Map of (New) Windsor Square. Known as Tract No. 3743. City of Los Angeles, Cal

Los Angeles.: Engineering Service Co., May 15, 1920.. Los Angeles.: Engineering Service Co.. May 15, 1920.. Blue print map with red detail, 28 1/2 x 20 inches on sheet size 30 1/2 x 22 inches, folding to 8 1/2 x 8 inches. Light foxing to lower left edge (outside map area); awkward folds; otherwise very good condition. Scale 1"=100'. Early plat map of New Windsor Square, Los Angeles, California, in blueprint format. Properties are bordered by Third Street (with streetcar line) to the south; Larchmont to the West; Temple Street (Beverly Boulevard) to the North and Irving to the East. A thin east/west red line runs along Second Street with branches extending into properties of eight subdivisions within the tract. It seems likely that these lines designate alleys at the rear of the various properties in the eight subdivisions, with access from Second Street. Unusual in this particular format, which indicates reductions to lot sizes along Plymouth Boulevard and the east side of Beachwood Drive, so as to create three new properties. No WorldCat listing. .

Los Angeles.: Frank Meline Company., No date. Ca. 1920.. Los Angeles.: Frank Meline Company.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Black and white plat map, 19 x 12 inches, folding to 12 x 4 3/4 inches. Numerical ink notations to several plots, otherwise very good, clean condition. Text on the map states: "These beautiful lots are 50 feet front and have all the public utilities; city water, sewer, gas, electric light, curbing, walks and paved roadways and beautiful trees. They are protected against flats, lodging houses, or business houses, being restricted to residences and high-class bungalows." The properties are bordered by Melrose Avenue to the north and Rosewood Avenue to the south and are situated along Vine (North Arden Blvd), El Centro (North Lucerne Blvd), Larchmont and Gower Streets. The West Sixth Street Car Line runs north and south along Larchmont Boulevard. The depths of the lots vary: there are a number at approximately 112 feet but the bulk are 140 to 143 feet deep. Prices in pencil on many of the lots, ranging from $1800 to $2300. WorldCat lists only one library holding the map: Yale. Overall very good clean condition. .

, No date. Ca. 1920.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Blue line plat map, 17 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches on sheet size 19 1/4 x 17 1/2 inches. Red crayon and pen notations, two folds, very good condition. A map showing a portion of the New Windsor Square development, indicating the subdivision as a work in progress. The map shows properties along Plymouth Boulevard and Beachwood Drive between Temple Street (Beverly Boulevard) and First Street as being reduced in frontage size from the recorded map, with the object of creating three new building lots. Text at the top of the map indicates the size of properties along Larchmont, Gower and the West side of Beechwood are identical to the recorded plat map, whereas the changes along Plymouth and the east side of Beachwood await approval of Los Angeles City Council. Lots fronting onto Gower Street, Beachwood Drive and Plymouth Boulevard are marked in pen or pencil with price; many have been colored red. Prices range from $2750 (for a 52 foot width) to $7,000 for large irregularly sized lots along Beachwood Drive. An important revision of the map of New Windsor Square ("Copy of Map of Tract No. 3743") produced by the Tracy Shoults Company to advertise their new subdivision. No WorldCat listing. .

Paris: Editions Paul Rosenberg, 1920. Paris: Editions Paul Rosenberg, 1920. (Picasso, Pablo). Paris: Editions Paul Rosenberg, 1920. Copy no. 78 of 200 numbered copies (Entire edition 250: 50 with a signed etching, 200 as this, numbered 50-250). Printed by Ateliers Andre Marty; Daniel Jacomet et Cie for the text, typography and reproductions. Quarto. Original board folder with ties (slight wear to edges, ties restored). Fold-over wrappers bearing title information. Leaf of justification. Slight wear to covers and inner hinge, otherwise a bright and fine copy of a fragile album. The ballet Le Tricorne was performed for the first time in London on July 22, 1919 (its Paris premiere was January 23, 1920). In May 1919, Picasso was commissioned to do the costumes and sets for this ballet set in Spain. Picasso made some twenty different studies for the stage set, at least four for the drop curtain, and 30 sketches for the costumes and decor. The drawings which were finally chosen for the ballet are reproduced in this album. Paul Rosenberg became not only Picasso's official dealer in 1918, but also his friend. Picasso created a design for Rosenberg's writing paper (depicting a window overlooking the sea), which is reproduced on the title page of this album. This is the earliest collector's album for a single ballet of the Ballets Russes. The year 1921 would see publications of the designs for Bakst's Sleeping Beauty and 1924, the two beautiful albums of Les Biches and Les Facheaux. Contents 32 leaves of reproductions (31 in color) each bearing the blind stamp "PR": 1. One consisting of a pencil study of the drop curtain (black and white); 2. One watercolor of the stage set (Albert Barr called the watercolor design in ochre, pink and blue "Picasso's best stage set because of the particularly effective use of space and color" [qtd. in Cramer]); 3. 26 costume drawings; 4. Six drawings (on four leaves) of the details of the decor. Reference: Cramer, Pablo Picasso the Illustrated Books (1983), no. 8.

