The Jews' Who's Who. Israelite Finance. Its Sinister Influence

London: The Judaic Publishing Co., 1920 Twelvemo. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in black; yellow endpapers with illustrated front endpaper. Although unattributed, The Jew's Who's Who was written by Henry Hamilton Beamish (1873-1948), founder of the Britons Society and one of England's most obsessed anti-semites, and "is a call to all true Englishmen to rouse themselves and to eradicate the International alien influences which are swiftly and surely crushing the very life-blood out of this great Empire of ours." The book was initially published under Beamish's Judaic Publishing Co. imprint, which he would rename The Britons Publishing Co. in 1922. The majority of the book is a detailed compendium of Jewish-owned financial interests and net worth, but also includes a timeline of "The Jew Conquest of England," a list of Jews who Anglicized their names, many semitic and anti-semitic quotes, and calls for Britains to join the Britons Society. Beamish would later become vice president of Arnold Leese's Imperial Fascist League leaving him a sizable bequest that would help underwrite British anti-semitism for years following his death in Rhodesia in 1948. An important, if scurrilous, anti-semitic publication rarely seen in commerce. Less than two dozen copies of two editions found institutionally via OCLC. A Very Good+ copy, which would be Near Fine excepting a crude repair to the rear endpaper. (Thurlow, 65-69)

The Green-Eyed Monster (Original one sheet poster for the 1919 silent film)

Jacksonville, FL: Norman Film Studios, 1920. Original US one sheet poster for the now-lost 1920 silent film. The first film to be made with an all-black cast by Norman Pictures, which came to specialize in cinema starring all-black casts and distributed to African-American movie houses. From the Norman Film archive, thus rolled rather than folded, with a letter of provenance attesting to same. Motivated by the success of Oscar Micheaux, the father of African-American cinema, Norman debuted the first of what would be many all-black films with "The Green Eyed Monster." The film was not initially a success, due to a dim response to its comedic elements. Norman edited the film and re-shot portions of it to make it a straight drama, and its 1920 re-release was a huge success. The edited portions actually became part of a slapstick romantic comedy, "The Love Bug." The film's story centers on a passionate love triangle intercut with a vicious rivalry competition between two train companies to land a high-dollar mail contract. As with this poster, Norman went to great lengths to advertise the expense of the film's action sequences, including a rescue from burning car, fist fights, a pistol duel, an abduction, a locomotive chase, and a violent train wreck that purportedly cost $80,000. 28 x 42 inches (71 x 107 cm). Rolled, Very Good to Near Fine.

        This Side of Paradise.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1920. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine and blind to front board. Housed in a custom orange solander box. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. A little wear to tips and spine, front hinge repaired, some spots and marks to content. First edition, second printing (same month as the first). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Peggy Boyd, from F. Scott Fitzgerald, with many thanks for her work for 'The Little Friends of Jugo-Slovakian Children' ? this humble prize for the Most Tickets Sold For The Bazzaar [sic]. Bravo! Bravo! Keep up your kind acts and Our Celestial Backer will never let you be sorry." At the head of the page, Fitzgerald has added "Read the article on 'Professional Youth' in the last Sat. Eve. Post. I shall revenge myself on the lady." The lady in question was Fitzgerald's friend Dorothy Parker, who had written the article making fun of Fitzgerald's shameless self-promotion. Parker's article was published on 28 April 1923, which dates the inscription fairly precisely. Fitzgerald's inscriptions are written above and below the original ownership inscription of Margaret Woodward Smith. Fitzgerald has added quotation marks around "Woodward" (Peggy published some works as Woodward Boyd). Peggy presumably bought the book on publication in April 1920 in Chicago ? the book has the ticket of Carrolls Booksellers, The Plaza, Chicago on the front pastedown. An original photo of Fitzgerald is tipped-in below. Margaret ("Peggy") Woodward Smith (1898?1965) was already established as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News when she met her first husband, the journalist and novelist Thomas Alexander Boyd (1898?1935). They moved to Minneapolis and married in October 1921. The Fitzgeralds had moved to St. Paul in summer 1921 and Tom made it his business to meet Scott as soon as he could. Tom promoted Fitzgerald's work through his column and Fitzgerald in turn assisted the Boyds with their ambitions of becoming published authors. He encouraged Tom to publish Through the Wheat (1923), with advice on revising the manuscript, and persuading Scribner's to publish it after they initially turned it down. Similarly, he was full of praise for Peggy's manuscript for The Love Legend (1922), offering suggestions for revising the novel and writing a fulsome review in the New York Post when it was published. Peggy later published books as Peggy Shane, after her second marriage to the humorist and crossword-puzzle creator Ted Shane.

