Dr. Mabuse der Spieler. [Ullstein-Bücher. Eine Sammlung zeitgenössischer Romane]. First German edition.

Illustrierter Pappband, kl-8, 249 [3] S. - Kanten berieben, Kapital etwas beschädigt, Papier gebräunt, Gelenke etwas gelockert/ hard board, small 8vo, 249 pp, 3 np sheets -worn, crown with little damage, paper browned, hinge slightly shaken. The american copyright is mentioned with 1920 actually the book is printed later here *Die zwei in der Südsee* published 1922 is advertised. First Edition, preceding all others. One of the most important film sources of the twentieth century, basis for Fritz Lang's 1922 silent masterpiece, Dr. Mabuse the Gambler. Dr. Mabuse was one of the earliest examples of film noir characterization, and remained an obsession with Lang until the end of his film career. Katastroofid : 1919-1920 (Catastrophes : 1919-1920) [Poetry Collection]

Auringo, Tallinn 1920 - Estonian language. Octavo 15 x 23 cm. Weight 80 gr. Wrappers, 63 [1] pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Small creases across cover corners, repaired upper right corner of front cover (minor corner missing piece was replaced with triangle paper from the inner side), right and bottom edge of front cover show very slight fraying; internally perfect unread copy with uncut pages. The third collection of verses relates to author's early Expressionist period of creation, and poems included here imbued with sensuality and enjoyment glorification, which had broken existing traditions and morality of literature. In modernist urban descriptions the problem of the poor and the rich is raised by author. He depicts cities in the daytime and at night: the first is connected with working class people, the factory proletariat, and the latter with prostitutes, buying and selling human beings. Catastrophic descriptions of the world's disgust and rebellion sound very vividly. The impending global Catastrophe passes through the verses. Author shows his protesting, militant, active attitude, a wish for a better time and era, created by the class of the poor. The position of Johannes Vares-Barbarus (1890–1946) in Estonian history and culture is contradictory. On the one hand, he was a remarkable doctor of the name of Vares, on the other hand, a poet named Barbarus, whose modernistic poems were not always appreciated. Moreover, in the 1940s he was one of the leading figures in the Sovietization of Estonia. That's why his figure and poetry having received so much attention. He published fourteen collections of verse, which style varied greatly during his career. After neo-romanist debut, followed expressionist verses, which gradually gave way to the avant-garde collections Geomeetriline inimene (The Geometrical Man, 1924) and Multiplitseerit inimene(Multiplied Man, 1927) followed the trends of French modernism and cubism and considered his best works. From then on poetry took more realistic turn, antibourgeois attitudes and leftist views became increasingly evident. After the fall of the bourgeois regime in Estonia he became president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR (1940-46). Afraid of the NKVD, he committed suicide in 1946. Constructivist graphic cover design of the book created by Aleksander Mülber (1897-1931). Unique and talented artist of Ants Laikmaa Atelier School, during his study he created paintings in national romanticism style, later turned to Expressionism. Finally cultivated more rationalist, playful form of expressionism identified as cubo-futurism. Today little remains of his artworks. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Portugiesische Briefe. Die Briefe der Marianna Alcoforado, übertragen von R. M. Rilke. Nachwort von F. Bergemann. 21.-25. Tausend (= Insel-Bücherei, Nr. 74).

Insel ohne Jahr [1920], Leipzig - 49 S., 1 Blatt. Orig.-Pappband. BATTLE OF DUMLUPINAR, TURKEY: BÜYÜK TAARRUZ VE BA?KUMANDAN MEYDAN MUHAREBESI [GREAT OFFENSIVE AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF BATTLE].

[Probably Istanbul or Ankara, Turkey, late s or 1930s]. 1920 - Lithography on thinner paper 4 x 55 cm (soft folds with small loss of image in the folds, old repaired tears verso, slightly-age toned and water stained, otherwise in a good condition). A fascinating, extremely rare Turkish 20th century map by a military historian Hakki Tümerdem shows the development of the Battle of Dumlup?nar, the last battle in the Greco-Turkish War in 1922. - A magnificent map in Turkish language shows the development of the Battle of Dumlup?nar, fought from August 26 to August 30 1922, between the Turkish Army and the Greek Army of Asia Minor. It was also called Field Battle of the Commander-in-Chief or Dumlup?nar (Meydan) Muharebesi or Ba?kumandanl?k Meydan Muharebesi in Turkish. The blue lines represent Greek troops and red lines the Turkish ones. The battle, which was the last battle in the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), as part of the Turkish War of Independence, forced the Greeks to leave Anatolia by mid September. The Armistice of Mudanya was signed by Turkey, Italy, France and Great Britain on 11 October 1922. The map was made by an author and a teacher of military history (harp tarihi muallimi) Hakki Tu?merdem. Tu?merdem was an author of several books on Turkish military history, published mostly in 1930s. We could not trace any other examples of the map on the market nor in institutions worldwide.

