[Manuscript] The Adventures of Little Jack Rabbit, [together with] a specification letter by author and note from publisher relating thereto Based on nature and the actual habis of the Jack Rabbit. Scenes and surroundings are those under which the Jack Rabbit actually lives. Not a nature fake but a true to life story

Seattle. Cloth . Very Good. A lovely mock-up manuscript of a chidren's story, with many original watercolored drawings, and generally several takes on each drawing. N.d., circa 1920. Oblong quarto, 35 by 28 cm, 14 by 11 inches. Unpaginated, 118 ff. Phillips was a published author who wrote several successful children's books about the West, including "Indian Tales for Little Folks". It is unknown why this particular manuscript was never published, given how far he got in the process. (It would seem doubtful that the concerns related to copyright, since the story is easily distinguishable from Peter Rabbit, from which the author expressly did draw inspiration, and which he explicitly cites as a template in his "specifications". The most significant difference is in this story's ambition to depict the animals more realistically and as true animals, not animals dressed in human clothes. Indeed, this conceit would set this story apart from most anthropomorphic juvenile literature of the day. In this story, the young rabbit, defying his mother's warning about coyotes, ventures out into the sagebrush and has close calls with not just a coyote but also an eagle, meets several other burrowing animals and has to escape from an irrigation ditch as he desperately seeks to find his way home. Effortlessly the author educates us in the process about the lifestyle of Jack Rabbits. The drawings are mounted on heavy stock and interleaved with pages of tracing paper and a light weight paper upon which variants of the drawings are rendered. Throughout are maginal notes covering details of the book's production, in addition to the letter of instructions. Heavy foxing on some leaves. A half-title or cover sheet somewhat chewed up. The binder is loose by the front joint, and the title label on the front board is heavily rubbed.

Pra Malai: Thai Manuscript with Twenty Paintings.

      - An accordion-folded Thai manuscript measuring: 5 1/2 inches x 25 1/2 in. x 3 in. (thick) written on a thick paper in black ink, the pages without paintings are written in double columns with the words widely spaced. The text from the front is ninety-five pages, with a title on the reverse of the front cover, and ninety-six pages on the reverse side. There are a total of twenty paintings, arranged as ten sets, with one of each set on the sides that the paintings are displayed on. These are painted in colors with some gold highlighting, and include a set of seated monks in yellow robes; a set of facing divinities with different faces, colors, with gold; another set of similar facing divinties, with gold; a third set of differing, facing divinities with gold; a scene with a man being speared by a hunter with a dog, with a bleeding figure in a tree, and facing this the standing figure of the monk Pra Malai, with a male and female figure surrounded by flames; a set with a figure of the standing monk with a kneeling figure offering a steaming bowl, while two figures also bring food as an offering; a set where the standing monk is offered a flower by a blue-loinclothed man, and the man gathers flowers before mountain scenery; a set with the seated monk with offerings at a shrine, with a seated figure, three divinities with gold against a blue background; a set of two differing divinities seated before a shrine, with two other divinities facing, all with gold details; a set with a standing monk with figure in a blue loincloth, figure in a yellow loincloth with a kneeling, robed figure in attitude of reverence. These paintings illustrate the Pra Malai story, including the monk's visit to hell, and the offering of flowers to the monk by a peasant of the Himalayas. The covers are made of a thicker, folded paper, which has been folded and covered with a black lacquer. The outer covers show some chipping away of the paper, and general wear from use. The left-hand margins of the pages show some damp, with a few scattered spots, wear of the pages. This manuscript shows signs of being actually used for the traditional readings of the Pra Malai legend, and has not been restored. It was purchased by a Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, who was then attached to the American Consular Service in Bankok, in what was then Siam, in the early 1920's, and appears to have been made in Thailand in the 19th century. The scan shows one of the seated divinities, with a sample of the text and inner border. Weight: 6 lbs. Postage and packing is extra on this item. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Musik Hans Pfitzner

