Chtenie odna iz obyazannostei cheloveka (Reading is one of a Person's Duties)

Petrograd Gosudarstvennoe Izdatel'stvo (1920) - Framed poster measuring 19 inches by 26 inches. This two-color lithograph was printed in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) by the Petrograd State Publishing House and shows a man and a woman reading books while a hammer rests against the man's leg and more books lay in a pile at their feet. The accompanying text declares, in Cyrillic, "Reading is one of a Person's Duties." Starting in 1919, the Soviet government began a campaign to eradicate illiteracy by mandating compulsory education for children and enrolling illiterate adults in special literacy schools. Part of this new policy included issuing propagandistic posters linking literacy to one's duty as a Communist and positioning knowledge as the key to greater production. This poster, showing the tools of production next to books, was in close alignment with this new campaign. Writing in pencil and ink to upper margin of poster, otherwise fine in wooden frame measuring 23 1/2 by 30 inches. (White, The Bolshevik Poster, pp. 104-105, 108, plate 5.36)

Original Art: "De Ox and De Frog",

n.p. n.d., 1920's, n.p. - An original pen and ink sketch by Edward Winsor Kemble produced for "The Youth's Companion", an early 20th century juvenile journal. The sketch 6½ by 8½ inches and with printer's marks along the bottom. Titled in pencil: "De Ox and de Frog". On the reverse is a sticker noting that the sketch has been published by The Youth's Companion as well as a notation, "Original Art". The Tale of the Ox and the Frog appears in AEsop, also in La Fontaine and possibly in Uncle Ned's Old Tales Retold. It describes a mother frog inflating herself to the point of bursting (and in some versions beyond that point) as she imitates the size of an ox. And indeed in Kemble's sketch we se a large chested female frog standing over a mushroom table addressing two frog-children. Cropped closely on the sides just touching the image else this is in very nice condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Fine original portrait drawing by Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971), titled by the artist "Franz Lehar (drawn from life)" and signed by Dolbin just below the portrait

[ca 1920], [Vienna] - "[Lehar] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." Andrew Lamb in Grove onlineDolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack) was born in Vienna and studied there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States. The composer is depicted in profile, wearing collar and tie. Executed in pen and ink and black chalk on a light yellow background wash. 343 x 250 mm.

ELEONORA DUSE: Fine head and shoulders portrait photograph of the actress, with the photographer's label on verso. Gelatin silver print on smooth paper

[New York?], ca. 1920. 13 x 10 inches; framed. . One corner chipped, one-inch tear without loss at lower margin, else fine. On the verso is the photographer's printed label reading "ARNOLD GENTHE / 41 East 49th Street / New York City". Beaton and Buckland, The Magic Image, p. 139 (illustrating this photograph) . A strong, evocative image of the near-legendary Italian actress, shown in profile toward the end of her life. Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) was born in Germany and came to San Francisco in 1895 as tutor for the son of a German Baron. He subsequently worked there as a professional photographer before moving to New York in 1911; he photographed the most famous people during a career that spanned four decades. "Many of [Genthe's portraits] are...period pieces, but immutable are his portraits of Duse and Garbo." (Beaton and Buckland). In "Arnold Genthe 1869-1942" a catalogue of an exhibition of his work held in 1975 at the Staten Island (NY) Museum, Dorothy Wilcock Neumeyer writes concerning this photograph (which is illustrated): "Genthe once said that one of his greatest pictures was of Eleonora Duse, made on her farewell visit to the United States...he telephoned Duse and told her that he would like to photograph her when she reached New York. Duse said 'You do not want to photograph an old lady. Besides, I am not sure I will be in New York.' Genthe said, 'I will go to you in Pittsburgh. As for being old, you can never change the exquisite bone structure of your lovely face.' He went to Pittsburgh and took this great photograph. No make-up, the white hair, worn in the simple manner, a face poignant with beauty even more compelling than in her earlier years. Duse wept when she saw this picture." ONE OF GENTHE'S FINEST WORKS

IN GREECE: JOURNEYS BY MOUNTAIN AND VALLEY. With a preface by Théophile Homolle; translated from the French by Charles Frederic Hardy.

