Toi et Moi (hand-painted vellum)

Librairie Block, Paris 1920 - Paris: Librairie Block (no date, but 1920's). 12mo, 148 pp. Paintings by Z. Z. de Vesley. Quarter vellum and hand-painted marbled boards with hand-painted watercolor illustrations at corners and spine, top edge gilt. Original bookmark ribbon still in place. Very modest, light shelfwear, faint dampstain at lower fore edge corners of pages, a uniquely beautiful binding, between very good plus and near fine. Paul Geraldy (1885-1983), French poet and playwright, may have been born for Valentine's Day. A walking compendium of romantic quotes, his Toi at Moi - probably his most famous oeuvre - is a collection of poetry dealing with the mysteries of love. Artist de Vesley's painted vellum binding, using chimerical ink-pastels, matches the mood in a way which defies words. One envisions this having been at one time proffered as the consummately heart-touching Valentine to -what lady fair ? It is the woman who chooses the man who will choose her (Geraldy). Maybe back in the roaring twenties, that happened, when this little opus was itself young. A painted melody of enchanting visual aspect -as we say now, curb appeal - and words of rending tone. Certainly unique, and not replaceable. Please review scans. L-42n [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Diary of Samuel Pepys

London - G. Bell and Sons. Ltd. 1920 - A handsome set of The Diary of Samuel Pepys with a portrait of Pepys to frontispiece of of volume one, from the pictures by Sir Godfrey Kneller in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Transcribed by the late Rev. Mynors Bright M. A. from the shorthand manuscript in the Pepysian Library, Magdalene College, Cambridge. Edited, with additions and a preface by Henry B. Wheatley and with Particulars of the Life of Samuel Pepys to front of first volume. Samuel Pepys FRS, MP, JP, (23 February 1633 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century, and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London. Condition: In a handsome half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart with only minor shelfwear and the very occasional mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout but with some foxing and offsetting from binding to endpapers. Overall: NEAR FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The first printing was 5000 copies and this scarce second printing was only 3000 copies. Bright and nearly fine with just light offset to the front endpaper from item previously laid in. The dust jacket, which is ONE OF THE SCARCEST FITZGERALD JACKETS, shows extensive professional repair, most noticeably on spine and at head of front panel where--unable to determine the correct text for what would appear to be "2nd Large Printing" (only "ge Printing" remain)--the conservationist opted to fill in with the orange, background color. Fortunately the W.E. Hill cover illustration, depicting a scene from "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" is wholly intact. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fine original portrait drawing of the composer in half-profile by the Viennese artist Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971)

      - "[Milhaud] was associated with the avant garde of the 1920s, whose abundant production reflects all musical genres. A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, his music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove onlineDolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack) was born in Vienna and educated there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States. Signed by the artist with initials and with the composer's name to upper right corner. Undated, but most probably Vienna, ca. 1920. Executed in black pencil on the blank side of a sheet of stationery carrying the letterhead of Universal Edition in Vienna. 286 x 222 mm. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Irving, Constance] A Child's Book of Hours

Humphrey Milford, Oxford University Press n.d. (ca. 1920), London - Large folio. Original color pictorial paper covered boards, cloth spine. IN ORIGINAL PRINTED LIGHT BROWN WRAPPER WITH PICTORIAL COVER AND LETTERING IN BLACK AND RED. One of the more cunning and unusual children's books of the early 1900's, this mammoth book was expertly produced with strong linen hinges, and all the pages printed onto very thick cardboard leaves. With such mechanical limitiations to overcome, the publishers succeeded in producing a monumentally pleasing work with brightly colored illustrations in the form of full-page color images, half-page colored line drawings and head and tailpieces, initials and embellishments throughout by Constance Irving. The book is seldom seen in its original wrapper. This copy is extremely fine with the wrapper in very good plus condition, onlys slight fraying and wrinkling. [Attributes: First Edition]

