The topic of this book is archaeological and historical research on religious paintings from the first eight centuries after Christ's birth and found in Buddhist caves of in the vicinity of Kucha. Albert Grünwedel [1856-1935] was a German indologist, tibetologist, archaeologist, and explorer of Central Asia. With thanks to the Brill Humanities lectures on Dunhuang for the following: The so-called Turfan expeditions made by the Germans in the first quarter of the 20th century were not in fact limited to Turfan but also encompassed Kucha, Kharashahr and Maral-Bashi. During the Han-Tang period Kucha was a large Silk Road kingdom but culturally part of the region where the Tocharian languages were in use. In addition, in this region in addition to Buddhist monastery sites also seen in Khotan, a large number of Buddhist cave temples were preserved. The multitude of Buddhist wall paintings that survived in these caves are an important source for the study of Buddhist art on the Northern Route. The Tocharian B dialect used in Kucha survived in both Buddhist scriptures and secular documents, which remain a major source for the study of the Kucha kingdom around the 7th century.. First German Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Limited Edition.

Poems : With an Introduction by Siegfried Sassoon

Chatto & Windus, 1920. 1st edition. Hardcover. The original red cloth is in good condition, slightly puckered in a few places, and slightly paled at the spine and across the top inch of the rear board, but the printed paper label on the spine is completely intact. The pages are very clean indeed, a little light browning to the rep, fractional spotting on pp ii and iii, very small ink initial from 1921 on the fep, a bookplate on the fpd of Anthony Hobson, one of the most distinguished book-collectors and bibliophiles of the 20th century. Unusually, the tissue guard over the frontispiece photograph of the author (the last such photograph taken of him, in Hastings in 1918) has not browned the title page. Posthumously published, this fragile book is generally considered to be the most important collection of poems from the First World War, even more than those of Siegfried Sassoon, who championed Owen's work and contributed the famous introduction to this volume.

Plastic Surgery of the Face, based on selected Cases of War Injuries of the Face including Burns. With original Illustrations. With Chapter on the Prosthetic Problems of Plastic Surgery by Capt. W. Kelsey Fry and Remarks on Anæsthesia by Capt. R. Wade.

London, Henry Frowde & Hodder and Stoughton, 1920. Small folio. Original full browish red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and black lettering to front board. Hinges weak and worn. Capitals worn. Corners a bit bumped. Internally nice and clean. Richly illustrated throughout. (2), XII, (2), 408 pp.. Rare first edition of this milestone of modern medicine, Gillies' groundbreaking work, which founded plastic surgery. "Rhinoplasty, skin grafts, and facial reconstructions have been practised for centuries. However, it was New Zealander Harold Delf Gillies who standardised these techniques and established the discipline of 'plastic surgery'. In 1920, his text book "Plastic Surgery of the Face" was published, setting down the principles of modern plastic surgery; principles which were adopted by surgeons from every part of the world. The British Medical Journal described it as "one of the most notable contributions made to surgical literature in our day". The "New York Medical Journal" said that "his are the greatest of all contributions to the advance of this interesting reparative work." (C.J. Williams: Harold Gillies. Aesthetic Reconstructor). The First World War posed a novel challenge to the surgeons of Europe. The introduction of more destructive weapons resulted in devastating injuries, many of them facial, as in trench warfare the head was more exposed than the rest of the body, meaning that soldiers' faces were often shattered or burnt beyond recognition. Despite the best efforts of surgeons, many soldiers were left hideously disfigured and it was clear that a new type of surgery was needed. Realizing this urgent need, Harold Gillies, a young surgeon from New Zealand operating out of Aldershot hospital in England, began performing operations which involved rebuilding the face by taking tissue from other parts of the body. Due to his endeavours, Harold Delf Gillies is now known as the father of plastic surgery. This pioneering work describes for the first time Gillies' major inventions that came to establish modern plastic surgery and which became standard practice in the field. The most notable of these inventions was the pedical tube (a tube of living tissue which would increase the blood supply to grafts, close them to infection, and be far less liable to contract or degenerate as the older methods were). This innovation proved extremely successful. The pedicle tube simplified grafting and made it more certain that a shattered face would be recognizable again. As Gillies later stated, this was "a major breakthrough, which I had good reason to be proud of."Another major invention described here for the first time is the "epithelial outlay technique", which enabled surgeons to restore function and appearance to reverted eyelids. "A considerable amount of doubting interest was aroused," Gillies wrote, "but when in two weeks the stitches were removed... there was shining before us the most perfect lid we had so far accomplished".Gillies was also the first surgeon to make pictorial records of pre- and post-facial reconstruction of faces, as will be witnessed in the present work, but his perhaps greatest innovation was the pioneering of what it now known as "cosmetic surgery"."Rebuilding the face by taking tissue from other parts of the body was not a new idea. For centuries, Indian surgeons had been practicing a form of rhinoplasty, where crescent shaped flaps of skin were drawn from patients' foreheads and fashioned into substitute noses. During the 19th century, the French and Germans had developed a technique whereby skin could be transferred from one part of the body to another.Indeed, by the time Gillies arrived on the scene, they had made considerable progress in plastic work "but appearance was of secondary importance": "No one, it seemed, had given serious consideration to the aesthetic side, not even the French, who might be thought sensitive to it."For Gillies, plastic surgery not only involved restoring function but also making the person look normal and sometimes more beautiful than before. He was driven by the idea that the surgeon should be creative, imaginative - in fact an artist. He described his work at Aldershot as "a strange new art", and indeed it was, for prior to Gillies there was little concern for how the patient looked. Gillies never wavered in his belief. Many years later, at the first International Congress of Plastic Surgery in Stockholm (1955), he declared; "within us all there is an overwhelming urge to change something ugly and useless into some other thing more beautiful and more functional"." (Williams). "[D]uring my life I have only known three surgeons who were undoubtedly first-class. They were Geoffery Jeferson, Harold Gillies and Russell Brock. Apart from Arbuthnot Lane, who was before my time, they are the only men in Europe or America who have taken a branch of surgery and by their own effort, by their leadership, their research and craftsmanship, have left it far higher than they found it. To say that of Gillies is an understatement: he invented plastic surgery. There was no plastic surgery before he came. Everything since then, no matter whose name be attached to it, was started by Gillies, perfected by him and handed on by him to lesser men, who have often claimed it as their own." Limitation page with a convincing "signature" of Dulac, which appears to be a forgery. Hughey 54. A BEAUTIFULLY BOUND COPY IN PRISTINE CONDITION. In an appropriately pearled binding, this is a beautiful copy of a book celebrated for its exotic illustrations. Leonard Rosenthal was an internationally famous pearl merchant who wrote this book as a love letter to those gems of the sea that had made him a wealthy man. He discusses pearls in history, myth, and legend, as well as in commerce, with attention to the then-new process of culturing pearls. Rosenthal wanted Dulac to illustrate the 1919 first edition, but the illustrator was too busy with other work. When Dulac's schedule finally allowed him time to complete the watercolors for the project, Rosenthal had the present edition published. Dulac's plates were immediately recognized as quite special, with the London "Times" critic declaring them to be "Dulac at his best." The reviewer for "The International Studio" wrote that "in 'The Kingdom and the Pearl' [Dulac] used the conventional Persian style without perspective, rich in decorative forms and jewel-like colours, bringing out the beauty of minute things by the use of colour and graceful line." Hughey unabashedly declares the illustrations to be works of "true genius." First Printing with these Illustrations. No. 430 OF 1,500 COPIES. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Ara Vos Prec

