Methuen & Co. Ltd. [1920], London - Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-303 [304: printer's imprint]. + 8-page undated publisher's catalogue inserted at rear, original red cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, front cover stamped in blind. 1250 copies printed of which this is one of 500 to 600 in the first issue binding. Lindsay's masterpiece. "A classic allegorical romance in which the landscapes and inhabitants of the planet Tormance provide an externalization of the moral and metaphysical questions that preoccupied the author. Its incarnate theological system influenced Lewis's OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET (1938), and it also bears some similarity to George Macdonald's LILITH (1895), although it is very much a work sui generis." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 2-72. "VOYAGE . has become one of the most widely discussed and debated fantasies of the twentieth century, and it is well on its way to becoming one of the most influential." - Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature IV, pp. 2039-45.         Trip to Rainbow Arch, A

      W. D. Sayle. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1920. First Edition; First Printing. Flexible cloth. Trip to the Rainbow Arch. W. D. Sayle, 1920. 62 pages. Very good first edition in leather covers. Inscribed by author: 'A little story of a fine trip which I hope you will enjoy W. D. Sayle1920'. The leather cover is lightly worn around the edges. The leather on the spine shows a moderate amount but the binding is tight and this is one of the cleanest copies of this scarce Colorado Plateau title we've seen. More often than not, the flexible boards are curled and very chipped. The text and pictures are in very good shape. Follows the author's journey from Adamana, NM, throught the southwest to Rainbow Arch (now Bridge). A fun journal of the exploration of a remote area of the American southwest, where few whites had been before. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 62 pp; Signed by Author .

RUSSIA IN THE SHADOWS (Superb Copy of the First Edition in Original Dust Jacket)

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1920. H. G. Wells. RUSSIA IN THE SHADOWS. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1920]. First Edition. Fine bright copy in a Near Fine Original Dust Jacket (lightly soiled, almost inevitable with this cream-colored DJ) and rarely found in this exceedingly nice condition. An important book, written after the author's visit to Russia to meet his author-friend Maxim Gorky (who arranged for Wells to meet with Lenin himself). Wells was a Fabian socialist and thus had moderate sympathy with the cause of the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, although he did not buy Marxist faux-science, nor Leninist dogma. This book explores Wells' pessimism re: the future of Russia and helped his readers understand the chaos and devolution engulfing the Russian people at the time. Worn vintage slipcase. Hammond E19. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells, with McMurtry's bookplate.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine.

Wien, 11. V. 1920. - ½ S. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.

First edition, review copy. Signed autograph of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz to Robert Garric. Catholic reformist, he was the   founder of "social Teams" in 1920, which aimed to establish a social elite and bring the good word about the brotherhood born of the trenches to the workers, in the tradition of patronage. Simone de Beauvoir, then student of Robert Garric in philosophy at Sainte-Marie Institute of Neuilly, remembers him   in his "Memoirs of a Tidy Wench"   "Garric appeared; I forgot everything else and myself; the authority of his voice subdued me. In twenty years we he explained, he had discovered in the trenches the joys of camaraderie that removed social barriers. [...] To deny all limits and all separations, get out of my class, out of my skin: this slogan electrified me. [...] Must serve my life! Must serve all my life! " Back passed, small light spots on the boards, reading a few marks in pencil by the dedicatee in margins of some leaves. Grasset Paris 1935 12x19cm broché

        La Batrachomyomachie

Paris: Marcel Seheur,, 1920. Poème attribué a Homère. Translaté du grec en français par Mario Meunier orné de bois gravés par … Quarto (274 × 180 mm). Contemporary green quarter calf, marbled boards and endpapers, original wraps bound in, the upper with a hand-coloured wood-cut vignette. Hand-coloured woodcut frontispiece and 10 similar plates, historiated initials, head- and tail-pieces throughout, vignette to the title page, complete suite of illustrations printed in black at the rear. Spine sunned, a little rubbed at the extremities, front hinge a little cracked at the head after the free endpaper, pale toning, else very good. Edition of 525 copies, this the tête de tirage, copy A of 25 lettered copies coloured on Japon, with an additional suite of all illustrations in black; the artist's copy warmly inscribed to him by the translator and publisher; with the original artwork for one of the plates loosely inserted. Extremely uncommon, OCLC locates copies at BnF, BIU-Lsh Lyon, BCU Dorigny, Lausanne, and Princeton only, these all appear to be copies of the 100 "sur papier Hollande, teinté crème", that at Princeton being copy number 3. Boucher, Meunier and Seheur met in Merseburg prisoner of war camp in Saxony during First World War, and for a brief period in the 20s they produced a handful of very cleverly conceived and handsomely made illustrated books together. Seheur was wiped out by the 1934 French Crisis, Meunier became France's foremost Hellenist of the twentieth century, Boucher continued as a jobbing commercial artist, probably best-remembered for his inventive work for Air France. A superb copy of a wonderfully witty and wise reading of this ancient satire on military vainglory.

JARDINS. Carnet de plans et de dessins.

First edition, presentation copy to Gordon Knox, signed by Forestier. "(Forestier's) friends noted his talents and asked him to design their grounds, and as a preparatory study for this he planned seventeen imaginary gardens, which later formed the central portion of his book "Jardins"." (Fox, Helen Morgenthau. in "Jean C.N. Forestier", LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, 1930, pp. 93). Forestier was Conservateur of the Paris parks, city planner, designer of modern gardens, such as the rose and iris gardens at Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne, and authority on the design of Spanish and Arabic gardens. In JARDINS, Forestier went beyond the imaginary gardens proposed for friends to cover details of his approach to terraces, lawns, stairs, fountains, bassins, benches and tilework. A long list of his recommendations for best roses is included. Additionally, he offers illustration and commentary on gardens that made his fame: that of Joseph Guy at Beziers; of Montjuich at the Barcelona exposition; and of La Casa Del Rey Moro in Andalousia."In his designs, plants partially erase, rather than reinforce, the rigor of the plan. This play between the grace of the vine and the strict line of the post situated Forestier precisely at the juncture of the jardin à la française and the cubist/modernist garden." (Imbert, THE MODERNIST GARDEN IN FRANCE, p. 25) A signed presentation copySmall folio (32.5 x 25.2 cm); 240 unnumbered pp., profusely illustrated from drawings and plans, full page and in text. Original paper wraps with title printed on upper cover, illustration or design on upper and lower covers; covers darkened and soiled; final few pages lightly soiled at margins.

Einband berieben, Kanten stärker beschabt. Papierbedingt schwach gedunkelt. Vereinzelt leicht fingerfleckiges, sonst gutes Exemplar dieses raren Werks.

        Jailed for Freedom

New York: Boni & Liveright. (1920). First. First edition. Frontispiece portrait of Alice Paul, who is also the dedicatee. Publisher's blue cloth gilt. Later ownership signature of feminist sociologist Barbette Blackington on the title page, some sunning at the spine, else near fine in near very good dustwrapper with several tears and modest chips at the spine folds, and another owner's name ("Charles L. Luedtke") written on the front flap, but still nice and presentable. Gift inscription: "To Charles L. Luedtke, a skeptical feminist, from Lucille Palmer, an ardent one. Washington, D.C., August 10, 1923." Luedtke was an economist who worked for the government, Lucille Palmer was likely a librarian, and the daughter of Elsie Miller Palmer whose papers are at the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe. Blackington headed the International Institute of Women's Studies in Washington. A well-known and heavily illustrated history of the women's suffrage movement in America and their attempt to win enfranchisement for women. Rare in jacket, and with a curious series of associations. .
