      - (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "Home, James" with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily and other characters. Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        A Savant's Vendetta

London: Arthur Pearson. (1920). First. First English edition (previously published in the U.S. as The Uttermost Farthing). Cheap paper browned, small spot on the front board, a very good or better copy. This copy Inscribed by Freeman: "P.M. Stone from R. Austin Freeman with cordial good wishes. 3rd April 1939." One of the author's scarcest titles, presumably so because of the execrable leftover wartime paper used in its manufacture. Very seldom found, and never signed or inscribed. .

Very good+ condition with some signs of external wear. Very firm binding. Small paperdefect on pages 349-352. Otherwise in excellent condition. Extremely rare publication on the most controversial authorship question in the history of Literature. Includes for example: The Stratfordian View, character of the problem and method of Solution, The Author: general features, The Author: Special characteristics, The search and discovery. Conditions fulfilled. Edward de Vere as Lyric poet, The Lyric poetry of Edward De Vere, Records and Early life of de Vere, Early Manhood, Manhood of de Vere, Middle Period, Dramatic Foreground, Poetic Self-Revelation - The Sonnets, Dramatic Self-Revelation - Hamlet, Chronological Summary of Edward de Vere and Shakespeare ( The Tempest etc. John Thomas Looney (14 August 1870 ?- 17 January 1944) was an English school teacher who is best known for having originated the Oxfordian theory, which claims that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (1550?-1604) was the true author of Shakespeare's plays. Looney came from a Methodist religious background, but later converted to the rationalistic Religion of Humanity, becoming a leader of its church in Tyneside. After the failure of the local church, Looney turned to the Shakespeare authorship question, publishing in 1920 his theory that de Vere was the author of most of the poems and plays published in Shakespeare's name. He later argued that de Vere had also written works published under the names of other poets. Looney's book begins by outlining many of the familiar anti-Stratfordian arguments about Shakespeare of Stratford's supposedly poor education and unpoetic personality. He also criticises the methods adopted by many previous anti-Stratfordians, especially the Baconian tendency to search for ciphers. Looney considers it unlikely that an author who wished to conceal his identity would leave such messages. He then goes on to identify the influence of Frank Harris's book The Man Shakespeare, which uses the plays to find evidence of Shakespeare's beliefs and interests. Looney states that it is possible to use this method to identify the type of person who must have written the works. He considered that lower class characters were portrayed as buffoons and that the author had no sympathy for the middle-classes. He was, however, dedicated to old-fashioned feudal ideals of nobility and service. He also believed in a highly structured, dutiful and ordered society. For Looney the plays expressed a distinct political vision that combined elements of feudalism and modern scepticism towards traditional religion. He also believed that events and characters in the plays must correspond to the life of the author. Studying the biographies of Elizabethan aristocrats, he became convinced that Edward de Vere's career and personal experience could be mapped onto the action of the plays. Since de Vere died in 1604, many years before a number of Shakespeare's works appeared, Looney argued that there is an abrupt change in publication history and in the style of plays apparently written after 1604. Unusually, Looney argued that The Tempest was not the work of Oxford/Shakespeare, but of another author. It had been mistakenly added to the canon. He argued that its style and the "dreary negativism" it promoted were inconsistent with Shakespeare's "essentially positivist" soul, and so could not have been written by Oxford. He also suggested that the evidence of other writers' hands in late plays such as Pericles, Prince of Tyre implied that the author had died, leaving them unfinished. Such works were completed and published by others, as were the sonnets, the dedication page of which implied to Looney that the author was deceased. Looney expanded his views in later publications, especially his 1921 edition of de Vere's poetry. Looney suggested that de Vere was also responsible for some of the literary works published under the names of Arthur Golding, Anthony Munday and John Lyly. (Wikipedia)

