        Die Landpartie. Aus meiner Jungszeit

[Berlin: H Birkholz Druck-Werkstätte, 1920] - Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), known as the Raffael der Hinterhöfe (the Rafael of the back tenements), was an enormously popular German artist whose work chronicling Berlin life was most commonly reproduced for mass distribution in periodicals. He was a member of the Berlin Secession and a friend of Max Liebermann, Kathe Kollwitz, and Hans Baluschek. Zille also produced a few series of erotic drawings for limited, private circulation, including Zwanglose Geschichten und Bilder (Gurlitt, 1919), Die Landpartie (1920) and Hurengespräche (privately printed in 1921 under the pseudonym W. Pfeifer, with a false date of 1913). Zille was prosecuted for obscenity for his 1925 lithograph Modellpause in the periodical Simplicissimus, (depicting 8 models in various stages of undress). Die Landpartie, "a little humoresque", produced by ZIlle himself, demonstrates his eye for ordinary life and his erotic flair. Rosenbach identifies two issues in the first edition of 100 copies, issue A on white Werkdruckpapier, with lithographic limitation statement on the verso of the first leaf and a ruled square for numbering; and issue B (as here), on yellowish laid paper stock (auf gelblichem, geripptem Bütten), with a different formulation of the limitation statement, entirely in the artist's hand, concluding with these words: "Dieses Exemplar hat die Nummer 92 und is von mir koloriert, H. Zille". Rosenbach states that copies of issue A numbered higher than 58 are not known (with one exception, a copy of issue B numbered 20); other known copies of issue B are numbered 78 to 99. The present copy was sold at auction in 1954 and is noted by Rosenbach; since then it has been in an American private collection. Rare and unusual First edition, no. 92 of 100 numbered copies, signed in ink by the artist: "Dieses Exemplar hat die Nummer 92 und is von mir koloriert, H. Zille". Folio. 8 lithographic plates (containing 11 images and handwritten text), printed rectos only, colored by the artist. Manuscript statement of limitation on verso of title leaf. Drab wrappers, stitched. Some toning of paper stock, small marginal flaws, otherwise clean and fresh. Near fine. Oschilewski 12; Rosenbach, 109-116b (noting this copy). Provenance: Hauswedell Auktion 58 (1954), lot 2630; American private collection [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Night and Day

London: Duckworth and Company,, 1920. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A stunning copy in the little tanned dust jacket with a short tear at one fold. First edition, second impression. One of a tiny handful of titles published as part of the "Covent Garden Library" a short-lived marketing ploy by Duckworth. As such, however, this issue, which eluded Kirkpatrick at least in detail, should by rights have a distinct bibliographical number under the entry for Night and Day. The number produced in this format must have been very low indeed and copies in this condition and in dust jacket are of the utmost scarcity. Rare.

Peter written by F.B Meyer with ALS by F.B. Meyer

      - Fine F.B. Meyer letter. three page 1920 ALS entirely in Meyer's hand written to Lady Kinnaird. Lord and Lady Kinnaird were close, personal friends of Meyer's. Living in Scotland, he would often travel and stay at their estate while writing, even the preface of his Life and the Way Through It being dedicated to them. Lady Kinnaird was an ardent Christian philanthropist and founded the YWCA. In the letter, Lord Kinnaird seems to have lost his vision. Meyer writes very personally and closes with a hymn which he urges Lady Kinnaird to read to her husband on Meyer's behalf. The whole is tipped in to the ffep of a copy of Peter by Meyer, which is also inscribed to Lady Kinnaird by Meyer. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Singapore Photograph Album

