Signor Formica: Eine Novelle [WITH ORIGINAL DRAWING SIGNED BY ILLUSTRATOR]

      W. Drugulin (1920), Leipzig - 1/120. Elephant folio. VIII, 103,[2]pp. & 13 unnumbered illustration pages. Gold-stamped full green calf with gold lettering on cover and spine in original dust wrapper and sturdy paper-covered green clamshell box. Gold-lined raised bands. All deckled edges. Inside of front and back board stamped with double gold borders. Binding designed by R. Hadl, handcrafted by A. Köllner. Elaborate deluxe edition of Hoffmann's novel "Signor Formica". E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German author, composer, draftsman, caricaturist, jurist, and music critic. He was one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. Signor Formica was first published in 1820, and a year later was included in the forth volume of Hoffmann's work "Serapionsbrüder." His few literary works are stories in which supernatural and sinister characters appear in people's lives, revealing grotesque and often tragic sides in human nature. This deluxe edition is illustrated with original artwork by the Hungarian sculptor and etcher, Richard Hadl. The illustrations consist of one original signed full-page pencil drawing, as well as 12 full-page-, and 7 in-text drawings in aquatinta-manier. Additional signature of illustrator on limitation page. "Dieses Buch wurde im Jahre neunzehnhundert und zwanzig in der Offizin W. Drugulin in Leipzig gedruckt. Die Auflage beträgt einhundert und zwanzig numerierte Exemplare auf van Gelder-Zonen-Bütten. Nach Beendigung des Druckes wurden die Platten vernichtet. Dieses Exemplar ist Nr. XXXIV und wurde gedruckt für Freiherrn Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild. Durchgesehen: (signed) Richard Hadl." Printed on handmade van Gelder-Zonen paper. Foreword by Hadl. Text in German. This particular copy was printed exclusively for Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild (1899-1987), of the famous Rothschild lineage. Goldschmidt-Rothschild was also well-known for his extensive, rare book collection. Slip with information on binding laid-in, as issued. Very slight rubbing on head and tail of spine. Minor creasing on spine of dust wrapper. Slight scuffing on clamshell box, tiny tear on top section on spine of box. 10mm offsetting from interior leather-lining on outer edges of front and rear free endpaper. Dust wrapper and clamshell box protected by modern mylar. Exceptional copy in a stunning binding. Fine condition. Scarce with dust wrapper. Vorzugsausgabe.         Autograph music manuscript, "Ossity Hongroise, op. trente"

n.p. [Paris?], n.d [ca. 1920-1954]. 4to. 3 pp. pen and ink, 68 bars, piano score on printed music staff paper. Toned, small closed tears and edgewear; still a playable fair copy . A lyrical piece in A minor, with a central section in A major, composed for the piano and inscribed by Lionel Barrymore to his sister: "Dédieé à Mlle. Ethel Barrymore." Barrymore composed a variety of music, from solo pieces to large orchestral works, and received performances by the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The meaning of the title ("Eccentric Hungarian"?) is not clear to us, but in any case this is a wonderful association between two of the greatest American actors of the first half of the 20th century

WOODCUT ENGRAVINGS OF JAPANESE SHUNGA, OR EROTICA, "Pillow Book"]

Japan circa 1920s - Japanese Shunga of the Ukiyo-e type, executed in woodblock and hand-coloured in enpon form. With twelve beautifully rendered 8.5 by 8 inch erotic woodcuts framed by gilt paper. Oblong Folio, folding Japanese accordion style creating a 10 x 5.5 inch portfolio bound in in original stiff boards covered with patterned silk. Extremely well preserved, the images all bright and pristine, the paper on which they are printed fine, the silk covered boards beautifully preserved and just a touch mellowed. AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF JAPANESE SHUNGA, an erotic art of the Ukiyo-e style which reached its pinnacle during the Edo period. Works of this type were produced from the 17th to early 20th centuries in spite of repeated governmental attempts to suppress Shunga. Shunga has its origins in Ancient China. It is thought that Shunga were inspired by the twelve scrolls depicting the twelve sexual acts that the crown prince had to carry out as an expression of yin and yang. Several of these prints display a common Shunga theme, the exaggeration of the size of the genital organs. The introduction of Western technologies in the later 19th and early 20th century, particularly the importation of photo-reproduction techniques, had serious consequences for Shunga. Eventually, Shunga could no longer compete with erotic photography, leading to its decline. But, it clearly provided the inspiration for the Sh wa and Heisei, the modern art known in the Western world as 'Hentai', which is the sexually explicit form of Manga or Anime.         [Manuscript] The Adventures of Little Jack Rabbit, [together with] a specification letter by author and note from publisher relating thereto Based on nature and the actual habis of the Jack Rabbit. Scenes and surroundings are those under which the Jack Rabbit actually lives. Not a nature fake but a true to life story

