Map of Sunset Beach. On the Direct Scenic Coast Line of The Pacific Electric Railway. A Perfect Home Beach.

Hall Armitage Co. No date. Ca. 1920. Two-color plat map, 14 x 28 inches, multiple folds. Chips and short tears to right lower edge; very good condition. Real estate broadside from the Hall Armitage Company with plat map for development at Sunset Beach, located on the Pacific Electric Railway between Anaheim Landing to the north and Huntington Beach to the south, as shown by the small inset map. The plat map shows lots on either side of Pacific Avenue between Anderson Street and Santa Ana Avenue, the various advantages of the location touted include "Liquor restrictions to be rigidly enforced" with prices "$225 Up." No record of this map was found on WorldCat. The Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern California notes on their website that "Prior to the 1929 depression, there was a movement to build summer cottages along the coast in the vicinity of Sunset Beach; this provided some extra patronage. After the depression this trend halted; when good times returned an excellent paved highway attracted most of the vacationers' business....Drifting sand was a hazard to operation whenever high winds occurred; many times the ties were obscured by sand, and even the rail heads themselves disappeared regularly under the buffeting of the wind. Floods also were a menace; the San Gabriel River and other streams entered the Pacific Ocean under bridges used by this line, and when Southern California suffered one of its wet winters, bridges went out with regularity. This line was definitely an interurban line in character. Schedule speed in the late Twenties was around 30mph, giving this line the status of second-fastest on the entire PE system. Little traffic congestion was experienced as the line was entirely on private way except in Los Angeles and Newport Beach."

Original painting in gouache and wash with gold highlights on heavy art paper depicting parts of the interior of "The Old Met" in New York at 1411 Broadway between 39th and 40th Streets during a performance, the audience on numerous tiers. Signed "Gropper" at bottom right. Undated, but ca. 1965-66, very close to the date of demolition of "The Old Met" in 1967

508 x 380 mm. (20" x 15"). Unframed. Remnants of paper tape to upper margin of verso. Gropper, a social realist, was a pupil of George Bellows and Robert Henri. He was active in New York as a painter, lithographer, cartoonist, and illustrator. His work is held in New York by both the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Deeply involved in the radical politics of the 1920s and 30s, Gropper contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. He went on a tour of Soviet Russia with the novelists Sinclair Lewis and Theodore Dreiser in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution in 1927. During the second half of the 1930s, he dedicated his art to efforts to raise opposition to fascism in Europe. After visiting Eastern Europe in 1948, he decided to make one painting a year as a memorial to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. Gropper was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1953. "The Metropolitan Opera said goodbye to its old house on April 16, 1966, with a sentimental gala farewell performance featuring nearly all of the company's current leading artists. The long time Met star soprano Zinka Milanov made her last Met appearance that night and among the many invited guests was soprano Anna Case who had made her debut at the house in 1909. The final performance at the opera house was given not by the Met but the Bolshoi Ballet, which concluded a short run of appearances on May 8, 1966... Despite a campaign to preserve the theater, it failed to obtain landmark status and the old Met was razed in 1967." Wikipedia. The present painting was executed very close to the date of the farewell performance referred to above.

Dr. Mabuse der Spieler. [Ullstein-Bücher. Eine Sammlung zeitgenössischer Romane]. First German edition.

Berlin, Berlin, Ullstein, [amerikanisches copyright; die Erstausgabe wurde 1921 gedruckt; auf der ersten Anzeigenseite wird *Die zwei in der Südsee* beworben, das 1922 erschienen ist]. 1920 - Illustrierter Pappband, kl-8°, 249 [3] S.; - Kanten berieben, Kapital etwas beschädigt, Papier gebräunt, Gelenke etwas gelockert/ hard board, small 8vo, 249 pp, 3 np sheets; -worn, crown with little damage, paper browned, hinge slightly shaken. The american copyright is mentioned with 1920; actually the book is printed later; here *Die zwei in der Südsee* published 1922 is advertised. First Edition, preceding all others. One of the most important film sources of the twentieth century, basis for Fritz Lang's 1922 silent masterpiece, Dr. Mabuse the Gambler. Dr. Mabuse was one of the earliest examples of film noir characterization, and remained an obsession with Lang until the end of his film career. Final Report of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief American Expeditionary Forces.

