??????????????????? [ Nij?man bun ichi Ranry? Boruneo (Tarakan fukin) ] 1: 200,000 Scale Maps of Dutch Borneo (Tarakan and its Vicinity), Nos.1 to 24

Sanb? Honbu Rikuchi Sokury?-bu ????????? [Land Survey Department, Army General Staff Headquarters]. Complete set of 24 folded sheets showing Tarakan Island and its vicinity in great detail. Scale 1: 200,000. Each map measures approximately 58 x 46cm, includes a key featuring important resources and geographical points of interest. Two sheets a little stained, one sheet damp affected at edges with some very minor loss on the left hand margin in one area, some occasional browning and spotting but overall very good. Pencilled annotations on reverse in Japanese. These maps which show the map data in Dutch and the legend in Japanese were based on Dutch maps made between 1920 and 1936. Each shows the character ? or secret in the upper right corner. Prior to World War II the island of Tarakan off the coast of Borneo had been an important to the Dutch as an oil production centre. After the taking of the island by the Japanese the sabotage done to the oil refinery was quickly repaired and the island also became important to the Japanese. By 1945 the tide of the war had turned and the island became well known as the first stage of the Allied campaign to take Borneo back from the Japanese. Australian troops landed on Tarakan on May 1st, 1945 anticipating a short battle however it wasn't until June 21st that the Australian, United States and Dutch forces who were involved in this operation, code named "Oboe One" were victorious. Victory for the Allies on Tarakan came at the cost of a great many lives, most particularly among the Japanese forces. .

        African-American Man's Scrapbook

Providence, Rhode Island, 1920. Good to Very Good. Scrapbook made from a half-leather 7" x 8.5" used business ledger with over 300 items glued to approximately 150 pages. Primarily newspaper clippings, with two small photos of young women, a Masonic membership application, a Templar's Ball program, and a fund-raising handbill for a church. Binding seems loose, but pages are firmly attached and in nice shape. The glue-stained clippings are haphazardly arranged. Many larger clipping have separated along storage folds. At various times, Denson worked as a janitor, porter, and laborer. He also served as a lieutenant in the Rhode Island Militia's First Separate Company of Infantry (Colored). The scrapbook obviously reflects Denson's interests and include many articles related to: * Black-on-black crime (sexual abuse of children, shootings, razor slashings, murders, drug dealing, cold-finger murders, assaults, domestic violence, confidence scams, etc.); two articles feature murders of white men by blacks. * Race-relations (Negro-baiting politicians including Senator Tillman, comparisons of whites and blacks, racial discontent in Akron and East St. Louis, the last African-American Congressman from the Reconstruction era, an illustrated warning to white mothers not to allow their young daughters to associate with "uncouth colored" boys, Jim Crows laws passed in South Carolina, several lynchings, etc.) * Boxing, especially Jack Johnson (Bat Masterson's editorial condemnation, other editorials about his conviction for violating the Mann Act, his assault upon a man who insulted his wife, etc.) * African-American military service (the 50th anniversary of the 10th Cavalry, the formation of the 92nd Division, the qualities of Negro soldiers, etc.) and much more. Scarce. As of 2017, nothing similar in the trade and only one similar auction record at the Rare Book Hub. While OCLC identifies a number of scrapbooks of prominent or famous African-American held by institutions, there are no records of similar 'common man' scrapbooks.

America's Greatest Scenic Asset. The Columbia Highway Portland, Oregon. Pamphlet title: Portland Oregon featuring The Columbia River Highway.

Portland Chamber of Commerce. Portland, OR. Ca. 1920. - Bird's eye view pictorial map 20 x 31 1/2 inches on sheet 20 3/4 x 32 inches, published folding into a pamphlet, now archivally mounted on linen. Small paper loss at fold intersections now filled and scarcely noticeable, very good condition. A striking poster-size bird's eye view by turn-of-the-twentieth century Oregon artist Frederick Routledge. The map focuses on the Columbia River Gorge, but covers a good part of the state of Oregon from an unusual vantage point looking to the south and east. This early edition differs from later 1920s editions with its particularly vibrant coloring and the use of a sky horizon at the top of the map which emphasises the extent of the eastern reaches of the state. Routledge started illustrating for The West Shore magazine in the late 1800s; when that publication ceased operation he moved to The Oregonian newspaper where some of his first panoramic bird's eye views were published. This pamphlet, issued by the Portland Chamber of Commerce, was a booster publication touting the attractions of Portland - the convention city, the residential city, the industrial city, the financial center - and of the first scenic highway in the United States, the Columbia River Gorge Highway. Construction on this started in 1913; the last section was completed in 1922. The pamphlet was first issued in 1919-1920, with subsequent issues (with minor revisions to the text on the verso of the map) to the mid 1920s. Roads and railways, including the Electric Railway, are marked on the map; the peaks of the Cascades pictured and named along with several lakes in southern Oregon (at top right) and the Larch Mountain Trail; at the lower left is a collage of color views of sights along the Columbia River Highway. A striking view of this beautiful state, with rich coloring and much fascinating detail. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A DULL DAY IN LONDON" BY DORA SIGERSON SHORTER. A PREFATORY NOTE

