IN GREECE: JOURNEYS BY MOUNTAIN AND VALLEY. With a preface by Théophile Homolle; translated from the French by Charles Frederic Hardy.

Éditions d'Art F. Boissonas, Geneva 1920 - Folio, iv, 5-133 pp., with 40 full-page photogravure plates with printed tissue guards, and numerous photogravures in text. Decorative borders and devices in color, printed on handmade paper. Printed wrappers, titled in gilt, with an orange inset medallion of Pegasus on the front cover. New spine applied, modest stain on rear wrapper and faint stain to top corner Over all certainly very good, with the photogravures beautifully rendered. Fred Boissonnas (1858 - 1946) was from an influential family of photographers, initially situated in Geneva. His accomplishments in photography enabled him to travel widely and often, and from these travels he produced several books, including works on Greece and Egypt. His Greek images totaled over 7000 photographs made with large format cameras, and are inclusive of historical architectural remains, and vistas and landscapes. In the early 20th century he founded the publishing firm of Boissonnas S.A., which produced several exquisite limited editions illustrated with hand-pulled photogravure plates, elegant design and letterpress of several color inks. In 1910 he made EN GRÈCE PAR MONTS ET PAR VAUX from his enormous archive of Greek negatives. That lavish large folio was limited to 230 numbered copies printed on handmade paper; in 1936 he also issued a second edition in a smaller folio format with a larger limitation. This is the first edition published in English, and has a limitation of 300 numbered copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

1920 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 11 1/2 x 16 inches

London: William Heinemann,, 1920. The Story of Shackleton&#39;s Last Expedition 1914&#150;1917. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in silver, large block of Endurance stuck in the ice to front board in silver, publisher&#39;s device to rear board in blind, top edge dark blue. With a small collection of articles relating to Shackleton, and a photographic postcard loosely inserted. Colour frontispiece and 87 half-tone plates, folding map at the rear. Some rubbing to the tips and spine ends, small square of paper pasted to the front free endpaper below inscription, occasional very minor foxing. An excellent copy. First edition, fourth impression of Shackleton&#39;s account of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (issued four months after the first impression). Inscribed on the front free endpaper by Shackleton: "To G. W. A. Hutchison with grateful thanks for kindnesses. From Ernest Shackleton. January 1921." At this time he was on the lecture circuit, and began planning what would eventually become the Shackleton&#150;Rowett Expedition, on which he faced his untimely death just barely a year later. The leaflet for his memorial fund is loosely laid in. This is a lovely copy of Shackleton&#39;s account of the infamous Endurance Expedition. In 1914, Shackleton and a 28-man crew had set out on the Endurance in the hope to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent &#150; an 1800 miles journey, sea to sea. However, in January 1915, due to exceptionally cold and icy conditions, the Endurance was trapped in ice. Ten months later, the pressure of the ice crushed the ship which sank, leaving Shackleton stranded some 1,600 km from any human activity. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts, Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (ODNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal.

SOUTH: The Story of Shackleton&#39;s Last Expedition 1914-1917

New York: Macmillan Company, 1920. First American Edition. With a color frontispiece, 87 illustrations from photos and drawings, and a folding map at the rear. Tall 8vo, original ribbed green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and cover. xxi, 380 including index. An unusually bright and fine copy, the green cloth unfaded and fresh, the text fine indeed. ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS IN THE SOUTH POLAR OEUVRE. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST EPICS IN THE HISTORY OF ANTARCTIC TRAVEL AND ONE OF THE MOST HARROWING TALES EVER PENNED OF RESCUE AND HUMAN TRIUMPH. SOUTH is the story of Shackleton&#39;s failed attempt, after learning of Amundsen&#39;s attainment of the South Pole, to be the first to cross the last continent from sea to sea. The first editions of this book have truly become quite scarce and are rarely found in as nice condition as seen here.<br> &#147;The story of our attempt is the subject for the following pages, and I think that though failure in the actual accomplishment must be recorded, there are chapters in this book of high adventure, strenuous days, lonely nights, unique experiences, and above all, records of unflinching determination, supreme loyalty, and generous self-sacrifice on the part of my men which, even in these days that have witnessed the sacrifices of nations and regardlessness of self on the part of individuals, still will be of interest to readers who now turn gladly from the red horror of war and the strain of the last five years to read, perhaps with more understanding minds, the tale of the White Warfare of the South. The struggles, the disappointments, and the endurance of this small party of Britishers, hidden away for nearly two years in the fastnesses of the Polar ice, striving to carry out the ordained task and ignorant of the crises through which the world was passing, make a story which is unique in the history of Antarctic exploration.&#148; - Shackleton from the Preface.

Original Lithographed Portrait of General Leonard Wood

N.p. [n.d. but ca.1920's], N.p. - A stately portrait of General Leonard Wood (1860-1927), a physician who, among his many accomplishments, served as the United States Army's Chief of Staff, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor General of the Philippines. A celebrated military figure who fought in the final battle against Apache leader Geronimo, and helped organize the "Rough Riders" with Theodore Roosevelt. A truly uncommon item by Boardman Robinson, who is best known for his political cartoons and illustrations for the socialist monthly The Masses, as well as the Liberator and New Masses. The lithograph has no statement of limitation, and we find no published example of this image, nor any record in OCLC. Original lithograph featuring a bust portrait of General Leonard Wood, signed in pencil by Wood and artist Boardman Robinson. On off-white stock measuring 49cm x 65cm (19.25" x 25.5"), professionally hinged and matted. A few short closed edge tears (not extending into image), with faint creases; Very Good-Near Fine.
