        I. D. 1189. A Manual of Portugese East Africa.

London: His Majesty's Stationery Office,, 1920. Compiled by the Geographical Section of the Naval Intelligence Division, Naval Staff, Admiralty. [Together with the accompanying maps and map case]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, maps in the original dark blue cloth map case with functioning metal clasp. 11 (of 12) maps printed on 10 sheets (maps 6 & 7 printed on the same sheet); lacking map 4 (Mineral Areas). Embossed stamps of Liverpool Free Public library on covers of volume, accession numbers on spine, library label on rear pastedown, small stamps in some margins; binding shaken, inner joints split but quite firm, a few abrasions, map 1 toned. First and only edition, rare: not in Copac (British and Irish institutional libraries) or OCLC (institutional libraries worldwide); KVK locates one copy of the volume only (?-sterreichische Nationalbibliothek) and there is a complete set of the maps only in the National Library of Australia. A fascinating record of Mozambique drawn up by the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty, including chapters on "Government and Trading Companies", "Mining and other industries", communications, and "Political and Economic Conclusions". The maps include three large folding maps entitled "Mozambique", "Limpopo", and "Zanzibar". In the 19th century "Scramble for Africa" Portugal "claimed a swath of territory from present-day Mozambique to Angola. Although the Germans, whose territory bordered Mozambique to the north, accepted the Portuguese claims - establishing Mozambique's northern boundary - British claims to the region contradicted those of Portugal, leading to prolonged negotiations. However, the Portuguese crown was heavily in debt to British financiers, and the small country was no match for Britain's military; in 1891 Portugal was forced to accept Britain's definition of Mozambique's western and southern boundaries. Portugal had little hope of developing the entire region on its own, and so it turned to its familiar colonial strategy of leasing large tracts of land to private companies. Chartered companies were granted the privilege of exploiting the lands and peoples of specific areas in exchange for an obligation to develop agriculture, communications, social services, and trade. The Mozambique Company, the Niassa Company, and the Zambezia Company [controlled and financed by the British] were all established in this manner in the 1890s. Any economic development and investment in infrastructure was related directly to company interests and usually undertaken at African expense. Sugar, copra, and sisal plantations depending largely on conscripted labour and railways linking Beira with the British South Africa Company territory and British Nyasaland to the west and northwest were all developed and built at a high cost to the African workforce" (Encyclopaedia Britannica online).

        Carnet d'adresses

Manuscrit. Bon. cartonnage. In-8. 59 ff.

        Some Essays on Golf-Course Architecture.

London: Country Life … and George Newnes Ltd,, 1920. Octavo. Original blue paper-covered boards, blue cloth backstrip, spine lettered in black. 10 double-sided half-tone photographic plates. Contemporary Times Book Club ticket to rear pastedown. Extremities lightly bumped, spine toned, a couple of very small dents to the front board, light spotting to edges, very occasional foxing. A very good copy. First edition. "The burgeoning of golf clubs on the sandy heath lands around London at the end of the nineteenth century led to a corresponding growth in golf course design and Colt became one of the leading architects of the day … After the war he re-emerged at the height of his powers, initially in partnership with Alison and MacKenzie, but from 1928 with the more enduring combination of Alison and John S. F. Morrison. The firm of Colt, Alison, and Morrison Ltd remained a prominent force in British golf design for a decade after Colt's death. His list of courses after 1918 is an impressive one. He designed the new course at Sunningdale (1922), Moor Park West (1923), Burning Tree, Bethesda, Maryland (1924), Wentworth (1924), Milwaukee country club, Wisconsin (1929), and the sea course at Le Touquet (1930), and score of others" (ODNB). This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "To Mr Muntice, from Arthur Debenham May 24 1921", possibly the portrait photographer of that name (1845-1936) based in Ryde on the Isle of Wight and whose sitters included King Edward VII and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia on his final visit to England in 1910. Scarce in commerce and just five copies in UK libraries.

        The international Jew.

Dearborn, MI: Dearborn Publishing Co. 12mo (19.2 cm, 7.6"). 4 vols. I: 235, [1] pp. II: 255, [1] pp. III: 256 pp. IV: 246 pp.. 1920?-22 First collected edition of the now-infamous gathering of anti-Semitic articles from the Dearborn Independent, representing the most notable of the Henry Ford-sponsored diatribes against the "Jewish Menace." The four volumes are subtitled "The World's Foremost Problem," "Jewish Activities in the United States," "Jewish Influences in American Life," and "Aspects of Jewish Power in the United States"; among the accusations levelled herein are that the Jews corrupted professional baseball, replaced respectable music with degrading jazz, and destroyed the quality of whisky, in addition to the standard smears regarding finance and politics. => The original paper wrappers are bound in in each volume. Contemporary pebbled red cloth; light wear to extremities, bindings moderately sunned with spines lightened evenly, covers variously. Vol. II with front wrapper creased and a small spot of adhesion to title-page, vol. III wrapper with adhesions to inner margin of title-page; vol. IV wrapper with lower outer corner chipped; pages with occasional smudges, generally clean. => An entirely innocuous- and anonymous-looking quartet, the spines being without labels.