1920s-1950. Archive of Bertram D. Hulen, Author, and noted international correspondent of the New York Times. Bertram Hulen, Washington Bureau correspondent at the New York Times, was known as the dean of State Department reporters. He had more than twenty-five years?' experience covering the State Department and White House and was the author of a highly regarded book, ?"Inside The State Department.?" Hulen was killed along with a dozen other American correspondents on July 12, 1949 in a plane crash near Bombay, India. The party was returning from an inspection of Indonesia at the invitation of the Netherlands government. This archive consists of letters and mementos dating from the 1920s up to the immediate aftermath of his death. Most of the journalistic items are letters from colleagues and friends, many congratulatory, commenting on the publication of his book. There are some interesting letters from correspondents, telling about their assignments. Person letters to his wife tell of his work, the life of a foreign correspondent, and some of the more interesting of his assignments, especially on the campaign trail with presidential candidates. There are many letters and telegrams of condolence written to his wife and to the New York Times, after his death. Also included are credentials of one type or another, issued for special assignments, invitations, and a file of correspondence and records related to Hulen?'s family genealogy. Specifically, the contents include a telegram of condolence, to Mrs. Hulen, from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, a 26?" photo of President Coolidge and the White House Press Corp, taken in 1929, a film roll, sent by the Netherlands government, of the time the group of correspondents spent in Indonesia, a portrait of Hulen, a letter of condolence from poet Strickland Gillilan, a cocktail recipe sent to Hulen from the USSR Embassy in the aftermath of a reception there, a letter from Cordell Hull, another from Joseph Grew, both Secretaries of State, a detailed 1932 letter from Nelson T. Johnson of the China Legation of the United States, about conditions in China, specifically about the Japanese belligerence. There are telegrams of shock in the days immediately following Hulen?'s death, many from noted New York Times reporters of the day, and dozens of letters from politicians, diplomats, journalists. One invitation is to the birthday celebration given for King Alexander I, from the Minister of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. A number of letters are from his colleagues at the New York Times, including Arthur Sulzberger. And much more, including an invitation to a meeting of ?"The Hitler Gang.?"

        Peoples Of All Nations

Educational Book Co., London, 1920, Cloth, Book Condition: Good, First EditionSize: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, 7 volumes. 5436 pages. Approximately 15 kilograms total book weight. Not dated but circa 1920. Blue cloth boards; front boards embossed and tooled in black and blind; gilt titles at spines. Volume 1 only endpapers starting to split at gutter; minimal marking; negligible foxing; some wear to boards predominantly at head and foot of spines. VERY SCARCE SET IN GOOD COLLECTABLE CONDITION. PEOPLES OF ALL NATIONS: THEIR LIFE TODAY AND THE STORY OF THEIR PAST BY OUR FOREMOST WRITERS OF TRAVEL ANTHROPOLOGY & HISTORY: ILLUSTRATED WITH UPWARDS OF 5000 PHOTOGRAPHS, NUMEROUS COLOUR PLATES, AND 150 MAPS EDITED BY J.A. HAMMERTON. 'Peoples and nations are words that have been much on tongue and pen in recent years. Since the outbreak of the Great War national spirit has been more active in the minds of men than at any other time in history. By its very existence the League Of Nations recognizes the ineluctable fact of nationalism, though an eminent statesman, indescribing the spirit of nationalism as "the curse of Europe" looks to the League somehow to abolish that spirit, and one of our seers, among his after-war visions, has seen a "world state," in which, presumably, national distinctions are blurred and all humanity exists in some strange neutral tint. A proper knowledge of the races of mankind that are sharing with us in the life of the globe today is essential to anyone who would lay claim to be decently educated. It scarcely needed the Great War to make intelligent persons understand how the complex machinery of modern civilization has brought peoples of very distant areas of the earth into a relationship, the closeness of which is often realized only when some temporary breakdown in that machinery occurs. The war at least made plain to the most unobservant that no nation can live unto itself alone, and in that degree it stimulated the sort of study which this work seeks to advance. It was determined that the task of presenting and entirely new picture of the post-war world inits living actuality should be attempted, and , after due consideration, the national unit was found to offer the most practical method of treatment. By arranging the nations of the world in their alphabetical order, rather than following any geographical sequence, a pleasing variety of subject resulted. Merely to describe the peoples of all nations in their habits as they live, and to illustrate them profusely, did not seem adequate to the purpose in hand; hence the historical chapters, in which every nation's story is briefly retold by skilled historians.' Very heavy set that will require additional postage for International Customers.

