[Wyeth, N C - Presentation Copy] Robinson Crusoe

New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1920. First Wyeth Edition. Original blue cloth, gilt stamped, with a color pictorial cover label. Illustrated with 12 full-page color plates by Wyeth. This copy owned by Peter Logan Bockius, Jr., the great-grandson of George Bockius, the grandfather of Carolyn Brennerman Bockius Wyeth, the wife of N.C. Wyeth. Carolyn was one of ten children, and Peter's grandfather and namesake, Peter Bockius, was one of seven children. The Bockius' were free-spirited, and the entire extended family, along with N. C. Wyeth, was close-knit. The books are variously inscribed to "Pete" or "Peter L. Bockius, jr" (see individual descriptions below) and either simply signed "N.C. Wyeth" or "from Uncle Convers". Since Peter was not Wyeth's nephew, but rather his wife's second cousin, Wyeth must have felt a particular affection for the boy. Wyeth inscriptions are scarce, and familial presentations are rare. This copy INSCRIBED BY WYETH on the half-title, "A Merry Xmas / to Pete / Uncle Convers / 1922". Spine dulled; frontispiece tissue guard lightly foxed. Covers and contents fine.

        Autograph Postcard

Ca. 1920, [Hungary] - Written in black ink. Undated. 138 × 89 mm. Asking about the howabouts of Magdus, the addressee of the postcard, nicknamed as "Cigány" (Gipsy), and Gizike. Inquires if the two girls are still thinking about him, and sends his regards to everyone. Leo Szilard (1898-1964) was a Jewish Hungarian-born physicist and inventor, who conceived the nuclear chain reaction, the cyclotron particle accelerator and the electron microscope; patented the idea of nuclear reactor, invented a linear accelerator. Szilárd worked for the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb for the US. Almost nothing is know about the circumstances of the birth of this postcard, however according to the family legend, Szilárd admired Magdus and visited her at Püspöknádasd (today: Mecseknádasd) several times, where Magdus' uncle was the director of the local school. Stamp removed. Damaged at lower right corner, otherwise in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART: NO COAL STRIKE WORRY NOW!

      - (CAMPBELL,LANG)illus. UNCLE WIGGILY ORIGINAL ART for comic strip by Howard Garis. Garis originally created Uncle Wiggily for a newspaper comic strip and it became so popular that it was nationally syndicated on a daily basis. Lang Campbell is the artist who drew the characters which later evolved into many books. Offered here is a fabulous 4 panel continuous pen and ink strip that appeared in the Saturday newspapers circa 1920. The image measures 12/1/4" wide by 3 1/2" high on high quality paper. Signed in the corner, it is in fine condition with pencilled caption in the margin reading "No Coal Strike Now!" and with each panel featuring Uncle Wiggily and an elephant. Each panel is remarkably detailed and amazingly has none of the usual white-out corrections that usually appear on these types of pieces. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. From The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie. A New Edition.

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, [1920 or later] - Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. In the original publisher's pictorial box. Gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1931, touch of rubbing to corners and ends of spine, in the price clipped dust jacket, wear to extremities, chipping to corners, chip to top end of spine with tape on verso, spine toned, light soiling to panels. An excellent copy. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 49 coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white drawings in the text, by Rackham. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was first published in 1906, in both deluxe and trade editions, with the plates gathered at the end. The "New Edition" of 1912 is in larger format, with new illustrations dated 1912, the colour plates distributed throughout the text, the text entirely reset (readily identifiable by running headlines in a large italic typeface), uncoloured head- and tailpieces to each chapter, a calligraphic title page printed in two colours without the word "Limited" after the publishers' name, and with untrimmed fore and lower edges. In the first impression, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed across the page, with a blank verso. Later impressions of the New Edition have the title page printed in black only and the company name given as "Hodder & Stoughton Limited": these were presumably issued after December 1919, when the firm was incorporated as a limited company. The edges of later impressions are trimmed straight all round, resulting in a very slightly shorter book. This copy comes from another edition, superficially similar to the later impressions of the 1912 New Edition, but with the text now restored to the original 1906 setting, distinguished by the headlines printed all in capital letters, but enhanced by the addition of the head- and tailpieces from the 1912 edition. The map of Kensington Gardens is printed perpendicular, with the uncoloured illustration of Kensington Gardens on the verso. This appears to be the final form of the book as it continued to be issued by Hodder and Stoughton throughout the 1920s. The price-clipped jacket has the illustration entitled "A chrysanthemum heard her, and said pointedly, 'Hoity-toity, what is this?'" mounted on the front panel. The box has the illustration "An afternoon when the Gardens were white with snow" mounted on the lid. Laid in to the book is a four-page folding advert for Hodder and Stoughton's illustrated books, undated but giving the price of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens bound in cloth, with 50 colour plates, as 15/- net. Latimore & Haskell p. 40; Riall p. 114. [Attributes: First Edition]

Photograph Album Documenting Pacific Northwest Lumbering Operations: 1910s-1920s

Oregon, 1920. Photograph Album. Very Good. 8" x 11" album with approximately 325 photographs ranging in size from about 3"x3" to 5"x7". Said to have come from an Oregon estate. Photographs are in nice shape; a few have creases, chips, and edge wear. Most are glued onto the pages, and most are uncaptioned. The album has some light wear at its edges, and the original binding tie has been replaced. The first fifty to sixty photographs are of a logging operation and show workers, their cabins, their families, what appears to be a large saw mill, trestle construction, logging locomotives (one is marked "OMCo.") and work cars, draught horses pulling sleighs through deep snow, work crews including one of a mess line in deep snow, and more. One photo shows the front of an old automobile, but I haven't been able to identify the state of the license plate. Another ten to fifteen show street scenes with store fronts, a school (St. Patrick's Parochial School), a church, and the inside of an ice cream parlor or luncheonette. The remainder are photos of people at home, camping, hiking, swimming, hunting, boating, on vacation, etc. One shows a young woman riding in a buggy pulled by an ostrich.