[Maine and various places in Europe, 1920. Oblong octavo albums. Original black morocco, spine gilt, titles as transcribed below. Albums with some shelf wear; European album slightly cocked, lower portion of front joint splitting. The photographs are clean and in excellent condition. An outstanding collection of photographic images of scenes in Maine, coastal France, and the Channel Islands. The photographs were taken by an MIT Professor who apparently vacationed in Maine on a regular basis, and who also visited England and France in the year before the outbreak of World War I. The albums of Maine images ably show the natural beauty of far western Maine, while the album of scenes in France and England captures life in small villages and towns in Normandy, Brittany, and the Channel Islands before the peace of the region was shattered by the Great War. Two of the albums feature silver gelatin prints that have been printed directly onto the album sheets, with accompanying handwritten captions. The third album consists of photographic prints affixed to sheets of the album. Though without ownership signatures, we attribute these albums to Ralph Restieaux Lawrence, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. These albums came with other photographic albums made by Lawrence on trips to the American West and Canada, featuring photographs done in a similar style, captioned and bound as these albums. Ralph Restieaux Lawrence (b. 1873) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and graduated from MIT in 1895. He taught electrical engineering at MIT from 1896 to 1941, and apparently enjoyed photography and traveling, as the present albums would indicate. The three albums are: [ALBUM ENTITLED Heald Pond Maine 1907]. Original oblong octavo album. [39] original photographic prints, most measuring approximately 3 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches, each print affixed to a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 8 x 10 inches. This album contains a series of lovely photographs of the area around Heald Pond, in west- central Maine, not far from the Canadian border. Heald Pond is known for its natural beauty - ably captured in these photographs - and for its hiking trails. The photographs in this album are uncaptioned, but show a number of images of the large pond and surrounding area, as well as cabins and campsites. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Europe 1913]. Original oblong octavo album. [162] original silver gelatin prints, measuring approximately 3 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches, each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 6 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. The pictures show scenes in France and England, mostly in the regions of Brittany and Normandy, the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, and Sark, and the towns of Warwick and Stratford-upon-Avon. Many of the photographs show life in villages or larger towns, such as Caen in Normandy. There are a number of photographs of scenes in and around the Brittany village of Concarneau, including market scenes, fetes, and scenes along the port, but other villages, such as Pont-Aven and Vitre are included as well. Many of the photographs in the British islands show castles, ruins, towns, and coastal scenes. In all, a magnificent series of photographs of this region on the verge of World War I. [ALBUM ENTITLED Photographs Attean Maine 1920]. Original oblong octavo album. [47] original silver gelatin prints, measuring on average 3 x 5, (one of them a panoramic photo measuring 3 x 13 1/2inches on a folded sheet) each printed directly onto a sheet in the album, the sheets measuring 7 x 9 1/2 inches. Each image is identified by a manuscript caption on the facing sheet. Attean Lake is a resort area located in west-central Maine, and this album of attractive silver gelatin prints shows scenes from a vacation taken there by Lawrence in 1920. The panoramic photograph is a lovely view of Attean Lake from a high perspective on nearby Mount Sally. There are several other pictures from Mount Sally, as well as images of camps, vistas from lake level, nearby woods, other ponds, etc.

[Angkor: Cambodia, 1920. Large folio album, leather spine, the front cover a tooled copper sheet representing the Bayon Temple. Front hinge cracking slightly. Ninety-three matte silver gelatin photographs, on sheets of slightly variable size but generally 30 x 24 cm.; images uniformly 23.5 x 16.5 cm. All photographs in excellent condition, tipped onto larger sheets, interleaved with protective tissue. A very handsome and impressive album of Angkor Wat, the Bayon Temple, and the larger environs of Angkor Thom, taken by an unidentified but professional photographer, almost certainly in the 1920s. The photographs depict architecture; sculptures both freestanding and as friezes; waterworks; and other features of the larger landscape of Angkor. Angkor, the largest archeology site in the world and once the largest city in the world, is justly celebrated as one of the most important monuments of human civilization. While building on the site began in the 9th century A.D., its most famous monuments, the Angkor Wat temple complex, the Bayon temple-mountain, and the environs of Angkor Thom, were mainly constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries. These remain some of the most impressive structures wrought by human hands, masterpieces of architecture and stone carving. While the temple of Angkor Wat has always been cared for by Buddhist monks, much of the rest of the vast site had been overtaken by the jungle when the first European photographer, John Thomson, visited in 1866. After Cambodia became a French protectorate in 1887, the site became the focus of intensive scrutiny, and in 1907 a massive program of reconstruction and reclamation from the encroaching jungle began. To some degree the progress of this work allows photographs to be dated, and on this basis, and after showing the album to distinguished archeologist Michael Coe (best known for his work in MesoAmerican archeology, but also the author of a book on Angkor), we date the photographs in the present album to the 1920s. This dating is also reflected in the style of the binding and album. The album contains ninety-three excellent matte silver gelatin photographs. While the photographer is unknown, the quality of the images and their composition and printing shows them to be the work of a professional. The first series of images focus on the Angkor Wat temple complex, showing both internal and external images as well as many smaller sculptures (many of these have since been moved from the site). The next series focuses on the great Bayon temple, and in particular the celebrated friezes which adorn it. From there the images move to other parts of Angkor Thom and the areas in the environs of the central temples. A handsome and significant album of photographs on the world's greatest archeological site, at a point when many parts of it were little disturbed.