Marlborough Square in the Beautiful Wilshire District on the Sixth Street Car Line

Los Angeles.: Tracy E. Shoults Company., 1920.. Los Angeles.: Tracy E. Shoults Company.. 1920.. Black and white plat map broadsheet, 17 1/2 x 15 inches, folded irregularly to 5 x 9 1/2 inches. 2 inch area of paper loss to upper right corner, some pencil and ink notations, creasing, red sold stamps. An interesting plat map of Marlborough Square showing the progress of sales in this upmarket subdivision between Temple Street (Beverly Blvd) and Rosewood Avenue, with houses fronting on Vine (North Arden Blvd), El Centro (North Lucerne Blvd), Larchmont and Gower, showing lots marked with a red SOLD stamp and the prices of those still available (between $1450 and $4000). The lots are arranged on a grid with depths increasing from east to west (111 to 148 feet), and widths of 50 feet (corner blocks being wider). John Steven McGroarty in the 1921 publication "Los Angeles from the Mountains to the Sea" writes of developer Tracy E. Shoults: "His largest development project was instituted in 1919 when he placed on the market the Windsor Square, the Windsor Heights and the Marlborough Square residential districts in Los Angeles. All of these are restricted sections in the most exclusive residential districts of Los Angeles and in this metropolitan section of Southern California are to be found today no subdivisions that can rival in attractiveness for the building of homes of the higher class the properties that are thus being effectively developed and exploited under the careful and discriminating direction of Tracy E. Shoults & Company. The firm has excellent descriptive literature that may be had upon application, and these splendid tracts should challenge the attention of prospective home seekers whose requirements are in consonance with appreciative estimate of real values. Mr Shoults is known as one of the most progressive and vigorous exponents of real estate enterprise in Los Angeles...." The pencil annotations include a date of June 1920, and lot prices. The map was drawn by C. Fiske, Jr. C.E.; an earlier edition of this map with James V. Baldwin as developer is listed in WorldCat (#83982719) but with no libraries actually holding that item or the present version. .

Copy of Map of Tract No. 3743 Also known as New Windsor Square in Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles.: Engineering Service Co., No date. Ca. 1920.. Los Angeles.: Engineering Service Co.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Black and white plat map broadsheet, 23 x 19 inches, folding to 7 x 11 1/2 inches. A few additional folds; two very short tears in lower margin; very good, clean condition. Text on verso. Information regarding Windsor Square is dealt with most helpfully at the web site of the Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society. They write: "The older section of Windsor Square opened in 1913 and New Windsor Square opened in April 1920. The area north of Third Street was marketed by Tracy E. Shoults and Company. This tract was laid out on contour with meandering streets and irregular lots. This new idea residential community was labeled by the marketer as 'A subdivision without mistakes.'" Text accompanying the map itself states that Windsor Square is in "the heart of the Wilshire District and commands an unsurpassed view of the mountains and the sea." Verso of map features "a synopsis of the Restrictions and Conditions created for the improvement and development of Tract No. 3743..." and has the signatures of the original purchasers. Text next to the map states "All restrictions applying to this tract will be in force until January 1st, 1970." Later maps (see our stock numbers 50369 and 50370) indicate reductions in the size of lots along Plymouth Boulevard and the east side of Beachwood Drive between First Street and Temple St. (Beverly Blvd) reducing by one the number of lots available along these streets. A most attractive map promoting properties in New Windsor Square, clean and bright, in very good condition. WorldCat lists the map, but provides no information on library holdings. .

