Frederick J. Suhr, President, Art Directors Club, 1923-1924. Presented on the Occasion of a Dinner Given in His Honor at the Elks Club, April 11, 1924

Unpaginated album created in honor of Suhr in conjunction with the third annual dinner held by the Art Directors Club, containing some 90 original works of art in various media by leading American illustrators of the 1920's, almost every work signed and inscribed to Suhr, the inscriptions creating the impression of a much beloved president, friend, and advocate for the profession. Folio. Orig. gilt-stamped full morocco, a few minor scuffs at extremities. New York 1924. A unique treasure trove of American illustration by some of the greatest practitioners of the time. Works include original watercolor paintings and drawings, oil colors on paper and boards, etchings, lithographs, photogravures, hand-calligraphed letters and pronouncements, etc., many with loving inscriptions both serious and tongue-in-cheek. Among the noted artists are Charles Dana Gibson, who contributed an ink drawing of a classic "Gibson Girl", Martin Lewis ("The Roustabout", a sand-ground etching), Tony Sarg, James Chapin, Henry Dorr Steele, Henry Quinan, Heyworth Campbell, Wynne Murphy, Harry Lees, George Bonté, Louis Musgrove, Harry Marx, Ruskin Williams, Will Hammell, Edward Molyneux, R. Wettereau, Guy Gayler Clark, William Fletcher White, Willard Fairchild, Joseph Cummings Chase, Horace Devitt Welsh, Nathaniel Pousette-Dart, C. Clyde Squires, and many others. A beautiful album, shedding light not only on the quality and style of 1920's New York illustration, but on the close-knit culture of the profession as well.

        Romance of the Greys.

Decoy Press. London. 1920. - Folio, 17.5 x 12 inches; eleven mounted color plates after works by Christopher Clark, R.I. At rear, six pp. of advertising touting "The 'Greys,' the big cigarette with the choice flavor"; these adverts feature black and white illustrations (one depicts the R-34 airship) several of which are by Christopher Clark. Front and rear covers abraded along top edge. Toning and very light buckling to endpapers. Printed dedication on paste-down title on front cover reads: "For Colonel W.E.R. Kelly. With the Compliments of Major Drapkin & Co." The Introduction to the volume identifies its intent: to trace the history of the "Scots Greys" in word and picture. "The Second Royal North British Dragoons (the 'Scots Greys') have a record of nearly two hundred and fifty years' distinguished service. Every regiment has its romance--the romance of its history, traditions, corporate spirit. These memories of the glorious past help to form its fighting spirit, and are rightly treasured by those whose work it is to make the living regiment worthy of its honorable parentage." The narrative traces the Dragoons from 1678 through the First World War. Major Drapkin & Company were the manufacturers of Greys cigarettes. "Romance of the Greys" is an uncommon publication, listed as being held by only one WorldCat library. The volume, in good condition, is beautifully illustrated; contents bright and clean.         L. D. M. Paris. Nouveautés. No. 10.

[France] : [Zuber & Cie. and others], 1920. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong folio, [35.1 x 21.6 cm]. 479 single-sided wallpaper samples, 419 of which are numbered 1001-1434 with an ink stamp on verso and 60 of which are unnumbered half-size sheets (missing are numbers 1012, 1076, 1114, 1116, 1117, 1176, 1177, 1197, 1205, 1265, 1368, 1369, 1375, 1426, 1427). Bound in red buckram, leaves secured by two metal rivets, title gold stamped on upper cover. Upper cover loosely secured by buckram covering, minor rubbing to boards, some wear to edges and corners, advertisement for Quellhyd glue pasted inside upper cover. Some plates with minor toning from adjacent leaves, some plates with transfer from verso ink numbering, a few samples torn (1428, 1432 and 1434), some samples with pasted on mock-up design leaves (1094, 1100, 1227, 1229, 1243, 1249), very minor edge wear here and there. Overall excellently preserved with colors perfectly fresh. Remarkable volume of block-printed wallpaper samples from 1920s Paris, a collection of 479 examples of this decorative art showcasing both traditional designs and the most current (and often wonderfully garish) art deco styles. The volume, stamped L. D. M. Paris on its upper cover, is an archive of Roaring Twenties wallpapers decorated with stripes, geometrical designs, floral and fruit motifs, landscapes, pastoral scenes, classical and oriental motifs, and animal designs. A wide variety of printing techniques and paper stocks are used, with many examples printed with glittering gold and silver inks and in dazzling colors. Some 60 of the designs are paired with half-sheets suggesting coordinating friezes, borders, or mouldings. To a handful of the designs have been pasted black-and-white printed mock-ups of how such pairings might look on the wall. Leaves are inked stamped on their versos with consecutive reference numbers and short labels about usage (frise assortie, cretonne assortie, toile assortie, combinaison, plafond). At the edge of some sheets are printed details about origin (e.g., Fabrication française) or design titles (e.g., Vigne vierge). A few samples are marked as being washable (lavable "sana"). It must be surmised that the sampler collects examples from several producers, but specific evidence of a manufacturer can be found only on a few sheets, and those refer to the famous Zuber & Co. factory in Rixheim, a firm still in operation today and perhaps the last company still making block-printed papers and fabrics in this manner (see samples 1136, 1220, and 1221, labeled "Zuber & Cie (Alsace)"). As elegant as these Zuber examples are, perhaps the most intriguing design in the sampler is that stamped number 1264: It depicts (rather freely) Charlie Chaplin in his famous scene from The Kid (1921) in which the Little Tramp tries to feed the foundling (precariously hanging from a miniature hammock) using the spout of a teakettle; the design was presumably intended for the walls of a nursery decorated by movie-going parents. An adjacent sample depicts the young Breton housemaid Bécassine, the first female protagonist in the history of comics (perhaps from L'enfance de Bécassine [1913]).