        Eigenhändiger Brief m. U.

München, 31. VII. 1920. - Folio.

Paris: Collection Dada,, [1920-1]. Dessins par Ribemont-Dessaignes. Octavo. Original pale blue-grey wrappers, paper label on front cover. 3 illustrations by Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes. Spine toned, small loss of paper at foot, front cover faded, back cover patchily faded and lightly creased, internally paper toned; nevertheless a good copy of a fragile publication. First and limited edition, number 690 of 1,000 copies, scarce. An important publication in the Dadaist canon, published when Picabia was pulling away from Dadaism toward Surrealism. Ezra Pound claimed that "the renewal of literature during the early twentieth century can be understood by studying two publications: 'Blast' [the Vorticist magazine] and Picabia's Jésus-Christ Rastaquouère... (Pound defines 'rastaquouère' as a 'foreigner whose means of support are unknown; other dictionaries give such definitions as 'shabby adventurer' or 'doubtful member of the nobility'; one possible translation of Picabia's title would be 'Jesus Christ the No-Account Count')... Throughout Jésus-Christ Rastaquouère Picabia exalts materiality and attacks the subjective, the merely conceptual. His least favourite organ is the brain, and he finds various ways of demeaning or squashing it" (Hélène Aji ed., Ezra Pound and Referentiality, 2003, pp. 167-68).

A 2.5 inch crack at the base of the spine and the lower panel, a smaller tear at the base of the spine and the front panel and minor wear at the crown. A reissue of the first half of Rackham's lovely 1909 edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales including: Hansel and Grethel; The Twelve Dancing Princesses; The Fisherman and His Wife; The Frog Prince; Rapunzel; Red Riding Hood; Tom Thumb; and Rumpelstiltskin. Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and Barcelona and Rackham would influence heavily many illustrators, especially those of children's books, who came after him. "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature, while his gnomes, fairies and gnarled anthropomorphic trees in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens or A Midsummer Night's Dream represent his more fantastic side.... He was - and remains - a soloist in front of an orchestra, a player with the responsibility to interpret and add a personal lustre to great works with variations of infinite subtlety and grace." ["Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration," by James Hamilton, Pavilion Books, Ltd., London, 1990]. Near Fine in Very Good. dust jacket.

Autograph Letter Signed [-- regarding Spiritualism]

