The Works of Charles Dickens (National Library Edition) 20 vols

Bigelow, Brown & Co., Inc, New York 1920 - A sharp, nearly Fine set of Dickens' complete works in 20 volumes. Each volume bound in red three quarter leather over cloth. Spines with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, top-edge of page block gilt. All volumes clean and sound with light wear to the corners, but likely never read.Charles Dickens is considered one of the greatest novelists of the English language (critic Harold Bloom considers him one of the greatest writers in the history of the Western World). He was easily the most widely read and popular writer of his own era and remains so today - for Dickens has never been out of print and his works have been adapted into over 200 films or television series as well as countless stage dramas. He is an iconic figure in England as well, appearing on the 10 pound note and being voted one of the "100 Greatest Britons" of all time in a 2002 BBC poll.Dickens read widely in his youth, including many picaresque works that would influence his later writing. However, his father's financial difficulties soon landed the family in debtors prison, and Dickens was forced to work long days as a child in a boot blacking factory in order to cover the family's finances. It's thought that this experience is what drove Dickens to become an advocate for social reform, a subject he often tackles in his novels. Dickens soon became a journalist and the success of his first book - Sketches By Boz, would set him on his writing career that would include such masterpieces as A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield.Dickens style is noted for its incredible skill with caricature and satire - indeed, one usually need only mutter the name of a character of his to conjure up a vision of that character's entire self. A master storyteller, his work often depicted the less savory and neglected side of England as well. The number of writers who respect or has been influenced by him is countless, and include such luminaries as Tolstoy, Orwell, and Conrad. Near Fine.

        NIGHT AND DAY

Duckworth and Company. London. 1920. FIRST EDITION, Second impression. One of a tiny handful of titles published as part of the "Covent Garden Library" a short-lived marketing ploy by Duckworth. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A stunning copy in the little tanned dust jacket with a short tear at one fold. First edition, As such, however, this issue, which eluded Kirkpatrick at least in detail, should by rights have a distinct bibliographical number under the entry for Night and Day. The number produced in this format must have been very low indeed and copies in this condition and in dust jacket are of the utmost scarcity. Rare.

W.I. SWAIN'S WESTERN SPECTACULAR PRODUCTION JESSE JAMES. "HANDS UP SHERIFF?" "THE PRISON IS NOT BUILT THAT WILL HOLD JESSE JAMES."

Newport, Ky.: The Donaldson Litho. Co., [ca. 1920]. - Chromolithographic poster, 27 1/2 x 41 3/4 inches. Several tears at edges, two which reach into the image significantly. Some chipping and loss along top left edge and lower right edge, also a bit in top right corner. Still, a striking image. Good plus. An attractive poster advertising one of W.I. Swain's popular touring Western shows, this one featuring Jesse James - who in this portrayal has an African-American as a member of his gang. The illustration shows three men on the right edge with their hands held high, while a fourth man next to them weakly drops his gun. On the left side, a cocky man in a white shirt - presumably James - points a six shooter at the men across the room, while a blonde woman in a red dress stands with one foot on a chair and the other on a desk, also pointing guns at the men. Anomalously, in the center of the image, through a window, a black man in a red shirt also points two guns at the men on the right, while inside the room, a black woman kneels and pleads with the man in the window. Colonel W.I. Swain was one of the most successful tent showmen in the South. He often toured a minstrel show, putting on a different performance every night for a week. The shows were continued by Swain's son, Kennedy, well into the 1940s.

München, Piper 1920.. 25,5 x 35,5 cm. 2 Bl., 54, (2) S., 2 Bl., OPgmt. (gering angestaubt, Buchdeckel etw. gewölbt). Sonst tadellos und fleckenfrei. Rodenberg 368.21..

        SHINA SANJU^-GAKAN

1920. [SKETCHTOUR GENRE] Fukuda Shu^taro [Bisen], artist. SHINA SANJU^-GAKAN. Tokyo, Kanao Bun'endo^, Taisho^ 9 [1920]. 2 volumes, oblong folio, 23.2 x 31.2 cm. A few years after Bun'endo^ had published the justly famous SHINA TAIKAN by the same artist, the publisher, Kanao Takejiro, assembled the same group of artisans (incuding the master printer, Nishimura Kumakichi) to craft another "take" on the scenery of China - a series of 30 "scrolls" in color woodcut embedded in a narrative shot through with a multitude of illustrations in other media. Scott Johnson in his seminal article on the sketchtour genre in ANDON 37, has called SHINA TAIKAN "the most ambitious of all the sketch-tour books." The SHINA SANJU^-GAKAN is certainly no less of an impressive achievment (and a much scarcer book). Enormously expensive to produce (It was priced at 50 Yen, impressive even by the inflationary standards of the time!) few were sold and this set is hardly ever found. Our copy has the original wraparound chitsu case with clasps intact. The chitsu itself is a work of art, depicting junks on a river. With a bit of internal foxing and a hint of hinge weakening, but overall a very nice set, complete, of an important and scarce work in the sketchtour genre:

