        Wilshire Crest

Los Angeles.: David Barry & Co., No date. Ca. 1920.. Los Angeles.: David Barry & Co.. No date. Ca. 1920.. Blueline plat map, 29 x 23 3/4 inches on sheet size 31 1/2 x 26 inches, folded to 8 1/2 x 4 inches. Few soft creases, very good condition. A map of the up-market Wilshire Crest development in its very early stages ("Map not yet recorded 1" = 100'" is noted at the lower edge of the map). The development lies between Wilshire Boulevard at north and Country Club Drive (Olympic Blvd.) at south with lots fronting on Hudson Blvd. at the western edge and Rimpau Blvd. at the eastern edge. On the outside panel of the verso is the penciled note: "Please hand this to Mr. Woodruff first time he calls. H.C." (Harry Chandler?) with the pencil identification of the map "Wilshire Crest." An article at identifies Wilshire Crest as becoming South Brookside, which was later shortened to Brookside. However, on their web site, the Windsor Square - Hancock Park Historical Society writes: "Brookside, first known as Windsor Crest, was carved out of the original Rancho Las Cienegas (Ranch of the Marshland), owned by Mexican native Don Francisco Avila.... The neighborhood got going in 1921, when the Rimpau Estate Company began to sell home sites to L.A.'s wealthiest families." The prices of the lots on the David Barry & Co. map appear in pencil; south of Eighth Street the lots were in the $2500 to $4600 range, with a number ranging between $6000 and $11000. Estate-sized tracts were valued at up to $20,000. The Directory of Brokers and Salesmen (1922) shows Barry as having branch offices at Wilshire and Rimpau and Rimpau and Country Club Drive, presumably established to facilitate the marketing of Wilshire Crest. As a footnote: text on a January 6, 1924 David Barry real estate ad in the Los Angeles Times states: "The history of our 18 other west-side tracts has without exception been one of steadily increased values." A most interesting map of an "in-progress" sub-division in the booming LA real estate market of the 20s. No record of the map in WorldCat. .

RELATIVITY. The special and the General Theory. A popular exposition. Translated by Robert W. Lawson. D.Sc

Methuen & co. Ltd. London. 1920. Methuen & co. Ltd. London. 1920. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo. (7.7 x 5.2 inches). Portrait frontis and five line diagrams within the text. 8pp publishers advert at back of book. Small crease to the top of the rear board. Aside from some offsetting to the blank endpapers and spotting to the closed fore-edge this is a very good, bright copy in the original publishers red cloth with blind stamped lettering to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Spine gilt lettering a little dulled but still overall a very good bright copy. In the rare original publishers orange dustwrapper, ruled and lettered in black to both board panels and inner flaps. Spine lettered in black, with original price of 5/-. A small area of loss (0,2 x 0,3 inch) to the outer edge of the lower panel, not affecting the text. Some tiny chips to the top of the spine, which is faded to a uniform tan but with the lettering still strong and bold, but overall a better than very good example. Uncommon in dustwrapper. --- This important translation, apart from being the first English edition, also contains new text written by Einstein specially for this edition; Appendix III, The Experimental Confirmation of the General Theory of Relativity.

