All three books bear Chaplin's personal bookplate that reads 'Charles Chaplin, His Book' with an image of a man leading a dog on a leash, with a large city in the background. Included with the books is a type-written, signed letter from the previous owner explaining that her mother, Aida, who was good friends with Chaplin's first wife Lita Grey, was allowed to borrow these in the twenties when the couple was still married. Aida later acted as a witness at the divorce proceedings, and due to Lita's relocation to Chicago was never able to successfully return them.         Set of 16 first editions comprising:] Children of the Ghetto; The King of the Schnorers; The Bachelor's Club; Children of the Ghetto; The Old Maid's Club; Ghetto Tragedies; The Master; Without Prejudice; Dreamers of the Ghetto; They That Walk in Darkness; The Mantle of Elijah; The Grey Wig; Ghetto Comedies; Italian Fantasies; The War for the World; Jinny the Carrier; The Voice of Jerusalem.

London: William Heinemann; T. Fisher Unwin; Henry & Co.; McClure & Co., 1891–1920 - 16 works in 18 volumes, octavo (various sizes). Early 20th-century red half calf, spines gilt in compartments, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Bookplate to each volume. Spines a little faded, some very light rubbing to extremities. An excellent set. First editions. A superb set of Zangwill's novels including the first Anglo-Jewish best-seller, Children of the Ghetto, and the popular satire The King of the Schnorers, about Jewish beggars in late 18th-century London. Israel Zangwill (1864–1926) was the child of Eastern European immigrants to England and spent his literary career exploring issues of identity, assimilation, and cultural tolerance, not only for Jews but for minorities of all types. As well as a popular novelist he was a prolific critic, translator, and playwright, and an outspoken supporter of feminism and Jewish nationalism. First editions of Zangwill's novels are uncommon, and handsome library sets such as this one are rare. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Lane, New York / Ryerson 1920 - First Canadian edition( using the JOHN LANE , NEW YORK SHEETS) ;PRECEDES THE UK FIRST! This first book by Agatha Christie and first appearance of Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920 by John Lane, New York and subsequently in the U.K. by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1921.VERY GOOD without the rare jacket.THE CANADIAN FIRST EDITION obviously PRECEDES THE BRITISH FIRST EDITION and USED THE FIRST U.S. EDITION PLATES with a separately printed title page. The title page is integral and not tipped in. Ryerson Press probably printed very few copies of this book to secure Canadian copyright. The number of copies probably was fewer than 300 based on other printings by Ryerson, at that time, of established authors (e.g. Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather, 1935).The spine bears the title The Mysterious Affair At Styles ; Christie and The Ryerson Press at the foot. At the base of the title page , underneath the title " The Mysterious Affair at Styles,( then a decorative printed device), A Detective Story by Agatha Christie " is printed : Toronto: The Ryerson Press - New York:John Lane Company-London: John Lane , The Bodley Head; MCMXX. The book has beige cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in dark green. Decorations are different than the British edition. Cloth is rubbed and worn at extremities, slightly tanned at spine. ; front hinge starting; previous owners ink name and address ( Manitoba) to front paste down.Very good overall. Digital photos on request. A very RARE item. For the serious Christie completist! FREE INSURED SHIPPING by COURIER !Please contact the dealer if you have questions.         Irish Fairy Tales