Personal photograph album containing 144 black and white photographs, 4 cards showing printed charcoal portraits of local people additionally 7 very small photographic images cut out in the shape of the image itself are dotted through the album in a light-hearted style. 22pp. Photograph corners hold most photos in place, many neatly, and sometimes humourously, captioned in white ink. Most photographs measure 6 x 8.5cm, a number 9.5 x 13.8cm and others 11.9 x 16.2cm; a single larger photograph shows the R.A.F. Yacht Club from the water (16.4 x 22.2cm). The album measures 27.5 x 37cm. Business card of H. Hussain, Singapore, manufacturer of Malacca Canes Walking Sticks laid down front pastedown. Upper cover of the leather bound album features a traditional Chinese scene in colour. Lower cover starting to detach, but the album, though worn with loss at corners and head and tail of spine, is still sound. A personal photograph album compiled by a former member of the RAF stationed at Seletar in Singapore who was also an active member of the Seletar Yacht Club. The album features a great many interesting scenes of the RAF base, the Yacht Club and other places the RAF servicemen would have visited during their leisure time - the Union Jack Club, the New World and Happy World cabaret and entertainment halls, all of which were popular venues for nightlife from the 1920's to 1960's, as well as images of the Tiger Beer headquarters. There are several group shots of the Yacht Club members which give a real feel for the attitudes and fashion of the time. These include a photograph with a trophy won in the Changi Regatta and one captioned "The Tuan Besars" (the great masters), as well as photos of the yachts in various parts of the Johore Straits, which was located adjacent to the Club, and members swimming and diving at the Club's swimming pool. The photographs of colonial life are contrasted with several photos of local people, including a Sikh policeman, Malay tradesmen, Indian cattle herders, trishaw pullers and fishermen. Two photos, captioned "Concrete Lizzies" show the so-called Samsui Women - women who left their homes in the Sanshui (meaning Three Waters) district of Canton Province to work as labourers on construction sites. As many as 2,000 are thought to have come and carried out this physically demanding work - a lifetime of hard labour just to send money home to their families. Most did not marry and lived in shared accommodation. Their trademark headdress was a red, or occasionally blue, square of starched material folded into a square hat - they chose red because it could be easily seen on the work site and therefore reduced the likelihood of accidents. Other photos show places such as the Causeway between Singapore and Johore, the Raffles Museum (now the National Museum of Singapore), Raffles Square, Change Alley (a flea market which has since been pulled down), the Fullerton Building which then housed the Post Office and is now a five star hotel, the Serangoon Road area with its then pineapple preserving factory - a common industry in those times, bumboats on the Singapore River (referred to as "junks" in the album), Chinese and Malay cemeteries, the Golden Sultan mosque, a Hindu and a Chinese temple, the Railway Station and a view from the sea of Collyer Quay where ferries would leave for the Indonesian islands. There are also scenes of life both in Singapore and in Johore, including rubber plantations, fishing from boats and near the shore, buffalos ploughing, an open-air street market, kampong (or village) scenes and a midwife's office. Other interesting scenes show vanishing trades such as the Chinese lantern maker, a coolie from Pungol (then a rural area in Singapore), a "malarial squad" armed with their cans of insecticide on their backs and an Indian dancing troupe. On the final pages of the album several photos of Balinese women have been included together with four black and white charcoal head and shoulder portraits by Konrad Fuller(?). The artist's signature is difficult to read but the place and date, Singapore, 1936 or 1937 is clear and printed on quality deckled edge card of local people. This album gives an insight not only into the life and society of RAF servicemen stationed in the Straits Settlements city of Singapore, but additionally gives a broader picture of the colonial society of "between the wars" Singapore. .

Stories from the Old Testament Retold.

The Hogarth Press, Richmond, 1920 - Octavo. Original blue paper wrappers, white label lettered in black on front cover. Spine cracked but holding, edges of wrappers a little yellowed, overall a good copy. First edition, first impression, presentation copy with the author's inscription to someone with the same surname, i.e. "G[----]. Smith from the author". Woolmer notes that this is apparently bound by the Woolfs, as the wrappers appear in a number of differing colours and designs; this copy matches Woolmer's description of it. The number of copies printed is not known, although 439 copies were sold by the end of August 1923, and it was out of print in 1925, suggesting that the print-run was a small one. Woolmer 11.         Correspondence Archive of Bertram D. Hulen, Author, and noted International correspondent of the New York Times

1920s-1950. Archive of Bertram D. Hulen, Author, and noted international correspondent of the New York Times.Bertram Hulen, Washington Bureau correspondent at the New York Times, was known as the dean of State Department reporters. He had more than twenty-five years’ experience covering the State Department and White House and was the author of a highly regarded book, “Inside The State Department.” Hulen was killed along with a dozen other American correspondents on July 12, 1949 in a plane crash near Bombay, India. The party was returning from an inspection of Indonesia at the invitation of the Netherlands government. This archive consists of letters and mementos dating from the 1920s up to the immediate aftermath of his death. Most of the journalistic items are letters from colleagues and friends, many congratulatory, commenting on the publication of his book. There are some interesting letters from correspondents, telling about their assignments. Person letters to his wife tell of his work, the life of a foreign correspondent, and some of the more interesting of his assignments, especially on the campaign trail with presidential candidates. There are many letters and telegrams of condolence written to his wife and to the New York Times, after his death. Also included are credentials of one type or another, issued for special assignments, invitations, and a file of correspondence and records related to Hulen’s family genealogy.Specifically, the contents include a telegram of condolence, to Mrs. Hulen, from Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, a 26” photo of President Coolidge and the White House Press Corp, taken in 1929, a film roll, sent by the Netherlands government, of the time the group of correspondents spent in Indonesia, a portrait of Hulen, a letter of condolence from poet Strickland Gillilan, a cocktail recipe sent to Hulen from the USSR Embassy in the aftermath of a reception there, a letter from Cordell Hull, another from Joseph Grew, both Secretaries of State, a detailed 1932 letter from Nelson T. Johnson of the China Legation of the United States, about conditions in China, specifically about the Japanese belligerence. There are telegrams of shock in the days immediately following Hulen’s death, many from noted New York Times reporters of the day, and dozens of letters from politicians, diplomats, journalists. One invitation is to the birthday celebration given for King Alexander I, from the Minister of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. A number of letters are from his colleagues at the New York Times, including Arthur Sulzberger. And much more, including an invitation to a meeting of “The Hitler Gang.”

UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART: HE BELIEVED IN SIGNS

      - (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "He Believed In Signs" and with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily (plus other characters). Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
