[Salesman Sample Books. 4 Books Containing Over 150 Sample Packages for Chocolates and Candies from Neilson's, Fry's, Lowney's, and Cadbury's]

[circa 1920]. () Very good. Four original salesman sample books containing packaging for chocolates and candies. Approximately 153 samples of packaging (wrappers and boxes) from Neilson's (23 samples), Fry's (46 samples), Lowney's (75 samples) and Cadbury's (9 samples). Each company's samples housed in folding portfolio and mounted on either linen or paper. A few samples have detached from mounting, but all 4 folders appear complete, save for possibly one sample missing from the Fry's folder, which also has some dampstaining. Else all folders and samples in an excellent state of preservation. An extraordinary collection of salesman's samples of candy and chocolate packaging from the early 1900s from Neilson's, Fry's, Lowney's, and Cadbury's candy companies. Includes wrappers and boxes for a variety of treats. Many of the samples are fantastic chromolithographs. A visually-striking collection..

Dunmow Sept. 8, 1920 - A fine autograph letter from H.G. Wells signed. Written in ink on stationary printed "Easton Glebe, Dunmow". Presented with a portrait of the author from a photograph. 21.5 x 17 cm, presented together with the 14 by 10 centimeter portrait and handsomely matted framed and glazed. Extremely well preserved and handsomely presented. A FINE ONE PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER WITH A BOLD SIGNATURE IN THE HAND OF H.G. WELLS, one of the greatest masters of science fiction and most popular turn-of-the-century authors. In the letter Wells excuses himself from participation in a review as his time is fully occupied, he then expresses a desire to hear from the recipient as the "scheme develops". His signature, "Very Sincerely H. G. Wells" is bold and flourished. Though best remembered for his classic science fiction novels such as THE TIME MACHINE, Well’s was a truly multifaceted writer. He wrote additionally humorous novels of modern morals that were extremely popular in their time. He also wrote serious scientific reviews and sociological and historical papers that remain highly regarded. He was highly involved in politics and is remembered as being somewhat of a ladies man.         The Complete Poems of the Bronte Sisters

London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., c.1920-23., 1920. 3 vols., 8vo. Finely bound in recent full dark blue morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, gilt border to covers, top edge gilt. Held in a protective blue cloth slip case. A fine, attractive set. The 'Poems' represent the Brontes first published work. On her twenty-first birthday, Charlotte Bronte had asked Poet Laureate Robert Southey about her prospects as a writer. 'Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life' was his response. Granting this view of women, the sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne adopted pseudonyms to hide their sex, and published a joint collection 'Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell' (May 1846). Although the book failed to attract interest the sisters were undeterred, and began work on their first fiction- Charlotte continued to use the name 'Currer Bell' for her first two novels, 'Jane Eyre' (1847), and 'Shirley' (1849).

- Vortitel fleckig. OCLC locates a single copy at the Henry Ford Museum, that is almost certainly the same or similar to this with 19 pages (we assume they mean leaves) and attributes the date of 1920. Although this copy is undated that seems a reasonable guess. .

