Contains 51 sepia toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2.25" x 3.5" and 5.5" x 3.5" with some captions. Very good photo album with spotting and some edgewear with near fine photographs with occasional creasing.A photo album kept by a Washington State family during the 1920s. There are two photos of girls graduating with diplomas in hand and numerous photos of women posing in costumes and dresses. Another group of photos show time spent at a winter cabin with snowshoes, ice fishing, and outdoor cooking. The ice fishing photos shows people posing with their catch as well as cleaning and beheading the fish with an ax. Photos of the houses show the backyard with bear carcasses hung from a tree presumably during a process of preserving the skins. An interesting collection of family photos showing daily life in Washington State in the 1920s. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Passepartoutartig montiert. Moderner bordeauxroter Maroquinband (signiert und datiert: H. Fikentscher, Leipzig 1920) mit Goldfileten und Titel "A. Dürer - Das Marienleben - Holzschnitte" auf dem Vorderdeckel in Goldprägung. In marmoriertem Pappschuber mit lederverstärkten Kanten. Nürnberg, [Hieronmyus Höltzel] per Albertum Durer pictorem. Anno christiano Millesimo quingentesimo undecimo (1511).

1920. Commercial full-leather ledger, manufactured by Wm. H. Hoskins, "Blank Book Makers", 904 and 906 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. Metal clasp. Blue marbled paper eps. Binding well worn, with joints starting. Lacking bottom half of clasp. 1st 9 leaves excised. Many names overlaid with large check mark. Good only.. 151 ll of printed/lined ledger pages, numbered identically on facing pages. Printed column headings to leaf verso: Date / Player / From Club / Agreement / Class / Cost / Exchange / Remarks. Printed column headings to leaf recto: Date / Player / To Club / Agreement / Price / Exchange / Remarks. Folio. 14-1/4" x 15-1/4" An interesting, quite possibly unique, surviving artifact [we deduce to be] from the Philadelphia Athletics, recording player transactions from the early 1920s. From the 1921 Philadelphia Athletics roster [source: baseball-almanac dot com] of 36 players, we find over 20 individuals documented herein. For example, Walter "Lefty" Wolf played just one year, 1921, appearing in only 8 games with the Athletics, and on p. 13r we find him listed as a "Independent. Free Agent. For signing." Another example, Ralph "Cy" Perkins was a catcher for the team [1917 - 30], who appears on p. 21l. Frank Brazill, p. 14L, played for the Athletics in 1921 & 1922, where the remarks read: "To Atlanta - Agreement Apr 10/20" above which is inked, "Returned". Overall, over 175 names are listed [a few twice... different seasons?], with many having explanatory remarks such as source, contract costs, trades, etc. A wonderful primary informational source for the early 20th C. baseball historian.

Handwritten manuscript for the "Back Porch" skit

New York: Hotel Astor, 1920. Handwritten Final Draft manuscript for the 1920s "Back Porch" vaudeville skit, seen here under the early working titles "Sleeping Porch" and "Porch Scene." Executed in holograph ink by W.C. Fields on Hotel Astor letterhead stationery. Also included is a typescript draft of the same work, with a few substantive edits in holograph pencil by Fields. A manuscript of titanic importance, showing the very link between W.C. Fields' many talents, which began with a long and successful career in vaudeville, then as an actor and screenwriter. Evidenced here in every dimension is the extreme attention to detail Fields gave his work. The hilarious-though-frustrating account of Fliverton, a disgruntled man who, despite his efforts, can't seem to escape the noise of his bustling neighborhood and take a nap on his sleeping porch. Interruptions include a crying baby, a newsboy, a faulty hammock, and his nagging wife. Fields began his career in vaudeville as a silent juggler, eventually earning the distinction of "world's greatest juggler" and an illustrious career in both silent and early "talkie" films. Variations of the famed "Back Porch" skit appeared in at least two Fields productions, including "It's the Old Army Game" (1926) and again in "It's a Gift" (1934). Manuscript 15 pages on hotel stationery, 9.5 x 6 inches, 4 pages not on stationery, 5.25 x 6.5 inches. Typescript 8.5 x 11 inches, with holograph pencil notations. Fine condition.

