An absolutely fine copy in the original 'spider-web' glassine dust jacket and the original pictorial box. Carlo Lorenzini, better known by his pen name Carlo Collodi (1826-1890) born in Tuscany, was a children's writer who wrote the world-renowned fairy tale The Adventures of Pinocchio. Lovingly crafted by a woodcarver named Gepetto in a small Italian village near Florence, Pinocchio was created as a wooden puppet - but he dreamed of becoming a real boy. The name Pinoccio has also been used as a character who is prone to telling lies and fabricating stories for various reasons. The story has appeared in many adaptations in other media. Pinocchio has been called an icon of modern culture and one of the most re-imagined characters in the pantheon of children's literature.Maria Louise Kirk (1860-1938) was born in Lancaster, near Philadelphia. She was educated at the School of Design for Women and Academy of Fine Arts (both in Philadelphia). She exhibited her artwork in Philadelphia, where she got an award in 1894. Maria Kirk's characteristic style included exceptionally technically-well-executed children, with bright foregounds and foreboding dark backgrounds. Her characters are stylized, and statuesque in their quiet beauty. She illustrated many other books including George MacDonald’s At the Back of the North Wind (1904) and The Princess and Curdie (1914), Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies, and Johanna Spyri's Heidi (1915). Japan also held control over Korea, the lower half of Karafuto Island, Taiwan [Formosa]. * There is a key at the lower left, showing statute miles, kilometers, railroads and projected railroads. * On the verso is an extensive index of countries, islands, lakes, mountains, rivers, towns, which occupies about 3/4 of the verso. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Modes et Manières d'aujourd'hui. 1920 (neuvième année) : Robert Bonfils

Corrard Pierre 1920 - UN ÉTAT PARFAIT. UNE PROVENANCE EXCEPTIONNELLE. UN EXEMPLAIRE SANS ÉQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY.