Washington: Government Printing Office,, 1920. Octavo. Publisher's black sand-grained skiver over heavy card presentation binding, title above the War Office Seal blocked in gilt to front cover within thick single gilt rule panel, similar panel to the lower cover; ad personam to Earl Haig, "Field Marshal The Earl Haig" blocked in gilt in the lower right front corner. 16 large, coloured folding maps at the rear. Somewhat dry and a little rubbed particularly at the extremities, front joint a little cracked, consequently slightly open at the title page, text-block lightly toned, but overall very good. First edition of Pershing's official report as C-i-C AEF covering concluding operations in World War I. Pershing, Washington, D.C.". It is difficult to imagine a more meaningful association.

TYPE FACES FOR ADVERTISING: The Specimen Book of Advertising Agencies' Service Company, Creative Typographers.

NY, (1920s). 13 x 15. (ii), 397 pages + 12 subscripted pages. Indexed. Bolted between heavy leather-like boards measuring 14 x 17. Covers unevenly faded; page edges toned. Very good. The specimen has four parts: Standard Types; The New Types; Miscellaneous Types & Initials; Borders, Ornaments, & Rules. Each type face is shown in both a complete alphabet and in text settings. All text concerns printing, layout, or advertising. Many types are shown in very large sizes for display ads. Albert Schiller -- famous for his Type Pictures--was the typographic art director for the AAS. His hand can be seen here in the decorative elements throughout the book. Schiller felt that an appropriate ornament could be found for any type. Each type display is preceded by a decorative leaf; the "New Faces" have type drawings or pictures. The full page dedicated to the artistic use of "rules," although it is page 395, appears first. Typefaces listed as "new" --including Astrée, Bernhard, Broadway, Cochin, Futura, Greco, Lucian, Narcissus, Neuland--were introduced in the 1920s. This oversized, heavy book was undoubtedly intended for office use only. OCLC locates 4 copies.

Rachel: A Play in Three Acts

Boston: The Cornhill Company, [1920]. First edition. Original cloth backed boards with faded gilt to spine and gilt to cover; some fading and fraying to spine; shelf wear to boards; faint dampstain to bottom right corner of front board. Dampstain extends to two front free endpapers; textblock else clean and tight, with no marks affecting the play itself. Gift inscription on the first endpaper from one female activist to another. Octavo collates complete: 96, [8 blank]. A Good copy of this rare play, which has only come to auction three times and is not held by any institutions according to OCLC. Angelina W. Grimke, named after her activist great aunt, made history with her play Rachel. Considered the first play published and produced by an African American woman, and to have an all black case. Rachel was, as a result of this, "the first attempt to use the order to enlighten the American people relating to the lamentable condition of ten millions of Colored citizens in this free republic" (NAACP). First presented in 1916 at the Myrtill Minor Normal School, where Grimke taught English in Washington, DC, the play was soon after produced in New York and Cambridge. The granddaughter of a slave owner and a slave, in addition to being the descendant of one of the earliest and most outspoken intersectional feminists, Grimke was uniquely positioned to critique U.S. race relations at a time when the country sat poised between Emancipation and the Civil Rights Movement. This particular copy's gift inscription speaks to the play's ability to speak to women activists across race and class: "To Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith, A true, unselfish Mother to other Mothers' Daughters and Sons, I give this Book of Three Mothers lovingly and with deep regards. Charlotte L. P. Stearn. San Diego Civic Auditorium, Meeting of S.D. Womens Civic Center. April 27th, 1923." Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith was a Los Angeles businesswoman and philanthropist, best known for establishing one of the earliest chapters of the Girl Scouts in California, and for initiating a scholarship fund under her name for economically disadvantaged college students. An exceptionally scarce and important play, with a special feminist association. Good. Good.

California 1920 - Oblong small octavo measuring 4.5" x 6.5". String-tied tan leather with handmade decorations. Contains 89 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.25" and 2.5" x 3.5" with captions. Very good photo album with chips, tears, and loose pages with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a young woman in California between 1914 and 1920. Throughout the album the Saniter and Knight families are pictured at family homes and farms and in a variety of amateur portraits, although it is not clear which woman kept the album. The woman attended San Diego High School and documented her time there and her leisure time spent with girlfriends. These photos show "Ditch Day" and a group of young women climbing oil wells. They also show the high school itself as well as horseback riding and posing around the campus. The family also visited the beaches, rivers, and gardens of the area throughout the six years of photographs. The San Diego River is pictured here as well as Mission Cliff Gardens and Mission Valley. Interspersed throughout the album are five complete photo strips as well as some small pictures with have been separated from their original strips. These show women posing and smiling showing off new hairdos and hats. Another photo shows a group of people feigning terror as another friend jokingly holds them at gunpoint. One photo shows photos from "Amy's graduation party" with a group of girls smiling for the camera. The album ends with a photo of four women from the Knight family posing in a family garden. An interesting collection of amateur photography documenting a young California girl in the early part of the 1900s.

