London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1920. LIMITED FIRST EDITION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ALISTAIR. "This edition is limited to 1,000 copies and cannot be reprinted, as the stones from which the offset plates were printed were in Belgium at the time of the German invasion, and were destroyed." With Alastair's fine illustrations consisting of twelve plates, one as frontispiece, 10 with captioned tissue-guards and the twelfth being the rear endpaper, and with thirteen very large decorated opening initials, all printed in black and turquoise. Ten plates printed in black and turquoise, with descriptive tissue guards, plus two additional plates on the front and rear endpapers. Thirteen large decorative initials (including repeats) printed in black and turquoise. Title printed in black and turquoise. 4to, presented in the publisher's beautiful original binding of white polished buckram lavishly decorated on the upper cover with an all-over pictorial design by Alastair in gilt beneath a turquoise crescent moon, the spine lettered in gilt, t.e.g., others untrimmed. 36pp. A especially fine copy, unusually so,internally pristine and perfect, the brilliant binding exceptionally well preserved and truly bright and clean, especially so for this beautiful book bound in white, which is usually found mellowed down or browned. LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF THE SPHINX WITH THE ILLUSTRATIONS BY ALASTAIR, the pseudonym for German artist Baron Hans Henning von Voigt. 'Alastair's style has been called "decadent Baroque", and has the look of Art Deco influenced hugely by the work of the English artist Aubrey Beardsley, who also illustrated works by Oscar Wilde, and would be echoed in the deliciously unhinged work of Harry Clarke. His career as an artist was launched in 1914, when John Lane published Forty-Three Drawings by Alastair. This much awaited edition of Wilde's THE SPHINX spread his fame even further. Intricate decorative elements and fine detail are apparent in his works. Wilde's poem was the perfect fodder for Alastair's imagination. Jerome Buckley has written “It remains a prime example of many aspects of the English literary Decadence, an extravagant example in both style and subject matter of the ornate become outré, the esoteric entering the forbidden, the luxurious growing lascivious.” In 1922 the artist would once again be inspired by both Wilde and Beardsley for his illustrations to the play SALOME.

        Women In Love

Privately Printed, New York [but London, Martin Secker] 1920 - First edition, UK issue being one of 50 numbered copies signed by the author. Martin Secker bought 50 sets of sheets from the unsigned American edition, and bound them very much in the Secker style, though the publisher's name does not appear anywhere in the book. The regular trade edition did not appear in England for another two years. Roberts A15b Bound in the publisher¿s brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Top edge of pages stained dark green. Housed in a well fitting 1/2 Brown Morocco Clamshell Box with full gilt spine. This book was at some point an ex-library copy in the least intrusive manner, thus few would consider that status much of a demerit. The spine has the faintest trace that there once was a number. On the title page there is in the center faint remains of a library number of which appears to have been partially removed but still showing some signs of its existence; this is quite inconspicuous. And finally cloth repairs have professionally been made to the spine and lower corner of the rear board, that can easily escape one's notice. From the beauty and rarity of this book.         [Photo Album]: Snapshots of African Natives with an Emphasis on Bare-breasted Women

Oblong octavo. String-tied stiff green boards with embossed "Photographs" on front board with blank black pages. The first half of the album has 52 mounted snapshot photographs. All are black and white and are approximately 3.5" x 2.5". Uncaptioned and undated, perhaps circa 1920. All but one of the images seem to be unique snapshots; one image may be commercial. Slight wear, near fine. The photos display scarification, chin and lip piercing. We can not confidently identify the tribe or tribes represented, but some of the images of body modification seem to conform closely to some of the decorative elements of the Karo tribe of Southern Ethiopia. The photographer/compiler, presumably a tourist, seemed most intent on preserving images of bare-breasted native women. .

Le Morte Darthur. The History of King Arthur and of his Noble Knights of the Round Table.

Boston: The Medici Society Inc.,, [1920]. Two volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles gilt to spine and front, top edges gilt. With the illustrated dust jackets. Trivial rubbing to the extremities, but effectively a fine copy in the jackets with very mild tanning to spines and a very few tiny chips to top edges. First US edition of Malory's Arthurian epic with Flint's illustrations, which were first privately printed by Philip Lee Warner, The Medici Society, London, 1910-11, in four volumes printed on handmade Riccardi paper and bound in vellum, and then printed in a trade edition of two volumes by the Medici Society, London, in 1920. This is an exquisite example of the American counterpart. Scarce thus.

        ONE MAN'S INITIATION - 1917

1920. London: George Allen & Unwin, (1920). Original blue cloth stamped in black, with dust jacket. First Edition of Dos Passos's first book -- a novel of soldier life during the Great War. After graduation from Harvard in 1916, he volunteered for an American ambulance corps (along with his college friend e.e. cummings), serving outside of Paris and in northern Italy. (After the war he would remain in Paris, becoming, along with Ernest Hemingway and others, one of the "Lost Generation" of American writers there.) The American edition of this book was not published until 1922, after his anti-war novel THREE SOLDIERS brought him some fame.~This copy is in the second state, with "spread flat" properly printed on page 35. The volume is in fine condition; the jacket too is just about fine, just a bit darkened on its spine.