London: The Ovid Press,, 1920. Quarto. Original yellow cloth-backed black boards, black-coated endpapers, white paper title label to spine printed in black, edges untrimmed. Initials by Edward Wadsworth. Corners bumped, a few pale markings to boards, spine-label rather rubbed, edges toned, inner hinges cracked. A very good copy First edition, first impression, out-of-series copy from a print-run of 264, this copy signed by the author on the title page, with his manuscript correction substituting "Vos" for "Vus" in the title. Explaining the error, Eliot wrote to Gallup that "The correct title of the book is Ara Vos Prec. It only happened to be Vus on the title page because I don't know Provençal, and I was quoting from an Italian edition of Dante the editor of which apparently did not know Italian either"; the mistake was noticed in time for the correct title to be printed on the spine-label. His third book of verse, copies of Ara Vos Prec are becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly in this unusual state, the only other copy we have handled having been one of 220 numbered copies signed by the author.

Fine original portrait drawing by Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971), titled by the artist "Franz Lehar (drawn from life)" and signed by Dolbin just below the portrait

[Vienna]. [ca. 1920]. The composer is depicted in profile, wearing collar and tie. Executed in pen and ink and black chalk on a light yellow background wash. 343 x 250 mm. . "[Lehar] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." Andrew Lamb in Grove online Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack, 1883-1971) was born in Vienna and studied there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States.

