        The Waggoner and other Poems

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd.,, 1920. Octavo. Green cloth with paper spine label. With the dust jacket. Pencilled ownership inscription, partially erased, of the [Henry] Hamilton Fyfe at C[rewe] H[ouse], 1920. Slight crumpling head and tail of the spine, jacket a little rubbed and with corresponding chipping at spine ends and corners of the turn-ins, a very good copy. First edition, second issue. Of an edition of 500, 250 copies were bound in purple cloth for immediate issue, 100 sets of sheets were sent to NY for Knopf's American edition, and the remaining 150 bound up in green cloth later in 1920. Extremely uncommon in jacket in either issue. Blunden's first trade publication, The Waggoner was issued with the encouragement and assistance of Siegfried Sassoon to whom Blunden had sent some of his work in his capacity as literary editor of the Daily Herald. The previous owner of this copy, Hamilton Fyfe, was a roving correspondent and an innovative editor, who reported from both fronts during the First World War. He was "sent to France in August 1914. Despite the difficulties imposed upon all journalists by the military censorship, within three weeks Fyfe secured a memorable success with his account of the retreat from Mons … In 1915 Fyfe was transferred from the western to the eastern front. He travelled from Petrograd through Galicia to Bucharest. Back in Russia in 1916, he reported Rasputin's murder … " (ODNB). In July 1918 he replaced H.G. Wells at Crewe House, Northcliffe's propaganda HQ.

Pale blue quarter morocco over patterned handmade-paper covered boards, front side lettered in gilt, navy top-stain, oatmeal coloured endpapers.         An album of designs for textiles and/or paper.

      - c1913-1920's? Large folio cloth [620x430mm]; 24 card leaves with 39 mounted original colour block prints (3 double page). Expected signs of use but nothing drastic; one print removed. Presumably the designer's album of designs, these are proof prints from the blocks, each show the shape where the repeat pattern fits. The first pages are annotated with details of the client ('Achete a George. 9 Rue St Fiacre Paris' - in earlier decades this was the home of a calico manufacturer, which makes sense, and now houses a public relations firm and Ella Bache, which is neither here nor there) and the engraver (Gillet, sometimes in concert with someone else); the details dwindle as the album proceeds until we reach the large and dramatic geometric design in black and white which was "vendu a Mrs Bosset". Dating these designs to 1913 would seem foolish but for the first few leaves being dated 1913 in the top corner; two or three are dull, traditional floral patterns but the rest, while by no means radical avant garde, would sit more happily in the next decade or two - some are really quite stylish. The theme is floral, or at least botanical although one is based on a Chinese cloud pattern; several are oriental in style or inspiration and one is a very stylish piece of Japanese abstraction. I suspect this to be the work of a Japanese designer in Paris, partly because it most recently came from Tokyo and partly because of the modern simplicity of several designs.         Representatives of the Law.

London: N.p., 1920. - Forty-Eight Original Kyd Watercolors"The Law is an Ass"But the Artwork is SublimeKYD, (pseudonym of Joseph Clayton Clarke) artist. [DICKENS, Charles]. Representatives of the Law. (Ranging from the Bench to the Broker’s man), extracted from the Works of Dickens, and portrayed by "Kyd" in a series of 48 Character Studies drawn in colours. London: ca. 1920.Calligraphic title page in an orange border and with a judge’s head at the top, calligraphic list of plates in a green border, and forty-eight original watercolors by Kyd.All loose sheets, each measuring 10 9/16 x 7 7/8 inches and with the paintings within fine line borders comprising a panel measuring 7 x 4 1/2 inches. Each is a painting of a legal character from one of Dickens many works. The name of the character is in pen at the top left hand corner of the image space and the title of the book in which the character is found is located at the lower right hand corner. Each painting is signed by Kyd and depicts forty-eight judges, lawyers, solicitors, clerks, police, and prison turnkeys found in Dickens's novels, including Mr. Jaggers (Great Expectations); Mr. Perker (Pickwick Papers); Mr. Blathers (Oliver Twist); Uriah Heep (David Copperfield); Mr. Jinks (Pickwick Papers); Mr. Mallard (Pickwick Papers); Serjeant Buzfuz (Pickwick Papers); Mr. Chuckster (Old Curiosity Shop); Mr. Guppy (Bleak House); Mr. Tulkinghorn (Bleak House); and many others, not the least of whom is Sampson Brass ((Old Curiosity Shop), "an attorney of no very good repute with a cringing manner, whose blandest smiles were so extremely forbidding that to have had his company under the least repulsive circumstances one would have wished him to scowl" - a character we strenuously assert to have no connection whatsoever in fiction or in life to our Brass family.Chemised in burgundy moire silk and housed in a full red morocco pull-off case with gilt spine lettering. A singular collection and fine.Dickens was intimately knowledgeable about the legal world. He began his professional life as a law clerk and had ambition to pursue the law as a career. As a result, "Charles Dickens was preeminently the novelist of the law, and his lawyers have a hold upon the public imagination far surpassing that of any other author" (Fyfe, Charles Dickens and the Law, p.7)."Dickens used a repeated and consistent pattern in presenting lawyers in his works Generally, the lawyers have been treated simply as parts of other investigations, or as objects of Dickens' contempt. [In] Robert D. Neely's The Lawyers of Dickens and Their Clerks, [Neely] express[es] the opinion that Dickens had a disdain for lawyers. 'One of the most marked prejudices was his dislike of lawyers, and all that pertained to the machinery of government.' This hatred is explained and justified in various ways. Philip Collins in Dickens and Crime states that the author was following a literary tradition in treating the lawyers vituperatively. In Charles Dickens: His Tragedy and Triumph Edgar Johnson sees Dickens' treatment of lawyers as one more aspect of his hatred of business. And Humphrey House in The Dickens World views the lawyer similarly to Johnson; House states that the lawyer has only a business, professional approach to people and to life. Thus, the lawyers are dismissed " (Baughman, Charles Dickens and His Lawyers. ALSA Forum Volume 6, Number Number 2 [1982]). "The one great principle of the English law is, to make business for itself. There is no other principle distinctly, certainly, and consistently maintained through all its narrow turnings." (Bleak House)"'If the law supposes that,' said Mr. Bumble, squeezing his hat emphatically in both hands, 'the law is an ass - an idiot. If that's the eye of the law, the law is a bachelor; and the worst I wish the law is, that his eye may be opened by experience'" (Oliver Twist)."What lawsuits grow out of the graves of rich men, every day; sowing perjury, hatred, and lies among near kindred, where there should be

