Autograph letter signed ("C. Saint- Saëns") and autograph manuscript (unsigned).

Algiers, 17. I. 1920. - 8vo. 4pp (letter) and 13 pp. (mscpt.). With original envelope. To Madame Charles de Gallaud. The gift of an autograph manuscript of the composer's lecture on La Fontaine's Fables replete with additions and deletions to an admiring patron. In his letter, Saint-Saëns writes in part: Since this manuscript has the honor of being desired by you, I am only too happy to offer it to you. I am giving it to you without pride, with its deletions and additions and even with the copy of the 'Fables' which I made to make up for the lack of a prompter; and experience has shown me that I did right, and that without that I would have been too brief; and I understood the absolute necessity for a prompter at the theater even for the actors most sure of their parts, despite the prodigious memory of most of them. This attempt at a meeting was well received, but I would not make myself a lecturer, it is too late. However, God knows if I should have anything to say about music! But many of the things which I should want to say cannot be said. Bad habits in music become widespread and one would have to criticize everyone! What to do, one against all! The task is impossible. And I would become the target of too many enemies [.]" (transl. from the French original). - In his manuscript, Saint-Saëns writes that instead of playing the piano, he is giving a lecture, but not at Madame Brisson's Annals in Paris, where he would feel outclassed, but in Algiers, where he has so often taken shelter from the winter and which has saved his life several times. "And now the war is over, it is permitted to have a little amusement". The talk will not be about music, but on La Fontaine's Fables, which he has loved since childhood, but has only come to understand upon constant re-reading. He speaks of La Fontaine's facility with verse, which is deceptive and "thanks to his musical ear, the harmony and equilibrium are such that one doesn't even notice the diversity of rhythms; he leads us whenever he likes, and we follow". He continues with a discussion of La Fontaine's morality and his keen eye for nature and art. He concludes: "La Fontaine did not just know how to paint, he knew how to observe; he studied nature, and he saw what others could not see. In the seventeenth century, in the age of Descartes, animals were thought to have no intelligence. La Fontaine dared to think otherwise, even if he did use animals to illustrate people's behavior". - Saint- Saens proceeds to recite two of La Fontaine's fables in closing. An important letter and manuscript revealing the composer's great interest and his admiration of La Fontaine.

Skiss till matta: Havet - Jorden - Stjärnhimlen.

Akvarell. Signerad: »Ingergerd Torhamn». Odaterad, men troligen utförd på 1920-talet enligt uppgift på äldre bakstycke. 23,5 × 32 cm. >Musikmattan> i Sven Markelius musikrum.

        Martin Arrowsmith [inscribed and signed]

7-1/2 x 4-3/4 inches, (no Dust Jacket) in blue cloth, gilt spine titles. Some browning to front and back endpaper and very minor rubbing to top spine, otherwise very good+ condition. 480pp. Signed and inscribed. Presentaiton copy  from Lewis to Herman Scheffauer during one of his frequent trips to Paris during the 1920's. Written in blue ink. "To Herman Scheffauer with the warmest greetings of Sinclair Lewis. Paris. Guaranty Trust & Co. 3 rue des Italiens." First UK English Edition.Scheffaeur (1878-1927) was a San Franciscan, poet, playwright and translator ( esp. of Thomas Mann's works), member of the Carmel literary colony in California.LEWIS, Sinclair Harry [1885 -1951] was  an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. He became the first writer from the United States to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1926 for his 1925 book, [Martin] Arrowsmith however he refused to accept it. In a letter to the committee, he wrote: I wish to acknowledge your choice of my novel Arrowsmith for the Pulitzer Prize. That prize I must refuse, and my refusal would be meaningless unless I explained the reasons. All prizes, like all titles, are dangerous. The seekers for prizes tend to labor not for inherent excellence but for alien rewards; they tend to write this, or timorously to avoid writing that, in order to tickle the prejudices of a haphazard committee. And the Pulitzer Prize for Novels is peculiarly objectionable because the terms of it have been constantly and grievously misrepresented. Those terms are that the prize shall be given "for the American novel published during the year which shall best present the wholesome atmosphere of American life, and the highest standard of American manners and manhood." This phrase, if it means anything whatsoever, would appear to mean that the appraisal of the novels shall be made not according to their actual literary merit but in obedience to whatever code of Good Form may chance to be popular at the moment." wikipedia quoteArrowsmith is considered to be Lewis' best novel. The book was the source of the successful John Ford 1931 Arrowsmith film and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Facsimile of Kelmscott Press trial pages of Froissart&#39;s Chronicles

NY: William Edwin Rudge, 1920. Folio bifolium sheet. (4) pp. This is a photomechanical reproduction of the rare trial pages for the Kelmscott Press&#39;s projected edition of Froissart&#39;s Chronicles, which, because of William Morris&#39;s death, was never published. According to the colophon, which is printed on the verso, this is one of 110 copies printed for Frederic and Bertha Goudy. While the occasion for which this sheet was produced is not recorded, one does not have to scratch the surface too deeply to see the influence Morris had on Goudy. As a type designer, Goudy based his ATF Jenson on Morris&#39;s Golden Type, though Goudy&#39;s printed work reflects a slightly different aesthetic -- what Susan Otis Thompson described as his "common touch". It has been reported that upon spending some time with Goudy during a trip to London in 1909, Emery Walker told him that "Morris would have liked meeting you" (Thompson, 129). Goudy also famously owned one of Morris&#39;s hand-presses. There were 160 copies of the Froissart specimen pages printed at Kelmscott, all of which were on vellum; presuming all 110 copies of this facsimile were completed, it has the curious distinction of being less common than the original, as only eight copies are recorded in institutions. Slight sunning, resulting in faded red chapter heads and shoulder notes, else about fine in an older frame.