        [Photo Album]: English Countryside

England. [Circa 1920]. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black pebbled leather over paper boards. Contains 62 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 4" x 6" and 8" x 10", without captions. Near fine photo album with near fine photographs. A collection of amateur photography taken of the English countryside with the people in what appears to be clothing from the 1920s and visible billboard that places them in the East Sussex area of the country. The photographer used soft focus and matte paper reminiscent of the style of early 20th Century photographers such as Edward Steichen and Dorthea Lange. The photos concentrate on the landscape of the British country, with photos of old homes covered in ivy, romantic walkways, and stone bridges. The coast and small waterways are seen here as well as photos of creeks making their way through rock faces, and waves crashing on a rocky beach. A few of the images have human subjects, some posed, such as one of a girl in a bathing costume and swim cap on a rock, while others are candids of people working on a dock or walking down a road. The stonework of old churches is captured here as well as farm animals roaming in fields.A pleasing and artistic collection of images showing the natural beauty of the British country and the skills of an amateur photographer. .

Faint mark and small nick to fore edge of front free endpaper, some minor rubbing to extremities, front hinge repaired, rear hinge tender. A very good copy. First edition, third printing. Inscribed by Fitzgerald, "Sincerely, Scott Fitzgerald", on the tipped-in leaf entitled "Author's Apology". The third printing, issued the same month as the first, included an unknown number of copies prepared with this tipped-in page printed on glossy paper, each signed by Fitzgerald; Bruccoli notes there were "probably 500 copies". Prepared for a meeting of the American Booksellers Association, the printed apology reads in part: "My whole theory of writing I can sum up in one sentence: An author ought to write for the youth of his own generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward? So, gentlemen, consider all the cocktails mentioned in this book drunk by me as a toast to the American Booksellers Association.

        THE AGE OF INNOCENCE

1920. New York | London: D. Appleton and Company, 1920. Original deep red cloth lettered in black. First Edition, first printing, of Edith Wharton's best-known book -- the tale of a love triangle bound by the conventions of New York society -- between Newland Archer, his fiancée and then wife May Welland, and her cousin Ellen Olenska (newly separated from a Polish count).~Edith Wharton's evocation of the New York of her girlhood, with its rigid conventions and adherence to form, is brilliantly drawn and it is here that she comes closest to the work of her friend Henry James. The narrative is clear and the prose impeccable. The characters are acutely observed and, while the author's sympathies are inevitably on the side of Ellen, she succeeds in being objective about May, who for all her limitations is a sympathetic character. [CGEL]~In 1921 THE AGE OF INNOCENCE won the Pulitzer Prize for Novels (the first won by a woman), in 1928 it was dramatized by Margaret Ayer Barnes, and in 1993 it was placed on the silver screen by Martin Scorcese with considerable success (starring Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer).~This copy is from the first printing (with a "(1)" at the end of the text, and with the many original text points enumerated by Garrison, which were altered in subsequent 1920 printings). Its condition is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine (very minor rubbing at the extremities, slight darkening of the cloth, one tiny mark on the spine); the spine ends remain intact --unusual, as a very delicate cloth was unfortunately used for this binding. With all of its popularity in recent decades, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE has become a rather scarce title. Garrison A30.I.a; one of the Modern Library "100 Best Novels in the English Language since 1900."

