        The Complete Poems of the Bronte Sisters

      London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., c.1920-23., 1920. 3 vols., 8vo. Finely bound in recent full dark blue morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, gilt border to covers, top edge gilt. Held in a protective blue cloth slip case. A fine, attractive set. The 'Poems' represent the Brontes first published work. On her twenty-first birthday, Charlotte Bronte had asked Poet Laureate Robert Southey about her prospects as a writer. 'Literature cannot be the business of a woman's life' was his response. Granting this view of women, the sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne adopted pseudonyms to hide their sex, and published a joint collection 'Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell' (May 1846). Although the book failed to attract interest the sisters were undeterred, and began work on their first fiction- Charlotte continued to use the name 'Currer Bell' for her first two novels, 'Jane Eyre' (1847), and 'Shirley' (1849).

      Washington DC; Philadelphia, PA; Kansas City, MO, [ca. 1920-1931]. Near fine. 406 hand written letters between Morris Glazer and Dorothy (Cramer) Glazer. Nearly all in original mailing envelopes. 2 8vo. illustrated booklets: WASHINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE REVUE OF 1922; 27pp. String bound at left margin, illustrated card wraps, vignette illustrations and printed music throughout. DINNER OF THE WASHINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE APRIL FIRST 1922; Chromolithograph illustrated card wraps, 30pp. Bound with silk ribbon run through a ticker tape machine at left margin; 30pp. Many of the names and companies listed in Morris' writings appear in these programs, with copious lists of attendees (including Morris) and figures in politics and finance. Booklets about fine. Envelopes moderately worn, letters well preserved, generally near fine. An extensive archive of correspondence covering the Jazz Age, 1929 Stock Market Crash, and early Depression-era between Morris Glazer, financial editor of the Washington Post and Philadelphia Record, and his wife, Dorothy (Cramer) Glazer. The first approximately 180 letters, span the Spring of 1920 into the Fall of 1921. A recent graduate of the University of Missouri, Morris is working as a copy writer on the city desk of the Washington Post and quickly rises to editor of the financial section. His letters are almost exclusively written from either the copy desk or lounge of the National Press Club and capture the daily routine of a newspaper man and the Club atmosphere. Dorothy, residing in Kansas City, is skeptical of his ability to provide for a family on the salary of a newspaper man and as a result, Morris is constantly chasing side work, writing stories, and providing publicity for various trade publications. They are married in September of 1921, after he is made financial editor of the Post, and their letters cease with her relocation to Washington. The correspondence resumes, however, as she travels between March and June of 1923: 134 near daily letters back and forth. By this time, Morris is comfortable in his position as financial editor and appears to be taking full advantage of his access by pursuing aggressively retail trades in the stock market on the strength of insider information. Dorothy, never at ease with his investment strategies, is unimpressed: "You may call it "high finance." I call it "plain gambling." I shall change my opinion when you have much more experience" (April 22, 1923). After her return to Washington, the letters again cease, this time until July 1929 when Morris takes a position as financial editor of the Philadelphia Record, staying during the week at the YMCA and traveling back to Washington by train on weekends. He is still deeply invested in the markets; from his first dispatch from Philadelphia: "I made the rounds today of the some of banks and brokerage houses. Think I'm going to like this job very much. [...] The dope is - hold to N.A. - good for 200. UL is also going up - and Com. + South should go at least 4 or 5 pts higher. If I get any hot news tomorrow, I'll wire you" (July 02, 1929). He pens approximately 20 letters in October and November of 1929, detailing his market moves, the ensuing horror, and his continued efforts at chasing losses. He urges Dorothy to use their son's money to purchase stock in Zenith: "Altho the market went down, things are in much better shape. The heavy selling is over, and the market is acting more naturally. P+W. went up, as you noticed. Think you could buy about 50 shares of Zenith Radio for Harry's money" (November 18, 1929). Their written contact becomes more sporadic throughout 1930 and 1931, ending in October of 1931 when he is presumably let go by the paper. In his final letters he details bank collapses throughout Philadelphia, brokerage houses folding, and steep employment cuts at the Record: "This has been a trying week in Phila. About 12 banks failed, and the stock marked nose-dived. But things are looking a little better now, thanks to Mr. Hoover. As a result of this excitement I have been kept much busier than usual. Had two front page stories this week, one on the closing of a big bank, the other on Mr. Hoover's plan" (October 8, 1931). A rich archive, some 150k+ words in length (with majority from Morris), chronicling the professional and personal life of a financial newspaper man and retail investor during the most significant period in the history of American finance.         Original Frank Hurley Photographs of New Guinea