Springer, Berlin 1920 - First edition, in the original printed wrappers, of the first description of what later became known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or CJD, following its independent identification by Alfons Jakob one year later. "Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and Alfons Jakob independently authored clinical and pathologic descriptions of a new syndrome in the 1920s. This syndrome, which subsequently came to be named after them, was characterized by dementia, motor and coordination abnormalities, a fatal course, and pathologic findings of diffuse spongiform neuronal degeneration. Although it appeared for many years to be little more than a medical curiosity, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease attained widespread attention by its pathologic similarity to kuru and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, ‘mad cow disease.’ Because there are sporadic, familial, and iatrogenic forms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, it is considered to have both genetic and infectious aspects. Although its causation has for some time been ascribed to ‘slow viruses,’ the etiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is currently thought to be due to prions, small proteinaceous infectious particles that have genetic encoding. The debate regarding whether the appearance of atypical Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can be linked to the epidemic of ‘mad cow disease’ is currently unresolved" (Sternbach et al, p. 701)."While working at Alzheimer’s neuropsychiatric clinic, ‘Creutzfeldt studied the case of a 22-year old woman suffering from tremors, spasticity, and pyramidal signs. She became ataxic and demented. Her later symptoms included nystagmus, rigidity, myoclonus, and mutism; she ultimately died in status epilepticus 12 months after the onset. At Autopsy, Creutzfeldt found moderate cerebral atrophy with a patchy diffuse neuronal loss, pronounced astroglial hypertrophy, and bilateral degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. Creutzfeldt did not mention either neuronal vacuolation or a spongy state. Because of the war, publication was delayed until 1920. In 1921, Alfons Jakob (1884-1931) described three cases of ‘spastic pseudosclerosis, disseminated encephalomyelopathy’, and subsequently reported two other cases [‘Über eigenartige Erkrankungen des Zentralnervensystems mit bemerkenswerten anatomischen Befunden,’ Zeitschrift für die gesamte Neurologie und Psychiatrie 64, 147–228]. Jakob had examined Creutzfeldt’s slides, and noting similarities among some of their cases, grouped them together as examples of ‘spastic pseudosclerosis’, a term Creutzfeldt disagreed with, believing their cases constituted a new clinical entity" (Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences, Vol. 1, p. 898). Creutzfeldt’s material was lost during World War II. "Hans-Gerhard Creutzfeldt (1885-1964) was born in Harburg, Germany, and studied medicine in Jena, Rostock, and Kiel, where he received his MD in 1908. He wrote his thesis on tumors of the pituitary gland. From 1910 to 1912, he worked as a ship’s doctor and then studied neuropathology with Ludwig Edinger in 1912. He spent 2 years with Alois Alzheimer in Breslau (present Wroclaw, Poland). After World War I, he worked with Walther Spielmeyer in Munich and with Ernst Siemerling in Kiel. For the next 14 years, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry of the Charité Hospital in Berlin with Karl Bonhoeffer. He returned to Kiel in 1938, was appointed director of Neuropsychiatry at the Christian-Albrechts University, and served there until 1953. He was one of the few academics who refused to join the Nazi party. He became the first postwar Rector of the University (1945-46). He ended his academic career at the Psychiatric Institute of Munich in 1955. He died after a long illness in 1964" (ibid.).Garrison-Morton 4719.1.       Hermannstadt W Krafft 1920 - 4°. 8 Blätter. Mit 12, meist nahezu blattgr. Farblithographien. ? Vier Bilduntertexte in siebenbürgisch-sächsischer Mundart. ? Sehr guter Erhaltungszustand. Der Einband ist nur gering berieben. Vorderer Innendeckel teilw. mit Abrieb, etwa 2 : 2 cm.       1920 - New York | London: D. Appleton and Company, 1920. Original maroon cloth. First Edition, first printing, of Edith Wharton's best-known book -- the tale of a love triangle bound by the conventions of New York society -- between Newland Archer, his fiancée and then wife May Welland, and her cousin Ellen Olenska (newly separated from a Polish count).~Edith Wharton's evocation of the New York of her girlhood, with its rigid conventions and adherence to form, is brilliantly drawn and it is here that she comes closest to the work of her friend Henry James. The narrative is clear and the prose impeccable. The characters are acutely observed and, while the author's sympathies are inevitably on the side of Ellen, she succeeds in being objective about May, who for all her limitations is a sympathetic character. [CGEL]~THE AGE OF INNOCENCE won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Novels (the first won by a woman), it was dramatized by Margaret Ayer Barnes in 1928, and it was placed on the silver screen by Martin Scorcese with considerable success in 1993 (starring Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer).~This copy is from the first printing (with a "(1)" at the end of the text, and with the many original text points enumerated by Garrison, which were altered in subsequent printings). It is in very good condition (spine a bit faded as usual, light wear at the extremities, a few minor cover marks); the original endpapers remain intact, and the spine ends remain more intact than is the case for most copies -- as a very delicate cloth was unfortunately used for this binding. With all of its popularity in recent decades, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE has become a rather scarce title. Garrison A30.I.a; one of the Modern Library "100 Best Novels in the English Language since 1900."       NP, Kyoto 1920 - Oblong folio (11.5 x 15"). [1] leaf (handwritten text), [72] leaves (plates). Original string-bound wrappers with handwritten title in Japanese calligraphy on front cover. This unique work contains 72 striking hand-painted illustrations of figurative designs for the silk lining of haori jackets, a long traditional Japanese jacket, with deep, kimono style sleeves, designed to be worn on top of a kimono. Exemplifying the typical Japanese boy's school uniform of the early twentieth century, these exquisite plates feature examples of splendidly hand-painted images relating to a wide range of subjects, including scenes of anthropomorphic animals (rabbits, mice) in amusing scenes; Noh actors performing; musicians (mostly flute players), and traditional outdoor Japanese scenes (children playing, farmer heading home after his work in the fields, Noblemen accompanied with their servants, fishermen, etc.). Each character is depicted in traditional dress, with many wearing very high Geta shoes. Some of the most caracteristic and iconic elements of Japanese landscape are featured in the background, such as Mount Fuji, cherry trees in bloom, Temples, etc. These beautiful designs over mostly blue background were painted with colorful opaque pigments and Gofun onto backed rice paper. Each plate has a descriptive small white cartouche hand-captioned in Japanese. Wrappers partly creased and darkened. Fore-edge of text leaf partly creased and damp-stained. Sporadic creasing to corners throughout. One plate is loose, but present. Lower corner of the last two plates chipped, thus partly affecting images. Text and captions in Japanese. Wrappers in overall poor to fair, interior in good to very good condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Leipzig: Verlag von Felix Meiner,, 1920. Ihr Mak und ihre form. Octavo. Original wrappers, title label to front wrapper. Fading to spine and lightly around the edges, very slight spotting within, an exceptional survival in excellent condition. First edition, a superb copy of this rare and influential work, in which the psychiatrist Hoche (1865-1943) and the lawyer Binding (1841-1920) for the first time explicitly asserted that the killing of people with disabilities, including wounded veterans from the First World War (the care of whom was creating a strain on the German economy), would be justified. This work prepared the way for the Nazi's euthanasia programs and eventually their monstrous Final Solution to the Jewish question.

The Australian Victories in France in 1918. Second edition.

London: Hutchinson & Co., 1920 - Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine. From the library of Admiral of the Fleet John Rushworth Jellicoe, first Earl Jellicoe (1859-1935), commander of the Grand Fleet at Jutland (31 May - 1 June 1916). A very good copy. Portrait frontispiece, 30 plates from photographs, 9 coloured folding maps. Second edition, published the same year as the first. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To the Viscount Jellicoe, from the Author, John Monash Lieut-General, Dec. 1924". A remarkable association copy, linking two of the leading commanders of the Great War: Sir John Monash (1865-1931) and Viscount Jellicoe (1859-1935). Monash was appointed by Haig to lead the 1st Anzac Corps in 1918; his skilful handling of his troops and inspired tactical thinking contributed greatly to the Allied breakthrough in the final year of the war. Liddell Hart described him as having "probably. the greatest capacity for command in modern war among all who held command [in the BEF]". Jellicoe, of course, presided over the strategic British victory at Jutland in May-June 1916. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
