        Original Art: Weeping Dachshunds

1920. Original art. Watercolor. Approximately 16" x 15.5". Framed and glazed. Signed lower right: "Tony Sarg 20." Very slightly faded, but still a near fine, interesting and amusing watercolor of a pair of weeping wiener dogs. Sarg, born in Guatemala, and trained in Germany, married an American and moved to England. With the advent of World War One he moved to New York where he did illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post. He was probably best known as a children's book illustrator who specialized in quirky animal figures, but he was also responsible for reviving the popularity of the marionette theater in America. For a period in the 1930s, until his death in 1942, he designed the animated Christmas displays in the windows of Macy's, and designed the first hot-air balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. A pleasing little painting. .

Carbon copy of a Typed Letter Signed with initials, in Hebrew, 4 separate pages, 4to, marked up later, apparently in preparation for publication which never happened. Dated 1 Mar-Cheshvan 5696; 28-10-35 [28 October 1935]

. An important and lengthy letter on Zionism to the Seventh National Conference of Torah va-Avoda in Poland stating that the conference would "succeed in strengthening the Zionist movement in Poland, strengthening the pioneering spirit among the youth and that it will accept and unify the ranks of the Hebrew workers in the land." Ben Gurion indicates he would not able to accept the invitation to participate. The Torah va'Avoda is a religious Zionist movement based on the beliefs that the combination of Torah and labor together, social justice and a productive life, are integral in a complete religious life in Judaism. Continuing from his work begun as early as 1920 with the founding of the Histadrut, Ben-Gurion expresses his views on the importance of unity throughout the world to ensure that workers from Poland and beyond immigrate to Israel, bringing skilled labor and joining the Histadrut, ensuring an independent state for the Jews. Ben-Gurion begins this letter with his apology and then says that he would like to "take this opportunity, as a comrade who has worked for years together with members of "Hapoel Hamizrachi" [the religious labor movement] in Eretz Israel, to make several comments to your conference." His comments basically state the importance of the unity of the Zionist movement worldwide to secure an independent state for Jews and to ensure that skilled labor is brought to Israel to make this happen. Among other points, he discusses "Hebrew labor." He refers to the recent Congress in Lucerne [the 19th World Zionist Congress at Lucerne where, among other decisions, David Ben-Gurion was elected to the Executive of the Jewish Agency]. He states that the Congress "accomplished the internal unity of the Zionist Organization," but suggests that it "is not yet whole." He continues in this vein saying that the Zionist leadership has been formed, but what is needed is 'the complete and faithful unity in the body and roots of the movement." He states that their goal is now to strengthen and harden "the unified strength and will of the entire movement." His continued discussion points on "Unity in Zionism" addresses the fact that there are a wide variety of nations with different cultures and traditions that need to come together to enlist "all the nations' efforts in the speedy building of our land and the redemption of our nation in the near future." He encourages their efforts. "Your members stand together with the entire community of organized labor... the Histadrut National Labor Federation - in a difficult and desperate war in which victory or Heaven forbid defeat will decide the fate of Zionism... nothing else in Zionism requires as much practical strengthening - as Hebrew labor...." He promotes unity and ends offering his blessing, "Yours in faith, D.B.G." He initialed this important letter with fountain pen, in small letters, on browned, fragile typing paper, two punch holes per page at the right margin, and matching tear to upper right corner on each page. Ben Gurion writes this statement four years before Germany's invasion of Poland which began World War II and about a year after Hitler acceded to power in Germany, officially on Aug. 19, 1934. Ben-Gurion was named one of "Time" Magazine's 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century.

Relativity: The Special & The General Theory. A Popular Exposition. Authorised Translation by Robert W. Lawson. With Five Diagrams and a Portrait of the Author.

Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, London 1920 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt and to upper board in blind. Portrait frontispiece, diagrams and equations within the text. Publisher's eight-page ads at rear. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. Spine faded, spine titles dulled, a little rubbed at extremities, some light spotting to contents. A very good copy. Bibliography: Weil 90a. First English language edition, first impression of Einstein's first popular treatment of relativity. Einstein's general theory of relativity, "one of history's most imaginative and dramatic revisions of our concepts about the universe" was completed in a frenzy of work at the end of 1915 (Isaacson, Einstein: His Life and Universe, p. 223). The following year he published (in German only) Relativity: The Special & the General Theory, an account intended to be accessible to the general public, and which he tested by reading drafts to his step-daughter Margot, "pausing frequently to ask whether she indeed got it" (Isaacson, p. 232). Einstein took the opportunity to publish the present English language edition when interest in general relativity exploded after the theory was confirmed experimentally by Arthur Eddington's eclipse observations in 1919. This edition includes an important new appendix on Eddington's work, "The Experimental Confirmation of the General Theory of Relativity", that was not present in any previous edition. The book, "filled with many thought experiments that could be easily visualised", became a best-seller, and is still in print today. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Fifteen Drawings

London: The Ovid Press,, [1920]. [Blue Nudes, Post-Jazz, Reading Room British Museum, Timon of Athens I, Timon of Athens II, Group, Pole-Jump, Ezra Pound Esq., Head I, Head II, Nude I, Nude II, Nude III, Nude IV, Seraglio.] 15 unnumbered plates printed in various colours and mounted on grey, textured card. Contained within a vellum-imitation board portfolio, titles in black and with a Lewis design pasted to the front cover, publisher's device designed by Edward Wadsworth to rear cover in black. Portfolio tanned and rubbed along extremities, slight loss to fore wing flap and bottom of spine panel, a couple of small closed tears to top and bottom wing folds. Occasional light spots to plates. In excellent condition. Sole edition, number 16 of 250 numbered copies. Rodker's Ovid Press was an interesting if short-lived affair which, despite only lasting between 1919-21, produced a number of important and deeply influential publications: the present title, Pound's Mauberley, and Eliot's Ara Vos Prec. Fifteen Drawings is the second of Lewis' three non-literary publication, preceded by Timon of Athens (1913) and followed by Thirty Personalities and a Self-Portrait (1932); it is the scarcest of his portfolios to find complete. Apart from titles, the plates are unaccompanied by text and have no apparent thematic unity, covering a variety of subject matter and ranging in date from 1913 to 1919.

UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART: WHAT WILL YOU HAVE

      - (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "What Will You Have" with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily, Mrs. Twistytail the pig and Mrs. Wibblewobble a duck. Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