      - Offered is an exceptional find of a scrapbook album of early Hollywood photos that belonged to Academy Award nominated set designer Harry Oliver, including photos of miniature sets created by Oliver and photos of him working on the sets. Also included in this offering is a folding file containing numerous letters concerning Oliver's career in Hollywood. The album has 49 vintage photos in addition to many clippings from period newspapers. Most of this photo material seems to date in the 1920's. The file of over fifty letters and other pieces of correspondence includes several written by Oliver to his mother about his Hollywood experiences given back to him by his mother obviously. One outstanding letter on MGM letterhead is signed by Cedric Gibbons, husband of Delores del Rio and an important art designer in Hollywood in his own right who is credited with designing the Oscar statuette. Some of the letters are in their original envelopes and most of the letters date from the early 1930's. In one letter to his mother, Oliver tells of Irving Thalberg giving him a pat on the back for a job well done. The photos, mostly large format, include some studio publicity shots for movies Oliver worked on, but there are also many photos showing miniatures he made for various movies. Some of the miniatures are so life-like you would swear you are looking at real life scenes. One of the miniatures is of a train wreck on a bridge over a canyon. Several of the photos concern a movie that starred Jack Pickford (brother of Mary Pickford) titled The Hillbilly. (One of the most unlikely of roles for the cosmopolitan Pickford). Oliver also designed the bizarre looking facade of the Irvin Willat Film Studio in Hollywood, and there is an early original photo of it in the scrapbook. The main house of this studio is preserved in L.A. and now known as the Willat-Spadena Witch House. There is another original photo of this house in the album showing it as a miniature model. It is because of his spooky looking architectural design of the Willat Studio, and also his creation of the well known Los Angeles landmark Van de Kamp Windmill buildings, that Oliver has developed the reputation of being one of the very first "imagineers" in modern design. Many of his movie sets also reflected his vibrant imagination. Another wonderful photo shows Oliver standing behind a group of midget actors. Photo predates the Wizard of Oz by many years but some of the faces look familiar. Several other films besides Hillbilly represented in the photo album. A few photos are personal showing Oliver and his wife and friends at poolside. The letters show that even a Hollywod veteran as well regarded as Oliver was having trouble making money in the Depression years. Some of the letters are rejection slips or letters concerning projects he was interviewing for. A few of the letters have Studio letterheads including one of RKO Pictures signed by its president Sol Lesser. Oliver was a writer as well as artist, and later in life he settled in the desert community of Borrego Springs and wrote the well known Desert Rat Scrap Book. (The file includes a Palm Springs magazine featuring an article by Oliver from his Desert Rat later period of life.) The letters show that even as early as the beginng of the 1930's Oliver was planning on a getaway from Hollywood to the desert. One remarkable letter from Tristram Tupper, a noted Hollywood screen writer who became a general in WWII, indicates that it may have been Tupper who got Oliver interested in the desert. Unfortunately this letter is missing one of its small sheets of paper but most of it is still there. Scarce material. The best Hollywood archive I have come across in years of scouting for Hollywood memorabilia. Condition of the photo album rather rough from wear and tear with some of the photos having come loose. Most of the photos that belong in the album are still there and have helpful notations in dark pen written by Oliver at the edge [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Arthur Pearson, London 1920 - First English edition (previously published in the U.S. as *The Uttermost Farthing*). Cheap paper browned, small spot on the front board, a very good or better copy. This copy Inscribed by Freeman: "P.M. Stone from R. Austin Freeman with cordial good wishes. 3rd April 1939." One of the author's scarcest titles, presumably so because of the execrable leftover wartime paper used in its manufacture. Very seldom found, and never signed or inscribed.       No date circa 1920 - Quarto album, probably originally designed as a photograph album, 8x10 inches with 90 FINE ORIGINAL COLOURED WATERCOLOUR AND PENCIL DESIGNS FOR RINGS, mostly in the Art Deco style- hence the suggested date. Probably German as some German printing on the verso of some designs. Designs on various shades of card and transparent paper and mounted 6 to a sheet. Some designs containing the designs size notes. Very decorative and of fine quality- unsigned as is usual for jewellery art. The album appears to be complete as such. A rare example of this type of original art work.

Memories of a Life spent between the Bread and the Fishes and the Days when all Cares were forgotten

[Reading: privately printed, n.d., ca. late 1920s] - Nostalgic privately produced memoir of angling in the Thames Valley a century ago. Chapman was a Reading tobacconist and a keen fisher, and he recounts his experiences fishing on private lakes, ponds, and local rivers, including the Kennet and Thames, as well as misadventures in boats, dense fogs, notable catches of Pike and Thames trout, and an incident of river pollution. The other copy we have seen varies slightly in the pagination and the page format. Reed and his correspondent, A.E. Hobbs, discuss the book's author and identify most of the places alluded to in Chapman's narrative, which includes a portrait of the author holding a 20-pound fish taken from the Thames. An uncommon work, produced in just a few copies, with an illuminating correspondence concerning this curious and interesting book (COARSE FISHING) Square 8vo. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. Original green textured cloth, titled stamped in gilt on upper board, speckled edges. Bookplate of O.M. Reed ("Omar") with his ownership signature dated August 1934 and annotations. Reed's draft of an essay and correspondence with A.E. Hobbs loosely inserted. Old cellotape mark along front pastedown where letter was tipped in. Fine. Not in Hampton's Angling Bibliography 1881-1949. Not in BL or OCLC [Attributes: Hard Cover]