      1920 -1923.. Very good condition. Original publicity photographs by James Francis (Frank) Hurley (1885-1962) the Australian photographer, filmmaker and writer known for his Antarctic photographs, including the destruction of Ernest Shackleton's ship 'Endurance'.After that harrowing journey, Hurley vowed to visit the hottest place on earth, and he undertook two long expeditions to the Torres Strait and New Guinea between 1920 and 1923. From this, he developed a successful anthropological film, 'Pearls and Savages' and the book by the same title. He documented the people, their rites, houses, villages, artifacts, and mountain scenes. Although reviews in Australia were strong (one critic called it "probably the most beautifully photographed pictorial of the kind that has ever been screened"), the film release in America resulted in a financial loss for Hurley, retitled "The Lost Tribe".The book was printed in a New York edition in 1924. A typed sheet is attached to most photos, titled "Guinea Cannibals Look Like a Lost Tribe of Israel, Captain Frank Hurley, Explorer, Finds".Starting saying "A race of head hunters with Jewish features has been discovered by Capt. Frank Hurley, explorer, 280 miles up the Fly River... he said they might have been mistaken for a lost tribe of Israel."One of the images, not published in the book, titled "A view looking out of the entrance of the great kau ravi kaimabi" is reminiscent of Hurley's striking use of light and dark in his images of Australian troops in France and Flanders during WWI. The nine b&w 8 x 10" Hurley prints are also stamped International Newsreel, 226 William Street New York City on the verso. They include: The dubu daima of the Urama men and its initiated warriors; A view looking out of the entrance of the great kau ravi kaimabi (NOT illustrated in the book); A scene on the sand covered coral reef near the entrance to the Great Fly River, Papua; The Mountuan [sic] men wear the dazzling millinery creations made from parrots feathers surmounted with gorgeous plumes of the Baggian [sic] bird of paradise plumes; The main street of Mailu Village, south east Papua (2 copies); Hamoji; the Great Chief of the Sambio Headhunters is shown here wearing his regal plumes of the Raggiana bird of paradise. (Frontispiece of 'Pearls and Savages".) Photographs well handled, with some cracking and creasing at edges. Two photos have loss at corners. Otherwise bright, early impressions. A fascinating survival of Frank Hurley's publicity push for "Pearls and Savages" in the United States.

