The Story of Opal The Journal of an Understanding Heart

Atlantic Monthly Press, Boston, MA 1920 - B&W Illustrations; Limited to 650 copies - this is book number 521. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket for this edition. The book and its contents are in mostly clean, bright condition. The covers have dark green paper covered boards and a paper vellum spine with a paper spine label. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is some beginning foxing to the endpapers. The limited edition of this book is quite scarce. The history of this book, and of the author herself is a strange one - the author was a noted amateur naturalist from a very young age and considered a child prodigy by many. This book however, is a compilation of her journals, purportedly written as a child in diaries written in phonetic spelling, which were later ripped up and reassembled. Opal believed (or conned people into believing, depending on who you believe) that she was the daughter of Henri, Prince of Orléans. This book deals both with her rather harsh upbringing and the love and interest Opal had for nature of all sorts. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 16 plates from photographs, 3 maps. Minor burn mark at head of a dozen or so leaves. A handsome copy. First edition. A lavishly inscribed copy: signed by the author below the frontispiece portrait, and at the head of the half-title where he has written a lengthy note recommending Ernest Raymond's book The Old Tree Blossomed (1928) "if you want exact details of events very well & clearly written" and commenting on the fact that his own book has clearance from both the War Office and India Office ("otherwise, readers might think I was romancing here & there - it is all so like Alice in Wonderland"; there are further notes at the head of the Preface, and at the head of Chapter 3. Also tipped-in is a coloured pen and ink drawing by Mary Spire (?) of Dunsterville and his adversary Kuchik Khan (1880-1921), the Iranian revolutionary considered a national hero in modern day Iran; Dunsterville has inscribed this: "Supposed to be a picture of myself and Kuchik Khan in Persia 1918."         PENALTY, THE (1920)

USA 1920 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 35 cm.) lobby card, USA. Lon Chaney, Doris Pawn, Jim Mason, Milton Ross, Ethel Grey Terry, Kenneth Harlan, Claire Adams, dir: Wallace Worsley; Goldwyn. A fascinating early Lon Chaney crime horror thriller! He plays Blizzard, who as a child had his legs unnecessarily amputated after an accident. He grows up to be vicious criminal and mob leader of San Francisco's underworld, seeking revenge on the surgeon who left him deformed. Chaney went through agony for this role, having his legs tied back so as he "walked" on his knee caps, and was only able to perform like this for 10 minutes at a time. A wonderfully atmospheric production made this a winning thriller. Chaney is present in this card with Doris Pawn. There is a playdate written in blue pencil at bottom, otherwise very nice condition, NEAR FINE.

The inscription is dated September 1924. Cloth bumped & rubbed and with a double cup ring to the upper panel, paper spine label a little yellowed, but otherwise a nice copy.. The autobiography of Edward Bok [ 1863 - 1930 ] who emigrated from Holland to the USA & became the famed editor of the Ladies' Home Journal for thirty years. Under his editorial control the magazine became the first in the world to have a circulation in excess of a million, and the plans for middle class houses within its pages were a driving force in American domestic architecture. This book won the 1920 Pulitzer prize for autobiography. The fifty copies Bok reserved for personal presentation clearly were not all given out at the time of publication. Major Harry Nomabell was a pall bearer at Bok's funeral & a beneficiary in his will. His daughter, Ursula, was Bok's Goddaughter.

        [Photograph]: African-American Blues Guitar Player

[Circa 1920]. Cabinet photograph. Sepia-toned image of an African-American man playing a guitar outside on a porch. Image size 3.5" x 5" mounted on 4.25" x 6.5" card. Small stain in lower right corner, a bit of smudging in the image, overall very good. A striking image of an insouciant-looking young guitar player perched on the edge of a rural porch, with a string for a guitar strap, playing a C7 chord with a capo on the third fret. It's a little presumptuous of us to assume he is a bluesman from a single chord, but we'll do it anyway. .
