        Die Landpartie. Aus meiner Jungszeit

[Berlin: H Birkholz Druck-Werkst?tte, 1920. First edition, no. 92 of 100 numbered copies, signed in ink by the artist: "Dieses Exemplar hat die Nummer 92 und is von mir koloriert, H. Zille". 8 lithographic plates (containing 11 images and handwritten text), printed rectos only, colored by the artist. Manuscript statement of limitation on verso of title leaf. 1 vols. Folio. Drab wrappers, stitched. Some toning of paper stock, small marginal flaws, otherwise clean and fresh. Near fine. First Printing, Colored & Signed by the Artist Heinrich Zille (1858-1929), known as the Raffael der Hinterh?fe (the Rafael of the back tenements), was an enormously popular German artist whose work chronicling Berlin life was most commonly reproduced for mass distribution in periodicals. He was a member of the Berlin Secession and a friend of Max Liebermann, Kathe Kollwitz, and Hans Baluschek. Zille also produced a few series of erotic drawings for limited, private circulation, including Zwanglose Geschichten und Bilder (Gurlitt, 1919), Die Landpartie (1920) and Hurengespräche (privately printed in 1921 under the pseudonym W. Pfeifer, with a false date of 1913). Zille was prosecuted for obscenity for his 1925 lithograph Modellpause in the periodical Simplicissimus, (depicting 8 models in various stages of undress).Die Landpartie, "a little humoresque", produced by ZIlle himself, demonstrates his eye for ordinary life and his erotic flair. Rosenbach identifies two issues in the first edition of 100 copies, issue A on white Werkdruckpapier, with lithographic limitation statement on the verso of the first leaf and a ruled square for numbering; and issue B (as here), on yellowish laid paper stock (auf gelblichem, geripptem Bütten), with a different formulation of the limitation statement, entirely in the artist's hand, concluding with these words: "Dieses Exemplar hat die Nummer 92 und is von mir koloriert, H. Zille". Rosenbach states that copies of issue A numbered higher than 58 are not known (with one exception, a copy of issue B numbered 20); other known copies of issue B are numbered 78 to 99. The present copy was sold at auction in 1954 and is noted by Rosenbach; since then it has been in an American private collection.Rare and unusual.

"The first half of this attractively produced book is a brief narrative account of the Division's services in Mesopotamia from the time it disembarked through to the end of the war. There are listings of all its constituent elements, and this information alone makes the publication a useful source of reference. The second half is a roll of all the British officers who served with every British and Indian Army unit which came under the Division's command during that period" (Perkins). Perkins notes that there were two issues, one as the present copy with the loose plates in a pocket, the other with only the frontispiece, it is not clear in all cases of the institutional holdings which issue is being referred to.

The Works of Charles Dickens (National Library Edition) 20 vols

Bigelow, Brown & Co., Inc, New York 1920 - A sharp, nearly Fine set of Dickens' complete works in 20 volumes. Each volume bound in red three quarter leather over cloth. Spines with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, top-edge of page block gilt. All volumes clean and sound with light wear to the corners, but likely never read.Charles Dickens is considered one of the greatest novelists of the English language (critic Harold Bloom considers him one of the greatest writers in the history of the Western World). He was easily the most widely read and popular writer of his own era and remains so today - for Dickens has never been out of print and his works have been adapted into over 200 films or television series as well as countless stage dramas. He is an iconic figure in England as well, appearing on the 10 pound note and being voted one of the "100 Greatest Britons" of all time in a 2002 BBC poll.Dickens read widely in his youth, including many picaresque works that would influence his later writing. However, his father's financial difficulties soon landed the family in debtors prison, and Dickens was forced to work long days as a child in a boot blacking factory in order to cover the family's finances. It's thought that this experience is what drove Dickens to become an advocate for social reform, a subject he often tackles in his novels. Dickens soon became a journalist and the success of his first book - Sketches By Boz, would set him on his writing career that would include such masterpieces as A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield.Dickens style is noted for its incredible skill with caricature and satire - indeed, one usually need only mutter the name of a character of his to conjure up a vision of that character's entire self. A master storyteller, his work often depicted the less savory and neglected side of England as well. The number of writers who respect or has been influenced by him is countless, and include such luminaries as Tolstoy, Orwell, and Conrad. Near Fine.

One of a tiny handful of titles published as part of the "Covent Garden Library" a short-lived marketing ploy by Duckworth. Original blue cloth, titles and decoration to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A stunning copy in the little tanned dust jacket with a short tear at one fold. First edition, As such, however, this issue, which eluded Kirkpatrick at least in detail, should by rights have a distinct bibliographical number under the entry for Night and Day. The number produced in this format must have been very low indeed and copies in this condition and in dust jacket are of the utmost scarcity. Rare.

1920. [SKETCHTOUR GENRE] Fukuda Shu^taro [Bisen], artist. SHINA SANJU^-GAKAN. Tokyo, Kanao Bun'endo^, Taisho^ 9 [1920]. 2 volumes, oblong folio, 23.2 x 31.2 cm. A few years after Bun'endo^ had published the justly famous SHINA TAIKAN by the same artist, the publisher, Kanao Takejiro, assembled the same group of artisans (incuding the master printer, Nishimura Kumakichi) to craft another "take" on the scenery of China - a series of 30 "scrolls" in color woodcut embedded in a narrative shot through with a multitude of illustrations in other media. Scott Johnson in his seminal article on the sketchtour genre in ANDON 37, has called SHINA TAIKAN "the most ambitious of all the sketch-tour books." The SHINA SANJU^-GAKAN is certainly no less of an impressive achievment (and a much scarcer book). Enormously expensive to produce (It was priced at 50 Yen, impressive even by the inflationary standards of the time!) few were sold and this set is hardly ever found. Our copy has the original wraparound chitsu case with clasps intact. The chitsu itself is a work of art, depicting junks on a river. With a bit of internal foxing and a hint of hinge weakening, but overall a very nice set, complete, of an important and scarce work in the sketchtour genre:

Erste Ausgabe.