Tours Maison Alfred Mame et Fils (c. 1920) - Quarto. 127pp., +(16)ff. One of sixteen copies, with a signed original gouache for one of the sixteen color plates by Neziere, opposite p.63. Highly colored and caricature-like in style, the painting illustrates "L'Ane et le Petit Chien (The Little Dog and the Donkey)." Additionally, each text page is illustrated in black and white. Raymond de la Neziere's work was featured in many of the popular magazines of his era, and it is often viewed as a precursor to French comics. He began working as a book illustrator in 1892. Neziere's illustrations are recognized for their humorous and expressive style, and his characters are often anthropomorphic animals. Unbound, as issued, with panels of pictorial wrapper covers. Protected in a cloth-backed marbled portfolio. Light foxing to a few sheets, else fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Mounted Riflemen in Sinai and Palestine. The story of New Zealand's crusade

Whitcombe and Tombs 1920 - Near fine internally, pgs 175, many illustrations. Original stiffened paper dust jacket very good, has minor marks as shown in photo . Briscoe Moore served as an officer in the Auckland Mounted Rifles and used his experience to record the war effort of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles following the Gallipoli campaign. This record therefore fills a vital area in conjunction with the official records of the three Mounted Rifles regiments of the NZEF. The text covers New Zealand effort in the entire campaign of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 1916 to the end of the war. In the words of the author the "primary objective has been a description of things as experienced by the men concerned". This book does great justice to that ideal. Important and extremely rare part of the war record of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Particularly rare in such excellent condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Sammlung von 4 (3 eigenh. und 1 ms.) Briefen mit U.

Wien und Prag, 4.VI.-1.VIII. 1920 bzw. o. D. - Zusammen 10½ SS. (Qu.-)8vo bzw. 4to. The Waggoner and other Poems

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd.,, 1920. Octavo. Green cloth with paper spine label. With the dust jacket. Pencilled ownership inscription, partially erased, of the [Henry] Hamilton Fyfe at C[rewe] H[ouse], 1920. Slight crumpling head and tail of the spine, jacket a little rubbed and with corresponding chipping at spine ends and corners of the turn-ins, a very good copy. First edition, second issue. Of an edition of 500, 250 copies were bound in purple cloth for immediate issue, 100 sets of sheets were sent to NY for Knopf's American edition, and the remaining 150 bound up in green cloth later in 1920. Extremely uncommon in jacket in either issue. Blunden's first trade publication, The Waggoner was issued with the encouragement and assistance of Siegfried Sassoon to whom Blunden had sent some of his work in his capacity as literary editor of the Daily Herald. The previous owner of this copy, Hamilton Fyfe, was a roving correspondent and an innovative editor, who reported from both fronts during the First World War. He was "sent to France in August 1914. Despite the difficulties imposed upon all journalists by the military censorship, within three weeks Fyfe secured a memorable success with his account of the retreat from Mons … In 1915 Fyfe was transferred from the western to the eastern front. He travelled from Petrograd through Galicia to Bucharest. Back in Russia in 1916, he reported Rasputin's murder … " (ODNB). In July 1918 he replaced H.G. Wells at Crewe House, Northcliffe's propaganda HQ.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1920. Illustrated by Ruth Cobb. Small octavo. Pale blue quarter morocco over patterned handmade-paper covered boards, front side lettered in gilt, navy top-stain, oatmeal coloured endpapers. Original hand-painted frontispiece tipped-in, 7 engraved plates by Cobb. Spine slightly faded, one or two spots to text block, otherwise an excellent copy. First edition, presentation copy. Inscribed by the author on the dedication page; "This book is dedicated to Sophie Lieck, the child who helped to make it, and is presented to her by the author". At page 82, the last page of chapter seven, Lieck has carefully inscribed the first stanza, Canto IV of Byron's 'Childe Harold': "I stood in Venice, on the Bridge of Sighs; A palace and a prison on each hand; I saw from out the wave of her structure's rise As from the stroke of the enchanter's wand: A thousand years their cloudy wings expand Around me, and a dying Glory smiles O'er the far times, when many a subject land Look'd to the winged Lion's marble pines, Where Venice sate in state, throned on her hundred isles.