Vermutlich handelt es sich um die Ankündigung für: Alte Märchen mit der Feder erzählt. Berlin, Propyläen-Verlag 1920. (Vgl. Max Slevogt. Das druckgraphische Werk. 1914-1933. Düsseldorf, G. Söhn 2002, Nr. 329. Provenienz: Sammlung Max Osborn (1870 – 1946), Publizist in Berlin; Galerie Michael Hasenclever, München. Max Slevogt studierte ab 1885 an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in München. Er orientierte sich zunächst an den realistischen Malweisen von Wilhelm Leibl (1844-1900) und Wilhelm Trübner (1851-1917), die den Stil seines Frühwerks bestimmten. Durch einen Aufenthalt an der Académie Julian in Paris 1889 begann er sich dann mit dem Impressionismus auseinanderzusetzten. 1901 zog er - zusammen mit Lovis Corinth (1858-1925) - nach Berlin, wo er Mitglied der 'Berliner Secession' wurde. In dieser Zeit entwickelte er seinen eigenen, charakteristischen Malstil, der anfangs noch vom Jugendstil beeinflusst war. Neben seinen meisterhaften Porträts, Figuren- und Landschaftsbildern begann Slevogt 1906 in Berlin Bühnenbilder und Kostüme für Max Reinhardt und die Kammerspiele des Deutschen Theaters, die gerade neu gegründet worden waren, zu entwerfen. Auf einer Reise durch Ägypten 1914 entstanden 21 Gemälde und zahlreiche Aquarelle und Zeichnungen, die einen Höhepunkt in seinem künstlerischen Werk darstellen. Nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde er als 'Kriegsmaler' an die Westfront geschickt. 1917 erhielt er den Vorsitz einer Meisterklasse für Malerei an der Kunstakademie in Berlin. Große Bedeutung erlangte er auch als geistreicher und phantasievoller Illustrator sowie durch sein reichhaltiges und umfangreiches grafisches Werk. Gussler, company secretaries; images are tipped-on to heavy gray cardstock and all contained in an album; approx.. 8" x 11 ¼" size; oblong format, with string binding; gray striped cloth; some wear and soil to album covers; images very good, excellent sharp detail; Album # 2: With circa 800 small contact prints; about 2/3 of these have been trimmed to the image edge and mounted in strips on album pages, usually 3 strips to a page, about 6 images per row, 18 to a page; each two page 'set' of images with a an identifying statement and date, 1920 - 1930, in ink at top of page, with a number written below each, presumably to identify in an index; the other 1/3 of the image are loosely-laid-in, some still attached in their strip-forms, some untrimmed, some single images - these are tucked in a various later pages as if to have been mounted there at a later time; Images include several dozen of the Hoffmann-La Roche industrial complex, employees and visitors, a few images of bales & jars of raw materials being examined by suited individuals at the plant, groups on tour, perhaps some of the same as those portrayed in album # 1, about a dozen images of an industrial plant model, perhaps of Hoffmann's; another small group of a medical theater and examination and image of Hoffmann 'spasmalgin' product; locations include: Lausanne, Wyhlen, Zurich, Basel, Badenweiler, zoological gardens, Feldberg, Baden-Baden, others; mostly the album contains images of travel, Switzerland lake and alpine & woodland scenes, camping, roads & canal-ways, architecture including exterior and some exterior views of stately homes, notable structures; a few automobiles, candid portraits of children, touring groups and family members, nature including plants, trees, flowers and animals including zoo creatures, favorite dogs, also hunting images - birds, deer, antler trophies and kills and rifle range practice; a large variety of images, nearly all very well-taken, sharp and well-composed, evidently any that were less than perfect did not make it into the album; also evident are signs of wealth and ease of life, well -dressed and relaxed people (not identified) enjoying themselves; these images are all contained in an album, approx. 8" x 11", patterned-paper covered boards, vellum spine, gold cloth ribbon-binding, with the small stationer's stamp of Cartoleria V. One book contains variations of the same label-a geometric border and decorative floral motifs-printed in a variety of colors on papers that vary in color, pattern, texture, finish, and weight. The companion book contains forty unique designs for a range of brands and products, including Whitman's, Douglass', and Moirs. Most designs are included in multiples, printed in a variety of colors on diverse papers to total one hundred thirty-four printed labels. A brightly colored glimpse into the broad ranging scope of a printer's products and clients. In matching brown textured cloth with two screws securing the punch binding of each. A label pasted down to the cover of one book. There is some bumping and edgewear to the covers and slight tears and chipping to labels, but otherwise very good for both. Several label versos inscribed in pencil, the final of the second book is stamped with date and location.

Cloth, G+. xxvi+461pp, b/w frontis, 14pp b/w plates including one gatefold, index, SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY this being copy 47 of 50 'of a special edition of fifty copies made for personal presentation' the recipients being Catherine & Harry Nomabell. The inscription is dated September 1924. Cloth bumped & rubbed and with a double cup ring to the upper panel, paper spine label a little yellowed, but otherwise a nice copy. The autobiography of Edward Bok [ 1863 - 1930 ] who emigrated from Holland to the USA & became the famed editor of the Ladies' Home Journal for thirty years. Under his editorial control the magazine became the first in the world to have a circulation in excess of a million, and the plans for middle class houses within its pages were a driving force in American domestic architecture. This book won the 1920 Pulitzer prize for autobiography. The fifty copies Bok reserved for personal presentation clearly were not all given out at the time of publication. Major Harry Nomabell was a pall bearer at Bok's funeral & a beneficiary in his will. His daughter, Ursula, was Bok's Goddaughter.

Eric Gill's copy of this treatise on the craft of engraving on wood, which contains an introduction and five engravings by him. The Introduction of this copy has been annotated by Gill, with corrections to his text on four pages. Gill has further signed and dated the front free endpaper, and the front paste-down bears his bookplate. Includes an additional twenty-eight figures and decorations. Fine in the original quarter linen and tan paper-covered boards, printed with the title information in black. Together with a variant of the first edition, which contains the title-page and main body of text from the first edition, along with the Introduction from the second edition of 1925, including the revisions noted in Eric Gill's copy. Bound in quarter linen and brown paper-covered boards, with the blue dust wrapper, printed with Gill's "Axe and Block" engraving. Wrapper shows wear at edges, with two closed tears to top edge, else fine. Bookplate of John Roland Abbey to front paste-down. Together, these two copies provide an interesting look into Gill's revision process.