Dr. Mabuse der Spieler. [Ullstein-Bücher. Eine Sammlung zeitgenössischer Romane]. First German edition.

Illustrierter Pappband, kl-8, 249 [3] S. - Kanten berieben, Kapital etwas beschädigt, Papier gebräunt, Gelenke etwas gelockert/ hard board, small 8vo, 249 pp, 3 np sheets -worn, crown with little damage, paper browned, hinge slightly shaken. The american copyright is mentioned with 1920 actually the book is printed later here *Die zwei in der Südsee* published 1922 is advertised. Katastroofid : 1919-1920 (Catastrophes : 1919-1920) [Poetry Collection]

Auringo, Tallinn 1920 - Estonian language. Octavo 15 x 23 cm. Weight 80 gr. Wrappers, 63 [1] pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Small creases across cover corners, repaired upper right corner of front cover (minor corner missing piece was replaced with triangle paper from the inner side), right and bottom edge of front cover show very slight fraying; internally perfect unread copy with uncut pages. The third collection of verses relates to author's early Expressionist period of creation, and poems included here imbued with sensuality and enjoyment glorification, which had broken existing traditions and morality of literature. In modernist urban descriptions the problem of the poor and the rich is raised by author. He depicts cities in the daytime and at night: the first is connected with working class people, the factory proletariat, and the latter with prostitutes, buying and selling human beings. Catastrophic descriptions of the world's disgust and rebellion sound very vividly. The impending global Catastrophe passes through the verses. Author shows his protesting, militant, active attitude, a wish for a better time and era, created by the class of the poor. The position of Johannes Vares-Barbarus (1890–1946) in Estonian history and culture is contradictory. On the one hand, he was a remarkable doctor of the name of Vares, on the other hand, a poet named Barbarus, whose modernistic poems were not always appreciated. Moreover, in the 1940s he was one of the leading figures in the Sovietization of Estonia. That's why his figure and poetry having received so much attention. He published fourteen collections of verse, which style varied greatly during his career. After neo-romanist debut, followed expressionist verses, which gradually gave way to the avant-garde collections Geomeetriline inimene (The Geometrical Man, 1924) and Multiplitseerit inimene(Multiplied Man, 1927) followed the trends of French modernism and cubism and considered his best works. From then on poetry took more realistic turn, antibourgeois attitudes and leftist views became increasingly evident. After the fall of the bourgeois regime in Estonia he became president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR (1940-46). Afraid of the NKVD, he committed suicide in 1946. Constructivist graphic cover design of the book created by Aleksander Mülber (1897-1931). Unique and talented artist of Ants Laikmaa Atelier School, during his study he created paintings in national romanticism style, later turned to Expressionism. Finally cultivated more rationalist, playful form of expressionism identified as cubo-futurism. Today little remains of his artworks. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Portugiesische Briefe. Die Briefe der Marianna Alcoforado, übertragen von R. M. Rilke. Nachwort von F. Bergemann. 21.-25. Tausend (= Insel-Bücherei, Nr. 74).

Insel ohne Jahr [1920], Leipzig - 49 S., 1 Blatt. Orig.-Pappband. [Probably Istanbul or Ankara, Turkey, late s or 1930s]. 1920 - Lithography on thinner paper 4 x 55 cm (soft folds with small loss of image in the folds, old repaired tears verso, slightly-age toned and water stained, otherwise in a good condition). A fascinating, extremely rare Turkish 20th century map by a military historian Hakki Tümerdem shows the development of the Battle of Dumlup?nar, the last battle in the Greco-Turkish War in 1922. - A magnificent map in Turkish language shows the development of the Battle of Dumlup?nar, fought from August 26 to August 30 1922, between the Turkish Army and the Greek Army of Asia Minor. It was also called Field Battle of the Commander-in-Chief or Dumlup?nar (Meydan) Muharebesi or Ba?kumandanl?k Meydan Muharebesi in Turkish. The blue lines represent Greek troops and red lines the Turkish ones. The battle, which was the last battle in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), as part of the Turkish War of Independence, forced the Greeks to leave Anatolia by mid September. The Armistice of Mudanya was signed by Turkey, Italy, France and Great Britain on 11 October 1922. The map was made by an author and a teacher of military history (harp tarihi muallimi) Hakki Tu?merdem. Tu?merdem was an author of several books on Turkish military history, published mostly in 1930s. We could not trace any other examples of the map on the market nor in institutions worldwide.