Catinka Heinfetter. Une cause célèbre sous Louis-Philippe. Récit historique. [ Tapuscrit enrichi de très nombreuses corrections autographes. Récit romancé de l'affaire Caumartin - Sirey ]

1920 - 1 tapuscrit in-4 en 110 feuillets sous chemise, s.d. (circa 1920-1930 ?) Typed Letter Signed, on White House stationery bearing watermark of Presidential seal, from aboard the "U.S.S. Houston," 2 separate 4to pp, Oct. 14, 1935

Franklin D. Roosevelt decides a legal question allowing fish to be distributed in refrigerated meat trucks. "there appears to be nothing which would hinder the fishing industry from utilizing the refrigerator cars belonging to others" Roosevelt writes to U. S. Marshall John J. Murphy (Boston, MA) agreeing to allow the fish companies to transport fish in refrigerated cars belonging to meat packing companies. Murphy sent a 5 1/2 page typed memorandum, included, explaining in great detail the transportation problem faced by the fish industry. Roosevelt agrees to intervene to facilitate this practical solution. Roosevelt begins with a review of the problem Murphy described. "You state that that industry [fish industry] has a limited market because refrigerator cars used for transporting meat to the East are returned empty. You attribute the existence of this situation to the so-called 'Consent Decree' and propose that steps be taken to remove the restrictions in order that the facilities which are now employed for the distribution of meats may be made available to the fishing, fruit and vegetable industries...." Roosevelt reviews the "Consent Decree" explaining that is "was the climax of a suit brought by the Government under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act...against five of the leading packers in 1920," preventing them from using their "facilities in the handling of a large variety of non-meat food products, including fish...." The Government believed that the packers planned to extend their monopolistic practices to other food products. "It was on this account that packers were required to discontinue any dealing in many non-meat lines...." Roosevelt reviews Supreme Court decisions which twice upheld the restriction noting the Court, "refused to permit a modification of the decree...." FDR then reasons that the Decree affects the designated large companies, "there appears to be nothing which would hinder the fishing industry from utilizing the refrigerator cars belonging to others who ship perishable commodities to the East. It is my understanding that there is a heavy movement of empty refrigerator cars westward and these include both those which are owned by carriers and whose which are privately owned. If the 'Consent Decree' were modified...." to allow packers to transport fish, a question would then arise about cost. He advised Murphy to "look into these particular phases of the problem...." Roosevelt concludes with a statement about the importance of transporting food across the country offering to arrange a conference among the various governmental entities involved. He notes the divergent roles played by the Department of Justice and the Interstate Commerce Commission in light of the Supreme Court restrictions against the meat packing industry. Signed in full, "Franklin D. Roosevelt." Very slight chipping at margin folds, some soiling at margins. The USS Houston, from which FDR wrote our detailed letter, was a Northampton-class cruiser of the U.S. Navy, first launched in 1929, but sunk in the Battle of Sunda Strait on March 1, 1942. President Roosevelt cruised aboard the USS Houston a number of times during his tenure as President . At least four journeys are recorded, including this one corresponding with our Oct. 14 letter, from October 2-23, 1935 [see, Day by Day events]. ." On October 14, FDR's "Day by Day" listing notes, "anchored to the eastward of Pedro Gonzales Island" and also notes that he was going fishing with Governor Schley of the Panama Canal. He later traveled with Schley to and through the Gatum locks. The Wikipedia entry for the USS Houston shows a photo of the ship off San Diego in October 1935 "with President Franklin D. Roosevelt on board. She is flying an admiral four-star flag at her foremast peak, and the Presidential flag at her mainmast peak. Roosevelt appointed his correspondent, John J. Murphy, to the position of the U.S. Marshal for the District of Massachusetts in 1935. He served until 1939. Previous to that posting, Murphy was the first Democratic Mayor of Somerville, Mass. (1930-1934) and President of the Boston-based Franklin D. Roosevelt League. Murphy, being from the Boston area, would no doubt have been involved in or certainly aware of the fishing industry in Gloucester during the early 1930s. presented an article on July 15, 2010 citing pieces in the New York Times from April through June of 1933 about the fishing industry. According to the information available, there had been a series of interactions between the President and the depressed fishing community in Gloucester during 1933. There was a shortage of cod and a surplus of mackerel. Fisherman were known to be dumping their catch to protest the low prices being paid for the fish. They wanted subsidies similar to the aid FDR had given farmer. The President met with the fishermen, seemed to be in support of them, but on his next visit to Gloucester, was asked where that aid he promised was. Nothing had been done to alleviate the problems of the fishing industry. FDR's decision to facilitate transportation of fish, as reflected in our letter, was made against this problematic background.
