Head Master of Charterhouse. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1920. Golden Treasury Series. Small octavo (5 15/16 x 3 13/16 inches; 151 x 98 mm.). xlii, 167, [1, imprint] pp. Bound by Bayntun of Bath ca. 1925 (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in). Latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus; [26 April 121 ? 17 March 180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as the Meditations, is the most significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. During his reign, the Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian Empire in the East: Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the capital Ctesiphon in 164. In central Europe, Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi, & Sarmatians with success during the Marcomannic Wars, although the threat of the Germanic tribes began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. A revolt in the East led by Avidius Cassius failed to gain momentum and was suppressed immediately. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, are still revered as a literary monument to a philosophy of service and duty, describing how to find and preserve equanimity in the midst of conflict by following nature as a source of guidance and inspiration.

1920 Original Hardback Wisden, Very Rare

This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.

        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, , [1920 or later]. From The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie. A New Edition. Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. In the original publisher's pictorial box. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 49 coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white drawings in the text, by Rackham. Gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1931, touch of rubbing to corners and ends of spine, in the price clipped dust jacket, wear to extremities, chipping to corners, chip to top end of spine with tape on verso, spine toned, light soiling to panels. An excellent copy. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was first published in 1906, in both deluxe and trade editions, with the plates gathered at the end. The "New Edition" of 1912 is in larger format, with new illustrations dated 1912, the colour plates distributed throughout the text, the text entirely reset (readily identifiable by running headlines in a large italic typeface), uncoloured head- and tailpieces to each chapter, a calligraphic title page printed in two colours without the word "Limited" after the publishers' name, and with untrimmed fore and lower edges. In the first impression, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed across the page, with a blank verso. Later impressions of the New Edition have the title page printed in black only and the company name given as "Hodder & Stoughton Limited": these were presumably issued after December 1919, when the firm was incorporated as a limited company. The edges of later impressions are trimmed straight all round, resulting in a very slightly shorter book. This copy comes from another edition, superficially similar to the later impressions of the 1912 New Edition, but with the text now restored to the original 1906 setting, distinguished by the headlines printed all in capital letters, but enhanced by the addition of the head- and tailpieces from the 1912 edition. The map of Kensington Gardens is printed perpendicular, with the uncoloured illustration of Kensington Gardens on the verso. This appears to be the final form of the book as it continued to be issued by Hodder and Stoughton throughout the 1920s. The price-clipped jacket has the illustration entitled "A chrysanthemum heard her, and said pointedly, 'Hoity-toity, what is this?'" mounted on the front panel. The box has the illustration "An afternoon when the Gardens were white with snow" mounted on the lid. Laid in to the book is a four-page folding advert for Hodder and Stoughton's illustrated books, undated but giving the price of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens bound in cloth, with 50 colour plates, as 15/- net.

Contemporary half cloth with ms. label to upper board. Visually stunning, unpublished original manuscript of horse anatomy, drawn by a trained artist and containing an extensive discussion of the sketches in the author's dynamic hand. Hubert Haslinger, actually a sculptor based in Linz/Austria, created this encompassing work shortly after WWI. The work is subtitled, in full: "Praktisches Handbuch des Pferdes. A.A. Milne, 2 letters separated by 20 years: Christopher Robin, catalyst for the "Winnie the Pooh" stories is born and later fights heroically for England in World War II

