Bound in recent dark green full Morocco with raised bands and gilt titles and tooling to spine, gilt ruled margin to front and back. Top edge gilt fore-edge uncut, green marbled endpapers. Some spotting to the prelims, otherwise a nice clean copy in an attractive modern binding. The Jazz-age author's second novel; Amory Blaine, intent on rebelling against his staid, Midwestern upbringing, longs to acquire the patina of Eastern sophistication. In his quest for sexual and intellectual enlightenment, he progresses through a series of relationships, until he is cast out into the real world. Bruccoli.         Photograph]: African-American Blues Guitar Player

1920 - Cabinet photograph. Sepia-toned image of an African-American man playing a guitar outside on a porch. Image size 3.5" x 5" mounted on 4.25" x 6.5" card. Small stain in lower right corner, a bit of smudging in the image, overall very good. A striking image of an insouciant-looking young guitar player perched on the edge of a rural porch, with a string for a guitar strap, playing a C7 chord with a capo on the third fret. It's a little presumptuous of us to assume he is a bluesman from a single chord, but we'll do it anyway.

        This Side of Paradise

1920. Signed. FITZGERALD, F. Scott. This Side of Paradise.New York: Charles Scribner?'s Sons, 1920.First edition, first printing of Fitzgerald?'s first novel, inscribed one day after publication, ?"For Pete Compton, A wild man if there ever was one — F. Scott Fitzgerald, Princeton, NJ, March 27th 1920.?"Although the inscription was written just one day after the publication of This Side of Paradise, Fitzgerald was already fast on his way to becoming the new literary sensation: the entire first printing of 3000 copies had already sold out (ultimately requiring two more printings in April alone). On March 30, 1920, Fitzgerald sent Zelda a telegram proposing that they should marry now: ?"Talked with John Palmer and Rosalind and we think best to get married Saturday noon we will be awfully nervous until it is over and would get no rest by waiting until Monday first edition of the book is sold out address Cottage until Thursday and Scribner?'s after that Love Scott.?" On April 3rd they were married at St. Patrick?'s Cathedral in New York. The parties in Princeton apparently continued: ?"In April they went to Princeton to ?'chaperon?' houseparties. ?'We were there three days,?' Fitzgerald wrote a friend. ?'Zelda and five men in Harvey Firestone?'s car and not one of us drew a sober breath… It was the damndest party ever held in Princeton & everyone in the University will agree?" (Turnbull, 107). The inscription is particularly appropriate in that This Side of Paradise is a romantic evocation of Fitzgerald?'s Princeton days, begun while he himself was still an undergraduate there. ?"This Side of Paradise achieved immense social impact. Daring and bold for its time, the novel projected new freedom-to flirt, smoke, pet, drink and dance. It functioned as a kind of bible for the Jazz Age among the nation?'s youth, catapulting Fitzgerald to overnight fame?" (Nolan, 37-38).Bruccoli A5.1.a. Bruccoli & Clark I:131.A bit of light dampstaining to top margin of some leaves, one-inch open tear to bottom margin of page 177. Some light spotting to original cloth.