Seattle. Cloth . Very Good. A lovely mock-up manuscript of a chidren's story, with many original watercolored drawings, and generally several takes on each drawing. N.d., circa 1920. Oblong quarto, 35 by 28 cm, 14 by 11 inches. Unpaginated, 118 ff. Phillips was a published author who wrote several successful children's books about the West, including "Indian Tales for Little Folks". It is unknown why this particular manuscript was never published, given how far he got in the process. (It would seem doubtful that the concerns related to copyright, since the story is easily distinguishable from Peter Rabbit, from which the author expressly did draw inspiration, and which he explicitly cites as a template in his "specifications". The most significant difference is in this story's ambition to depict the animals more realistically and as true animals, not animals dressed in human clothes. Indeed, this conceit would set this story apart from most anthropomorphic juvenile literature of the day. In this story, the young rabbit, defying his mother's warning about coyotes, ventures out into the sagebrush and has close calls with not just a coyote but also an eagle, meets several other burrowing animals and has to escape from an irrigation ditch as he desperately seeks to find his way home. Effortlessly the author educates us in the process about the lifestyle of Jack Rabbits. The drawings are mounted on heavy stock and interleaved with pages of tracing paper and a light weight paper upon which variants of the drawings are rendered. Throughout are maginal notes covering details of the book's production, in addition to the letter of instructions. Heavy foxing on some leaves. A half-title or cover sheet somewhat chewed up. The binder is loose by the front joint, and the title label on the front board is heavily rubbed.

Pra Malai: Thai Manuscript with Twenty Paintings.

      - An accordion-folded Thai manuscript measuring: 5 1/2 inches x 25 1/2 in. x 3 in. (thick) written on a thick paper in black ink, the pages without paintings are written in double columns with the words widely spaced. The text from the front is ninety-five pages, with a title on the reverse of the front cover, and ninety-six pages on the reverse side. There are a total of twenty paintings, arranged as ten sets, with one of each set on the sides that the paintings are displayed on. These are painted in colors with some gold highlighting, and include a set of seated monks in yellow robes; a set of facing divinities with different faces, colors, with gold; another set of similar facing divinties, with gold; a third set of differing, facing divinities with gold; a scene with a man being speared by a hunter with a dog, with a bleeding figure in a tree, and facing this the standing figure of the monk Pra Malai, with a male and female figure surrounded by flames; a set with a figure of the standing monk with a kneeling figure offering a steaming bowl, while two figures also bring food as an offering; a set where the standing monk is offered a flower by a blue-loinclothed man, and the man gathers flowers before mountain scenery; a set with the seated monk with offerings at a shrine, with a seated figure, three divinities with gold against a blue background; a set of two differing divinities seated before a shrine, with two other divinities facing, all with gold details; a set with a standing monk with figure in a blue loincloth, figure in a yellow loincloth with a kneeling, robed figure in attitude of reverence. These paintings illustrate the Pra Malai story, including the monk's visit to hell, and the offering of flowers to the monk by a peasant of the Himalayas. The covers are made of a thicker, folded paper, which has been folded and covered with a black lacquer. The outer covers show some chipping away of the paper, and general wear from use. The left-hand margins of the pages show some damp, with a few scattered spots, wear of the pages. This manuscript shows signs of being actually used for the traditional readings of the Pra Malai legend, and has not been restored. It was purchased by a Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, who was then attached to the American Consular Service in Bankok, in what was then Siam, in the early 1920's, and appears to have been made in Thailand in the 19th century. The scan shows one of the seated divinities, with a sample of the text and inner border. Weight: 6 lbs. Postage and packing is extra on this item. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
