Bern & Biel, Switzerland Ernst Kuhn 1920 - Square 16mo. (45)ff., printed on rectos only. First issue. A striking picture book in the Swiss dialect, illustrated with forty-two brightly colored full-page woodcuts by Erna Haas in the style of the Wiener Werkstätte. The scenes depicted in the woodcuts are charming and folkloric, showing domestic tasks and children at play. Each page is surrounded by a delicate decorative border. The text is comprised of thirteen nursery rhymes, which are fully integrated into the illustrations. This was Haas's only book; little is known about the illustrator. Printed by the Graphic Arts Institute Säuberlin & Pfeiffer. Endpapers decorated in blue with figures from the woodcuts. Bound in tan patterned paper boards with a pictorial label. Some light marginal spotting to a few pages, not affecting illustrations, else a fine copy. (Kaiser, Swiss Picture Books, p. 25) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

      - (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "What Will You Have" with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily, Mrs. Twistytail the pig and Mrs. Wibblewobble a duck. Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

      A. S. Watson & Co., Shanghai, China 1920 - 1st printing. Blue silk-covered boards, gilt lettering, gilt and raised silk designs, deckle edges. This is #156 out of 1000 limited copies of this first edition. Significant rubbing, moderate foxing and light soiling to boards, although gilt on front board is legible and somewhat bright. Most of blue silk is missing from spine and extremities. Corners are moderately to significantly bumped. Front gutter is moderately cracked and rear gutter is lightly cracked, but hinges and binding are tight. Three light circular stains to rear board, as though a water glass once sat atop the book. 1 & 5/8" by 5/8" sticker residue on rear board. Trivial to light foxing to interior pages, otherwise interior is quite clean. Edition page (rear flyleaf) is 2/3 loose, but all other pages are tight. All 66 tipped-in photogravures are present and generally bright. Some pages have small numbers written lightly in pencil in the corner, but there are no markings otherwise. Despite its significant cover wear, this remains an impressive copy of this rare, highly collectible first edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Arthur Pearson. (1920). First. First English edition (previously published in the U.S. as The Uttermost Farthing). Cheap paper browned, small spot on the front board, a very good or better copy. This copy Inscribed by Freeman: "P.M. Stone from R. Austin Freeman with cordial good wishes. 3rd April 1939."         Prominent novels and short stories.]

London, Berlin, Leipzig: Various, [c.1860–1920.] - 45 volumes, octavo. Bound in burgundy half calf by Bayntun-Riviere, titles and centre tool to spine, raised bands, matching cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. The occasional minor blemish, overall in excellent condition. A collection of early editions of Trollope's most prominent fictional works including the Barsetshire novels, the parliamentary novels and the dramatic novels. Also included are the "overseas novels" (with the exception of Nina Balatka), the majority of the "comic novels" and four volumes of short stories. Given how prolific a writer Trollope was (he published something like 70 books) and the fact that there was never a collected edition of his entire works produced this is one of the most comprehensive collections that we have come across. A handsomely bound set.

Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was a prolific British artist and illustrator, best known for his deluxe editions of popular children's books. Artistically inclined since childhood, Rackham started out illustrating for newspapers, but it was not until he began drawing for children's literature that he received critical acclaim. In response to his burgeoning fame, Rackham's publisher, William Heinemann, began producing deluxe and trade editions of his illustrated works, the first being Rip Van Winkle in 1905. Deluxe editions were produced in a limited edition of numbered copies (ranging in quantity from 250 - 2,020), bound in vellum bindings, printed on handmade paper, and signed by the illustrator. The trade editions were published concurrently in simple bindings, on thinner paper, and with fewer color plates. This publication strategy benefited both publisher and artist; Rackham produced about one book per year and would have an annual gallery exhibition showing his original artwork for his latest book. The recipient of multiple awards for illustrations, Rackham was a diverse artist with a talent for both the fantastical and the intricacies of human nature.. Signed by Illustrator. Hard Cover. Fine.