Modes et Manières d'aujourd'hui. 1920 (neuvième année) : Robert Bonfils

Corrard Pierre Modes et manières d'aujourd'hui Inconnu 1920 UN ÉTAT PARFAIT. UNE PROVENANCE EXCEPTIONNELLE. UN EXEMPLAIRE SANS ÉQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY.

Chinese carpet workshop pattern book

Shanghai c1920 - Chinese Art Deco period carpet designs. Workshop pattern book with 21 original hand-painted gouache designs mounted on rectos of laid-paper album leaves representing a variety of samples with specifications for producing a range of qualities of woolen rug in 2 sizes; designs measuring from 220 x 192mm to 266 x 197mm; 220 x 220mm. Shanghai, c. 1920 Large 4to. Overall size : 450 x 350 mm. Contemporary greenish-grey cloth over stiff boards; decorative floral endpapers; yellow printed binder’s ticket (Nanyang Printing Co, Book-Binder and Stationary, 435 Kiukiang Road, Shanghai) pasted inside top corner of frontcover. The blank margin of each design incorporates the colour palette used; top margin of each design page with a pasted contemporary paper slip giving a typed code-word to explain the knot or line count of each individual sample, and the sizes of the rugs available for production : 9 x 12 ft & 8 x 10 ft; a typed note pasted inside frontcover provides a key for 7 of the code words and their quality specifications (the code words refer to qualities ranging from a ‘120 line Wool Rug’ to a ’60 line Wool Rug’ , each type decreasing in density of knots by 10 ‘lines’, the number of lines of knots per foot determining the line count); the blank margins of 5 designs (nos 4, 12, 14, 15, 20) have brief pencil and pen instructions in American-English with finishing details; blank margins of 3 pages (nos 3, 4, 7) bear a blind-stamp of the anonymous artist’s emblem with an elephant motif. The patterns in the present album appear to have been painted by a commercial artist working in a Shanghai carpet factory under American direction catering for western consumer tastes. The carefully executed designs, based on the traditional medallion type, arer richly ornamented with exquisite floral and chinoiserie motifs in vibrant colours evocative of the exuberance of Art Deco: traditional light blues have changed to darker shades, yellows and ivories are replaced by more dynamic purples, fuchsias, green, ochre and gold. Both designs and colouring are well preserved; blank corners of album leaves lightly waterstained, a few minor traces of usage, otherwise in remarkably good condition for a working manual of this kind. Chinese Art Deco rugs represent the ‘Golden Age’ of Shanghai, then known as the ‘Paris of the East’. Its wool industries responded to western demand during the economic boom of the 1920ies by producing high quality carpets in the fashionable colours and patterns of the period. A number of American.entrepreneurs were involved in this process, notably Walter Nichols and Helen Fette, and the present album is representative of patterns selected for export by a factory under western direction.         The Pageant of Peking.

Comprising Sixty-six Vandyck Photogravures of Peking and Environs from Photographs by Donald Mennie. With an Introduction by Putnam Weale. Shanghai: Watson 1920. With 66 tipped in Vandyck photogravures of Peking and environs. Folio. [8] + 40 pp. + plates. Limited to 1000 numbered copies. Well-preserved copy bound in original light blue leather gilt on spine and with title printed in gold on frontboard. Binding faded, internally very clean. First edition. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1944), was a Scottish businessman and amateur photographer who worked in early twentieth century China. From 1920 until his death in 1941, Mennie was a very powerful entrepreneur in coastal China. As a photographer, Mennie probably used the wet plate process, already a largely obsolete method in his time, and for his published prints, he mainly employed photogravure, a process emphasising the image softness and subtle tonal variation that suited his interest in pictorialism. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books of his images, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), providing views of Beijing and its environs. [Wikipedia].