Manuscript Herbarium Specimens of Soviet Ukraine and Caucasus

Kiev, 1920. Kiev, circa 1925-1929. A meticulous morphological herbarium of 75 preserved botanical specimens, contained in a string-tied portfolio with folding sides for protection, illustrated and titled to front, purpose-made and issued by an Education Department of the Soviet Ukraine's government, possibly the Ukrainian Institute of Popular Education. A small signed label to front board reads in Ukraine. The portfolio contains five separate folders, methodically categorizing specimens by components - roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and inflorescences. Specimens meticulously arranged onto 21 tables (leafs), each numbered and titled, with typescript caption for each specimen in both Ukrainian and Russian, including also its scientific Latin name. Folders and leafs measure approximately 25 x 35 cm. Portfolio measures approximately 27 x 37 cm. Specimens range in size, the smallest flora spanning approximately 3 x 3.5 cm, and the largest being a stem spanning approximately 21 x 22 cm. Minor wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, with remarkable, intact botanical samples. An authentic herbarium of superb quality, a substantial field work collection of 75 plant specimens, impeccably arranged by a leading Eastern European botanist. Most exceptional is the method used for preservation and display. As opposed to the usual adhesive, these specimens have been delicately mounted with thread, sewn through the pages, to uphold the physical integrity of all natural properties. Compiled not long after the first great famine in Soviet Ukraine which occurred in 1921-1923, most fittingly, the collection includes some important edible and medicinal plants. Caused by drought and crop failure concentrated in the rich grain-growing provinces of southern Ukraine, the famine claimed the lives of 1.5 - 2 million people. [MORPHOLOGICAL HERBARIUM. NKO USSR. Ukrainian Educational Supplies Trust.] In this volume the botanist compiles samples to examine plant morphology, the branch of biology dealing with the form and structure of organisms. Table 7, for example, illustrates underground stems, and Table 20 deals with monoecious and dioecious plants. Each category or folder contains the following number of specimens: 10 Roots 6 Stems 35 Leaves 7 Flowers 17 Inflorescences We find in this rare and impeccable herbarium some of the following examples: Three samples of cannabis. [Today the Ukraine is the world?'s fourth-biggest producer of industrial hemp seed, the term used to refer to cannabis strains cultivated for non-drug use. Unlike the type of Cannabis grown for marijuana, industrial hemp lacks the ingredient which causes physical or psychological narcotic effects.] The perennial nightshade Solanum tuberosum, its edible tuber commonly known as the potato Quercus Pedunculata, an oak. [The pedunculate oak of the Croatian region of Slavonia is considered a separate subspecies - the Slavonian Oak - and is a regional symbol of Slavonia and a national symbol of Croatia.] Pinus sylvestris, Scots pine, a species of pine native to Europe and Asia, ranging as far as eastern Siberia, south to the Caucasus Mountains, and north deep inside the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia. Potentilla anserina, also known as argentina anserina, and commonly as silverweed cinquefoil, used medicinally in home remedies and herbal teas. Robinia Pseudoacacia, commonly known as the black locust, which in France and Italy is the source of the renowned acacia monofloral honey. Fragaria vesca, commonly called wild strawberry. Gleditsia triacanthos, known as the honey locust, preserving here a lovely sample of its thorny stem. Berberis vulgaris, also known as European barberry or simply Barberry, is a shrub in the genus Berberis. It produces edible but sharply acidic berries, which people in many countries eat as a tart and refreshing fruit. The plant is both poisonous and medicinal. Except for its fruits and seeds, the plant is mildly poisonous. Its most potent agent is berberine, which is also known to have a number of therapeutic effects. Acer, a genus of trees or shrubs commonly known as maple, here presenting a perfectly intact leaf. Asperula odorata, or Galium odoratum, commonly known as Sweetscented Bedstraw, a flowering herbacious perennial plant native to much of Europe, from Spain and Ireland to Russia, as well as Western Siberia, Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, China and Japan. It is widely cultivated for its flowers and its sweet-smelling foliage. The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR) 1922-1991, commonly referred to as Ukraine or Soviet Ukraine, was a sovereign Soviet socialist state and one of the fifteen constituent republics of the Soviet Union. For most of its existence, it was economically and politically the second-most powerful republic of the Soviet Union, behind only the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic The present flora of Ukraine encompasses quite a large number of relicts from the Tertiary period and the Ice Age. It includes also migratory species from the north (coniferous forests, swamp vegetation), the west (deciduous trees), the south, the Crimea, and Caucasia (some deciduous trees and steppe plants), and the southwest and southeast (steppe vegetation, especially the plants of the saline soils). There are also a number of endemic forms in Ukraine, particularly on sands and rocks. The boundaries of the habitats of many plants and trees run through Ukraine: the northeastern boundary of the beech (Fagus silvatica) and silver fir (Abies alba); the eastern boundary of the sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), field maple (Acer campestre), linden (Tilia platyphyllos), and ash (Fraxinus excelsior); the southern boundary of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris); and the western boundary of the steppe cherry (Cerasus fruticosa). Human agricultural activity has greatly altered the original vegetation of Ukraine. Between 1814 and 1914 the forest area in Ukraine diminished by 30.5 percent. Only a few ancient tracts remain untouched by humans, and for their preservation they have been placed under state protection. Most of the steppe, the natural grasslands of Southern Ukraine is now under cultivation and devoted to agricultural species. Large areas of the forest belt have also been converted to agricultural use. The original vegetation of the steppe is protected on the Askaniia-Nova Biosphere Reserve. Intense long-term logging in the Carpathian Mountains has diminished the protective influence of the forests, as frequent floods and increasing erosion have shown, just to present a few examples. The Crimean Mountains are remarkable for their developed forests and rich vegetation. The western and southern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains are covered with thick, Mediterranean evergreen vegetation.. Very Good.

