Original drawing in graphite on paper of Anna Pavlova en pointe. Signed in full by the artist at lower right and titled "Pavlova" at lower left

The most celebrated dancer of her time, "[Pavlova's] technique was so perfect that it concealed technique. her arabesque and pas de bourrée have rarely been equaled, and... her line was always impeccable... As an interpretive artist Pavlova probably, even today, remains unsurpassed. She was supreme in roles requiring feminine coquetry and light comedy; she excelled in lyrical and poetic roles in which her fluid, expressive arms and hands were remarkable; and she could be deeply moving in dramatic and tragic roles such as Nikia and Giselle. What made her performances unique, however, was not so much her technical mastery or even her talent at characterization; it was the emotion she poured into her performances, her incomparable stage presence - in short, the power of her personality." The International Encyclopedia of Dance, Vol. 5, pp. 125-126. Laura Knight, the first female English artist to be elected to full membership in the Royal Academy. She is well-recognized for her work in the genre of ballet. "During 1920 and 1921 Laura met, and painted backstage, some of the most famous ballet dancers of the day from Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. Her subjects included Lydia Lopokova, Anna Pavlova, and the dance teacher Enrico Cecchetti." Wikipedia.. Sheet size 355 mm. x 218 mm. (14" x 8.5"). On laid paper. With preparatory sketch of a dancer (in all likelihood Pavlova) in fluid motion to verso. Provenance: Alister Mathews, art dealer in Bournemouth, England. Slightly worn and creased; small edge tear.

Vienna: [Der Kval](1920-1921). 1st edition. Bound in Period boards with all original paper covers bound in, tall 8vo, 32 pages per issue [total of 288 pages here]. In Yiddish, with "Kritik" in dramatic modernist typeface. Moshe Zilberg (1884-1942) "was living in Vilna where he was arrested for belonging to the Bund (1912) and sat in a prison cell together with Dovid Eynhorn. After being freed from prison, he was forced to leave Russia. Until WWI he lived in Cracow and Lemberg. Over the years 1918-1923, he lived in Vienna where he was a Hebrew teacher and one of the editors of the publishing house of "Der kval" (The source) . He was also editor of the monthly journal Kritik (Critic) --ten issues appeared, February 1920-April 1921--around which assembled the writers: Moyshe Grosman-Tsimerman, Mendl Zinger, Meylekh Ravitsh, Dr. Meylekh Khmelnitski, and A. M. Fuks, among others. In 1923 he returned to Vilna. He subsequently served as co-editor (with N. Mayzil) of Literarishe bleter (Literary leaves) in Warsaw (1926) , and he became an internal contributor to Ekspres (Express) in Warsaw--first issue, January 3, 1927. At the beginning of WWII (September 1939) , he escaped from Warsaw to Bialystok, later settled in Vilna, suffered enormously from want, made several unsuccessful attempts to save himself from the Nazis, and then was murdered in Ponary.... Zilberg had a deep understanding and stern attitude toward artistic literature. He would revise and polish his stories, and out of necessity did not have sufficient time to concentrate on his own original creations; his writing talent was used primarily on translations. Falling strongly under the influence of Perets's struggle for national progress and against assimilation, he wrote his series of articles entitled: "Vos ikh hob aykh tsu zogn" (What I have to say to you) , running in several issues of Kritik; the articles aroused a strong reaction among younger writers with whom he remained in close contact for many years. " Additionally, Moyshe Gross (Moshe Gross-Zimmermann) "was a cofounder of M. Zilburg's monthly magazine Kritik (Critic) , in which he published a series of articles entitled 'Form-problemen in der yidisher literatur' (Problems of form in Yiddish literature) " (Translated from article by Zalmen Reyzen in Yidishe Leksikon, vol. 1) .         Women][Sports] Photo Album Depicting a Camp Created by the Founder of Women's Field Hockey in the United States.