Éditions d'Art F. Boissonas, Geneva 1920 - Folio, iv, 5-133 pp., with 40 full-page photogravure plates with printed tissue guards, and numerous photogravures in text. Decorative borders and devices in color, printed on handmade paper. Printed wrappers, titled in gilt, with an orange inset medallion of Pegasus on the front cover. New spine applied, modest stain on rear wrapper and faint stain to top corner Over all certainly very good, with the photogravures beautifully rendered. Fred Boissonnas (1858 - 1946) was from an influential family of photographers, initially situated in Geneva. His accomplishments in photography enabled him to travel widely and often, and from these travels he produced several books, including works on Greece and Egypt. His Greek images totaled over 7000 photographs made with large format cameras, and are inclusive of historical architectural remains, and vistas and landscapes. In the early 20th century he founded the publishing firm of Boissonnas S.A., which produced several exquisite limited editions illustrated with hand-pulled photogravure plates, elegant design and letterpress of several color inks. In 1910 he made EN GRÈCE PAR MONTS ET PAR VAUX from his enormous archive of Greek negatives. That lavish large folio was limited to 230 numbered copies printed on handmade paper; in 1936 he also issued a second edition in a smaller folio format with a larger limitation. This is the first edition published in English, and has a limitation of 300 numbered copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Untitled (Two Ducks)

1920 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 8 x 10 inches

"The Compact" was printed in 1920 for the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the signed of The Compact. It was created by Tiffany and Co. With Arts & Crafts leaf boarder. This original print had been framed (no longer framed) and therefore is in pristine condition. It is dry mounted on acid free foam backing with attractive green matting. Also included is a book "The Pilgrims of Plymouth" limited to 575 copies and signed by the author. This book is "an address at Plymouth, Massachusetts on the three hundredth anniversary of their landing, December 21, 1920". Halfl black cloth cover over grey boards has wear to corners and caps. Boards and spine are straight. Binding is tight. Pages clean and appear unread. Dust jacket is tattered at edges with a chip at the spine area and is protected by a clear Brodart cover. These two items came from the estate of Jane Schotland, of Tucson. In an article found on AmericanAncestors, titled "Unmasking Hannah Stover, Schotland traces her ancestry back to The Mayflower. ; Signed by Author .

[mostly 1920s-1930s], [Berlin and Charlottenburg] - Custom linen box, gilt-stamped lettering ("Werbeentwürfe - E. Teschemacher") in brown leather label affixed to front board; about 16 x 20 inches; contains mock-ups, preliminary and finished illustrations and designs for houses, advertisements, bookplates, letterheads, calendars, announcements, and more -- even hand-painted decorative motifs in Art Nouveau-style. Various sizes, on paper, heavy cardstock, and onionskin; and in ink, pencil, or full-color painting. Some duplicates, but well over 100 distinct designs. Highlights include full-color paintings for Tiergarten Nuremberg (a tiger's face), Aerozon Fabrik, women's swimwear; and ink drawings for Minimax ("Das Schönste Geschenk!"), Moton (a pesticide), Rapsch, Kriegsbund der Offizierfrauen. Numerous pencil drawings range from hastily brain-stormed sketches, to typographic experiments, and detailed streetscapes and scenes. Some projects are available from start to finish -- a pencil sketch, turned presentation in ink, and the final printed product. Erich Teschemacher was an architect, painter, poster artist, and graphic designer, educated at Unterrichtsanstalt des Kunstgewerbemuseums in Berlin. He was married to the commercial artist Marga Renner, and echoes of her resonate in this collection as well: a notebook of 10 embroidery designs in pencil and color, and two different exhibition announcments for a show of modern residential interiors.