        En Chine [Manuscript]

Original manuscript, 1920-[1921]. Handwritten on 516 large (31.0 x 21.0 cm), numbered leaves. Preserved in a modern cloth-covered clam-shell box (35.5 x 27.0 x 8.5 cm).= Manuscript by the controversial French poet, writer, and politician Abel Jean Désiré Bonnard (1883-1968), member of the Académie Française, and writer of more than 15 works; both fiction and non-fiction. This manuscript deals with his travels to China, published in two volumes as "Notes de voyage: En Chine (1920-1921)" (Paris, Artheme Fayard, 1924). The manuscript was dedicated "à ma mère, parce qu elle me dit que cela lui fait plaisir, et que je voudrais lui faire tous les plaisirs possibles" [to my mother, because she told me that it made her happy, and I would do everything to make her happy], and dated juin [June] 1920. In other words, the dedication was written during his voyage. Sections of the manuscript deal, for instance, with Pekin (Beijing), le Yang-tsé, Chinese villages, Hong-Kong, and the return voyage. Later in his life, Bonnard moved politically to the extreme right. During WWII he became a minister in Pétain's Vichy gouvernment: "Bonnard was one of only a few members expelled from the Académie française after World War II for collaboration with Germany. Bonnard was condemned in absentia to death during the épuration légale period for wartime activities. However, Francisco Franco granted him political asylum in Spain. In 1960, he returned to France to face retrial for his crimes. He received a symbolic sentence of 10 years banishment to be counted from 1945, but dissatisfied with the verdict of guilty, he chose to return to Spain where he lived out the remainder of his life" (Wikipedia). His book "Les modérés", first published in 1936 has recently [2013] been republished. The manuscript contains many additions and corrections by the author. Added: a few old journal clippings related to the author. A few leaves a bit frayed and chipped at the out margins, otherwise very good and well-readable. A unique item.

        Bob et Bobette en ménage

BOB ET BOBETTE EN MÉNAGE. Roman. (...)" (Préface, André Salmon, Octobre 1919) TRES BON EXEMPLAIRE, TEL QUE PARU, DU PLUS RARE TIRAGE (1/10 JAPON).

        En Chine [Manuscript]

      - Original manuscript, 1920-[1921]. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

» - ce me semble fou !

Head Master of Charterhouse. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1920. Golden Treasury Series. Small octavo (5 15/16 x 3 13/16 inches; 151 x 98 mm.). xlii, 167, [1, imprint] pp. Bound by Bayntun of Bath ca. 1925 (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in). Full teal morocco, covers with double-gilt rules surrounding a panel with elaborate gilt floral corner pieces and four additional floral designs and gilt pointille work. Spine with five raised bands, elaborately decorated in a floral design and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt decorated board-edges, and elaborate gilt turn-ins, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Minimal fading to spine, rectangular label with ink inscription on front paste-down, otherwise very fine.Marcus Aurelius. Latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus; [26 April 121 ? 17 March 180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as the Meditations, is the most significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. During his reign, the Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian Empire in the East: Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the capital Ctesiphon in 164. In central Europe, Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi, & Sarmatians with success during the Marcomannic Wars, although the threat of the Germanic tribes began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. A revolt in the East led by Avidius Cassius failed to gain momentum and was suppressed immediately. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, are still revered as a literary monument to a philosophy of service and duty, describing how to find and preserve equanimity in the midst of conflict by following nature as a source of guidance and inspiration.

1920 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Rare

This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, , [1920 or later]. From The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie. A New Edition. Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. In the original publisher's pictorial box. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 49 coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white drawings in the text, by Rackham. Gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1931, touch of rubbing to corners and ends of spine, in the price clipped dust jacket, wear to extremities, chipping to corners, chip to top end of spine with tape on verso, spine toned, light soiling to panels. An excellent copy.

1920. Folio. 2 vols. German ms. on paper. (6), 207, (1) pp., 2 plates (1 folding). (102) pp., 1 plate. In red and black ink throughout, some headings in purple ink, numerous illustrations (mostly in ink, but some in pencil raised with white crayon). Both volumes signed and dated by the artist. Contemporary half cloth with ms. label to upper board. Visually stunning, unpublished original manuscript of horse anatomy, drawn by a trained artist and containing an extensive discussion of the sketches in the author's dynamic hand. Hubert Haslinger, actually a sculptor based in Linz/Austria, created this encompassing work shortly after WWI. The work is subtitled, in full: "Praktisches Handbuch des Pferdes. Seine Proportionslehre, äussere Form und Fehler. Unterschiedsmerkmale der Rassen usw." (Practical Manual of the Horse. Its Proportions, Exterior Shape, and Faults.
