Autograph Letter Signed [-- regarding Spiritualism]

1920. [Doyle on spiritualism] Two pages (both sides of one leaf of stationery of The Grand Hotel, Melbourne). Addressed to "My dear Seymour," and dated Nov. 2, 1920. The text of the letter reads as follows:~No, your Russian idea though noble and unselfish is, I am sure, extravagant. You have your clear duty with your regiment, your family and your surroundings. Do not reach out for more, but if more is ordained it will come to you with no doubt and no effort. If you take this spiritual matter seriously & quickly not only cultivate it but spread it around you, you will do great work. God has His own purposes in Russia and will pick up the right tool for His work, without the tool needing to worry over it.~I send you a "Harbinger of Light" with some account of our doings. Up to now I have been [?] upheld & feel as fit as when I started. Adelaide was glorious. Melbourne is heavy and material but we make an impression. I have one last meeting -- which will be a bumper -- and then to Sydney where we culminate, for New Zealand is of smaller importance. I am glad I came -- but I never had much say in the matter -- a tool also, but a very willing one.~I expect you will soon be in India again. Good luck to you wherever you go. Buy spiritual books freely for there is no such investment. Anything by or about Mrs Emma Hardinge Britton is worth getting -- "Autobiography" "19th Century Miracles" "American Spiritualism". She was a female St. Paul, with a man's virile brain, clear, fearless & herself a great medium. In A.J. Davis, Hardinge Britton, Stainton Moses, and Vale Owen you have the spiritual sequence.~All remembrances to your wife when you write | A Conan Doyle.~Although Conan Doyle expressed an interest in spiritualism as early as 1886, he became totally committed to it (and in spreading its word) after the deaths of family members in the Great War -- most notably his son Kingsley (who died just 25 months before this letter, ultimately from wounds suffered at the Somme in 1916), and his brother Brig. General Innes Doyle who died four months after Kingsley. In 1920-1921 he toured Australia and New Zealand giving lectures on the subject; in September 1921 was published his book THE WANDERINGS OF A SPIRITUALIST, about this tour -- in fact featuring a frontispiece portrait of himself "On the Warpath in [Melbourne] Australia."~"My dear Seymour" is almost certainly James B. Seymour, a conjurer who was a founder of "The Magic Circle," a group dedicated to the combination of prestidigitation and spiritualism -- and who, like Doyle, was a member of the Society for Psychical Research.~The letter is entirely devoted to spiritualism -- in fact Doyle seems to be telling Seymour how to get started. "The Harbinger of Light," begun in 1870, was and is the Australian monthly spiritualism newsletter; Britton, Davis, Moses and Vale were all well-known writers about spiritualism. "Your Russian idea" in the first sentence must have been a suggestion by Seymour, most likely regarding what Doyle referred to in WANDERINGS as "the Russian horror" -- the mass execution of Jews, then much in the news. It is known that Doyle and Seymour, though acquaintances, were not exactly friends; it is further known that by February 1922 (just 15 months later), Seymour broke with Doyle over the issue of spirit photography (Doyle believed in it, Seymour and many others did not). (Our thanks to Alexis Barquin of the ACD Encyclopedia for much of this information on Seymour.)~The letter is in very good condition, with one small smudge in the ink and with a few short tears (and one small gap) at the folds; there is faint evidence that some sort of tape resided there.

Bibliographisch ist das Werk kaum nachzuweisen. Es findet sich erst bei Dutel 339. Nicht bei Pia. Und nicht bei Newsletter 3, van Maele Bibliographie S. 108ff. Some foxing to endpapers and half title leaf, else a near fine copy. with bright, unfaded binding. A nice copy of a very scarce book.. (#149949). First edition. "Complex supernatural romance, in which psychic girl's love for 'a complete bounder' leads to projection of his image as an idealized dream- lover, a sort of Doppelganger cum vampiric incubus. Structured as a mystery, true nature of haunting only gradually revealed. Subtle, thought- provoking, intriguing use of dreams; oddly gentle conception of Doppelganger's nature seems to anticipate Jungian animus/anima theory. A superior weird thriller of the period, equal to better known classics such as Kerruish's THE UNDYING MONSTER (1922)." - Robert Knowlton. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 235. Reginald 15634.         The international Jew

Dearborn, MI: Dearborn Publishing Co. 12mo (19.2 cm, 7.6"). 4 vols. I: 235, [1] pp. II: 255, [1] pp. III: 256 pp. IV: 246 pp.. 1920–22 First collected edition of the now-infamous gathering of anti-Semitic articles from the Dearborn Independent, representing the most notable of the Henry Ford-sponsored diatribes against the "Jewish Menace." The four volumes are subtitled "The World's Foremost Problem," "Jewish Activities in the United States," "Jewish Influences in American Life," and "Aspects of Jewish Power in the United States"; among the accusations levelled herein are that the Jews corrupted professional baseball, replaced respectable music with degrading jazz, and destroyed the quality of whisky, in addition to the standard smears regarding finance and politics. => The original paper wrappers are bound in in each volume. Contemporary pebbled red cloth; light wear to extremities, bindings moderately sunned with spines lightened evenly, covers variously. Vol. II with front wrapper creased and a small spot of adhesion to title-page, vol. III wrapper with adhesions to inner margin of title-page; vol. IV wrapper with lower outer corner chipped; pages with occasional smudges, generally clean. => An entirely innocuous- and anonymous-looking quartet, the spines being without labels.