Survey of Cripples in New York City

Carbon copy of typed manuscript 1920 - Carbon copy of a significant work in the history of medicine and sociology. 11 x 8.5" , 141 (thin, onion-skin-type) leaves. Bound with brass punches/clasps, and bound in a heavier brown paper. The exterior binding (with a hand-made/typed title) has some significant chips, and the spine covering is nearly gone. That said, the interior is at least Very Good. From the Library of Congress, with their surplus/duplicate stamp on the back of the front cover, and with no other markins except the pencil noe regarding the source of the document, which was from Douglas C. McMurtrie, who was on the 14-person committee (and who was a famous graphic design/typographer). This copy and the published version present the same exact contents. **"This survey was inaugurated by the representatives of 41 organizations, associations, and hospitals in Greater New York engaged in work for cripples, at a conference on April 4, 1919, which was the result of the efforts of the New York Committee on After Care of Infantile Paralysis Cases. The expenses were met by contributions from certain of these agencies and a liberal gift from the Rockefeller Foundation. The responsibility for the after care of the survivors of the 1916 Infantile Paralysis epidemic in New York City has since that time been vested in the above named Committee, representing all the agencies interested in these children. This Committee had provided a system of follow-up, including necessary financing, transportation, home care, etc., which proved so beneficial in its results on the thousands of cases recorded that the committee early in 1919 resolved to learn whether all the city's needy cripples were being cared for, and if not, to what extent the need was unmet."--description from Forgotten Books website [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Photographic archive from NYC City Hospital/Welfare Island, c. 1920, showing adult and child patients and staff: a brilliance of spirit amidst difficult surroundings

New York, 1920. Paper . Very good +. The story of City Hospitals land is ominous, now laying in ruins to the East of Manhattan and highlighted by some as an architecturally distinct ghost tour. Approximated by completed construction, dress of subjects and presence of Queensboro bridge, the photos post-date 1909. Possibly the first time many of the residents were the subject of photography, or the first photographic documentation of the island on site. Through the 19th century, then known as Blackwells island, the island housed several hospitals and a prison, built from the stone underfoot. Buildings included the New York City Lunatic Asylum, The Smallpox Hospital, later the gothic lighthouse built again by convict labor, the last prisoners leaving the island by 1935 when Rykers is erected. During the outbreak of smallpox, the island became known as Pest Island, when nurses and workers were scarce the prison population contributed to the operations of the site. Termed Welfare Island in 1921, where the poorest in need of medical care were cast, still reachable only by aquatic means. Nelly Bly went undercover as a patient in the Women's Lunatic Asylum and reported what happened in the book Ten Days in a Madhouse (1887) Charles Dickens described conditions at the Octagon, the asylum then located on the northern portion of the island, in his American Notes (1842) William Wallace Sanger oversaw police interviews of 2000 prostitutes at Blackwell's Island and wrote up the findings in The History of Prostitution (1858) Mae West, Emma Goldman and Billie Holiday served, albeit small, time on the island.

THE TRAIL DRIVERS OF TEXAS, INTERESTING SKETCHES OF EARLY COWBOYS AND THEIR EXPERIENCES ON THE RANGE AND ON THE TRAIL DURING THE DAYS THAT TRIED MEN'S SOULS. TRUE NARRATIVES RELATED BY REAL COW-PUNCHERS AND MEN WHO FATHERED THE CATTLE INDUSTRY IN TEXAS

Jackson Printing Co., 1920 & 1923., San Antonio - First editions. 2 volumes. Pictorial cloth, 498pp., & 496pp., frontis, portraits, advertisement. Both volumes were "published under the direction of George W. Saunders, President of the Old Trail Drivers Association. These original 2 volumes were very crudely printed and bound, making it very difficult to find copies that aren't loose and heavily worn. The first volume was exhausted before the second volume appeared; therefore it was reprinted in 1924 with some revisions and additions in an edition of 500 copies with a "second edition" imprint. In spite of the crudeness of the two volumes, they are perhaps the most important single contribution to the history of cattle driving on the Western trails."--Ramon Adams. In SIX-GUNS.Ramon Adams refers to the original edition as "rare" and the 1924 "second edition" as scarce. "This compilation is the essential starting point for any study of Texas trail driving days."--John Jenkins. "Absolutely the best source there is on the cattle trail"--Walter Prescott Webb. "This vast complication of original accounts by old trail drivers is one of the best cattle books, and the largest collection of first hand narratives of the range cattle industry."--Bill Reese. A rare and important work. The first volume has the errata slip affixed to the front pastedown sheet, else a very good, tight copy. Volume II is also a very good, tight copy. A desirable set, especially in this condition. HOWES H816. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 99. GRAFF 2020. HERD 1103. SIX GUNS 1084. SIX SCORE 61. 44/44 21. CAMPBELL 49. RADER 1988. MERRILL ARISTOCRAT.
