the Girl Scouts in California, and for initiating a scholarship fund under her name for economically disadvantaged college students. An exceptionally scarce and important play, with a special feminist association. Good. Good.