Fine original portrait drawing by Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971), titled by the artist "Franz Lehar (drawn from life)" and signed by Dolbin just below the portrait

[Vienna]. [ca. 1920]. The composer is depicted in profile, wearing collar and tie. Executed in pen and ink and black chalk on a light yellow background wash. 343 x 250 mm. . "[Lehar] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." Andrew Lamb in Grove online Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack, 1883-1971) was born in Vienna and studied there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States.

        Lorenzaccio. Tragödie in fünf Aufzügen.

München, Hoheneichen-Verlag, 1920. - "Halbleinen, 148 Seiten, 8°. (Mit Widmung "S.l. Ludwig Ringler herzlichst - Dietrich Eckart, M. 20. Febr. Adolf Hitler widmete u. a. Eckart sein 1925 erschienenes Buch Mein Kampf, in dem Hitler ihn a

Very slightly worn; creased at central fold. Envelope slightly worn and with small tears and chips at right edge. . The present letter mentions one of Caruso's last performances at the Metropolitan Opera: on December 14, he sang Don Carlo in Verdi's La Forza del Destino. After a final appearance in Halévy's La Juive, on December 24, he was forced to cancel the remainder of his season. Caruso then returned to Naples, where he died the following year, on August 2, 1921. Mrs. John S. Keith was a friend of Caruso's American wife, Dorothy Park Benjamin, and was matron of honor at Benjamin's marriage to Caruso on August 20, 1918.

Main Street: The Story of Carol Kennicott

New York: Harcourt Brace and Howe. 1920. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1920, First Edition, first issue with perfect type at folio on page 54 and 'may' on page 387. Hardcover. Very Good in a later issue dust jacket and custom blue morocco slipcase. Early fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and corners; 2 pinhole sized dents to the rear board; clean contents; sound binding. The jacket is likely from 1921 as it has 'Harcourt Brace and Co.' on the spine; it has the same image as the first (silhouette in front of the 'Rosebud Movie' billboard) and all of the advertised titles were published on or before 1921, when Harcourt Brace and Howe switched over to Harcourt Brace and Co. There is a blurb for 'Main Street' on the rear panel that notes 'Over 125,000 sold'. The price is $2.00. The jacket is still quite fresh, at least Very Good+: the spine panel is sunned just a touch, there is also very shallow chipping at the crown of the spine and the upper corners; finally, a single 1/2-inch closed snag to the top edge of the rear panel. DJ with reviews for the book on the front flap; $2.00 price present. A truly sparkling jacket. Clamshell slipcase in full blue morocco with gilt titles; Fine condition. We do not know how this later jacket came to be matched up with a first issue of the book. Digital images available upon request.

      - An Karl Jaenichen. ".

ILLUMINATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN GREEK ON PARCHMENT, Byzantine Empire, c. 1000-1100. 220 x 170 mm. 173 folios, some leaves wanting (collation, i3 ii-x8 xi6 [of 8; 2 leaves missing with text loss] xii-xvi8 xvii6 xviii6 [of 8; two leaves missing with text loss] xix-xxiii8), quires signed, written by one scribe in a calligraphic Perlschrift on 23 long lines (justification, 155 x 100 mm.), headings and initials in pale red, decorated headpieces in pale red at the start of each chapter, with pi-shaped illuminated headpiece at the beginning of Chapter 1 (f. 4) and narrow headbands in red ink at the beginning of each subsequent chapter. BINDING: Possibly fourteenth-century, judging from the type of blind-tooled ornaments, blind-tooled brown leather over wooden boards, of the ?"Greek?" type, with squared and grooved boards flush with the book block and no ridges on the spine, chain stitches on four sewing stations. TEXT: This manuscript is among the oldest witnesses of the most important and influential sacro-profane Greek florilegium, erroneously attributed to the seventh-century author St. Maximus the Confessor. The earliest witnesses to the text only date from the tenth century and was probably compiled at this time. The anthology contains quotes on moral and religious topics that circulated during the Middle Ages and was much mined as a source for fragments and testimonies by other Greek authors. Each of the 71 chapters presented here consists of excerpts related to a common topic like power and authority (ff. 38v-43v), death (ff. 112v-115v), goodness (ff. 147v-149), and even laughter (ff. 160v-162). These excerpts are arranged hierarchically, with Scripture coming first, then patristic writings, and, finally, classical Greek authors like Aristotle, Demosthenes, Diogenes, Euripides, Epicurus, and Socrates. Previously unknown to scholars and not appearing in any editions, this manuscript presents a version of the long recension of the text. PROVENANCE: This manuscript was made in the Byzantine Empire, possibly Constantinople, during the eleventh century, based on evidence of script and decoration. Part of a German private collection, Germany/Wiltshire (1920?-1988); sold London, Sotheby?'s, 6 December 1988, lot 26. Belonged to George A. Pervanas, of Athens (?); sale London, Sotheby?'s, 2 December 1997, lot 94. Belonged to Martin Schøyen, Norwegian businessman and book collector; his MS 2455. Full description and photographs available (TM 591).