Chelsea, UK / Sussex, UK, Aug. 29, 1920 / Sept. 11, 1943. 5.5" x 7.5" / 5.25" x 7". "(1) One page, ALS, written on verso with recto left blank. Signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne"" and dated ""29. 8. 20"" (August 29, 1920). 5.5"" x 7.5"" on stationary with the letterhead of ""13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074."" Expected center fold. Very soft rippling to the page. Near fine condition.(2) One page ALS written on verso and recto, including a post script in the margins. Signed in Milne's nickname ""Blue"" dated ""Sep 11th/43"". 5.25"" x 7"" on stationary with the letterhead of ""COTCHFORD FARM, HARTFIELD, SUSSEX"". Expected center fold. Near fine condition.A stunning set of contrasting letters taking the reader from before the days of Winnie The Pooh, starting with the birth of Christopher Robin, whom Milne nicknamed ""Billy"" and later called ""Moon,"" and then to a fast forward look over 20 years later with Christopher Robin all grown up and going to war in Iraq during WWII. The letters were written by Milne to his close friend, Vincent Seligman. In Milne's first letter, dated August 29, 1920, just one week after the birth of Christopher Robin, Milne writes exuberantly about his son saying ""Billy and his mother are both going strong"". A wonderful letter with great content, taking the reader to a time before Milne's huge literary breakthrough, and to the beginning with the birth of his son, Christopher Robin. In the balance of the letter, Milne also refers to ""The Daggar Opera,"" which at the time was a serialized American adventure film formally called ""The Vanishing Daggar."" These serialized films would show over many many weeks, which no doubt must have felt to Milne like it was showing ""forever."" Apparently, Milne had just concluded writing a new play, which was waiting for a theater opening in order for it to be shown. In his letter, he most likely was referring to his play ""The Dover Road', which eventually made it to a theater in New York (the Bijou) in late 1921.The second letter was also written to Vincent Seligman, but over 20 years later and was now composed from Milne's home at Cotchford Farm (Cotchfield Farm was the creative birthplace of Milne's wonderful stories about his then young son, Christopher Robin, Winnie The Pooh - the honey loving bear, and their adventures in the Hundred Acre Woods). While reading Milne's letter, one reflects on how the peaceful tranquility of those stories is suddenly shattered as one is transported from the youthful innocence and serenity of his son, Christopher Robin, who used to play and explore the woods with his stuffed animals, to the present day moment of the letter, dated September 11th, 1943, throwing the reader into the trenches of WWII, and discovering that Christopher Robin is now stationed in Iraq fighting in the war. In his letter, Milne notes that ""Moon"" (his nickname for Christopher Robin) ""left Iraq (Kirkuk, to be exact) in March, and trekked in his little truck across desert after desert and river after river … where his division joined the 8th army in time for their last battle. He was at the Great Surrender, and wrote a thrilling account of it."" And in one quick moment, the reader realizes Christopher Robin is now all grown up, as has the rest of the world, and there was no going back.Milne, who was Captain of the British Home Guard in WWII, otherwise makes several additional references to the war with his letter, shown in full below:""Dear Vi, Sep 11th/43 Very glad to hear from you. To come to your third raison d'ecrire (reason to write) first:Yes , please. I should love to lunch with you at 1:30 (if I may/ on Tuesday, Sept 28th. All right? Good.""Current Affairs 50"" has gone very well, and the Director of ABCA is enthusiastic about it: but oh, what a time I had. Everybody being terrified of anything being said which anybody might think would offend anybody else. Their fee was 20 (illegible) and I took the precaution of saying at once that I would write it for this on condition that I got the money if my article wasn't used, and (illegible) ... if it was. This gave the Director a considerable pull with the war office, but even then he had to apologize for me in a much too apprehensive foreward Moon left Iraq (Kirkuk, to be exact) in March, and trekked in his little truck across desert after desert and river after river known to Bob's geography – Tigris, Euphrates, Jordan, Nile – 3000 miles to ? Eufidarille?, where his division joined the 8th army in time for their last battle. He was at the Great Surrender, and wrote a thrilling account of it. His division staged in (illegible) in Africa when Sicily was invaded, and he amused himself (1) taking a convoy of his own to Algiers and back and 2) having malaria which for him three happy weeks away from sand and flies and on his return to the desert being stung by a scorpion, which didn't (illegible) him much. Anyway he felt that the desert had nothing more to show him, and so he left it for -- where? I don't know. All I know is that from between – the – lines evidence in his last letter (dates August 31st) he was off. At a guess I should say in reserve again (in Sicily) to the 8th Army in Calabria, but of course he may be in one of those other landings. I just live for the next letter – and hope between times. He has been very happy; writes always once, generally twice and often four times a week. At great length, but unfortunately for us, very cautiously: and has seen a hell of a lot of the world. For … he gives … a place to Algeria (parts of), Jordan Valley and Cape town, but says it's all beautiful, even the desert.Lots of love and kiss for Bobs, …. BlueP.S. opened my bottle of sherry for Italy and drank confusion to the King's remaining enemies. The possibilities are enormous and thrilling. For months now I have put the end of this German war at Dec 10th, 1943 ... you really ought to be in Cairo preparing to talk to the natives at Salonica.""An incredible set of letters from the author of arguably one of the most beloved children's stories of the 20th century, referencing his son, Christopher Robin, the pivotal catalyst for the birth of the stories of Winnie The Pooh.Milne's letter was written to Vincent Seligman, who was a German Jew whose family emigrated to London and the United States in the 19th century. A handsome copy, clean and well preserved, just a trifle aged. SCARCE FIRST EDITION. Rackham’s friend James Stephens wrote his collection of Irish Stories drawing from a rich oral tradition and also from the original Gaelic texts. He succeeded in presenting the old tales in a poetic and accessible form for the general modern reader. The collection is an excellent introduction to traditional Irish Fairy Stories and includes: The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, The Boyhood of Fionn, The Carl of the Drab Coat, Mongan’s Frenzy, and many more. Rackham brought forth another collection of dazzling and imaginative illustrations. The Dublin Independent wrote a warm review of Rackham’s Irish Fairy Tales: “We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarized us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham’s pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming.”

        Katastroofid (1919–1920) [Catastrophes].