European Circuses Scrap Books (3 volumes)

1920s, 1934-1938. Hardcover. Good. 4to. 32 by 27 cm. Mostly comprised of photographs, which have generally brief captions describing what is depicted -- the buildings, the infrastructure, the performers, the audience and other denizens of the circus, etc. Most of the photos are original, with some cut-outs from other publications. Also pasted in are programs, promotions and brochures associated with these circuses. The scrap books were obviously intended as a tool for set designers, costume designers, scenarists, screenwriters, and anyone associated with a production, prospective and/or in the works, that had or could have a circus scene. While MGM was the largest studio in the thirties, we are hard-pressed to think of notable movies it was involved with during these years with circus scenes. Perhaps its best known circus-related movie up to then was "He Who Gets Slapped", a 1924 vehicle for Lon Chaney Sr. and also starring the young Norma Shearer and John Gilbert, and one can see the relevance of many of the photos to that movie. While the movie clearly pre-dates the scrapbooks, it is apparent that MGM seriously considered a sound era remake of the silent movie, as evident from the surviving library cards in the volumes. (Why the studio didn't proceed with a remake of what had been a major hit we can not answer.) In the mid-1930s MGM also bought the rights to the musical extravaganza, "Jumbo", and that particular property surely did spur the compilation of these photos. That adaptation, though, didn't come to fruition until the early 1960s when Doris Day starred in it. The major circus-related movies of which we are aware, such as "Trapeze" or "The Greatest Show on Earth", were done by other studios. Still, regardless of how much MGM capitalized on this material for actual movies is beside the point. Here we get what seems an unvarnished glimpse of the circus, and specifically European circuses, from a bygone era. Considerable wear to the bindings. The photos can have rippling. MGM has its name stamped on most pages and often on the photos themselves.

MANUSCRIPT AERONAUTICAL REPAIR And MAINTENANCE NOTEBOOK. Dudrey Aircraft Co

[Portland, OR], (n. d.). Circa 1920. Maroon leather 3-ring binder. Outline remnants of airplane and other shape to front board [Dudrey Aircraft Co logo?]. Wear, scuffing, and faint spotting to binder, some corrosion to metal backstrip. Light bleedthrough to few pages of manuscript text; some edgewear to promotional and laid in material; occasional light soil; first leaf detached at two of the three binding holes. Generally clean and highly readable throughout. About VG.. 83 leaves, many with text and/or clippings to recto only; some blanks; additional aeronautic promotional material bound or laid in. Most pages ruled. Occasional hand-drawn diagrams, b/w photographic reproductions in instructional clippings. 10" x 6-3/4" Cyril Krugner's manuscript instructional notebook presumably for Dudrey Aircraft Company's aeronautic school, covering aeronautical repair, various engines, standardization, meteorology, a brief history of aviation, algorithms, and much more. Krugner is most well-known for having been the mechanic on Russell Merrill's flight to Ketchikan with Roy Davis in 1925, only the second such flight from the continental US to Alaska. Although the notebook begins with a Foreword followed by Krugner's signature, address, and "Dudrey Aircraft Co.," we speculate that Krugner was a student at the school, perhaps copying material from a shared class book or other source, rather than an instructor or employee there. Krugner was listed as an employee of Willamette Iron and Steel Works in the 1918 Portland city directory, and as an ironworker in later directories until 1923, when he moved from the address listed in this notebook; the sporadic and inconsistent pagination also suggests that much of this material is derived from other sources, with perhaps the mathematics and some of the diagrams being Krugner's. Dudrey Aircraft Company was one of the earliest to take advantage of the boom in aviation in Portland by offering courses at Broomfield Flying Field in both aeronautical mechanics and piloting; they also proudly advertised the fact that their student body included both the first woman and the first Chinese man to attend any of the aviation schools in the city. In 1920, Dudrey offered free courses as part of federal vocational training, and it seems likely that Krugner took advantage of this opportunity or a similar one while working at Willamette's. He later worked as a draftsman or mechanic at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, Varney Air Lines (which would later merge with three other companies to become United Air Lines), and the Bonneville Project. In addition to the manuscript material, which includes technical specifications for the Hall-Scott L-6, Rolls Royce Aero and Hispano-Suiza engines, Krugner compiled and bound in promotional trade catalogs and other material for the Curtiss K-12, OX-5, and K-6, and pasted in material on the Zeppelin-Staaken Monoplone. A price list for Weaver rifles is laid in, as is an oil-stained packing slip from Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corp, dated March 26, 1918, on the back of which is a penciled drawing diagramming the interrelationship of gas pumps and piping. Overall, a fascinating example of early aviation instruction, compiled by a young draftsman and mechanic at the start of his career.