Waverley Book Company Collection of Tobias Smollett Works

London -The Waverley Book Company Ltd, 1920. London -The Waverley Book Company Ltd, 1920 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A uniformly bound collection of fictional works from Tobias Smollett, charmingly illustrated throughout. Containing Adventures of Peregrine Pickle in two volumes, The History and Adventures of an Atom, and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker. Tobias George Smollett was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels, such as The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle is the story of the fortunes and misfortunes of the egotistical dandy Peregrine Pickle, and it provides a comic and caustic portrayal of 18th century European society. George Orwell, writing in Tribune in 1944, praised Smollett's 'masterpieces', Roderick Random and Peregrine Pickle. Peregrine devotes himself for months at a time to the elaborate and horribly cruel practical jokes in which the eighteenth century delighted. When, for instance, an unfortunate English painter is thrown into the Bastille for some trifling offence and is about to be released, Peregrine and his friends, playing on his ignorance of the language , let him think he has been sentenced to be broken on a wheel. A little later they tell him that his punishment has been commuted to castration. Why are these petty rogueries worth reading about In the first place because they are funny - Secondly, by simply ruling out good motives and showing no respect whatever for human dignity, Smollett often attains a truthfulness that more serious novelists have missed. Each work is complete within itself, with Adventures of Peregrine Pickle complete in two volumes. Although, this set is four volumes of the original six volumes published in The Waverley Book Company series. Condition: All volumes are in their original red cloth bindings with gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, all volumes are sound, with only some light rubbing and minor marks. Front hinge to Peregrine Pickle volume one is slightly strained. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound and bright, although with some instances of light foxing to The History and Adventures of an Atom. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        This Side of Paradise

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920 First edition, first printing. One of 3,000 copies. Publisher's green B cloth binding, front board lettering stamped in blind, spine lettering stamped in gilt. Very good, with some minor fraying to the spine ends, spine lightly dimmed, a few light spots to the otherwise bright and clean boards, bright and fresh interior. Overall, a clean and attractive copy. In a facsimile dust jacket after the original designed by W. E. Hill, with an illustration of a man and woman in evening dress against an orange background. Bruccoli A5.I.a. This Side of Paradise is Fitzgerald's first novel, based on the author's undergraduate experience at Princeton University and courting of his future wife Zelda Sayre. In this debut novel, Fitzgerald explores the theme of the "Lost Generation," or the generation whose adolescence coincided with World War I and who faced the radically different post-war world with feelings of dejection and a jaded sense of morality. He would continue to explore this theme in later novels, including The Beautiful and Damned (1922) and The Great Gatsby (1925). The layout of the text, which is divided into three sections: "Book One: The Romantic Egoist," "May, 1917 - January, 1919," and "Book Two: The Education of a Personage," emphasizes the major cultural shift that occurred after WWI. The story features Amory Blaine, a young Princeton student with a penchant for literature and weakness for beautiful debutantes, who leaves his Midwestern home to study at Princeton and travels overseas during the war after being recruited for the American armed services. The novel leaves Blaine feeling rather depressed, rejected by both women he was interested in and crestfallen at the death of his mentor, which he expresses with the notable last line: "I know myself, but that is all." While the events and characters of the novel are based on Fitzgerald's own life, the plot is also an allegory for the Lost Generation's worldview in the wake of WWI. W. E. Hill's dust jacket design features models who resemble F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, emphasizing the autobiographical nature of the text and solidifying the couple as the poster children for their generation.. Illus. by Hill, William Ely. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

He did well with the truck business, he entered the automobile business, and between 1924-1929 produced a small number of cars, which were sold mostly on the Pacific Coast. he didn't have a wide selection of cars, but they had good quality, and will billed as "Aristocratic in Appearance."       Berlin: Welt-Verlag, 1920. Berlin: Welt-Verlag, 1920. Original printed cream boards with small handcolored decoration. Portfolio a little age-darkened ; replacement ties of archival tan linen. Fine in original repaired plain cardboard slipcase, which is rubbed and chipped. Written by Uriel Birnbaum and illustrated by his brother Menachem Birnbaum, portraitist and graphic artist, who died in Auschwitz. This children's folksong concludes the Passover haggadah, the text used at the seder, with a linked structure connecting verse to verse with a series of vicious characters each destroying the last. Here the illustrations are chilling, presaging the violence of World War II and the Holocaust. Ten dramatic handcolored plates start with the idyllic figure of the father, clutched by his small child, holding the little white goat of the title and end with the narrow shaft of God's mercy dominated by the wings and talons of the Angel of Death. Reference: Karp. From the Ends of the Earth, Judaic Treasures of the Library of Congress, pages 128-130, illustrated: "At first glance , the most chilling bibliophilic book of that time seems the most benign... only violence persists." .