Many that originally appeared in the 'Later Work' are now transferred to this volume, and conversely, in order to preserve a proper chronological sequence." This book is "good only" with a serious once-inch frayed spot to top corner of spine, and a rear board slightly warped so it wants to stand open by an extra half-inch. The original, printed, unpriced heavy brown paper dust jacket is also "good only," with top inch of spine missing and two tape ghosts to rear panel, where pieces of nitrate tape (now gone) were used to close a partial tear. (The heavy paper is actually capable of coming apart in layers.) One of these dark rectangles passes through the stylized Beardsley signature device (originally "from the reverse cover of 'Salome'"), picked up and copied to DJ rear panel here from rear board of this book. Jacket had separated along spine and a few small pieces of "Magic" tape have been used to verso only to hold jacket together sufficiently for placement in current Brodart protector. Moderate foxing to endpapers and some text pages, though the plates (which make up most of the book), having been printed on a better, coated stock, remain lovely and largely unaffected by foxing. So why is this book of some value? First, it's holding together. The glued binding is usually described as "perished," but all 157 plates here remain bound in place. And, of course, there's the presence of the rarely seen original dust jacket. Tiny bookseller's label indicates this copy original sold at Swain's, 123 Pitt St., Sydney, and there are some 1960s Australian newspaper clippings concerning revival of interest in Beardsley laid in; it's possible this book (while hardly pristine) benefited from its long stay in a moderate antipodean climate.       Methuen 1920 - Tenth edition. Original red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper, "Catherine Willard from her friend Joseph Conrad 1st Jan 1921". A very good copy indeed with minor wear to the spine ends and some cracking to the front hinge. Catherine Willard (1898-1954) was a noted screen actress and leading lady. She met Conrad in about 1920 through her mother, Grace, who at the time was an interior designer and helping the Conrads furnish their new home, Oswalds, in Bishopsbourne, Kent. She was establishing herself as an actress and was about the same age as the Conrad's son, Borys. The latter suspected his parents of attempting to line her up as a future daughter in law. Conrad was writing his dramatic adaptation of The Secret Agent at the time and had Willard in mind for the heroine. He sent the finished manuscript of the play to her shortly before his death in 1924, and it is probable that he gave her this copy to familiarise herself with the novel, in the hope she would take the part, whilst he finished the play. The Secret Agent has long been regarded as one of Conrad's finest and most enduring novels and was a key influence on both Graham Greene and Eric Ambler. It is notably rare in a presentation state, even as a reprint. "The Secret Agent depicts the atmosphere of Edwardian London in a psychological thriller of the anarchist underworld. Conrad's wit and chivalrous magnanimity are at their airiest in this novel." (Connolly) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed, in Hebrew, 8vo, Berlin, Nov. 26, 1924

Ben-Gurion emphasizes the importance of talented labor in Palestine. He was in Berlin trying to secure a visa into Poland. In the mid-1920s a large number of Polish Jews immigrated to Palestine due to the political and economic crises in Poland the Johnson-Lodge Immigration Act passed by the U.S. Congress which curtailed mass immigration to America. If Ben-Gurion was trying to enter Poland (the country of his birth) to promote immigration to Palestine, he was not successful. He begins this letter telling his friends that "he is unable to get a visa to go to Poland and must return to Aretz." The letter deals with Ben-Gurion's strategy to promote immigration to Palestine and to create "a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz." Ben-Gurion says that upon his return to Aretz, his first concern will be "to increase the Aliya of Halutzim [pioneering aliya], creating a firm bond between the Histadrut and the Hehalutz, and making the central role of our movement abroad the development of Hehalutz." He continues, "At the moment I see two Histadruts which contain within the creative forces of our movement: the Workers Histadrut in Aretz and the Hehalutz Histadrut abroad. The strength, value, talent, greatness, influence and success of one is tied to the other. The fates of both are intertwined." He then asks his friends to "prepare the Hehalutz for its great destiny," a job he notes as being a great responsibility and hard work. He assures them that the "Histadrut will help as much as it can." The letter is signed, "D. Ben-Gurion." Israel's General Federation of Labor, the Histadrut, was an organization of trade unions established in 1920 during the British Mandate for Palestine. It was founded by Ben-Gurion and others to look out for the interest of Jewish workers and designed to "form a tightly controlled autonomous Jewish economic state within the Palestine economy. It functioned as much more than a traditional labor union, providing... social services and security, setting up training centers, helping absorb new immigrants... teaching them Hebrew.... "[see, section on British Palestine Mandate]. As the goal at the time was to increase the number of Jews going to settle in Palestine, a strong bond needed to be secured between the Histadrut and those in the Hehulutz who were helping in countries abroad to teach, train and compel Jews to immigrate to Palestine. The job of the Hehalutz, which was primarily a youth movement, an umbrella of the Zionist Youth Movement, was to bring Jews to Israel, training them for pioneer life in skilled trades. As early at 1924, Ben-Gurion was trying to get more skilled immigrants to Israel. He felt that the only way was to get the Hehalutz to work hand in hand with the trade unions and to promote all that they were doing for workers in Palestine. Ben-Gurion, in this letter, is emphasizing his desire to see that the two, the pioneers in Palestine and those abroad who were to help train skilled workers and promote the Histadrut, work together to form a state that could be independent. Ben-Gurion, a major Zionist leader, led the Jewish community in Palestine on its struggle for an independent Jewish state.
