Fasc. 7 (1921) Novella "Loulou" di Thomas Mann. Fasc. 7-8 (1923) interamente dedicato a MANZONI. Fasc. 4-5 (1924) Carlo Carr? La XIV Esp. Fasc. [Maine and various places in Europe. 1907, 1913, 1920]. - A total of 248 original photographic prints. Oblong octavo albums. Original black morocco, spine gilt, titles as transcribed below. Albums with some shelf wear; European album slightly cocked, lower portion of front joint splitting. The photographs are clean and in excellent condition. An outstanding collection of photographic images of scenes in Maine, coastal France, and the Channel Islands. The photographs were taken by an MIT Professor who apparently vacationed in Maine on a regular basis, and who also visited England and France in the year before the outbreak of World War I. The albums of Maine images ably show the natural beauty of far western Maine, while the album of scenes in France and England captures life in small villages and towns in Normandy, Brittany, and the Channel Islands before the peace of the region was shattered by the Great War. Two of the albums feature silver gelatin prints that have been printed directly onto the album sheets, with accompanying handwritten captions. The third album consists of photographic prints affixed to sheets of the album. Though without ownership signatures, we attribute these albums to Ralph Restieaux Lawrence, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. These albums came with other photographic albums made by Lawrence on trips to the American West and Canada, featuring photographs done in a similar style, captioned and bound as these albums. Ralph Restieaux Lawrence (b. 1873) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from MIT in 1895. He taught electrical engineering at MIT from 1896 to 1941, and apparently enjoyed photography and traveling, as the present albums would indicate. The three albums are: [ALBUM ENTITLED Heald Pond Maine 1907]. Original oblong octavo album. [39] original photographic prints, most measuring approximately 3 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches, each print affixed to a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 8 x 10 inches. This album contains a series of lovely photographs of the area around Heald Pond, in west- central Maine, not far from the Canadian border. Heald Pond is known for its natural beauty - ably captured in these photographs - and for its hiking trails. The photographs in this album are uncaptioned, but show a number of images of the large pond and surrounding area, as well as cabins and campsites. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Europe 1913]. Original oblong octavo album. [162] original silver gelatin prints, measuring approximately 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 6 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. The pictures show scenes in France and England, mostly in the regions of Brittany and Normandy, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, and Sark, and the towns of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Many of the photographs show life in villages or larger towns, such as Caen in Normandy. There are a number of photographs of scenes in and around the Brittany village of Concarneau, including market scenes, fetes, and scenes along the port, but other villages, such as Pont-Aven and Vitre are included as well. Many of the photographs in the British islands show castles, ruins, towns, and coastal scenes. In all, a magnificent series of photographs of this region on the verge of World War I. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Attean Maine 1920]. Original oblong octavo album. [47] original silver gelatin prints, measuring on average 3 x 5, (one of them a panoramic photo measuring 3 x 13 1/2inches on a folded sheet) each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 7 x 9 1/2 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. Attean Lake is a resort area located in west-central Maine, and this album of attractive silver gelatin prints shows scenes from a vacation taken there by Lawrence in 1920. The panoramic photograph is a lovely view of Attean Lake from a high perspective on nearby Mount Sally. There are

Fine original portrait drawing of the composer in half-profile by the Viennese artist Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971)

. Signed by the artist with initials and with the composer's name to upper right corner. Undated, but most probably Vienna, ca. 1920. Executed in black pencil on the blank side of a sheet of stationery carrying the letterhead of Universal Edition in Vienna. 286 x 222 mm.. "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove online Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack) was born in Vienna and educated there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States.

        Kingdom of the Pearl, The

1920. first edition. One of 100 Copies Signed by Edmund DulacIn the Original Printed Dust Jacket[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. ROSENTHAL, Léonard. The Kingdom of the Pearl. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. London: Nisbet & Co., [n.d., 1920].English deluxe limited edition (first published with Dulac illustrations in French in 1920 with title: Au Royaume de la Perle). One of 100 copies numbered and signed by the artist (this copy being No. 25), out of a total edition of 775 copies “for sale in the British Empire” (an additional 775 copies were published by Brentano’s, New York, in 1925 “for sale in the United States of America”). Large quarto (11 15/16 x 9 5/8 inches; 303 x 243 mm.). [12], 150, [1], [1, printer’s imprint] pp. Ten mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards.Original quarter vellum over cream paper boards. Front cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Decorative endpapers. A near fine copy in the original printed dust jacket.“Au Royaume de la Perle was first published in Paris (by Payot) in 1919 without benefit of the Dulac illustrations which the author Mr. Rosenthal so eagerly sought. But when, in 1920, Dulac found time to produce 10 pictures, Mr. Rosenthal not only purchased the water colours, but had another publisher, Piazza of Paris, publish a 1,500-copy new edition of his ‘Perle’ book with the Dulac illustrations. Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the ‘Pearl’ illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House…The English edition, although praised by The Times Literary critic as Dulac ‘at his best’ and ‘fantastically Persian,’ was not a commercial success. In order to make use of the 775 sheets remaining from 1,550 printed for the English edition, arrangements were made in 1925 to market an edition through Brentano’s, booksellers in New York…The ‘Pearl’ pictures indeed display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in Sindbad the Sailor, employed in some of his Fairy Book pictures and developed fully in The Tanglewood Tales. It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own…His plates, truly genius, do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls” (Hughey).Hughey 54b.

"I don't really think that I am better than Shakespeare; it is only that 'Shakespeare and Milne' would be even more deadly than pure Milne. but I am much too proud that you like any of the play to resent your finding fault with the rest of it, and I shall be very grateful for your advice...." Princess and the Goblin, The

1920. first edition. There Was Once A Little Princess Who…"[SMITH, Jessie Willcox, illustrator]. MacDonald, George. The Princess and the Goblin. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1920. First Jessie Willcox Smith illustrated edition (binding B). Quarto (9 3/8 x 6 15/16 inches; 238 x 175 mm.). 203, [1 blank] pp. Color pictorial title-page and eight full-page color plates. Publishers beige linen cloth, front cover bordered and lettered in blue and with an additional color illustration pasted on, spine decoratively lettered in blue, top edge gilt, color pictorial end-papers. Neat ink inscription on front blank. A fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket.Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives a lonely life in a castle in a wild, desolate, mountainous kingdom, with only her nursemaid, "Lootie" for company. Her father the king is normally absent attending to affairs of state, and her mother is dead. Irene has never known about the existence of the goblins which lurk in the underground mines but her nursemaid Lootie does know about them. These goblins are grotesque and hideous beings, who centuries ago were human, but due to various reasons, they were driven underground and became malformed and distorted by their new lifestyle. This caused them to despise the humans above the ground and vow revenge against them."Smith's illustrations for George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind (1919) and The Princess and the Goblin (1920) were extremely imaginative and full of vitality. One such example, pictured in The Princess and the Goblin, shows a host of goblins surrounding the young boy, Curdie, who is reciting a rhyme which is supposed to ward off the threatening foes. Smith uses the boy's own shadow to give a foreboding impression, adding a special tension and excitement to the composition."Nudelman, A55.1 (Binding B)