        Rossum's Universal Robots:

Prague: Vydalo Aventinum, 1920. Prague: Vydalo Aventinum,, 1920. kolektivni drama o vstupni komedii a trech aktech. Octavo. Original wrappers. Housed in a puce folding case. Minor wear and fading, an excellent copy. First edition, inscribed by Capek on the half-title to his future mother-in-law, dated 18 March 1921. Capek met the young actress Olga Scheinplugova in 1920, but they did not marry until 1935, three years prior to his death. She outlived him by 30 years. A scarce book, especially so inscribed by the author, who died on the eve of the Second World War. His brother Josef, whom Karel credited with suggesting the word "robot", was murdered in 1945 in Bergen-Belsen, a fate that would also have awaited Karel, who lampooned the Nazis (nowhere more effectively than in his 1936 satire War With the Newts). It is hard to imagine our language without the word "robot", which was based on the Czech term for a drudge, "robota", and found its first English-language usage in the title of this publication. This play was enormously successful and influential, quickly translated and performed elsewhere. The dystopian story, relating the perils and dehumanization of technology, owes much to the legend of the Golem, which partly originated in Prague.

Hopkins vom Women's City Club of Boston: "I received your very kind letter at the end of August but could not answer it before as until now my plans for returning to America have been very uncertain.

Hannover, Banas & Dette, 1920.. 4°. 2 Bll. Vollmer 4, 249. Vgl. The Sphinx. Illustrated and decorated by Alastair.

London und New York, John Lane, 1920.. Quart. Zu seinen Illustratoren zählten u.a.

      (n. p.):. (n. d.).. 12" x 16". 30 leaves [12 blank].. Dark grey cloth commercial album with linen tie. "The Ideal Scrap Book" lettered in gold to front cover.. Album cover has some water stains in upper right corner, rubbing and. sunning to binding. News clippings and playbills fragile with. creases and some small tears. Photographs mostly VG but some contain. creases, bent corners, and tears, occasionally through images.. "The little Ballard girl, a chubby creature... singing or dancing she holds the eye... She has that 'Something' that commands attention." - San Francisco Daily News, Oct. 22, 1920. Vaudeville ruled popular entertainment in the first two decades of the twentieth century, and of all the talents it produced, the child stars were the most idolized by fans. Betty "Baby" Ballach, member of the "Blanche Hertz Kiddies". "The Follies of 1920", the "Soup to Nuts Revue", and other "Kiddie Kabaret" shows originating in San Francisco and touring the West Coast, was frequently photographed and featured by the local press. This album contains her clippings of newspaper reviews, photos, and playbills from these early performances and also from her tours as a teenager with the Fanchon and Marco "Brunettes" and "Dance Moods" shows as a member of the Hirsch-Arnold Dance Company. She is shows with child and adult dancers in snapshots and promotional photographs in an array of dazzling costumes and artistic poses. There are large professional shots of the dancers in large hair bows, feathered & jeweled hats and shiny slippers, bathing suits, Christmas costumes and fancy flapper fashions; family snapshots of Ballach in a sombrero, Chinese pyjamas, a matador suit, and with a parasol. At the back of the album separated by some blank pages are many other uncaptioned family photographs. Ballach's tours took her up and down the West Coast including Seattle and Pasadena; she also starred in a revue at Frauman's Egyptian in Hollywood. The company traveled as far East as Springfield and Worcester, Massachusetts. In her hometown of San Francisco, Betty performed in all of the well-known theaters - often on stage three times a day - including at the Pantages Theater, now magnificently restored and known as The Orpheum. During this time audiences were witnessing the transformation of theaters to movie houses. The playbills in Ballach's album advertise films with Mary Pickford and other pioneering actors shown between stage acts. It was in fact the cheaply priced cinema ticket and national enthusiasm for Hollywood celebrities that finally cancelled the vaudeville circuits. Nevertheless, we can see here that "Little Betty Ballach" enjoyed her moments in the spotlight! San Francisco Theaters shown in photographs or documented in included newspaper clippings: Strand, Fox, Tivoli, Casino, Wigwam, Hippodrome, Cline, Grauman's. Vaudeville and Other Entertainers with Whom She Played: Frankie Jenks, Gus Mulcay, Edie Clark, Walt & Jack Hays, Margueritte Churchill, Wallace Reid, Jesse Crawford, Earl Akam, Jose Mercado, Armanda Chirot, Helen Hoagland, Whirlwing Acrobatic Artists, Seymour and Corncob, Slate Brothers, & Ali Hassan's Blue Streaks. . Approximately 120 b/w photographs [of varying sizes, includes 3 professional 11" x 14" b/w photographs], a few detached from album, some with subjects' names written in ink on versos. One large tinted photograph of Ballach's mentor Blanch Hertz. One 14" x 10" colored pencil portrait presumably of the adult Ballach. One playbill in a plastic sleeve is inserted.