The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and... her line was always impeccable... As an interpretive artist Pavlova probably, even today, remains unsurpassed. She was supreme in roles requiring feminine coquetry and light comedy; she excelled in lyrical and poetic roles in which her fluid, expressive arms and hands were remarkable; and she could be deeply moving in dramatic and tragic roles such as Nikia and Giselle. What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 5, pp. 125-126. Laura Knight, the first female English artist to be elected to full membership in the Royal Academy. She is well-recognized for her work in the genre of ballet. "During 1920 and 1921 Laura met, and painted backstage, some of the most famous ballet dancers of the day from Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. Her subjects included Lydia Lopokova, Anna Pavlova, and the dance teacher Enrico Cecchetti." Wikipedia.. Sheet size 355 mm. x 218 mm. (14" x 8.5"). On laid paper. With preparatory sketch of a dancer (in all likelihood Pavlova) in fluid motion to verso. Provenance: Alister Mathews, art dealer in Bournemouth, England. Slightly worn and creased; small edge tear.

KRITIK. NRS 1 (FEB 1920) - 9 (MARCH 1921) [NEARLY COMPLETE, LACKING ONLY THE FINAL ISSUE]

Vienna: [Der Kval](1920-1921). 1st edition. Bound in Period boards with all original paper covers bound in, tall 8vo, 32 pages per issue [total of 288 pages here]. In Yiddish, with "Kritik" in dramatic modernist typeface. Moshe Zilberg (1884-1942) "was living in Vilna where he was arrested for belonging to the Bund (1912) and sat in a prison cell together with Dovid Eynhorn. After being freed from prison, he was forced to leave Russia. Until WWI he lived in Cracow and Lemberg. Over the years 1918-1923, he lived in Vienna where he was a Hebrew teacher and one of the editors of the publishing house of "Der kval" (The source) . He was also editor of the monthly journal Kritik (Critic) --ten issues appeared, February 1920-April 1921--around which assembled the writers: Moyshe Grosman-Tsimerman, Mendl Zinger, Meylekh Ravitsh, Dr. Meylekh Khmelnitski, and A. M. Fuks, among others. In 1923 he returned to Vilna. He subsequently served as co-editor (with N. Mayzil) of Literarishe bleter (Literary leaves) in Warsaw (1926) , and he became an internal contributor to Ekspres (Express) in Warsaw--first issue, January 3, 1927. At the beginning of WWII (September 1939) , he escaped from Warsaw to Bialystok, later settled in Vilna, suffered enormously from want, made several unsuccessful attempts to save himself from the Nazis, and then was murdered in Ponary.... Zilberg had a deep understanding and stern attitude toward artistic literature. He would revise and polish his stories, and out of necessity did not have sufficient time to concentrate on his own original creations; his writing talent was used primarily on translations. Falling strongly under the influence of Perets's struggle for national progress and against assimilation, he wrote his series of articles entitled: "Vos ikh hob aykh tsu zogn" (What I have to say to you) , running in several issues of Kritik; the articles aroused a strong reaction among younger writers with whom he remained in close contact for many years. " Additionally, Moyshe Gross (Moshe Gross-Zimmermann) "was a cofounder of M. Zilburg's monthly magazine Kritik (Critic) , in which he published a series of articles entitled 'Form-problemen in der yidisher literatur' (Problems of form in Yiddish literature) " (Translated from article by Zalmen Reyzen in Yidishe Leksikon, vol. 1) .         South. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917

1920 - Folding map, numerous illustrations. Second US edition. 8vo., cloth. New York, Macmillan. With a most unusual forged presentation inscription, by the putative recipient on the front free endpaper ?To Byron Khun de Prorok Laleham College, England in grateful thanks for his efforts, & of those of his school companions for the gift of sledge No. 6 that went on with Spencer-Smith until his death from exhaustion. (?) 184 degrees - (?) Hill 149 degrees March 9, 1916. Sincerely yours Ernest Shackleton Nov 1920? Byron Khun de Prorok, a bogus self-publicising Count of American Polish stock, apparently brought up in Pennsylvania and educated in Geneva, made several expeditions in North Africa, mainly in the Sahara region. He presented papers to The Royal Geographical Society, who eventually ended his membership for exceeding their fantasy quota, his involving quests for the lost city of Atlantis and King Solomon?s mines. He published four moderately successful populist books about his expeditions and archaeology, all of which earned the most scathing reviews in the specialist journals ? ?From an archaeological standpoint this work is non-existent. As a reference book it is useless? (American Journal of Archaeology); ?As the author truly says (p. 36), ? the germ of enthusiasm is virulent?; it devastates spelling, scholarship, historical perspective impartially, and infects the reader too with a delirious inconsequence, the nightmare feeling that it doesn't much matter what happens next? (The Geographical Journal) The only narrative which fits the facts of this book is that Khun de Prorok fabricatedit as evidence of his intimacy with the great of the expedition world: nevertheless there are some odd questions about it, such as the invention of ?Laleham College, England? ? Thomas Arnold?s first prep school was in Laleham House, but it was demolished in the 1860s, and Laleham School (a special needs school) in Ramsgate is an unlikely candidate. We are very grateful to the Royal Geographical Society for having supplied samples of Prorok?s hand, confirming that this inscription is by him. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
