First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Konzertvereinsorches"In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen's Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition. However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text. He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar's blasphemous defiance of God after Tove's death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king's restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove Music Online. The Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872-1938). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Handbill]: The 'He' Vampire. With No Apologies to Kipling

[No place - Los Angeles?: no publisher. circa 1920]. Small handbill. Approximately 4.25" x 7". Fine. A 29-line poem about women deferring to their pampered husbands, apparently in response to Kipling's poem "The Vampire," a soliloquy about the tender and bruised hearts of men who place their hopes in unfeeling women. The poem mimics some of the tropes and rhyme schemes of the Kipling poem. The final stanzas celebrate the reversal of that state of affairs:"But praise be sung in every tongueFor equal rights thruout the land!At last the men are on the run,Every single mother's son,And we the victory have won!(And they can't understand.)"Presumably the poem was prepared upon some triumph for women's rights, most likely the achievement of the vote, whether at the state or federal level is unclear. While there is no place of publication, our strong suspicion is that it was published in California. OCLC locates no copies. It does locate a single copy of a piece of sheet music by an author with this name published in Los Angeles in 1916. .

An incomparable collection of photographs of American Historical & Political Handkerchiefs

1920 - A photographic record of American historical handkerchiefs, the basis of a book that was never published. This collection of approximately 460 black & white photographs was taken with the intention of Edwin Lefevre, an avid collector, of publishing a book on the subject. He sought help from other collectors - a form letter in the collection states "I am writing a book about American historical handkerchiefs. This includes those used in presidential campaigns or commemorative of battles or notable political, social and educational events or famous persons. . I am writing to you in the hope that you will let me know whether you own or know of any such handkerchiefs." Although Lefevre did receive generous help from various collectors, the book was unpublished as far as we can ascertain with a thorough check of OCLC and auction records.Lefevre was an interesting character, a Panamanian/American journalist, writer and diplomat most noted for his writings on Wall Street business. His books were popular and remain highly collectible. His family lived in Atlantic City and the Wikipedia entry states that in 1908, he and his family moved to East Dorset, Vermont. He collected and apparently dealt in historical handkerchiefs and historical flasks and bottles. We have found one auction record of a "Bandana depicting the Battle of New Orleans, circa 1815-1816" which sold at auction in 2003 for $4200. The provenance is listed as "Purchased September 23, 1937 for $150 from Edwin Lefevre." (Rare Book Hub record number N07867-1013). In the Joseph Downs Collection of Manuscripts and Printed Ephemera at the Winterthur Museum, references to Edwin Lefevre in 1939-40 appear in the papers of Samuel H. Laidacker, an antiques dealer. (Finding_Aids/COL0064.htm) Lefevre wrote an article in 1939, "Washington Historical Handkerchiefs", which appeared in Antiques, 36 (no.1): 14-17. The article was referenced by Raymond B. Clark, Jr. "Historical Handkerchiefs" in 1955 "currently a Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Museum Fellow" who was shortly to receive his MA in early American Culture from the Univ. of Delaware. In the 3rd paragraph, he states "The definitive monograph or book on historical handkerchiefs has not been written." Lefevre has written his name and Atlantic City address inside the cover of the binders. There are his manuscript notations on the verso noting collectors and other research and information. Many handkerchiefs are in the Lefevre's collection, so noted with either "E.L." or "Coll of E.L." on the verso. Other collectors include Henry DuPont, Mrs. J. Insley Blair, Mrs. J. Amory Haskell, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Harry M. Bland, Mrs. G. Bilhuber, and G. H. Lorimer (an early editor of The Saturday Evening Post, whose collection of historic bottles is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.) Often, Lefevre has noted the size, color ways & research on the verso of the photographs. The collection is housed in three large albums and one small one. Much of the first album is devoted to the Declaration of Independence, George Washington & famous battles, and popular subjects. The last third of the album and the full second album are of many presidential candidates and their opponents including Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley, Benjamin Harrison, Tyler, Grover Cleveland, James Garfield, Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, a youngish Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The third album is largely sporting events, kerchiefs for children, including one for teaching sign language. The 450 large photographs measure approx. 9 3/4" w x8", mounted on linen-backed pages measuring approx. 11" w x 8". 12 photos are housed in a smaller binder, the images measuring 6 1/4 x 5", and printed on thick photographic paper. They are in very good condition. The images were professionally photographed by Fred. Hess and Son, of Atlantic City. We estimate the date of the photographs to be the 1930s, on the basis of several things. Firstly the book

Tercentenary of the Landing of the Pilgrims]. By the President of the United States of America. A Proclamation

[U.S. Government], [Washington, D.C.:] 1920 - 1 pp. December 21, 1920 marked the Tercentenary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620; Wilson issued this proclamation which read: "My Fellow-Countrymen: December 21 next will mark the Tercentenary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620. The day will be becomingly celebrated at Plymouth under the auspices of the Plymouth Pilgrim Tercentenary Commission, and at other localities in Massachusetts. While this is proper and praiseworthy, it seems to me that the influences which the ideals and principles of the Pilgrims with respect to civil liberty and human rights have had upon the formation and growth of our institutions and upon our development and progress as a nation merit more than a local expression of our obligation, and make fitting a nation-wide observance of the day. I therefore suggest and request that the 21st of December next be observed throughout the Union with special patriotic services in order that the great events in American history that have resulted from the landing of these hardy and courageous navigators and colonists may be accentuated to the present generation of American citizens. Especially do I recommend that the day be fittingly observed in the universities, colleges, and schools of our country to the end that salutary and patriotic lessons may be drawn from the fortitude and perseverance and the ideals of this little band of sturdy men and women who established on this continent the first self determined government based on the great principle of just law and its equal application to all, and thus planted the seed from which has sprung a mighty nation." The Proclamation [1572] was dated on 4th of August of that year and signed in print by Wilson, counter-signed by Brainbridge Colby, the Secretary of State. Scarce. Not in NUC. OCLC nor any of the major University or research library catalogues. A single copy sold in 1990 for $575. A near fine copy, faint mail fold and 1/4" expertly repaired closed tear; stamp of the Chief Clerk dated Aug. 17, 1920 on upper margin. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Miracle Mongers and Their Methods.

New York: E.P. Dutton, 1920. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Raymond Gallatovich Best wishes and good luck Houdini Feb 5/ 1921." The recipient was a fellow illusionist and magician Raymond Gallatovich. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box and chemise. Harry Houdini was a unique figure in the history of entertainment... a hero of legend and folklore." Following the death of his mother in 1913, Houdini began to investigate spiritualism and "soon became an all-out crusader against it. Early in 1924 he began lecturing throughout the United States on fraudulent mediums. In city after city he attended seances in disguise, exposing frauds on the spot and sometimes securing their arrest, aided by his personal squad of detectives. The raids brought him huge publicity as well as a million dollars in lawsuits." At his death in 1927, "he was buried in a brass replica of the iron casket, his head pillowed on a bundle of his mother's letters to him" (ANB). The legendary magician and illusionist Harry Houdini turns a critical eye to the astonishing claims of those in his own profession in his work Miracle Mongers and Their Methods. Using personal research and observations, Houdini reveals the cunning techniques employed by fire-eaters, sword swallowers, and other masters of deception to mystify and amaze audiences around the world.
