        Chad Gadya (An Only kid)

Berlin: Welt-Verlag, 1920. Berlin: Welt-Verlag, 1920. Original printed cream boards with small handcolored decoration. Portfolio a little age-darkened ; replacement ties of archival tan linen. Fine in original repaired plain cardboard slipcase, which is rubbed and chipped. Written by Uriel Birnbaum and illustrated by his brother Menachem Birnbaum, portraitist and graphic artist, who died in Auschwitz. This children's folksong concludes the Passover haggadah, the text used at the seder, with a linked structure connecting verse to verse with a series of vicious characters each destroying the last. Here the illustrations are chilling, presaging the violence of World War II and the Holocaust. Ten dramatic handcolored plates start with the idyllic figure of the father, clutched by his small child, holding the little white goat of the title and end with the narrow shaft of God's mercy dominated by the wings and talons of the Angel of Death. Reference: Karp. From the Ends of the Earth, Judaic Treasures of the Library of Congress, pages 128-130, illustrated: "At first glance , the most chilling bibliophilic book of that time seems the most benign... only violence persists." . Boards. Fine. Illus. by Menachem Birnbaum. 4to.

A charmingly illustrated copy of this children's tale by Charles Kingsley. With numerous tipped-in coloured plates by A. E. Jackson. There he dies and is transformed into a water baby, as he is told by a caddisflyan insect that sheds its skinand begins his moral education.         The Works. This Side of Paradise, Flappers and Philosophers, Tales of the Jazz Age, The Vegetable The Great Gatsby, All the Sad Young Men, Taps at Reveille, Tender is the Night

New York: Charles Scribners, 1920-1935.. New York: Charles Scribners, 1920-1935. First edition, first printings of F. Scott Fitzgerald's works. Octavo, 8 volumes. Uniformly bound by Bayntun-Riviere Bindery in full dark green morocco. Titles to the spine in gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, except The Great Gatby which has the top edge gilt. F.Scott Fitzgerald signature on the front panel of each volume in gilt. Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise, displayed a sophisticated cynicism masking keen psychological insight and sensitivity to the falseness of the ideals of the so-called "jazz era" in America, following World War 1. F. Scott Fitzgerald continued to write on this theme in two volumes of short stories, Flappers and Philosophers and Tales of the Jazz Age. With the publication of The Great Gatsby, the story of a gross and ostentatious man who gained immense material success but who destroyed himself and those around him in the process, F. Scott Fitzgerald's full powers as a novelist were revealed; he was ranked by many critics as one of the pre-eminent American writers. In his later writings, as exemplified by the short story collections All the Sad Young Men and Taps at Reveille, and the novel Tender is the Night, his central theme shifted to what he deemed the inevitable corruption of the individual by the blind crassness of modern society.

        Die Weide