1920. [Doyle on spiritualism] Two pages (both sides of one leaf of stationery of The Grand Hotel, Melbourne). Addressed to "My dear Seymour," and dated Nov. 2, 1920. The text of the letter reads as follows:~No, your Russian idea though noble and unselfish is, I am sure, extravagant. You have your clear duty with your regiment, your family and your surroundings. Do not reach out for more, but if more is ordained it will come to you with no doubt and no effort. If you take this spiritual matter seriously & quickly not only cultivate it but spread it around you, you will do great work. God has His own purposes in Russia and will pick up the right tool for His work, without the tool needing to worry over it.~I send you a "Harbinger of Light" with some account of our doings. Up to now I have been [?] upheld & feel as fit as when I started. Adelaide was glorious. Melbourne is heavy and material but we make an impression. I have one last meeting -- which will be a bumper -- and then to Sydney where we culminate, for New Zealand is of smaller importance. I am glad I came -- but I never had much say in the matter -- a tool also, but a very willing one.~I expect you will soon be in India again. Good luck to you wherever you go. Buy spiritual books freely for there is no such investment. Anything by or about Mrs Emma Hardinge Britton is worth getting -- "Autobiography" "19th Century Miracles" "American Spiritualism". She was a female St. Paul, with a man's virile brain, clear, fearless & herself a great medium. In A.J. Davis, Hardinge Britton, Stainton Moses, and Vale Owen you have the spiritual sequence.~All remembrances to your wife when you write | A Conan Doyle.~Although Conan Doyle expressed an interest in spiritualism as early as 1886, he became totally committed to it (and in spreading its word) after the deaths of family members in the Great War -- most notably his son Kingsley (who died just 25 months before this letter, ultimately from wounds suffered at the Somme in 1916), and his brother Brig. General Innes Doyle who died four months after Kingsley. In 1920-1921 he toured Australia and New Zealand giving lectures on the subject; in September 1921 was published his book THE WANDERINGS OF A SPIRITUALIST, about this tour -- in fact featuring a frontispiece portrait of himself "On the Warpath in [Melbourne] Australia."~"My dear Seymour" is almost certainly James B. Seymour, a conjurer who was a founder of "The Magic Circle," a group dedicated to the combination of prestidigitation and spiritualism -- and who, like Doyle, was a member of the Society for Psychical Research.~The letter is entirely devoted to spiritualism -- in fact Doyle seems to be telling Seymour how to get started. "The Harbinger of Light," begun in 1870, was and is the Australian monthly spiritualism newsletter; Britton, Davis, Moses and Vale were all well-known writers about spiritualism. "Your Russian idea" in the first sentence must have been a suggestion by Seymour, most likely regarding what Doyle referred to in WANDERINGS as "the Russian horror" -- the mass execution of Jews, then much in the news. It is known that Doyle and Seymour, though acquaintances, were not exactly friends; it is further known that by February 1922 (just 15 months later), Seymour broke with Doyle over the issue of spirit photography (Doyle believed in it, Seymour and many others did not). (Our thanks to Alexis Barquin of the ACD Encyclopedia for much of this information on Seymour.)~The letter is in very good condition, with one small smudge in the ink and with a few short tears (and one small gap) at the folds; there is faint evidence that some sort of tape resided there.

"Complex supernatural romance, in which psychic girl's love for 'a complete bounder' leads to projection of his image as an idealized dream- lover, a sort of Doppelganger cum vampiric incubus. Structured as a mystery, true nature of haunting only gradually revealed. Subtle, thought- provoking, intriguing use of dreams; oddly gentle conception of Doppelganger's nature seems to anticipate Jungian animus/anima theory. A superior weird thriller of the period, equal to better known classics such as Kerruish's THE UNDYING MONSTER (1922)." - Robert Knowlton. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 235. Reginald 15634.       Dearborn, MI: Dearborn Publishing Co. 12mo (19.2 cm, 7.6"). 4 vols. I: 235, [1] pp. II: 255, [1] pp. III: 256 pp. IV: 246 pp.. 1920–22 First collected edition of the now-infamous gathering of anti-Semitic articles from the Dearborn Independent, representing the most notable of the Henry Ford-sponsored diatribes against the "Jewish Menace." The four volumes are subtitled "The World's Foremost Problem," "Jewish Activities in the United States," "Jewish Influences in American Life," and "Aspects of Jewish Power in the United States"; among the accusations levelled herein are that the Jews corrupted professional baseball, replaced respectable music with degrading jazz, and destroyed the quality of whisky, in addition to the standard smears regarding finance and politics.

Fine original portrait drawing by Benedikt Dolbin (1883-1971), titled by the artist "Franz Lehar (drawn from life)" and signed by Dolbin just below the portrait

[Vienna]. [ca. 1920]. The composer is depicted in profile, wearing collar and tie. Executed in pen and ink and black chalk on a light yellow background wash. 343 x 250 mm. . "[Lehar] was the leading operetta composer of the 20th century, being primarily responsible for giving the genre renewed vitality. His most successful operetta, Die lustige Witwe, has established a lasting place in the opera as well as the operetta repertory and, along with Offenbach and Johann Strauss II, Lehár has remained one of the most popular composers of light music." Andrew Lamb in Grove online Dolbin (pseud. Fred Pollack, 1883-1971) was born in Vienna and studied there. Trained as an engineer, he subsequently studied musical composition with Arnold Schoenberg and became a member of the Viennese group "Die Bewegung." He commenced drawing portraits of leading artistic personalities from ca. 1917 onwards for Viennese newspapers and journals. Because of his Jewish origins, Dolbin's work was banned in Austria in 1935, at which time he emigrated to the United States.

        Lorenzaccio. Tragödie in fünf Aufzügen.

München, Hoheneichen-Verlag, 1920. - "Halbleinen, 148 Seiten, 8°. (Mit Widmung "S.l. Ludwig Ringler herzlichst - Dietrich Eckart, M. 20. Febr. Adolf Hitler widmete u. a. Eckart sein 1925 erschienenes Buch Mein Kampf, in dem Hitler ihn a
