[Portland, OR], (n. d.). Circa 1920. Maroon leather 3-ring binder. Outline remnants of airplane and other shape to front board [Dudrey Aircraft Co logo?]. Wear, scuffing, and faint spotting to binder, some corrosion to metal backstrip. Light bleedthrough to few pages of manuscript text; some edgewear to promotional and laid in material; occasional light soil; first leaf detached at two of the three binding holes. Generally clean and highly readable throughout. About VG.. 83 leaves, many with text and/or clippings to recto only; some blanks; additional aeronautic promotional material bound or laid in. Most pages ruled. Occasional hand-drawn diagrams, b/w photographic reproductions in instructional clippings. 10" x 6-3/4" Cyril Krugner's manuscript instructional notebook presumably for Dudrey Aircraft Company's aeronautic school, covering aeronautical repair, various engines, standardization, meteorology, a brief history of aviation, algorithms, and much more. Krugner is most well-known for having been the mechanic on Russell Merrill's flight to Ketchikan with Roy Davis in 1925, only the second such flight from the continental US to Alaska. Although the notebook begins with a Foreword followed by Krugner's signature, address, and "Dudrey Aircraft Co.," we speculate that Krugner was a student at the school, perhaps copying material from a shared class book or other source, rather than an instructor or employee there. Krugner was listed as an employee of Willamette Iron and Steel Works in the 1918 Portland city directory, and as an ironworker in later directories until 1923, when he moved from the address listed in this notebook; the sporadic and inconsistent pagination also suggests that much of this material is derived from other sources, with perhaps the mathematics and some of the diagrams being Krugner's. Dudrey Aircraft Company was one of the earliest to take advantage of the boom in aviation in Portland by offering courses at Broomfield Flying Field in both aeronautical mechanics and piloting; they also proudly advertised the fact that their student body included both the first woman and the first Chinese man to attend any of the aviation schools in the city. In 1920, Dudrey offered free courses as part of federal vocational training, and it seems likely that Krugner took advantage of this opportunity or a similar one while working at Willamette's. He later worked as a draftsman or mechanic at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, Varney Air Lines (which would later merge with three other companies to become United Air Lines), and the Bonneville Project. In addition to the manuscript material, which includes technical specifications for the Hall-Scott L-6, Rolls Royce Aero and Hispano-Suiza engines, Krugner compiled and bound in promotional trade catalogs and other material for the Curtiss K-12, OX-5, and K-6, and pasted in material on the Zeppelin-Staaken Monoplone. A price list for Weaver rifles is laid in, as is an oil-stained packing slip from Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corp, dated March 26, 1918, on the back of which is a penciled drawing diagramming the interrelationship of gas pumps and piping. Overall, a fascinating example of early aviation instruction, compiled by a young draftsman and mechanic at the start of his career.

[FUTURIST LANGUAGE] Grammatika yazyka chelovechestva AO, perevod s AO [i.e. Grammar of the Language of the Mankind. Translated from AO]

Chelovechestvo [i.e. Mankind]: Moscow, 1920. [2], 20 pp. 16x13 cm. In contemporary wrappers. Tears and soiling of the wrappers. Otherwise very good. In 1915 Velimir Khlebnikov founded 'Soyuz 317' (i.e. The Unity of 317 or The Society of the Chairmen of the Globe), and soon it was joined by the members of artistic avant-garde elite like Prokofiev or Rabindranath Tagore. Khlebnikov's proclamations of that time transmitted ideas of universal brotherhood and the unity of people of culture who are destined to rule the universe. This brochure was created by Gordin brothers who were influenced by Khelbnikov's ideas (hence the pseudonym of the author of the text - Beobi which was taken from Khlebnikov's poem). The Gordin brothers took futuristic ideas on the new anarchic level. Brothers Aba (1887-1964) and Volf Gordin were theoreticians of anarchism, followers of Kropotkin and Bakunin. Aba was the founder of a new movement - individualist anarchism (or universalist anarchism). They've created their own organization and called themselves «panarchists». In 1917-1920 they published several brochures on panarchism. In 1920 Volf created language of international communication and named it AO. On the first page of this grammar book it's stated: «There is no god, no nature. Talk like humans, use 'AO'». In the brochure they give alphabet, pronunciation rules, parts of speech, abbreviations etc. There were only eleven sounds in the language, five vowels and six consonants. In writing sounds were depicted by numbers. Gordin stressed that his language is universal, and universality excludes any existing alphabets. In 1924 writing of the language was reformed, and AO-2 was presented at the First International exhibition of interplanetary machines and mechanisms in 1927 as the language of cosmic communication. This brochure isn't recorded anywhere. Possibly one of the few copies produced.