Autograph Letter Signed ("A. Einstein"), in German.

[Berlin], June 30, 1920 - 4to. 1 page. Einstein on the value of relativity for philosophy. Einstein writes to Hans Reichenbach, the philosopher of science and an influential expositor of Relativity. In part (translation): "I am really very pleased that you want to dedicate your excellent brochure to me, but even more so that you give me such high marks as a lecturer and thinker. The value of the th.[eory] of rel.[ativity] for philosophy seems to me to be that it exposed the dubiousness of certain concepts that even in philosophy were recognized as small change. Concepts are simply empty when they stop being firmly linked to experiences. They resemble upstarts who are ashamed of their origins and want to disown them." The letter was published in the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein, vol 10, doc 66, pp 323-324 (CPAE Translation, vol 10, doc 66, p 201). Slightly uneven toning, a few spots in upper margin, two-hole punch at left margin, folding creases. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Memories of a Life spent between the Bread and the Fishes and the Days when all Cares were forgotten

[Reading: privately printed, 1920. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Original green textured cloth, titled stamped in gilt on upper board, speckled edges. Bookplate of O.M. Reed ("Omar") with his ownership signature dated August 1934 and annotations. Reed's draft of an essay and correspondence with A.E. Hobbs loosely inserted. Old cellotape mark along front pastedown where letter was tipped in. Fine. With 6 photographic plates. [41] pp. Typewritten text on rectos only. 1 vols. Square 8vo. Fisherman's Memoir: Pike and Thames Trout. Nostalgic privately produced memoir of angling in the Thames Valley a century ago. Chapman was a Reading tobacconist and a keen fisher, and he recounts his experiences fishing on private lakes, ponds, and local rivers, including the Kennet and Thames, as well as misadventures in boats, dense fogs, notable catches of Pike and Thames trout, and an incident of river pollution. The other copy we have seen varies slightly in the pagination and the page format. Reed and his correspondent, A.E. Hobbs, discuss the book's author and identify most of the places alluded to in Chapman's narrative, which includes a portrait of the author holding a 20-pound fish taken from the Thames. An uncommon work, produced in just a few copies, with an illuminating correspondence concerning this curious and interesting book. Not in Hampton's Angling Bibliography 1881-1949. Not in BL or OCLC

MAKS, VOET, CLICHÉFABRIEK Ons Boek, fraai gebonden boekwerk met geschreven teksten betreffende het gezin Henk Maks en Stijntje Voet (gehuwd Haarlem 28 april 1898) en hun dochter Christine Sandeune Maks (geb. Haarlem 7 november 1900). Ca. 200 p. (1898-1960), geschept papier in perkamenten band met gouden letters. Fraai!.

Later woonden zij in Den Haag.

The topic of this book is archaeological and historical research on religious paintings from the first eight centuries after Christ's birth and found in Buddhist caves in the vicinity of Kucha. Albert Grünwedel [1856-1935] was a German indologist, tibetologist, archaeologist, and explorer of Central Asia. With thanks to the Brill Humanities lectures on Dunhuang for the following: The so-called Turfan expeditions made by the Germans in the first quarter of the 20th century were not in fact limited to Turfan but also encompassed Kucha, Kharashahr and Maral-Bashi. During the Han-Tang period Kucha was a large Silk Road kingdom but culturally part of the region where the Tocharian languages were in use. In this region, in addition to Buddhist monastery sites also seen in Khotan, a large number of Buddhist cave temples were preserved. The multitude of Buddhist wall paintings that survived in these caves are an important source for the study of Buddhist art on the Northern Route. The Tocharian B dialect used in Kucha survived in both Buddhist scriptures and secular documents, which remain a major source for the study of the Kucha kingdom around the 7th century, Limited Edition