Tallinn: "Auringo" kirjastus 1920 - Octavo (22.2 × 14.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers with a constructivist vignette and typography by Alexander Mülber; 63, [1] pp. A very good copy, uncut and unopened. The third book of poems by the most significant Estonian avant-garde writer, who eventually attempted to fuse literary and visual constructivism in the collection "Geometrical man" (Geomeetriline inimene). In the volume accompanying a 2012 exhibition of Estonian avant-garde art at the Kumu Museum in Tallinn, Tiit Hennoste writes, citing Barbarus: "His positive programme is a declaration of revolution and the role of the poet as creator of new life: '. new poetry is written on the wall of the big city with an electric finger, is created in the smoke of factory chimneys, the burning flames of smelting ovens: new poetry is cosmic, international, the poetry of humanity [.].' Barbarus's poetry became Constructivist. The first fruit of this is the manifestation of Estonian Constructivism, Geomeetriline inimene, featuring Barbarus's texts accompanied by illustrations and designs by Jaan Vahtra [.] This was the first pure Estonian metropolitan poetry collection, the sources of which one can find in contemporary French poetry" (Geomeetriline inimene, 81). The poems in this collection celebrate the sensual pleasures and joy of life, but also spread the feeling of revolution and civil war that characterized the time. Already, they are quite visually innovative, with ample use of indentations, enjambment, and ellipses. Barbarus (Johannes Vares, 1890-1946), lived as a doctor in Pärnu, from where he pursued his literary career and was also active as a socialist politician. Afraid of the NKVD, he committed suicide in 1946. Not much is known about the designer, Aleksander Mülber, an Estonian graphic artist and painter who participated in an exhibition of the "Pallas" Art Union in 1919 and worked with the "Arlekiin" publisher in Tartu before moving to Paris in 1920, where he died in 1931. KVK, OCLC show only two copies, at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and Yale University Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited,, [1920 or later]. From The Little White Bird by J. M. Barrie. A New Edition. Quarto. Original smooth green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket supplied from another copy, priced 25/- on the front flap. Colour frontispiece and 49 colour plates mounted on plain paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine faded and worn at ends, a few marks to cloth, some browning internally, chiefly marginal, a good copy in the supplied dust jacket that is a little rubbed but generally fresh and unfaded. Signed by Rackham together with a sketch of Solomon Caw the crow, additionally signed by the author, J. M. Barrie, and by Princess Beatrice, the Marchioness of Milford Haven, Princess Marie Louise, and George Frampton, sculptor of the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens commissioned by Barrie in 1912. The volume was very likely signed on the occasion of the "Peter Pan Party" in aid of Dr Barnardo's, at Claridge's, which was first held in 1920 and continued as an annual fundraising event into the 1930s. This copy is a later edition, not noted by the bibliographers. The title page is printed in black, with "Limited" after the publisher's name (Hodder and Stoughton became a limited company in December 1919), but the text is altered from the 1912 printing, being reproduced from the original 1906 edition (the running headlines all in capital letters), but with the head- and tailpieces from the 1912 new edition incorporated, all printed on slightly coarser paper stock with machine-trimmed edges, resulting in a very slightly shorter book. The map of Kensington Gardens is printed perpendicular, with the uncoloured illustration of Kensington Gardens on the verso. The illustration mounted on the front panel of the dust jacket is a duplicate of the frontispiece. The jacket is priced 25/- net at the foot of the front flap.

Photograph Album Documenting Pacific Northwest Lumbering Operations: 1910s-1920s

Oregon, 1920. Photograph Album. Very Good. 8" x 11" album with approximately 325 photographs ranging in size from about 3"x3" to 5"x7". Said to have come from an Oregon estate. Photographs are in nice shape; a few have creases, chips, and edge wear. Most are glued onto the pages, and most are uncaptioned. The album has some light wear at its edges, and the original binding tie has been replaced. The first fifty to sixty photographs are of a logging operation and show workers, their cabins, their families, what appears to be a large saw mill, trestle construction, logging locomotives (one is marked "OMCo.") and work cars, draught horses pulling sleighs through deep snow, work crews including one of a mess line in deep snow, and more. One photo shows the front of an old automobile, but I haven't been able to identify the state of the license plate. Another ten to fifteen show street scenes with store fronts, a school (St. Patrick's Parochial School), a church, and the inside of an ice cream parlor or luncheonette. The remainder are photos of people at home, camping, hiking, swimming, hunting, boating, on vacation, etc. One shows a young woman riding in a buggy pulled by an ostrich.

1920. Various formats. Altogether 39 pp. on 23 ff. Two addenda (cf. below). Comprehensive family correspondence centering around Walter Benjamin and his brother, the physician and later resistance fighter Georg, Georg's fiancée Grete Kliem, and her friend Lisabeth. 1920. ½ S. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.