His Majesty's Stationery Office, London 1920 - Offered here is a scarce official government publication from Churchill's period as Secretary of State for War and Air - a Memorandum to Parliament regarding his Army Estimates for 1920-21 - meant to accompany his speech to Parliament of 23 February 1920. In January 1919, when he became Secretary of State for War and Air, Winston Churchill was only in his early 40s. Nonetheless, he was already a polarizing national figure who had already held several important Cabinet positions and been a force in national politics for nearly two decades. And he was already steeped in the politics, strategy, tactics, and realities of war. As a young man, he had seen and fought in wars on several continents, as both an insightful war correspondent and a professional soldier. In the First World War, Churchill's experience was truly singular, having served both in the Cabinet and on the front. Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty until 1915 and then, after assuming questionable blame for the Dardanelles tragedy, served as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches, before being politically rehabilitated and returned to the Cabinet, before the war's end, as Minster of Munitions. As the new Secretary of State for War and Air in January 1919, Churchill immediately faced two overarching challenges: to demobilize the army that had fought the First World War, and to replace it with the army that would be prepared to fight future wars. On 23 February 1920, Churchill presented "The Army Estimates for 1920-21" to the House of Commons, announcing the final phases of demobilization and the replacement of the WWI army with "an entirely new Volunteer Army". The original government document offered here is Churchill's memorandum to Parliament "Issued in Amplification of the Speech of the Secretary of State introducing the Army Estimates for 1920-21." The two paragraph introduction by Churchill is dated 21 January, two days prior to Churchill's speech to Parliament. The Memorandum is intended to prepare the Parliamentary ground for the budgetary plow with what Churchill calls in his page 2 introduction "the interesting details". Churchill's speech to Parliament made the case for a very different army, bolstered by Churchill's assessment of major evolutions in strategic realities and the nature and mechanics of warfare itself. Churchill's memorandum offered here substantiates with details his requests and considerations, summarizing lessons of the war, the requirements of "the Future Army", and discussing a broad range of training, personnel policies, and organizational priorities. By all accounts, Churchill handled the mammoth task of demobilizing nearly 3.5 million British soldiers with success. Creating and sustaining a modern army proved more frustrating for Churchill, who found himself: "in charge of a War Office without a war, committed to economies". (See Martin Gilbert, Official Biography, Volume IV, p.506.) This very scarce document encapsulates much of Churchill's effort with respect to the army and offers a unique and substantial window into his time at the War Office. By 1921, he would be eager to leave the War Office, frustrated the lack of outlet for his talents and by differences with his Prime Minister. He would become Secretary of State for the Colonies in February 1921 and would not return to a military Cabinet post until the onset of the Second World War in 1939. This original Memorandum is in superlative, virtually mint, condition. There is absolutely no wear, no soiling, and no age-toning to either the covers or contents. Even the original string at the binding is bright, clean, and perfect. The only markings are official-looking ink stamped pagination (159-177) at the top right corners, indicating that this publication was likely once bound, which would explain the superlative condition. The final two portraits of the volume, and the final two pictures above, appear to have been added separately and are both signed byAlyn Williams underneath. The first colour portrait has been signed in pencil by Alyn Williams. The British miniaturist Alyn Williams (1865-1955), was President of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters who numbered among his subjects King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Hetravelled frequently to the United States during the winter to paint prestigious American patrons, and American artists such as Josephi maintained London studios. Books for the collector, among them George Charles Williamson's Portrait Miniatures of 1897 and Dudley Heath's Miniatures of 1905, generated an expanding audience for the form. The aims of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers are to esteem, protect and practise the traditional 16th Century art of miniature painting emphasising the infinite patience needed for its fine techniques. Its patron is His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. The society was founded in 1896 by Alyn Williams, in which year it had its inaugural exhibition in the Modern Gallery, devoted exclusively to contemporary miniature paintings. Condition: The binding is firm. There is some slight wear to the extremities including slight bumping and discolouration. Internally the pages are bright and clean with the odd mild spot.       Paris: B. Sirver. First edition. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Cloth spine. . Very Good. N.d., circa 1920. Scarce, with only a single copy located on OCLC FirstServe (in Newark), and curiously not showing up in Gallica, the online catalogue of BNF. Folio, 32.5 by 24 cm. Unpaginated, 36 pp. With nine color plates, plus cover pastedown (an illustration not repeated within). A delightful, arch series of comparisons of animals and human types resembling them. The animals include a monkey, a giraffe, a marabou, a marmot, a duck, a parrot, a rabbit, an owl, and a vulture. Each of the sections has a title page decorated with elegant Art Nouveau ornamentation, followed by a text page that features a small vignette sized illustration of the particular animal. Facing this page is the human equivalent. The text itself compares and contrasts the two, with a knowing, pointed tone. The artwork, with all its whimsy, has a touch of darkness to it, and one can say that it pays as much homage to surreal and Dada influences as to Art Nouveau. Light wear. Hinges slightly loose.