FIFTEEN DRAWINGS. Blue Nudes, Post-Jazz, Reading Room British Museum, Timon of Athens I, Timon of Athens II, Group, Pole-Jump, Ezra Pound Esq., HeadI, Head II, Nude I, Nude II, Nude III, Nude IV, Seraglio.

The Ovid Press. London. No Date. 1920 - LIMITED EDITION. Folio. (16.8 x 11.8 inches). A complete set of fifteen unbound plates (seven of which are in colour) mounted on heavy grey wove mounts, each titled in French and English, and stamped with the emblem of the Ovid Press, designed by Edward Wadsworth. Colophon has limitation statement on the front inside cover written in John Rodker's hand, - "250 copies. This is no. 16". Original portfolio with mounted colour illustration to one panel and publishers details and logo the the other. The plates are in fine condition, the portfolio slightly soiled and slightly chipped at the extremities. Overall very good indeed. --- This is the second of Lewis's three portfolios, the last being published in 1932. Fifteen Drawings is the rarest of these, according to Rodker, with no more than 50 copies having actually been issued. Copies vary in the selection of the plate used for the cover (Nude I in this case), and, as noted by Pound and Grover, plates in the portfolios are sometimes matched with the wrong mounts (here two different compositions are tipped onto mounts for Nude III). Although the stated limitation of Fifteen Drawings was 250 copies, Pound and Grover (citing Ransom) note that "not more than 50 copies were actually issued", however, as Morrow and Lafourcade counter, "although the scarcity of this portfolio would tend to verify [Ransom's] statement, if we may assume that the limitation notices were numbered sequentially, and not randomly, considerably more than 50 copies were published, as a number of copies examined bear high limitation numbers". Map of Windsor Square North of Third Street. Not Yet Recorded Subject to Approval of City Council. City of Los Angeles, Ca. Scale 1" to 100'.

Engineering Service Co. Los Angeles. Ca. 1920. - Blueline plat map, 30 x 21 inches on sheet size 32 x 22 1/2 inches, 4 folds. Annotations (including anticipated prices for the lots) appear in pencil and red crayon, overall light wear, short edge tears and creasing. A preliminary plat map "not yet recorded; subject to approval of City Council" of the area which became known as New Windsor Square, bordered by Third Street (with streetcar line) to the south; Larchmont to the west; Temple Street (Beverly Boulevard) to the north. This new idea residential community was labeled by the marketer as 'A subdivision without mistakes.'" Text on a later Shoults' map of New Windsor Square (circa 1922) states that Windsor Square is in "the heart of the Wilshire District and commands an unsurpassed view of the mountains and the sea." Annotations in red pencil indicate pricing for some of the lots, from $9,000 to $15,000; several lots are marked in pencil "sold"; a large undivided block at the upper right of the map outside the current development has the price of $100,000 penciled in; at lower left a penciled note indicates a change in "garage lines." The name of the developer "Shoults" is written in pencil in the upper right margin. The map is on a scale of 1 inch to 100 feet, and was produced by the Engineering Service Co. Engineers, Washington Bldg. Los Angeles. The map depicts one of the Wilshire District's early sub-divisions in its infancy; uncommon in this state as a working map with annotations relating to the development and marketing of the project. WorldCat shows a record for the map, but no actual library holdings.