This album contains 55 vernacular photographs, some with captions, plus 3 large, silver gelatin photographs of Victoria Lake and the Falls by Percy R. Clark, and 1 Roberts photograph of the South Africa Union Buildings. All are neatly mounted with transparent corners onto 19 cardstock leaves. The photographs vary in size from 2.5"x4.25" to 8"x6". Housed in a string-tied album of snake-skin-patterned cloth boards, 9"x12.5". Inside the cover is the ownership inscription, "Fraser-Mackenzie, 1922." Featuring unique views of colonial Zimbabwe and the Shona people, this album records the farming practices and achievements of Dick and Jack Fraser-Mackenzie, Scottish cousins who emigrated to Mashonaland in 1920 and became pioneer farmers throughout Southern Rhodesia. The hard labor of African workers is well-illustrated by these images, as are the good relations with local Chiefs. Plowing and cultivating were done by hand; water for cattle was carried by Africans on their heads; acres of corn were harvested without machines; &c. Captioned images include: Dick in a field; Picnic party near Chiwe; Car stuck on way to Allangrange; Bob & Dick at a picnic; Car stuck on way to Lone Cow; Dick's water cart; Dick's mealies loading up; Chief bringing Bob a goat; Dick's ploughman; Chief at Lone Cow; Mealie crusher at Dick's; Water carrier at Dick's; &c. The many photographs of Africans at work are mostly uncaptioned.

At rear, six pp. of advertising touting "The 'Greys,' the big cigarette with the choice flavor"; these adverts feature black and white illustrations (one depicts the R-34 airship) several of which are by Christopher Clark. Front and rear covers abraded along top edge. Toning and very light buckling to endpapers. Printed dedication on paste-down title on front cover reads: "For Colonel W.E.R. Kelly. With the Compliments of Major Drapkin & Co." The Introduction to the volume identifies its intent: to trace the history of the "Scots Greys" in word and picture. "The Second Royal North British Dragoons (the 'Scots Greys') have a record of nearly two hundred and fifty years' distinguished service... Every regiment has its romance--the romance of its history, traditions, corporate spirit. These memories of the glorious past help to form its fighting spirit, and are rightly treasured by those whose work it is to make the living regiment worthy of its honorable parentage." The narrative traces the Dragoons from 1678 through the First World War. Major Drapkin & Company were the manufacturers of Greys cigarettes. "Romance of the Greys" is an uncommon publication, listed as being held by only one WorldCat library. The volume, in good condition, is beautifully illustrated; contents bright and clean. .

Light toning, mild foxing to the uncut fore-edges, else a very good set indeed in similar jackets, some minor crumpling and splitting at heads and tails of the spines, and chipping at the folds, now with archival tissue reinforcement, but a truly superior set, and handsome thus. First Edition. " … fascinating and brilliantly-written … invaluable" (Falls), to which Lengel adds, "detailed, readable, and indispensable". Account of the Dardanelles Campaign by its much disparaged commander. The best set we have handled.

Tipped in between the second endpaper and the half title page is a page from another printing of this title, flat SIGNED by Sinclair Lewis. There is an erasure at the top of the page (visible in a glancing light or from the verso). The volume is rubbed on the edges, folds, and joints with boards exposed on the bottom corners and cloth frayed at the spine ends. The orange is somewhat subdued, more so on the spine than the front panel; the pages have light toning, occasional soiling, and some scattered foxing. Comes with a fine, FACSIMILE, first issue dust jacket.

Geburt ihrer zwei Kinder 1906 und 1909. 1912 Reise an die Riviera. 1916 erschien ihre erste Graphikfolge. 1915 Reise über Paris nach Spanien. 1915 Herausgabe der aus Aufzeichnungen Corinths zusammengestellten „Selbstbiographie", Beginn der Arbeit an einem Verzeichnis der Werke ihres Mannes, das sie 1958 fertigstellte. 1927 Eröffnung einer eigenen Malschule. Reisen nach Italien, in die Türkei, den Libanon, nach Ägypten, Tunesien und Dänemark.1930 erste große Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin. Seit 1932 wohnhaft in Italien, seit 1937 Schweiz, 1939 Emigration in die USA, zuerst New York, seit 1940 Santa Barbara/Kalifornien, 1943 auch hier Eröffnung einer Malschule, die sie nach ihrem Umzug nach New York bis 1955 weiterführte. Die in Berlin geborene Tänzerin, Kabarettistin und Schauspielerin Valeska Gert (1892-1978) war in Berlin und München tätig. 1933 emigrierte sie über Frankreich nach England, 1938 in die USA. 1947 über Paris und Zürich Rückkehr nach Berlin. 1951 zugleich wohnhaft auf Sylt.