        Jean-Christophe

Paris - Librairie Paul Ollendorf, 1920 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Eight volumes half bound in leather with marble paper-covered boards and gilt lettering. Romain Rolland (1866-1944), French dramatist, essayist, art historian and novelist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. He was a lifelong pacifist, his book, Au-dessus de la Melee was a protest written in 1915. He was influenced by Indian philosophy and was a supporter of Gandhi, whom he met in 1931. Jean-Chrisophe was a novel in ten volumes published between 1904-12. It is usually broken up into sections; the first four volumes grouped as Jean-Christophe, the next three as Jean-Christophe a Paris and the final three as La Fin du Voyage. It tells the life story of Jean-Christophe Krafft, a highly talented musician and composer (a figureinspired by Beethoven). Although it is Jean-Christophe's story, Rolland, in imitation of Tolstoy periodically moves away from his hero to temporarily explore some other character and also to discourse on various subjects such as art, social change or feminism. Please note that this set only contains the first eight volumes and the final two volumes of La Fin du Voyage are missing. This book was previously owned by Ronald Lindsayand contains his bookplate.         ARA VOS PREC (ARA VUS PREC)

London: John Rodker, The Ovid Press. 1920 (Completed 1919). First edition, first printing. Original paper-covered boards with beige cloth spine. Initials and colophon by Edward Wadsworth. One of 264 copies, this one SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE AUTHOR. The colophon page suggests 30 signed copies were issued numbered 5-34. These are of such scarcity that it is believed that less than 30 were produced by the publisher. This copy is numbered ?'84?' in the author?'s hand. Whilst all of the pages and binding are present, the hinges are split at the black coated endpapers to both the front and rear. The pages are complete with no tears and only the occasional light finger mark to the margins. The paper-covered boards are worn to the corners and the thin cloth spine lacks the small printed label. Scarce in the first state binding and undoubtedly rare in signed state. This is the first title published by John Rodker under his Ovid Press imprint. ?"Published by Rodker early in February 1920. The first copies issued (among them presentation copies sent out by the author on February 5) were bound in black boards with yellow cloth back and paper label. The error ?'Vus?' for ?'Vos?' in the title was discovered after all the sheets had been printed and was corrected only on the label. Concerning the title, Mr Eliot wrote me on February 21, 1936: ?'The correct title of the book is Ara Vos Prec. It only happened to be Ara Vus Prec on the title page because I don?'t know Provencal, and I was quoting from an Italian edition of Dante the editor of which apparently did not know Provencal either.?"