Vienna - A series of poems by Joseff von Eichendorff written in white ink on grey hand made paper and bound in a custom binding. The work is entitled The German Soul and features a selection of romantic songs and poems which had been set to the music of Hans Pfitzner. Pfitzner composed his cantata based on Eichendorff's poems in 1920 and it was first performed in 1921. Pfizner wrote the work as Germany was losing Alsace-Lorraine to France. Although the book is neither dated nor signed it comes from the library of Hertha Rosenbaum who was previously married to the calligrapher Rudolf von Larisch under the name Hertha Larisch-Ramsauer although she continued to exhibit her work under the name Hertha Sladky (ate least according to the catalogue of the Internationale Ausstellung Moderne Kunstlerischer Schrift held in honour of von Larisch's 70th birthday in May 1926, he, Hertha Sladky and Hertha Ramsauer all lived at the same address). Rudolf von Larisch (1856-1934) was a founder member of the Austrian Werkbund in 1912 and the Wiener Werkstatte, teaching calligraphy to Hertha (1897-1972) when she was his student. She also taught book-binding and calligraphy in her own right. The text is written in a fine (although difficult), modern, cursive hand on 16 sides, each leaf followed by a white blank leaf, all bound in a concertina format gathered at the spine with white silk cords and with hand-made paper covers. Poems include Der alte Garten, Nachtgruss, Die Norne und der Ritter. The handwriting most closely resembles that developed by von Larisch although it may also be by Sladky/Ramsauer.Hertha Ramsauer produced another illuminated edition of Eichendorff's poems for the 1926 exhibition (no. 35).       Kristiania: in Kommission bei Jacob Dybwad, 1920 (Ink stamp: Printed in Norway). - 36 pp. Original wrappers. Wrappers remargined. Signature of former owner on front wrapper. First Edition. Löwenheim-Skolem Theorem. "Many logicians would agree that Skolem and Gödel are the two greatest logicians of the [20th] century. (Wang, "Skolem and Gödel", Nordic Journal of Philosophical Logic, Vol. 1, no. 2, pp. 119-132). "The first result presented in the paper is that every well-formed formula of the first-order predicate calculus has what is now known as a Skolem normal form for satisfiability. . . . Skolem normal forms have since become one of the logician's standard tools. These forms were used, in particular, by Gödel in his proof of the completeness of quantification theory (1930). . . . After having introduced the normal form of a formula, Skolem offers (Theorem 2) a new proof of Löwenheim’s theorem. . . . He is able to fill a serious gap left open by Löwenheim in his proof. Skolem notes the use of the axiom of choice in his proof. . . . (Van Heijenoort, From Frege to Gödel, p. 252; English translation (of §1)--Logico-Combinatorial Investigations in the Satisfiability or Provability of Mathematical Propositions: A Simplified Proof of a Theorem by L. Löwenheim and Generalizations of the Theorem--in Van Heijenoort, pp. 254-63). "It seems clear that Godel read at least the statements of theorems and definitions in Löwenheim's paper, and in Skolem's 1920 paper as well. In the published version of his thesis (1930), Gödel cites Skolem (1920) explicitly: 'An analogous procedure was used by Skolem (1920) in proving Löwenheim's theorem' (Gödel 1930, pp. 108-109). . . . Skolem studied at Göttingen in the winter of 1915-1916. We do not know whether he first learned of Löwenheim's paper at Göttingen, or whether he simply read it in the Mathematische Annalen. Skolem's first paper re-proving Löwenheim's theorem (1920) introduced the notion of first-order equations and dropped the relative sum and product notation that Löwenheim had adopted from Schröder, and which originated with Peirce. Skolem's 1920 proof was thus a simplified version of Löwenheim's original proof using algebraic notations and the axiom of choice. Skolem did not claim that Löwenheim's original proof was wrong or incomplete; he only said he was giving a simpler and clearer proof. . . . Stated in the language of the calculus of relatives, Löwenheim's celebrated theorem about first-order logic simply fell out of what was for him an obvious technical generalization of something that was more interesting in the calculus of relatives, that is, a technique that enables him to say what the cardinalities of universes can be from the analysis of the form of an equation. It was left to Skolem to extract the essence of Löwenheim's theorem and state it in the language of first-order logic. . . . [A]lthough Löwenheim's paper was published in 1915 in the premier mathematical journal in the world, it was not until Skolem's paper of 1920 that Löwenheim's theorem received any attention. . . . Skolem's 1920 paper . . . begins with a theorem known today as the Skolem normal form. . . . Skolem's 1920 proof of Löwenheim's theorem uses the axiom of choice. It is quite simple. It is also not Löwenheim's proof, although the ideas are present in Löwenheim in a less clear form and in a longer proof. . ."         The Coming of Bill