[London: Privately Printed by Clement Shorter, 1920. Single leaf, issued unbound, measuring 8" X 10 5/8" (26 x 20.4 cm) printed on recto only, all edges trimmed, with watermark of "Royal Vellum" surmounted by a crown, text signed [in print] "T.H." In near-fine condition, in a cloth folding case. First (and only) separate edition of Hardy's sympathetic sketch of the Irish poet and her works. Limited to "Twelve copies" privately printed by Clement K. Shorter. Purdy states: "This brief Prefatory Note was written by Hardy at Clement Shorter's request for a posthumous volume of Dora Sigerson Shorter's sketches. Dora Sigerson married Shorter in 1896 and died 6 January 1918. The note was published in A DULL DAY IN LONDON, by Dora Sigerson, London, 1920, pp. 7-8. There is no evidence for the dating of this leaf. It is not an off-print of the note as published but represents an independent setting of type (presumably, from the paper used, by Eyre & Spottiswoode). Considering Shorter's known propensities as a collector, it is safe to say this private printing preceded the publication of the volume in June 1920. By 1920, however, Hardy had ceased permitting Shorter to print his work in this fashion, and I suspect he was unaware of the existence of this leaf. There was no copy at Max Gate, though Shorter inscribed a copy of he book to Hardy, 24 June 1920." In a general note on Shorter's limited private printings between 1914 and 1916 of six works by Hardy, Purdy notes (p. 349) "the limitation of issue was by no means rigidly adhered to" and "That there were generous overprintings is certain." In his earlier offering of this copy, Hardy expert David Holmes noted: "Our experience has indicated, however, that in the case of the present broadside publication, the limitation statement may be correct or nearly so; this was the only copy to pass through our hands in the past 45 years." PURDY, pp.210-11.

CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, THE [DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI] (1921)

MGM 1920 - Vintage original 11 x 14" (28 x 36 cm.) lobby card, USA. Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, dir: Robert Wiene; Goldwyn. The first great masterpiece of the horror film genre, and a groundwork film of German Expressionist cinema -- with every set handpainted, their distorted lines and shapes echoing the nightmarishness of this famous film. The story is about Caligari, a rather dubious "doctor" who sets up a tent show to exhibit his attraction: Cesare, the 23-year-old somnambulist, always in a trance, who can tell fortunes. Caligari, in fact, has total control over Cesare, and begins ordering him to go commit murders while sleepwalking. This card depicts one of the most famous images in early silent horror film history -- two visitors examine the somnambulist, who is seemingly in a kind of coma, as the sinister Caligari watches on the right. Originally trimmed on its top and right and left sides, and paper conservator Mario Cueva added the required stock paper to fill in the missing blank margins, along with tissue support which went minutely into the image. The card now looks great, and it is an almost impossibly rare piece, so another copy could take a lifetime to find. GOOD-VERY GOOD

Text describing the end boards.Original prints made for the illustration of The Gazette fashionable, one of the finest and most influential twentieth century fashion magazines, celebrating the talent of creators and artists French burgeoning art deco.Famous fashion magazine founded in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, The Gazette fashionable appeared until 1925 with an interruption during the War of 1915 to 1920, due to mobilization of its editor. She is 69 Deliveries from just 2000 copies and is illustrated including 573 color plates and 148 sketches depicting models of fashion designers. Upon publication, these luxury publications "are for bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes" (Françoise Tétart-Vittu "good Gazette of tone" in the fashion dictionary, 2016). Printed on fine laid paper, they use a typeface created specifically for the magazine by Georges Peignot, the Cochin character, taken in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints are made with the technique of metal stencil, enhanced color and some outlined in gold or palladium. The adventure began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel, man of the world and fashion - it has already participated in Femina magazine - decided to found with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff (John's sister, the father of Babar) Gazette good tone in which the subtitle is then "Art, fashions and frivolities." Georges Charensol quotes the editor: "In 1910, he observed, there was no truly artistic fashion magazine and representative of the spirit of his time.
