Autograph Letter Signed ("A. Einstein"), in German.

[Berlin], June 30, 1920 - 4to. 1 page. Einstein on the value of relativity for philosophy. Einstein writes to Hans Reichenbach, the philosopher of science and an influential expositor of Relativity. In part (translation): "I am really very pleased that you want to dedicate your excellent brochure to me, but even more so that you give me such high marks as a lecturer and thinker. The value of the th.[eory] of rel.[ativity] for philosophy seems to me to be that it exposed the dubiousness of certain concepts that even in philosophy were recognized as small change. Concepts are simply empty when they stop being firmly linked to experiences. They resemble upstarts who are ashamed of their origins and want to disown them." The letter was published in the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, vol 10, doc 66, pp 323-324 (CPAE Translation, vol 10, doc 66, p 201). Slightly uneven toning, a few spots in upper margin, two-hole punch at left margin, folding creases. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Memories of a Life spent between the Bread and the Fishes and the Days when all Cares were forgotten

[Reading: privately printed, 1920. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Original green textured cloth, titled stamped in gilt on upper board, speckled edges. Bookplate of O.M. Reed ("Omar") with his ownership signature dated August 1934 and annotations. Reed's draft of an essay and correspondence with A.E. Hobbs loosely inserted. Old cellotape mark along front pastedown where letter was tipped in. Fine. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Fisherman's Memoir: Pike and Thames Trout. Nostalgic privately produced memoir of angling in the Thames Valley a century ago. Chapman was a Reading tobacconist and a keen fisher, and he recounts his experiences fishing on private lakes, ponds, and local rivers, including the Kennet and Thames, as well as misadventures in boats, dense fogs, notable catches of Pike and Thames trout, and an incident of river pollution. The other copy we have seen varies slightly in the pagination and the page format. Reed and his correspondent, A.E. Hobbs, discuss the book's author and identify most of the places alluded to in Chapman's narrative, which includes a portrait of the author holding a 20-pound fish taken from the Thames. An uncommon work, produced in just a few copies, with an illuminating correspondence concerning this curious and interesting book. Not in Hampton's Angling Bibliography 1881-1949. Not in BL or OCLC

MAKS, VOET, CLICHÉFABRIEK Ons Boek, fraai gebonden boekwerk met geschreven teksten betreffende het gezin Henk Maks en Stijntje Voet (gehuwd Haarlem 28 april 1898) en hun dochter Christine Sandeune Maks (geb. Haarlem 7 november 1900). Ca. 200 p. (1898-1960), geschept papier in perkamenten band met gouden letters. Fraai!.

Later woonden zij in Den Haag.

The topic of this book is archaeological and historical research on religious paintings from the first eight centuries after Christ's birth and found in Buddhist caves in the vicinity of Kucha. Albert Grünwedel [1856-1935] was a German indologist, tibetologist, archaeologist, and explorer of Central Asia. With thanks to the Brill Humanities lectures on Dunhuang for the following: The so-called Turfan expeditions made by the Germans in the first quarter of the 20th century were not in fact limited to Turfan but also encompassed Kucha, Kharashahr and Maral-Bashi. During the Han-Tang period Kucha was a large Silk Road kingdom but culturally part of the region where the Tocharian languages were in use. In this region, in addition to Buddhist monastery sites also seen in Khotan, a large number of Buddhist cave temples were preserved. The multitude of Buddhist wall paintings that survived in these caves are an important source for the study of Buddhist art on the Northern Route. The Tocharian B dialect used in Kucha survived in both Buddhist scriptures and secular documents, which remain a major source for the study of the Kucha kingdom around the 7th century, Limited Edition

The topic of this book is archaeological and historical research on religious paintings from the first eight centuries after Christ's birth and found in Buddhist caves of in the vicinity of Kucha. In addition, in this region in addition to Buddhist monastery sites also seen in Khotan, a large number of Buddhist cave temples were preserved. The multitude of Buddhist wall paintings that survived in these caves are an important source for the study of Buddhist art on the Northern Route. The Tocharian B dialect used in Kucha survived in both Buddhist scriptures and secular documents, which remain a major source for the study of the Kucha kingdom around the 7th century.         Poems : With an Introduction by Siegfried Sassoon

Chatto & Windus, 1920. 1st edition. Hardcover. The original red cloth is in good condition, slightly puckered in a few places, and slightly paled at the spine and across the top inch of the rear board, but the printed paper label on the spine is completely intact. The pages are very clean indeed, a little light browning to the rep, fractional spotting on pp ii and iii, very small ink initial from 1921 on the fep, a bookplate on the fpd of Anthony Hobson, one of the most distinguished book-collectors and bibliophiles of the 20th century. Unusually, the tissue guard over the frontispiece photograph of the author (the last such photograph taken of him, in Hastings in 1918) has not browned the title page. Posthumously published, this fragile book is generally considered to be the most important collection of poems from the First World War, even more than those of Siegfried Sassoon, who championed Owen's work and contributed the famous introduction to this volume.