Herbert Jenkins 1920 - London red cloth .The book is fine no defect the wrapper has had minor restoration to spine ends, otherwise is probably very close to how it was when first published, with synopsis of malcolm sage on front flap and 3 bindles titles on rear flap. These rare wrappers never appear on book sites and the only other copy I have seen is another copy I had listed last year .I do not know for sure how many other copies have survived but know of 4 , including the copy in macilvaine. None of the major wodehouse collections that have been auctioned in the last 10 years including James Heinemann and Michael Carter had a copy with wapper. The copy in macilvaine is badly soiled with tears and some chipping so this copy may be as good as it gets [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Fairy Walk

[n.p.]: , 1920. - A Wonderfully Ethereal Watercolor from the Master of Children's Fantasy IllustratorsTIMLIN, William M. "The Fairy Walk." Original pen, ink and watercolor drawing, titled on lower left hand corner, signed on lower right hand corner and marked with Timlin's owl device. Image size: 20 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches: 525 x 320mm.Matted, framed and glazed.William M. Timlin ranks alongside Dulac, Rackam, and Pogany as one of the greatest children's fantasy illustrators, despite his having published only one book in his lifetime (The Ship that Sailed to Mars, 1923). He died before his second great work, The Building of a Fairy City could be completed. The Fairy Walk depicts an elegant young lady in conversation with an ethereal figure sitting on a fence and holding onto a branch of a tree, observed by four ravens and a trio of mischievous looking goblins. It is quite possible that this drawing is a finished watercolor for The Building of a Fairy City. It is beautifully executed and very large, drawn with finesse and detail, indicative of an important work. Even though this drawing is dated 1920, three years before The Ship that Sailed to Mars was published, Timlin had been working on drawings for The Building of a Fairy City for many years previous to the publication of his first book.William Mitcheson Timlin (11 April 1892 - 1943) was an architect and illustrator. He was born in Ashington, Northumberland, the son of a colliery foreman. He showed talent for drawing at Morpeth Grammar School, and received a scholarship to the Armstrong College of Art in Newcastle. In 1912, he joined his parents in South Africa where he completed his training in art and architecture and remained for the rest of his life.Timlin designed a number of important buildings in Kimberley including Kimberly Boys' High School while pursuing his interest in art, turning out a large number of watercolour fantasies in addition to oils, pastels, etchings and periodical illustrations. His work was regularly exhibited. He also wrote stories and composed music.Timlin worked on The Ship that Sailed to Mars for two years. It was started as a diversion for his son in 1921. The work expanded until in its final form it had 48 pages of text and 48 color plates showing remarkable flights of fantasy. Timlin sent the book to publishers George Harrap, who were delighted with the illustrations and the calligraphic text, deciding to print it without typesetting. The book has since become a fantasy classic. The film rights to the book were purchased in the United States, where Timlin enjoyed great popularity. Alan Horne in The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators describes the book as a masterpiece and "the most original and beautiful children's book of the 1920s."Timlin illustrated many South African travel books and prepared illustrations for a book titled The Building of a Fairy City which was never published. He died in Kimberley, Northern Cape in 1943.
