Memories of a Life spent between the Bread and the Fishes and the Days when all Cares were forgotten

[Reading: privately printed, n.d., ca. late 1920s] - Nostalgic privately produced memoir of angling in the Thames Valley a century ago. Chapman was a Reading tobacconist and a keen fisher, and he recounts his experiences fishing on private lakes, ponds, and local rivers, including the Kennet and Thames, as well as misadventures in boats, dense fogs, notable catches of Pike and Thames trout, and an incident of river pollution. The other copy we have seen varies slightly in the pagination and the page format. Reed and his correspondent, A.E. Hobbs, discuss the book's author and identify most of the places alluded to in Chapman's narrative, which includes a portrait of the author holding a 20-pound fish taken from the Thames. An uncommon work, produced in just a few copies, with an illuminating correspondence concerning this curious and interesting book (COARSE FISHING) Square 8vo. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. Original green textured cloth, titled stamped in gilt on upper board, speckled edges. Bookplate of O.M. Reed ("Omar") with his ownership signature dated August 1934 and annotations. Reed's draft of an essay and correspondence with A.E. Hobbs loosely inserted. Old cellotape mark along front pastedown where letter was tipped in. Fine. Not in Hampton's Angling Bibliography 1881-1949. Not in BL or OCLC [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Sniping in France

London: Hutchinson & Co.,, 1920. With Notes on the Scientific Training of Scouts, Observers, and Snipers. With a Foreword by General Lord Horne of Stirkoke. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, single fillet panel in blind to the front board. Frontispiece and 23 other plates, illustrations to the text. Boards slightly mottled, spine lettering oxidised, free endpapers browned, but nonetheless a very good copy indeed. First edition. An uncommon book, poorly made and more often encountered loose and shaken, this is an excellent copy. Inscribed by the author, to one of the major sponsors of his scheme to create a training programme in sniping and counter-sniping; "To General Sir Charles Monro with the deepest gratitude of the Author, who very clearly realises that without Sir Charles' help the work described herein would never have been done. May 1920, H. Hesketh-Prichard". In Chapter I, "The Genesis of Sniping", Hesketh-Prichard records a conversation that he had with General Monro when he was lobbying for support for his plan to formalise sniper training within the BEF: "the matter was mentioned to Sir Charles Monro, commanding the Third Army … Sir Charles in talking over the matter, made a remark which I have always remembered. 'It is not,' he said 'only that a good shot strengthens his unit, but he adds to its moral - he raises the moral of his comrades - it raises the moral of the whole unit to know it contains several first-class shots" (p.8) Another supporter of his scheme was John Buchan "at that time the Times correspondent on the Western Front … [who] gave the idea great encouragement". Hesketh-Prichard raised and commanded the 1st Army School of Scouting, Observation & Sniping, his work being described in great detail with numerous interesting anecdotes, appealing illustrations by Ernest Blaikley, "Artist's Rifles and lately a Sergeant-Instructor at the school" , together with some excellent photographs. The Appendices include the course curricula, together with training notes on the importance of the maintenance of weaponry, observation, patrolling, specifications of the Lee Enfield 1914 Pattern "Sniper's Rifle". Hesketh-Prichard was traveller, explorer, and noted big game hunter who Falls credits with "very fine work in raising the standard of marksmanship of the British Armies in France after the majority of the good regular marksmen had become casualties. He had many followers, but he was the pioneer, and much of the credit for the defeat of the ingenious and pertinacious German sniper is due to him". Hesketh-Prichard died within two years of publication, the book is very rarely signed or inscribed, and this is a superb association.

        Original Art: Weeping Dachshunds

1920. Original art. Watercolor. Approximately 16" x 15.5". Framed and glazed. Signed lower right: "Tony Sarg 20." Very slightly faded, but still a near fine, interesting and amusing watercolor of a pair of weeping wiener dogs. Sarg, born in Guatemala, and trained in Germany, married an American and moved to England. With the advent of World War One he moved to New York where he did illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post. He was probably best known as a children's book illustrator who specialized in quirky animal figures, but he was also responsible for reviving the popularity of the marionette theater in America. For a period in the 1930s, until his death in 1942, he designed the animated Christmas displays in the windows of Macy's, and designed the first hot-air balloons for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. A pleasing little painting. .

        Untitled (Seveal Birds)

1920 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 12.8 x 17 inches

Berlin, Propyläen-Verlag 1920. (Vgl. Max Slevogt. Das druckgraphische Werk. 1914-1933. Düsseldorf, G. Söhn 2002, Nr. 329. Provenienz: Sammlung Max Osborn (1870 - 1946), Publizist in Berlin; Galerie Michael Hasenclever, München.. As it turned out, a Smith color picture would appear on each and every cover of Good Housekeeping from December 1917 through April 1933. There was no issue in January 1920 due to a strike. Smith added another cover in May of 1934, for a total of 184 separate illustrations. These covers for Good Housekeeping represent one of the longest runs of published covers by a single artist in the history of pictorial illustration. Although the subject matter varied, a predominant theme was the representation of the American home and family life, which invariably included children in all sorts of activities. Along with Smith's first published cover, the magazine included a short preface introducing the illustrator… Many of the illustrations first published as covers for Good Housekeeping were later assembled together as book illustrations. This was true of A Child's Book of Modern Stories (1920), A Little Child's Book of Stories (1922), A Very Little Child's Book of Stories (1923), Boys and Girls of Bookland (1923), and A Child's Book of Country Stories (1925).         MAIN STREET, The story of Carol Kennicott

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Howe, 1920. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth with orange lettering panels on the spine and upper cover lettered in blue and ruled in orange. (8), 451 pp. An unusually well preserved and handsome copy, tight and in very nice condition at the extremities. The cloth is dark and clean, the orange panels and lettering are complete and especially fresh and well preserved. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT AMERICAN NOVEL OF THE 20TH CENTURY. MAIN STREET is important for a number of reasons — among them is the portrayal of a strong female protagonist, and what one might now call feminist themes by a male writer. MAIN STREET was initially awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for literature, but was rejected by the Board of Trustees, who overturned the jury's decision. The prize went, instead, to Edith Wharton for The Age of Innocence. In 1926 Lewis refused the Pulitzer when he was awarded it for ARROWSMITH.