late 1920s-1935, Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania And Brussels, Belgium - 5" x 7½". String-tied, patterned paper over boards. 92 pages with 163 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Most photos measure 2½" x 3½", a few are larger and around a third are captioned. Album good: heavy edge wear, patch of surface loss to front cover and lacking most of backstrip but still firmly held together by string tie; photos generally near fine. This album documents some of the efforts of a woman who was instrumental in the development of women's sports in the United States. Constance Applebee, a native of England, introduced field hockey to the United States in 1901. She co-founded the American Field Hockey Association, was the director of athletics for Bryn Mawr, and in 1924 created the first American magazine devoted to women's sports, The Sportswoman. In 1922, Applebee founded the Pocono Hockey Camp at Camp Tegawitha which was held each summer for the next 72 years and included top coaches from around the world. She also taught lacrosse at the camp and the U. S. Women's Lacrosse Association was founded there in 1931. This album begins at that camp, probably in the late 1920s and there are at least five photos of Applebee. In addition to portraits of the athletes and hockey and lacrosse shots, the women are seen rowing, engaged in archery, riding horses and simply having fun. There's a photo of Anne Pugh, captain of the women's lacrosse national team in 1934, and for whom the eponymous Bryn Mawr Award for Athletic Excellence, Sportsmanship and Leadership is named. Also shown is Anne Townsend, another pioneer of American women's hockey and lacrosse and the captain of the women's national field hockey team for many years. The album then jumps to Belgium with shots of the 1935 Brussels International Exposition. Around one third of the album consists of travel shots in and around Brussels. Amidst these photos are a number related to an international hockey tournament. There are several team photos as well as more than one where Nazi flags can be seen and at least two with players giving Nazi salutes. We have been unable to determine exactly what competition this was or whether Applebee made the trip. The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women deemed Applebee a "Foremother of Sport for Women. " She continued to coach and play until the age of 96, ultimately training thousands of young women in lacrosse and field hockey. An album of fiercely spirited women brought together by one of the matriarchs of women's sports in the United States. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers.         [Photo Album]: Panama Canal and the Coast of Chile

Panama Canal Zone and Chile, 1920. Near Fine. Folio. Measuring 12" x 14". Brown leather album with gilt and blind stamped decorations. Contains 274 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 5", with a few scattered captions. Album has a cracked front hinge, rubbing on the leather, and waviness thus good only with near fine photographs.A photo album kept during a cruise through the Panama Canal and down the coast of South America to Chile around 1920. The album begins with a trip through the Panama Canal which had officially opened in 1914. Photos of the deforested banks of the area, a few inland scenes, and nearby towns are seen in the section which shows travel through the canal. The mechanism of the canal can also be seen in amateur snapshots taken while the ship passed through. The trip continues down the coast of South America. Penciled captions appear on a few occasions identifying the cities of Pisco, Peru; Antofagasta, Chile; and Tocopilla, Chile. The photos from the various ports and cities visited show the local people of the town, with an emphasis on children, as well as the towns themselves. Here the people of South America are seen on horseback herding animals and shopping at the town markets. One photo shows a man on a dirt road, on the back of a donkey going into town. The changing infrastructure of the area can also be seen with photos of recently added railway stations and cars juxtaposed next to villagers who continued to use the traditional methods of transportation, such as the aforementioned donkey. The South American coast is seen here both from the boat and on foot. The compiler ventured outside of town to document the natural beauty of the countryside including a hike into the Andes and fishing expeditions. Many of the photos show the onboard life of the travelers fraternizing with crew members between stops, as well as photos of them sunning on the decks, ship's rigging, and passengers they befriended along the way.An extensive collection of photographs depicting South American travel and relatively early documentation of the Panama Canal.

        This Side of Paradise

Original green cloth. Near fine. Half morocco case. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. Fitzgerald's first novel, one of only 3000 copies. Presentation copy inscribed on the title page: "For Kenneth Brightbill from F. Scott Fitzgerald April 30th, 1921." Brightbill and Fitzgerald seem likely to have been classmates, perhaps at the Newman School in New Jersey. Fitzgerald inscribed several of his early books to Brightbill. This Side of Paradise, "when it was first published was considered a revelation of new morality of the young in the early Jazz Age; and it made Fitzgerald famous. The novel's hero, Amory Blaine, is a handsome, spoiled young man who attends Princeton, becomes involved in literary activities and has several ill-fated romances. A portrait of the Lost Generation, the novel addresses Fitzgerald's later theme of love distorted by social climbing and greed" (Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature) Fitzgerald was still at university when he submitted the manuscript, then titled The Romantic Egoist, Scribner's. This Side of Paradise was published on 26 March 1920. An immediate success, the book went through fourteen printings by 1922, helping to launch Fitzgerald's literary career. The public loved the book, but the president of Princeton was not as pleased. John Grier Hibben wrote, "I cannot bear to think that our young men are merely living four years in a country club and spending their lives wholly in a spirit of calculation and snobbishness." This is an excellent early Fitzgerald presentation copy.

- sehr seltene EA in bemerkenswert gutem Erhaltungszustand!         [Photo Album]: Florida Photo Album

Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Flexible black cloth boards with gilt "Scrap Album" on the front board, string-tied. Bookseller label from Chicago. Clipping about Florida affixed on first leaf, followed by 119 photographs. Various sizes, a few detached, slight wear to the boards, near fine. A photo album of better than average quality photographs, mostly of scenes in Florida between 1920 and 1924. All but a dozen or two of the photographs appear to be from Florida, mostly around Daytona and Ormand Beach. Most revolve around a single family who seemed to visit Florida annually, and display leisure activities (swimming in both ocean and rivers, fishing, beach scenes, horse-racing, children playing) and pictures of scenery including newly built vacation houses, girds laid out for development, and a sea shore hotel. A handful of images at the end of the album exhibit the family in northern winter scenes.
