        Princess and the Goblin, The

Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1920. - "There Was Once A Little Princess Who "[SMITH, Jessie Willcox, illustrator]. MacDonald, George. The Princess and the Goblin. Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1920. First Jessie Willcox Smith illustrated edition (binding B). Quarto (9 3/8 x 6 15/16 inches; 238 x 175 mm.). 203, [1 blank] pp. Color pictorial title-page and eight full-page color plates. Publishers beige linen cloth, front cover bordered and lettered in blue and with an additional color illustration pasted on, spine decoratively lettered in blue, top edge gilt, color pictorial end-papers. Neat ink inscription on front blank. A fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket.Eight-year-old Princess Irene lives a lonely life in a castle in a wild, desolate, mountainous kingdom, with only her nursemaid, "Lootie" for company. Her father the king is normally absent attending to affairs of state, and her mother is dead. Irene has never known about the existence of the goblins which lurk in the underground mines but her nursemaid Lootie does know about them. These goblins are grotesque and hideous beings, who centuries ago were human, but due to various reasons, they were driven underground and became malformed and distorted by their new lifestyle. This caused them to despise the humans above the ground and vow revenge against them."Smith's illustrations for George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind (1919) and The Princess and the Goblin (1920) were extremely imaginative and full of vitality. One such example, pictured in The Princess and the Goblin, shows a host of goblins surrounding the young boy, Curdie, who is reciting a rhyme which is supposed to ward off the threatening foes. Smith uses the boy's own shadow to give a foreboding impression, adding a special tension and excitement to the composition."Nudelman, A55.1 (Binding B) [Attributes: First Edition]

PLENTY BIRD IN HIS SWEAT LODGE." 28 3/4" X 29 1/2" MATTED AND FRAMED ORIGINAL HUFFMAN PHOTOGRAPH, HAND COLORED,TITLED, AND SIGNED BY HUFFMAN IN WHITE INK ON THE SURFACE OF THEPHOTOGRAPH AFTER THE COLORING WAS COMPLETED

[Milestown: The Huffman Picture Studio, ca 1920]., 1920. The original negative is a 6" x 8" glass plate and the original photograph would have been taken sometime during the 1890s. This photograph is an enlargement using the original glass plate negative. There is no way of knowing how many colored enlargements Huffman produced of this image, only that the total would not be very many. We have been told this colored image was not used on page 125, of Peterson's L. A. HUFFMAN, PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE AMERICAN WEST, because it was not known that a color image existed. Plenty Bird was a Cheyenne and Huffman said, "Plenty Bird was a friend, a good sign talker." In this photograph, Plenty Bird's wife has placed inside this lodge, some hot stones. A little later she will cover the lodge with robes and blankets and pass him in a gourd of water, which he will sprinkle upon the hot stones, until he has had his Turkish bath. When the bath is over and the steam has dissipated, he will duck out and get into the cold waters of the creek, and be rid of his ailments. A handsome photograph from a premier American photographer of the old West, and one of a kind.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF TWO SEMINAL PAPERS: Heisenberg's groundbreaking contribution to magnetism and to the identification of the quantum mechanical exchange energy. "Heisenberg's masterly contribution in magnetism lies in identifying the quantum mechanical exchange energy, first appearing in the context of chemical bonding and spectroscopy, to be of central importance in explaining ferromagnetism… The question was this: If every atom has an outer cloud of electrons, then how do atoms approach each other to form a chemical bond? It was Heisenberg who showed that the interaction between electrons, called the exchange energy," was the key (ibid., 60). His "exchange interaction" is a force generated solely by the exchange of positions of two totally indistinguishable quantum particles - "a quantum mechanical effect which increases or decreases the expectation value of the energy or distance between two or more identical particles when their wave functions overlap" (Wikipedia). In the early 20th century physicists did not understand ferromagnetism on an atomic basis. "It was Heisenberg's work in the late 1920's that filled this void. To accomplish this, quantum mechanics had to be discovered first… It was indeed in the fitness of things that the quantum dynamics of the electron left an imprint on another area, namely magnetism, which too had to do with the magnetic effects of electron dynamics" (ibid., 58). What Heisenberg began to understand was the connection between ferromagnetism and electron bonding, two areas that most physicists believed were wholly unconnected phenomena. "It was Heisenberg, who saw the connection and established it in two seminal papers, written in 1926 and 1928 [the two papers offered here]" (Chatterjee, "Heisenberg and Ferromagnetism," Resonance, 2004, 63-64). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. 4to. (9 x 6.5 inches; 225 x 163mm). Two full volumes. Zeitschrift für Physik Volumes 39 and 49. Handsomely bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; library labels removed with slight ghosting visible. Very minor rubbing at the edges on Volume 39. Both tightly and solidly bound. Near pristine throughout the interior.