Plastic Surgery of the Face, based on selected Cases of War Injuries of the Face including Burns. With original Illustrations. With Chapter on the Prosthetic Problems of Plastic Surgery by Capt. W. Kelsey Fry and Remarks on Anæsthesia by Capt. R. Wade.

London, Henry Frowde & Hodder and Stoughton, 1920. Small folio. Original full browish red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and black lettering to front board. Hinges weak and worn. Capitals worn. Corners a bit bumped. Internally nice and clean. Richly illustrated throughout. (2), XII, (2), 408 pp.. Rare first edition of this milestone of modern medicine, Gillies' groundbreaking work, which founded plastic surgery. "Rhinoplasty, skin grafts, and facial reconstructions have been practised for centuries. However, it was New Zealander Harold Delf Gillies who standardised these techniques and established the discipline of 'plastic surgery'. In 1920, his text book "Plastic Surgery of the Face" was published, setting down the principles of modern plastic surgery; principles which were adopted by surgeons from every part of the world. The British Medical Journal described it as "one of the most notable contributions made to surgical literature in our day". The "New York Medical Journal" said that "his are the greatest of all contributions to the advance of this interesting reparative work." (C.J. Williams: Harold Gillies. Aesthetic Reconstructor). The First World War posed a novel challenge to the surgeons of Europe. The introduction of more destructive weapons resulted in devastating injuries, many of them facial, as in trench warfare the head was more exposed than the rest of the body, meaning that soldiers' faces were often shattered or burnt beyond recognition. Despite the best efforts of surgeons, many soldiers were left hideously disfigured and it was clear that a new type of surgery was needed. Realizing this urgent need, Harold Gillies, a young surgeon from New Zealand operating out of Aldershot hospital in England, began performing operations which involved rebuilding the face by taking tissue from other parts of the body. Due to his endeavours, Harold Delf Gillies is now known as the father of plastic surgery. This pioneering work describes for the first time Gillies' major inventions that came to establish modern plastic surgery and which became standard practice in the field. The most notable of these inventions was the pedical tube (a tube of living tissue which would increase the blood supply to grafts, close them to infection, and be far less liable to contract or degenerate as the older methods were). This innovation proved extremely successful. The pedicle tube simplified grafting and made it more certain that a shattered face would be recognizable again. As Gillies later stated, this was "a major breakthrough, which I had good reason to be proud of."Another major invention described here for the first time is the "epithelial outlay technique", which enabled surgeons to restore function and appearance to reverted eyelids. "A considerable amount of doubting interest was aroused," Gillies wrote, "but when in two weeks the stitches were removed... there was shining before us the most perfect lid we had so far accomplished".Gillies was also the first surgeon to make pictorial records of pre- and post-facial reconstruction of faces, as will be witnessed in the present work, but his perhaps greatest innovation was the pioneering of what it now known as "cosmetic surgery"."Rebuilding the face by taking tissue from other parts of the body was not a new idea. For centuries, Indian surgeons had been practicing a form of rhinoplasty, where crescent shaped flaps of skin were drawn from patients' foreheads and fashioned into substitute noses. During the 19th century, the French and Germans had developed a technique whereby skin could be transferred from one part of the body to another.Indeed, by the time Gillies arrived on the scene, they had made considerable progress in plastic work "but appearance was of secondary importance": "No one, it seemed, had given serious consideration to the aesthetic side, not even the French, who might be thought sensitive to it."For Gillies, plastic surgery not only involved restoring function but also making the person look normal and sometimes more beautiful than before. He was driven by the idea that the surgeon should be creative, imaginative - in fact an artist. He described his work at Aldershot as "a strange new art", and indeed it was, for prior to Gillies there was little concern for how the patient looked. Gillies never wavered in his belief. Many years later, at the first International Congress of Plastic Surgery in Stockholm (1955), he declared; "within us all there is an overwhelming urge to change something ugly and useless into some other thing more beautiful and more functional"." (Williams). "[D]uring my life I have only known three surgeons who were undoubtedly first-class. They were Geoffery Jeferson, Harold Gillies and Russell Brock. Apart from Arbuthnot Lane, who was before my time, they are the only men in Europe or America who have taken a branch of surgery and by their own effort, by their leadership, their research and craftsmanship, have left it far higher than they found it. To say that of Gillies is an understatement: he invented plastic surgery. There was no plastic surgery before he came. Everything since then, no matter whose name be attached to it, was started by Gillies, perfected by him and handed on by him to lesser men, who have often claimed it as their own." (Sir Heneage Ogilvie, 1962).G&M: 5758
