Jackson Printing Co., 1920 & 1923., San Antonio - First editions. 2 volumes. Pictorial cloth, 498pp., & 496pp., frontis, portraits, advertisement. Both volumes were "published under the direction of George W. Saunders, President of the Old Trail Drivers Association. These original 2 volumes were very crudely printed and bound, making it very difficult to find copies that aren't loose and heavily worn. The first volume was exhausted before the second volume appeared; therefore it was reprinted in 1924 with some revisions and additions in an edition of 500 copies with a "second edition" imprint. In spite of the crudeness of the two volumes, they are perhaps the most important single contribution to the history of cattle driving on the Western trails."--Ramon Adams. In SIX-GUNS.Ramon Adams refers to the original edition as "rare" and the 1924 "second edition" as scarce. "This compilation is the essential starting point for any study of Texas trail driving days."--John Jenkins. "Absolutely the best source there is on the cattle trail"--Walter Prescott Webb. "This vast complication of original accounts by old trail drivers is one of the best cattle books, and the largest collection of first hand narratives of the range cattle industry."--Bill Reese. A rare and important work. The first volume has the errata slip affixed to the front pastedown sheet, else a very good, tight copy. Volume II is also a very good, tight copy. A desirable set, especially in this condition. HOWES H816. BASIC TEXAS BOOKS 99. GRAFF 2020. HERD 1103. SIX GUNS 1084. SIX SCORE 61. 44/44 21. CAMPBELL 49. RADER 1988. MERRILL ARISTOCRAT.         The Green-Eyed Monster (Original six sheet poster for the 1919 silent film)

Jacksonville, FL: Norman Film Studios, 1920. Original US six sheet illustrated poster for the now-lost 1920 silent film. The first film to be made with an all-black cast by Norman Pictures, which came to specialize in cinema starring all-black casts and distributed to African-American movie houses. A stunning illustrated poster, evoking the violence and grandeur of a famous (and purportedly expensive) scene from the film involving a train wreck, as well the film's African American content. 81 x 81 inches (71 x 107 cm). Near Fine, with minor restoration at the folds. Archivally linen backed and rolled. Very Good, complete and bright, but with a few closed tears.

The Australian Victories in France in 1918

London: Hutchinson & Co.,, 1920. Second edition. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettered spine. Portrait frontispiece, 30 plates from photographs, 9 coloured folding maps. From the library of Admiral of the Fleet John Rushworth Jellicoe, first Earl Jellicoe (1859-1935), commander of the Grand Fleet at Jutland (31 May - 1 June 1916). A very good copy. Presentation copy of the second edition, the same year as the first, inscribed by the author "To the Viscount Jellicoe, from the Author, John Monash Lieut-General, Dec. 1924" on the front free endpaper. A remarkable association copy, linking two of the leading commanders of the Great War: Sir John Monash (1865-1931) and Viscount Jellicoe (1859-1935). Monash was appointed by Haig to lead the 1st Anzac Corps in 1918; his skilful handling of his troops and inspired tactical thinking contributed greatly to the Allied breakthrough in the final year of the war. Liddell Hart described him as having "probably... the greatest capacity for command in modern war among all who held command [in the BEF]". Jellicoe, of course, presided over the strategic British victory at Jutland in May-June 1916.

[Photo Album]: Snapshots of African Natives with an Emphasis on Bare-breasted Women

Oblong octavo. String-tied stiff green boards with embossed "Photographs" on front board with blank black pages. The first half of the album has 52 mounted snapshot photographs. All are black and white and are approximately 3.5" x 2.5". Uncaptioned and undated, perhaps circa 1920. All but one of the images seem to be unique snapshots; one image may be commercial. Slight wear, near fine. The photos display scarification, chin and lip piercing. We can not confidently identify the tribe or tribes represented, but some of the images of body modification seem to conform closely to some of the decorative elements of the Karo tribe of Southern Ethiopia. The photographer/compiler, presumably a tourist, seemed most intent on preserving images of bare-breasted native women. .

Livres

An original watercolour painting of a deer and forest animals.

An original finely detailed, and painstakingly executed, watercolour of a young deer surrounded by forest animals, painted on artist's board within a circular grey painted border and signed, characteristically, with the initials "EJD" and the date of 1920, presented within a cream acid-free mount with circular window; preserved in lovely condition with only a couple of tiny, and barely noticeable, fox marks to the background and another very small (7mm) watercolour splash to the foliage.. A beautiful, lovingly-worked, and harmonious painting demonstrating the exquisite skill of this watercolour artist.
