Manuscript Diary of Opera Singer and Voice Teacher, Queena Marion Tillotson, a.k.a "Queena Mario," dated 1949

Soft cover. Good. 12mo, 167 manuscript pages, written in pencil in a legible hand, bound in contemporary blue suede leather binding, spine tips chipped, covers and corners rubbed and slightly scuffed, inside hinges open, otherwise in good, clean and legible condition. A noted soprano of the 1920's and 1930's, and later a respected voice teacher, Queena Marion Tillotson was born on August 21, 1896 at Akron, Ohio. She was raised in New Jersey and studied with Polish soprano Marcella Sembrich prior to bowing with the San Carlo Opera Company in 1918. In the early 1920s she sang with baritone Antonio Scotti's touring Antonio Scotti Opera Company before making her debut with the Metropolitan Opera on November 30, 1922. Over her 345 performances at the venerable house her roles included Nedda in Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci", Gilda from Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto", Mimi in Puccini's "La Boheme", Sophie in Richard Strauss "Der Rosenvavalier", Micaela in Georges Bizet's "Carmen", and others. Queena was Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel" for the 1931 first-ever Saturday Metropolitan radio broadcast; on the West Coast she first appeared at San Francisco in 1923 as Mimi and in 1930 was the Child for the American premiere of Maurice Ravel's "L'Enfant et les Sortileges". After singing her final Metropolitan performance on December 26, 1938, she was a professor at New York's Juilliard School and Philadelphia's Curtis Institute while also earning praise under her real name as the author of opera-themed murder mysteries and, as 'Florence Bryant', of a newspaper column. A portion of her recorded legacy remains available. She married Wilfred Pelletier (1896-1982), a well-known conductor in 1925. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1936. Pelletier then married Queena's student, Rose Bampton (1907-2007) in 1937. Tillotson died on 28 May 1951 at New York City and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery at Brooklyn, New York. The diary entries relate the events of a European trip taken by Tillotson in the summer of 1949. The diary mentions a number of famous people she spent time with while in Europe, one being the actor Gene Lockhart, June Lockhart's father and a number of well-known opera singers, including Giacomo Lauri Volpi (1892-1979). The diary includes a tipped in letter (1 page) from Volpi, written to Queena. While not dated, it was written to her and sent to her hotel on June 18th, 1949. Giovanni Martinelli (1885-1969) is another friend who she spends time with while in Italy. Martinelli was a celebrated Italian operatic tenor and enjoyed a long career at the Metropolitan Opera, and Tito Ruffo. The larger portion of her trip is in Italy, but the diary begins in Marseille (France) on June 11th. She spends much of her time in Italy, touring various cities, in particular Rome, Florence, and Venice. She also visited Naples, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Siena and other places. One of the more interesting entries is when she visits the Vatican and has an audience with the Pope, described in great detail. While in Europe she attends many operatic and theatre performances, usually dining and having drinks with the vocalists, whom she knows. She also mentions the after effects of WWII upon the cities and towns she visits. Her trip ends September 11th with one short paragraph about her travels home.

>> BEL EXEMPLAIRE [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Arabian Nights 16 Volume Set: A Plain and Literal Translation of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments, Now Entituled The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night, with the Supplementary Nights

The Burton Ethnological Society / Burton Club, 1920. Near Fine/No Jacket. Complete in 16 volumes (10 + 6 supplements). A reissue of the scarce 1885 Kamashastra Society edition (which generally sells for $4000 - 8000), following the same cover design. Black cloth, gilt & silver titles and decorations. Top edge of ten main volumes gilt, supplements top-stained red. Burton's translation of The Arabian Nights remains the authoritative version of this extensive collection of stories, and also stands as a unique example of liberality in publishing during the Victorian era. Despite the salacious content of many of the narratives, the first printed English version remained true to Burton's precise and inclusive translation. Burton was somewhat of a trailblazer in this regard, also publishing an authoritative version of the now-famous Kama Sutra. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS: VOLUME 1: Introduction by Sir Richard F.         "To Hold as 'Twere"

Dundalk: Tempest Dundagan Press, 1920. Wraps. Good. 4to. 26 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated, 20 leaves, with 17 being caricature plates, plus title with vignettes. Grace Plunkett, nee Gifford, was a well-known artist and caricaturist who married Joseph Plunkett, martyr of the Easter 1916 Uprising, hours before his execution. This 1920 collection includes a good number of caricatures of the Irish rebels and other notables, including de Valera, Lady Gregory, John MacCormick, Countess Markievicz, etc. The caricatures are sharp and merciless, and Plunkett was a rarity as a woman in the field of caricature at the time. Her sympathies were strongly for Sinn Fein and Irish independence, needless to say. The collection is uncommon in commerce. Heavy soiling of the cover. Moderate wear besides.

        Canadian Victoria Cross Recipients [Pre-1920]

8 August, 1920, 1920. Blank-page autograph book. 11.5 cm x 9 cm, black fabricoid binding with the word "Autographs" gilt-stamped to cover, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Written on front free endpaper: "Canadian Victoria Cross [Winners?]. Canadian National Exhibition. Toronto. 28/8/1920." The Victoria Cross is the highest honour in the Canadian honour system, for gallantry in the face of the enemy, that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. It even takes precedence over the Order of Canada. The Canadian National Exhibition celebrated Canada's wartime achievement bringing together 26 winners of the Victoria Cross and their families. Some name their regiment, home town, and rank.         ?yd tautin s autonomijos Lietuvoje: I?leista ?yd Tautos Tarybos (Jewish national autonomy in Lithuania: Publication of the Jewish National Council)

Kaunas: S. Neumano (S. Neumann), 1920. First edition. Paperback. g+. Octavo. 31, [1]pp. Original printed wrappers. Stamp of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on title page. Published by the Jewish National Council of Lithuania, this scarce work compiles materials relating to the Lithuanian Jewish autonomy granted in 1920 by the Ministry for Jewish Affairs of the Lithuanian government. Lithuanian Jews took active part in the Lithuanian Wars of Independence, also known as the Freedom Struggles, referring to the three wars that Lithuania fought to defend its independence at the end of World War I: with Bolshevik forces (December 1918 - August 1919), the Bermontians* (June - December 1919), and Poland (August - November 1920). Altogether more than 3000 Jews served in the Lithuanian army between 1918 and 1920. As a result, the Jewish community was given a wide amount of autonomy in education and taxation through community councils, or kehillot. Unfortunately, by 1934, in a nationalist trend that reflected throughout Europe, the government scaled back much of this autonomy, and cases of anti-semitism increased. Wrappers sunned and partly chipped along back cover. Text in Lithuanian. Wrappers in overall fair, interior in good+ to very good condition. * The Bermontians (or the West Russian Volunteer Army) was an army in the Baltic provinces of the former Russian Empire during the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920.

James E. W. Plum Rabeuschen oder der große Meister. Einunerhörter Detektivroman in dreizehn Kapiteln von Wehus Lächumschumpferhizling königlicher Hof-Zauberer zu Mythikon /Kabeuschen

Erich Matthes, Leipzig 1920 - 105 Seiten.