Russell, Gollings, and de Young." Here the emphasis is on recreational possibilities for the Caucasian tourist, including golf, swimming, tennis, fishing. In front of the title cartouche at lower right is pictured a group of Native American Indians (being filmed by a Caucasian tourist) with the artist at work on his canvas. In the latter book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's haunting of him was justified. The Dublin Independent was particularly warm in welcoming the collection, remarking: 'We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarised us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming." (Hamilton, p. 128)."Rackham's two great books of the twenties were James Stephens' Irish Fairy Tales of 1920 and Shakespeare's Tempest of 1926... Beyond the softness of style and inventiveness, the most striking thing about the colour plates for Irish Fairy Tales is the felicitous and appropriate use of celtic borders" (Gettings, p. 143).Latimore and Haskell, p. 52. In 1938 he won the Prix Paul-Guillaume for the portrait of mime Farina. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

Paris: Librairie Hachette, [1920]. French Limited Edition DeLuxe. One of 400 copies signed by Arthur Rackham (of which this is #124).Large quarto (11 5/16 x 8 13/16 inches; 288 x 223 mm.). 98, [2, blank] pp. With an additional color silhouette drawing not found in the trade edition. Color frontispiece mounted on white paper with decorative border, three double-page silhouette drawings with color, two full-page silhouette drawings with color, eight single-page silhouette drawings in black and white and forty-one silhouette drawings in the text.Publisher's cream parchment over boards, front cover decoratively stamped in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, pictorial end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine darkened, extremities of binding a little rubbed but overall an excellent copy."The immediate aftermath of the war brought Some British Ballads (1919), and the two volumes of Cinderella (1919) and The Sleeping Beauty (1920), retold by C.S. Evans, in which his gift for silhouette was given full play?" (Derek Hudson. Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work, p. 108)."Rackham gave his talk to on Silhouettes to the Art Workers' Guild in November 1919, the month in which Cinderella, the first of his two great silhouette books, was published. Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty differed from Rackhams' preceding books in relying almost wholly for their effect on silhouette. It is immediately clear that Rackham is a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humour by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going. Silhouette books, even with additional colours had lower production costs than their colour plate equivalents, and so were an attractive option both for publishers and customers in the uncertain post-war market." (James Hamilton. Arthur Rackham, A Biography, p. 188).Riall, p. 142 (mentioning only the 1/1200 unsigned copies); Latimore and Haskell, pp. 51/52 (mentioning only the trade edition).

        THE RESCUE

1920. A Romance of the Shallows. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1920. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition, published a month before Dent's London edition.~THE RESCUE was Conrad's albatross, the book which hung about his neck from the beginning of his writing career until almost the end of his life. It was begun in 1896 [as THE RESCUER] as an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Lingard... But the book just would not sort itself out and it took Conrad another twenty years, working on it sporadically, before the much laboured over manuscript was finally completed 25 May 1919. [Cagle]~This copy is from the first printing (gathered in 8s -- the second printing is virtually identical but is gathered in 16s). Included is the very scarce dust jacket, unusual for the DP&Co Conrad books in that it is pictorial; it too is in the first state, with the $1.90 price on the front turn-in increased to $2.00 with an over-stamp. This is a fine, bright copy; the jacket is near-fine with minor wear at the foot of its spine (affecting the letter "P"). In our experience this jacket is scarcer than several earlier American Conrad jackets; it is also much scarcer than Dent's edition's jacket. Cagle A49a.

Zelenaia palochka: dvukhnedel'nyi illiustrirovannyi zhurnal dlia detei [The green stick: a bi-weekly illustrated journal for children]. Nos. 1 and 4. With original subscription form blank for 1921.

Paris: Russkoe knigoizdatel'stvo "Sever" 1920 - Small quartos (27 x 18 cm). Staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 33, [7] and 43, [5] pp. Illustrations and advertisements. Wrappers dust-soiled; corners chipped; one issue with tears to spine extremities; text evenly toned and brittle; subscription form in very good condition. Two (of eight) issues of this Russian emigre children's journal of poetry, short stories, and fairy tales, published by in Paris and printed by the Zemgor, a Russian relief association re-established in Paris in 1920 with the aim of providing aid for Russian refugees, especially children. The journal published the works of some of the best Russian writers active in the emigration, such as Konstantin Balmont, Ivan Bunin, Aleksandr Kuprin, and Sasha Chernyi. Among its illustrators were Sergei Sudeikin, Georgii Lukomskii, and Nikolai Remizov (Re-Mi), though the cover illustration appears to be unattributed. These two issues contain contributions by Ivan Bunin, Aleksei Kuprin, Nikolai Rubakin, M. Pervukhin, A. Drozdov, M. Struve, and Count A. Tolstoy, an obituary of Leonid Andreev, as well as numerous illustrations. The journal's name, which means “the green stick,” derives from a story Tolstoy was told as a child, according to which a magical green stick with an inscription was buried on the family's estate; were it to be found, it would destroy evil and bring happiness to mankind. Evidently, only eight issues were published of this bi-weekly journal (October 1920-January 1921). KVK, OCLC show scattered holdings at Amherst, McGill, NYPL, UNC Chapel Hill, Stanford and Utah.