[FUTURIST LANGUAGE] Grammatika yazyka chelovechestva AO, perevod s AO [i.e. Grammar of the Language of the Mankind. Translated from AO]

Chelovechestvo [i.e. Mankind]: Moscow, 1920. [2], 20 pp. 16x13 cm. In contemporary wrappers. Tears and soiling of the wrappers. Otherwise very good. In 1915 Velimir Khlebnikov founded 'Soyuz 317' (i.e. The Unity of 317 or The Society of the Chairmen of the Globe), and soon it was joined by the members of artistic avant-garde elite like Prokofiev or Rabindranath Tagore. Khlebnikov's proclamations of that time transmitted ideas of universal brotherhood and the unity of people of culture who are destined to rule the universe. This brochure was created by Gordin brothers who were influenced by Khelbnikov's ideas (hence the pseudonym of the author of the text - Beobi which was taken from Khlebnikov's poem). The Gordin brothers took futuristic ideas on the new anarchic level. Brothers Aba (1887-1964) and Volf Gordin were theoreticians of anarchism, followers of Kropotkin and Bakunin. Aba was the founder of a new movement - individualist anarchism (or universalist anarchism). They've created their own organization and called themselves «panarchists». In 1917-1920 they published several brochures on panarchism. In 1920 Volf created language of international communication and named it AO. On the first page of this grammar book it's stated: «There is no god, no nature. Talk like humans, use 'AO'». In the brochure they give alphabet, pronunciation rules, parts of speech, abbreviations etc. There were only eleven sounds in the language, five vowels and six consonants. In writing sounds were depicted by numbers. Gordin stressed that his language is universal, and universality excludes any existing alphabets. In 1924 writing of the language was reformed, and AO-2 was presented at the First International exhibition of interplanetary machines and mechanisms in 1927 as the language of cosmic communication. This brochure isn't recorded anywhere. Possibly one of the few copies produced.

Great Northern Recreational Map of Glacier National Park Montana, Waterton Lakes National Park Alberta.

Great Northern Railway. No date. Ca. 1920s. - Color pictorial / pictographic map, 18 x 31 1/2 inches on sheet size 18 3/4 x 32 1/2 inches, professionally mounted on linen backing. Fold lines are now minimized; small section at upper left edge that was missing has been reconstructed in an unobtrusive manner. Very attractive piece. A handsome bird's eye view style pictorial map by Joseph Scheuerle, brightly colored and full of humorous touches, with a plethora of mountains named. "Who was who in American Art" lists Scheuerle as "painter of the Sioux Indian in 1909, the Crow and Blackfoot, 1910, the Cheyenne in 1911 and others. He was a friend of C.M. Russell, Gollings, and de Young." Here the emphasis is on recreational possibilities for the Caucasian tourist, including golf, swimming, tennis, fishing. In front of the title cartouche at lower right is pictured a group of Native American Indians (being filmed by a Caucasian tourist) with the artist at work on his canvas. The particular edition was issued on thicker paper and with no text on the verso (as opposed to the more frequently encountered map, the centrefold of a tourist pamphlet.

In the latter book, Rackham broke new ground in the illustration of Irish literature. He had been persuaded to tackle Stephens's stories by Walter Starkie, who had vowed to give his uncle 'no peace' until he had agreed to illustrate them. In writing the stories, Stephens had attempted to create an Irish equivalent of The Arabian Nights, his own poetic retelling of the stories which existed in the oral tradition and in Gaelic texts, but which had not appeared accessibly in print. Rackham rose to the occasion, and his nephew's haunting of him was justified. The Dublin Independent was particularly warm in welcoming the collection, remarking: 'We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarised us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham's pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming." (Hamilton, p. 128)."Rackham's two great books of the twenties were James Stephens' Irish Fairy Tales of 1920 and Shakespeare's Tempest of 1926... Beyond the softness of style and inventiveness, the most striking thing about the colour plates for Irish Fairy Tales is the felicitous and appropriate use of celtic borders" (Gettings, p. 143).Latimore and Haskell, p. 52. Riall, p. 138. Gettings, p.179. Hamilton, p. 185.
