Facsimile of Kelmscott Press trial pages of Froissart's Chronicles

NY: William Edwin Rudge, 1920. Folio bifolium sheet. (4) pp. This is a photomechanical reproduction of the rare trial pages for the Kelmscott Press's projected edition of Froissart's Chronicles, which, because of William Morris's death, was never published. According to the colophon, which is printed on the verso, this is one of 110 copies printed for Frederic and Bertha Goudy. While the occasion for which this sheet was produced is not recorded, one does not have to scratch the surface too deeply to see the influence Morris had on Goudy. As a type designer, Goudy based his ATF Jenson on Morris's Golden Type, though Goudy's printed work reflects a slightly different aesthetic -- what Susan Otis Thompson described as his "common touch". It has been reported that upon spending some time with Goudy during a trip to London in 1909, Emery Walker told him that "Morris would have liked meeting you" (Thompson, 129). Goudy also famously owned one of Morris's hand-presses. There were 160 copies of the Froissart specimen pages printed at Kelmscott, all of which were on vellum; presuming all 110 copies of this facsimile were completed, it has the curious distinction of being less common than the original, as only eight copies are recorded in institutions. Slight sunning, resulting in faded red chapter heads and shoulder notes, else about fine in an older frame.