Extensive Autograph Letter Signed, six pages on 3 separate 4to sheets of line paper, Dedham (Norfolk County) Jail, May 22, 1927

Vanzetti writes a long easy to read letter, from the Dedham jail, almost three months to the day before he died in the electric chair. He writes to Lilly Sarnoff, a sympathizer. "Dear comrade Lilly …we are hoping very little...we have never hoped in Courts and Judges…we are still hoping only on what the comrades and the people will compel the State to give us. Because our case is grave, the solidarity so vast and great, the accuse [sic] so weak and wreched [sic], and our defencive [sic] proofs so strong and evident…the people hoped in a victory and they always got a defeat. Now we are in the hands of Gubernatorial discretion. A bad beast , believe me. But as the evidences [sic] in our favor are so strong, as the protest is universal, the people hope again in a victory. Our case proved…that a handful of men invested of power by the stupidity of the people and who call themselves public servants care a fig for the people [sic] wishes and pay no attention to the people claims…I guess is was Victor Hugo who said that, 'Hope would be the last goodness in life were it not for disperation [sic, no end quote]. I think there is something beyond disperation [sic] and I have learnt that man cannot lives [sic] without hoping…Oh! About the Madison Square Garden….The 'Corriere of America' an [sic] fascista-daily of New York…reported that there was 300 or 400 people at the demonstration and that the orator attacked the fascismo and were violently radical in their words. The Boston Herald said thee were 10,000 people, and the Daily Worker that were 20,000. I think the Herald was the more exact of the three…the Corriere published a letter of an Italian captain, asking what attitude the radical would assume if S. & V.[Sacco and Vanzetti] were fascista. I wanted to answer that we would not even have been indicted if instead to be anarchists we would have been blackguards…." He interrupts his reaction to the reports of the demonstration in New York with personal musings about how his experiences and thoughts might "make a wonderful book." He continues. "Now, returning to the meeting I said it to be of [sic]the Madison Square Garden - I wish to specify that I mean the later demonstration in our behalf, which happened lately in some public square of New York…the comrades have been…galvanized by our trial and our performing wonders. Mankind as [sic] done for two obscure and rebellious workers what on [sic] the past would have only be [sic] done for saints and kings…." He signs in full, "Bartolomeo Vanzetti.". At the time Vanzetti wrote this exceptionally detailed letter, the Sacco and Vanzetti case had almost reached its historical conclusion. Their appeals were exhausted, and as Vanzetti refers to here, their case was now in the hands of Massachusetts Governor Fuller to whom they appealed for clemency. Their appeal was denied. Sacco and Vanzetti were arrested for murder during a payroll robbery in Braintree, Massachusetts, a crime both denied committing. As Italian immigrants and open anarchists, they were caught up in the fear and prejudices of the Palmer raid and Red Scare of the 1920's . Both men received a posthumous pardon by former Massachusetts Governor, Michael Dukakis, but the controversy of their innocence remains. Vanzetti's eloquence also endures as is evidenced in this letter from jail. Despite his misspellings and occasional incorrect syntax, this letter bears witness to one of America's liberal heroes. Overall browned, bends and slight chips to margins, margin creases, one hole on third sheet near the correspondent's name.

Charles-Alexandre Lesueur Artiste et Savant Français en Amérique de 1816 à 1839

Le Havre: Museum d'histoire naturelle, 1920. Large octavo, 42 plates; some leaves loose in the binding, but a good copy bound in marbled parchment boards, original wrappers retained. Lesueur in America. A detailed and surprisingly rare monograph on Lesueur's travels in America, which includes a brief summary of his work as naturalist and artist on the Baudin expedition. This work is of particular interest for Lesueur's later career. In 1815, he travelled to the United States with the American geologist William Maclure, and in 1825 joined the New Harmony commune in Indiana soon after it was founded. It was during this period that he cemented his reputation as a naturalist, especially for his work in conjunction with the American Thomas Say.

        Romance of the Greys

London.: Decoy Press.. First Edition.. 1920.. Folio, 17.5 x 12 inches; eleven mounted color plates after works by Christopher Clark, R.I. At rear, six pp. of advertising touting "The 'Greys,' the big cigarette with the choice flavor"; these adverts feature black and white illustrations (one depicts the R-34 airship) several of which are by Christopher Clark. Front and rear covers abraded along top edge. Toning and very light buckling to endpapers. Printed dedication on paste-down title on front cover reads: "For Colonel W.E.R. Kelly. With the Compliments of Major Drapkin & Co." The Introduction to the volume identifies its intent: to trace the history of the "Scots Greys" in word and picture. "The Second Royal North British Dragoons (the 'Scots Greys') have a record of nearly two hundred and fifty years' distinguished service... Every regiment has its romance--the romance of its history, traditions, corporate spirit. These memories of the glorious past help to form its fighting spirit, and are rightly treasured by those whose work it is to make the living regiment worthy of its honorable parentage." The narrative traces the Dragoons from 1678 through the First World War. Major Drapkin & Company were the manufacturers of Greys cigarettes. "Romance of the Greys" is an uncommon publication, listed as being held by only one WorldCat library. The volume, in good condition, is beautifully illustrated; contents bright and clean. .