[Ithaca, New York and Santiago, Chile] 1920 - mm (). Nine volumes. Original cloth bindings of green, brown, or patterned cloth, titles handwritten on spines in white ink. Five of the notebooks almost entirely composed of hand-drawn anatomical or botanical illustrations, two other notebooks with numerous hand-drawn illustrations. With maps, news clippings, and other ephemera laid in. Minimal rubbing to bindings, leaves variably toned because of poor quality paper, minor soiling, but generally excellent, with no significant condition issues. This is a collection of laboratory and field notes compiled by Cornell University student Herbert E. Wickenheiser, who matriculated there in 1920, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1924 and a Master of Science in 1925. The subjects covered are General Botany and General Zoology (1920-21); Field and Expedition Notes (made during work in) Ecuador, 1922 & Michigan, 1923 (with a number of ephemera laid in: five printed maps, three hand-drawn maps, two outlines for talks, an envelope and several paper bookmarks); Entomology (1923); Limnology (1923); Histology (1924); Comparative Anatomy (1924-25); and Invertebrate Zoology (1925). The final volume, "Chile Journal Notes," covers a post-graduate period from May through December of 1926, when Wickenheiser was teaching at the Instituto Ingles in Santiago and doing field work in the surrounding countryside. The Field and Expedition Notes and the Chile Journal are primarily in typescript; the rest are handwritten, generally in ink on lined paper. It is interesting to see Wickenheiser's anatomical drawing progress from the simple outlines drawn by the freshman to the delicately shaded, accomplished work of the graduate student. The Chile Journal is perhaps the most interesting volume, because in it, we find Wickenheiser the man, as well as the scientist, reflecting on philosophical and moral issues. His time in Chile must have had a profound effect: his first published work was a volume entitled "Santiago Poems and Other Verses," issued in 1932. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris: Aux Editions Lucien Vogel, 1920. n. Hardcover. A Treasure Trove of Parisian Fashion Plates from the 1920s. 248 x 197 mm (9 3/4 x 7 3/4"). Six volumes, containing all issues for the years 1920, 1921, and 1922. Dark blue sharkskin over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titling, marbled endleaves. Profusely illustrated with color illustrations in the text and in advertisements (many full-page) and WITH 234 (of 236) POCHOIR ART DECO FASHION PLATES BY GEORGE BARBIER, ANDRÉ MARTY, and others, SOME HEIGHTENED WITH SILVER OR GOLD (lacking plates 68 and 70 from the 1921 volume). Spines sunned to dark brown, joints and extremities a little rubbed, two leaves coming loose, isolated minor offsetting, but a pleasing copy and certainly a fine set internally--clean and fresh, with vivid coloring. These issues of a luxury women's magazine feature fashion illustrations from the zenith of the Art Deco period, with the designs of the great couturiers Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin, Worth, Georges Doeuillet, and Madeleine Vionnet depicted by leading artists, including George Barbier, André Marty, Charles Marin, Pierre Brissard, Siméon, and Benito. With a title that translates to "Journal of Good Taste" and a subscription price that equalled $425 per year in today's money, Lucien Vogel's "Gazette du Bon Ton" was geared toward the elite women who wore custom-fitted designer clothes, changed dresses four or five times a day, vacationed in exotic locales, and regularly attended glittering balls. This elegant femme du monde is portrayed by the illustrators in dramatic vignettes displaying glorious couture. In addition to the fashion plates, there are articles on such timeless women's magazine topics as hair styles, flirting, and prime honeymoon locales, as well as reviews of music and art. The "Gazette" was founded by publisher Lucien Vogel in 1912 as a luxury magazine, printed on heavy stock with copious richly colored illustrations. Publication was suspended in 1915, due to World War I, and resumed in 1920, continuing through 1925. Copies most frequently turn up in the marketplace for single or part years, and they are very frequently in lamentable condition.

Hardcover. 419 x 292 mm (16 1/2 x 11 1/2"). xi, [i], 360 pp. ONE OF 80 PAPER COPIES for sale (of 105 printed), along with six copies on vellum. Original linen-backed blue paper boards, printed paper label on spine. Fine printed initials in red and blue designed by Graily Hewitt for this edition. Text printed in black, red, and blue. Front pastedown with bookplate of William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (1903-48). Hornby 29; Franklin, p. 239 (noting 10 copies on vellum). Covers with a number of superficial marks and a handful of small abrasions (two more prominent), faint fading along two edges of each board, but a surprisingly solid copy, with only trivial wear to corners, and internally pristine. More than seven years in production (owing partly to World War I), the present elegant "Decameron," like other large format Ashendene books, is sumptuous without being self-consciously grandiose. With one of the smallest press runs among the later Ashendene books, it is printed entirely in Italian, including even the colophon (a fact that did not prevent a copy from being destroyed in 1927 by the U.S. Post Office in Kansas on account of its "immoral" content). Among the most celebrated and influential works of the period, the "Decameron" features stories of love, chivalry, and roguery that give us an inimitable picture of 14th century Italian society. The final story, that of Patient Griselda, was retold in Latin by Petrarch and in English by Chaucer, while the tale of the woman healer Juliet of Narbonne was adapted by Shakespeare in "All's Well that Ends Well." Son of a Florentine merchant, Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-75) wrote widely, but it is the "Decameron" that has proved itself a timeless classic. Our earlier owner, William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden, was the son of Frederick Smith, Hornby's college classmate and later his employer. Frederick had inherited from his own father the famous W. H. Smith company, the long-lived firm that became Britain's chief retailer of books, stationery, magazines, newspapers, and entertainment products. According to DNB, Frederick made "the master-stroke of his business life" when he hired Hornby in 1893, the latter proving "a decisive businessman whose work sustained and enhanced the firm's performance," chiefly by having the vision to establish the network of bookshops that made the company world-famous. For his part, employment at Smith's provided Hornby with a comfortable living, and allowed him to pursue his avocation as a printer. Because of their size and generally fragile materials, the large format linen-backed Ashendene volumes like this one are now difficult to find except in unflattering condition.