London: Macmillan & Co., Ltd, 1920. - "Mr. Rackham Breaks New Ground in the Illustration of Irish Literature "One of 520 Signed Copies[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. STEPHENS, James. Irish Fairy Tales. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: Macmillan & Co., 1920.Deluxe Edition. Limited to 520 copies, signed by the artist. Large quarto. [2, blank], [2, limitation leaf], x, 318, [2, blank] pp. Sixteen color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on cream paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and twenty-one drawings in black and white.Original quarter vellum, ruled in gilt, over parchment boards. Front cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Covers very lightly browned and some light offsetting to end-papers. A couple of very light marks on upper cover and a tiny and almost unnoticeable amount of (insect) damage on the lower-edge turn-ins. Armorial bookplate of Agnes Marion Armitage on front pastedown. Overall an excellent copy of one of Mr. Rackham's best titles. The fairy tales in this book include:The Story of Tuan mac CairillThe Boyhood of FionnThe Birth of BranOisin's MotherThe Wooing of BecfolaThe Little Brawl at AllenThe Carl of the Drab CoatThe Enchanted Cave of Cesh CorranBecuma of the White SkinMorgan's Frenzy"Rackham's books for the English market in the early post-war years included Flora Annie Steel's English Fairy Tales Retold (1918) and his friend James Stephen's collection of Irish Fairy Tales In the latter book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's haunting of him was justified. The Dublin Independent was particularly warm in welcoming the collection, remarking: 'We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarised us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming." (Hamilton, p. 128)."Rackham's two great books of the twenties were James Stephens' Irish Fairy Tales of 1920 and Shakespeare's Tempest of 1926. Beyond the softness of style and inventiveness, the most striking thing about the colour plates for Irish Fairy Tales is the felicitous and appropriate use of celtic borders" (Gettings, p. 143).Latimore and Haskell, p. 52. Riall, p. 138. Gettings, p.179. Hamilton, p. 185.

Heinrich Plesten. Hardcover. Undated, circa 1920's, this is a rare example of the inter-war satirical cartoonist's work that still has both the dust jacket and the protective slip-case. In very good condition, there is some very light toning at the edges of the pages, the mustard cloth binding is immaculate, the only notable point is the dust jacket has snagged and torn on insertion into the slip-case to the base edge and top corner of the front. The simple card slip-case is heavily worn but doing its job admirably. . Very Good. 9999.

        Toi et Moi (hand-painted vellum)

Librairie Block, Paris 1920 - Paris: Librairie Block (no date, but 1920's). 12mo, 148 pp. Paintings by Z. Z. de Vesley. Quarter vellum and hand-painted marbled boards with hand-painted watercolor illustrations at corners and spine, top edge gilt. Original bookmark ribbon still in place. Very modest, light shelfwear, faint dampstain at lower fore edge corners of pages, a uniquely beautiful binding, between very good plus and near fine. Paul Geraldy (1885-1983), French poet and playwright, may have been born for Valentine's Day. A walking compendium of romantic quotes, his Toi at Moi - probably his most famous oeuvre - is a collection of poetry dealing with the mysteries of love. Artist de Vesley's painted vellum binding, using chimerical ink-pastels, matches the mood in a way which defies words. One envisions this having been at one time proffered as the consummately heart-touching Valentine to -what lady fair ? It is the woman who chooses the man who will choose her (Geraldy). Maybe back in the roaring twenties, that happened, when this little opus was itself young. A painted melody of enchanting visual aspect -as we say now, curb appeal - and words of rending tone. Certainly unique, and not replaceable. Please review scans. L-42n [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Diary of Samuel Pepys

London - G. Bell and Sons. Ltd. 1920 - A handsome set of The Diary of Samuel Pepys with a portrait of Pepys to frontispiece of of volume one, from the pictures by Sir Godfrey Kneller in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Transcribed by the late Rev. Mynors Bright M. A. from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Edited, with additions and a preface by Henry B. Wheatley and with Particulars of the Life of Samuel Pepys to front of first volume. Samuel Pepys FRS, MP, JP, (23 February 1633 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century, and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London. Condition: In a handsome half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with only minor shelfwear and the very occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout but with some foxing and offsetting from binding to endpapers. Overall: NEAR FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Scribner's Sons,, New York: 1920 - First edition, second printing, published the same month as the first. His second book, with 8 short stories. The first printing was 5000 copies and this scarce second printing was only 3000 copies. Bright and nearly fine with just light offset to the front endpaper from item previously laid in. The dust jacket, which is ONE OF THE SCARCEST FITZGERALD JACKETS, shows extensive professional repair, most noticeably on spine and at head of front panel where--unable to determine the correct text for what would appear to be "2nd Large Printing" (only "ge Printing" remain)--the conservationist opted to fill in with the orange, background color. Fortunately the W.E. Hill cover illustration, depicting a scene from "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" is wholly intact. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