The Jews' Who's Who. Israelite Finance. Its Sinister Influence

London: The Judaic Publishing Co., 1920 Twelvemo. Publisher's red cloth, stamped in black; yellow endpapers with illustrated front endpaper. Although unattributed, The Jew's Who's Who was written by Henry Hamilton Beamish (1873-1948), founder of the Britons Society and one of England's most obsessed anti-semites, and "is a call to all true Englishmen to rouse themselves and to eradicate the International alien influences which are swiftly and surely crushing the very life-blood out of this great Empire of ours." The book was initially published under Beamish's Judaic Publishing Co. imprint, which he would rename The Britons Publishing Co. in 1922. The majority of the book is a detailed compendium of Jewish-owned financial interests and net worth, but also includes a timeline of "The Jew Conquest of England," a list of Jews who Anglicized their names, many semitic and anti-semitic quotes, and calls for Britains to join the Britons Society. Beamish would later become vice president of Arnold Leese's Imperial Fascist League leaving him a sizable bequest that would help underwrite British anti-semitism for years following his death in Rhodesia in 1948. An important, if scurrilous, anti-semitic publication rarely seen in commerce. Less than two dozen copies of two editions found institutionally via OCLC. A Very Good+ copy, which would be Near Fine excepting a crude repair to the rear endpaper. (Thurlow, 65-69)

The Green-Eyed Monster (Original one sheet poster for the 1919 silent film)

Jacksonville, FL: Norman Film Studios, 1920. Original US one sheet poster for the now-lost 1920 silent film. The first film to be made with an all-black cast by Norman Pictures, which came to specialize in cinema starring all-black casts and distributed to African-American movie houses. From the Norman Film archive, thus rolled rather than folded, with a letter of provenance attesting to same. Motivated by the success of Oscar Micheaux, the father of African-American cinema, Norman debuted the first of what would be many all-black films with "The Green Eyed Monster." The film was not initially a success, due to a dim response to its comedic elements. Norman edited the film and re-shot portions of it to make it a straight drama, and its 1920 re-release was a huge success. The edited portions actually became part of a slapstick romantic comedy, "The Love Bug." The film's story centers on a passionate love triangle intercut with a vicious rivalry competition between two train companies to land a high-dollar mail contract. As with this poster, Norman went to great lengths to advertise the expense of the film's action sequences, including a rescue from burning car, fist fights, a pistol duel, an abduction, a locomotive chase, and a violent train wreck that purportedly cost $80,000. 28 x 42 inches (71 x 107 cm). Rolled, Very Good to Near Fine.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1920. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine and blind to front board. Housed in a custom orange solander box. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. A little wear to tips and spine, front hinge repaired, some spots and marks to content. First edition, second printing (same month as the first). Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Peggy Boyd, from F. Scott Fitzgerald, with many thanks for her work for 'The Little Friends of Jugo-Slovakian Children' ? this humble prize for the Most Tickets Sold For The Bazzaar [sic]. Bravo! Bravo! Keep up your kind acts and Our Celestial Backer will never let you be sorry." At the head of the page, Fitzgerald has added "Read the article on 'Professional Youth' in the last Sat. Eve. Post. I shall revenge myself on the lady." The lady in question was Fitzgerald's friend Dorothy Parker, who had written the article making fun of Fitzgerald's shameless self-promotion. Parker's article was published on 28 April 1923, which dates the inscription fairly precisely. Fitzgerald's inscriptions are written above and below the original ownership inscription of Margaret Woodward Smith. Fitzgerald has added quotation marks around "Woodward" (Peggy published some works as Woodward Boyd). Peggy presumably bought the book on publication in April 1920 in Chicago ? the book has the ticket of Carrolls Booksellers, The Plaza, Chicago on the front pastedown. An original photo of Fitzgerald is tipped-in below. Margaret ("Peggy") Woodward Smith (1898?1965) was already established as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News when she met her first husband, the journalist and novelist Thomas Alexander Boyd (1898?1935). They moved to Minneapolis and married in October 1921. The Fitzgeralds had moved to St. Paul in summer 1921 and Tom made it his business to meet Scott as soon as he could. Tom promoted Fitzgerald's work through his column and Fitzgerald in turn assisted the Boyds with their ambitions of becoming published authors. He encouraged Tom to publish Through the Wheat (1923), with advice on revising the manuscript, and persuading Scribner's to publish it after they initially turned it down. Similarly, he was full of praise for Peggy's manuscript for The Love Legend (1922), offering suggestions for revising the novel and writing a fulsome review in the New York Post when it was published. Peggy later published books as Peggy Shane, after her second marriage to the humorist and crossword-puzzle creator Ted Shane.