Fasc. 7 (1921) Novella "Loulou" di Thomas Mann. Fasc. 7-8 (1923) interamente dedicato a MANZONI. Fasc. 4-5 (1924) Carlo Carr? La XIV Esp. Fasc. A.         THREE ALBUMS OF ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF SCENES IN MAINE, AND OF LIFE IN FRANCE AND ENGLAND IN THE YEAR BEFORE WORLD WAR I, TAKEN BY MIT PROFESSOR RALPH RESTIEAUX LAWRENCE].

[Maine and various places in Europe. 1907, 1913, 1920]. - A total of 248 original photographic prints. Oblong octavo albums. Original black morocco, spine gilt, titles as transcribed below. Albums with some shelf wear; European album slightly cocked, lower portion of front joint splitting. The photographs are clean and in excellent condition. An outstanding collection of photographic images of scenes in Maine, coastal France, and the Channel Islands. The photographs were taken by an MIT Professor who apparently vacationed in Maine on a regular basis, and who also visited England and France in the year before the outbreak of World War I. The albums of Maine images ably show the natural beauty of far western Maine, while the album of scenes in France and England captures life in small villages and towns in Normandy, Brittany, and the Channel Islands before the peace of the region was shattered by the Great War. Two of the albums feature silver gelatin prints that have been printed directly onto the album sheets, with accompanying handwritten captions. The third album consists of photographic prints affixed to sheets of the album. Though without ownership signatures, we attribute these albums to Ralph Restieaux Lawrence, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. These albums came with other photographic albums made by Lawrence on trips to the American West and Canada, featuring photographs done in a similar style, captioned and bound as these albums. Ralph Restieaux Lawrence (b. 1873) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from MIT in 1895. He taught electrical engineering at MIT from 1896 to 1941, and apparently enjoyed photography and traveling, as the present albums would indicate. The three albums are: [ALBUM ENTITLED Heald Pond Maine 1907]. Original oblong octavo album. [39] original photographic prints, most measuring approximately 3 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches, each print affixed to a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 8 x 10 inches. This album contains a series of lovely photographs of the area around Heald Pond, in west- central Maine, not far from the Canadian border. Heald Pond is known for its natural beauty - ably captured in these photographs - and for its hiking trails. The photographs in this album are uncaptioned, but show a number of images of the large pond and surrounding area, as well as cabins and campsites. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Europe 1913]. Original oblong octavo album. [162] original silver gelatin prints, measuring approximately 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 6 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. The pictures show scenes in France and England, mostly in the regions of Brittany and Normandy, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, and Sark, and the towns of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Many of the photographs show life in villages or larger towns, such as Caen in Normandy. There are a number of photographs of scenes in and around the Brittany village of Concarneau, including market scenes, fetes, and scenes along the port, but other villages, such as Pont-Aven and Vitre are included as well. Many of the photographs in the British islands show castles, ruins, towns, and coastal scenes. In all, a magnificent series of photographs of this region on the verge of World War I. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Attean Maine 1920]. Original oblong octavo album. [47] original silver gelatin prints, measuring on average 3 x 5, (one of them a panoramic photo measuring 3 x 13 1/2inches on a folded sheet) each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 7 x 9 1/2 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. Attean Lake is a resort area located in west-central Maine, and this album of attractive silver gelatin prints shows scenes from a vacation taken there by Lawrence in 1920. The panoramic photograph is a lovely view of Attean Lake from a high perspective on nearby Mount Sally. There are

Fine original portrait drawing of the composer in half-profile by the Viennese artist Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971)

. Signed by the artist with initials and with the composer's name to upper right corner. Undated, but most probably Vienna, ca. 1920. Executed in black pencil on the blank side of a sheet of stationery carrying the letterhead of Universal Edition in Vienna. 286 x 222 mm.. "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres.