[Archive]: 24 Photographs Mounted on Boards from China, Trinidad, Jamaica, Ceylon, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Japan, prepared for the Museum of Philadelphia

Philadelphia: Philadelphia Museums, 1920. Very Good. An archive of 24 larger black and white gelatin silver photographs mounted to cardboard. The photos all measure around 7" x 9" mounted on 10" x 12" boards with stamped captions on the front and a printed description on the verso. All boards are slightly bowed with edgewear thus very good with near fine photographs.A collection of photographs taken for the Museum of Philadelphia with "The Philadelphia Museums" stamped on the corner of each board. They were collected in the 1920s from a number of different countries including China, Trinidad, Jamaica, Ceylon, Philippines, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Japan, which is the most heavily featured here with nine photographs. The photos were then used as part of the Museum's mission to discover new ways of instructing students and museum-goers on the various cultures of the world. These photographs focus on the raw and manufactured materials which are critical to the economy of each of the countries and the people who cultivate them. Each photograph has a caption under the photograph such as "Drying Cacao" on a photograph of workers in Trinidad. On the verso of each photo is a longer description explaining the process pictured as well as what the end product would be, in this case chocolate, and how the product and cultivation of it affects the country of origin. This is a portion of the description from the Cacao photo: "The laborers in Trinidad are of two classes -- negroes of African descent and Malay coolies from the East Indies, imported under contract for a term of years. These Malays, most of whom are Mohammedans, are an industrious class and at the expiration of their contracts not infrequently remain on the island and make good settlers."The collection compiled here includes the following:1) Iron Furanace -- Hankow, China2) Drying Cacao -- Trinidad3) Cacao Tree in Fruit -- Trinidad4) Making Tortillas -- Mexico5) Mining -- Mexico6) Picking Coffee -- Brazil7) Making Cocoanut Oil -- Ceylon8) Cocoanut Plantation -- Ceylon9) Graphite Mine -- Ceylon10) Paddy Fields -- Ceylon11) Feeding Silk Worms -- Japan12) Reeling Silk -- Japan13) Picking Tea -- Japan14) Going to Market -- Japan15) Separating Rice from the Straw -- Japan16) Weaving -- Japan17) Transplanting Rice -- Japan18) Preparing Tea, Pan Firing -- Japan19) Cutting Rice -- Japan20) Opening Cacao Fruit -- Jamaica21) Coffee Tree -- Costa Rica22) Drying Coffee -- Costa Rica23) Opening Cocoanuts -- Philippine Islands24) Tea, Leaves, Flowers, and FruitsAccording to a 1921 museum bulletin these instructional photographs "illustrate the important commercial products of the world present conditions of life and industry in all countries opportunities for studying the life and customs of the lands and illustrate the useful products of the vegetable, animal, and mineral kingdoms... they illustrate geography commerce economics." The museum offered classes to students who wanted to learn about the world's economy stating "the main object of which to teach the rising generation the important basic facts and principles which underlie modern industry."A nice collection of educational guides displaying a variety of industries from around the world in the 1920s through excellent photographs.

Original drawing in graphite on paper of Anna Pavlova en pointe. Signed in full by the artist at lower right and titled "Pavlova" at lower left

The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and... her line was always impeccable... As an interpretive artist Pavlova probably, even today, remains unsurpassed. She was supreme in roles requiring feminine coquetry and light comedy; she excelled in lyrical and poetic roles in which her fluid, expressive arms and hands were remarkable; and she could be deeply moving in dramatic and tragic roles such as Nikia and Giselle. What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 5, pp. 125-126. Laura Knight, the first female English artist to be elected to full membership in the Royal Academy. She is well-recognized for her work in the genre of ballet. "During 1920 and 1921 Laura met, and painted backstage, some of the most famous ballet dancers of the day from Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. Her subjects included Lydia Lopokova, Anna Pavlova, and the dance teacher Enrico Cecchetti." Wikipedia.. Sheet size 355 mm. x 218 mm. (14" x 8.5"). On laid paper. With preparatory sketch of a dancer (in all likelihood Pavlova) in fluid motion to verso. Provenance: Alister Mathews, art dealer in Bournemouth, England. Slightly worn and creased; small edge tear.
