        World War I mail from a German Prisoner of War held at the American prison camp at Krasnaya-Retchka, Siberia during the Allied intervention in Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution

      Vladivostok, Siberia, 1919. Unbound. Very good. Envelope only, no letter. The envelope is addressed to Anna Raumgarten, Altona-Elbe, Germany. The return address reads, "Prisoner of war Mail / Vladivostok / Siberia / American prison camp / Martin Prigge / No. 326." It bears a small steel circular postmark that reads, "U.S. Postal Agency Siberia, Oct 2 10 AM 1919," and a type C-5 Unit Censor handstamp that reads, "A. E. F. Siberia / Censored / Sig ............." The censor stamp has been initialed in red ink. The envelope is in very nice shape. In November 1918, a company of the U.S. 27th Infantry Regiment assumed control of the Russian prison camp at Krashnaya-Retchka (Red River) which was located about 10 miles southeast of Khabarovs. The company was augmented by command and medical personnel, with Lieutenant Colonel Morrow serving as the camp commandant. Morrow found camp conditions to be abysmal and camp records nearly non-existant. Two-thirds of the 2,000 Germans, Austians, and Hungarians held in the camp were officers. 1,800 of them were incapcitated to varying degrees by influenza, about 450 badly so. The Americans immediately began to reorgainze the camp and set the prisoners to work using Russian supplies and equipment to build barracks, establish a boiler plant, install water and electrical systems, create a mess hall and hospital, begin barber and laundry operations, organize an orchestra and athletic teams, and much more. Almost needless to say, the prisoners were overjoyed to be treated humanely. Later during the intervention when the 27th Infantry was reassigned to Verkhne-Udinsk, one thousand prisoners volunteered to fight alongside the unit against any and all forces without pay. Not much is known about Prigge, however other cards and envelopes he sent from various Russian prisoner of war camps exist dating back to 1915. While the Allied intervention in Russia was all but forgotten in the West, it remained an open wound in the mnd of Soviet leadership throughout the Cold War. This remarkable envelope documents one of the least known facets of that conflict. All mail related to the American intervention in Siberia is scarce. Mail from the prison camp at Krashnaya-Retchka is rare as are signed examples of the C-5 censor stamp. Van Dam's Postal History of the A.E.F. notes only eight extant examples of American prison camp mail from Siberia, all of which are preprinted official POW cards. Rare first edition of the first Ghent pharmacopoeia, compiled by order of the city senate by three physicians in service of the city: Franciscus vanden Vivere, Johannes Stalins, Gislenus Rissoens. It gives hundreds of recipes for medicines for a wide variety of ailments. An appendix gives the city statutes concerning doctors, surgeons and pharmacologists. The preliminaries and back matter contain numerous verses in honour of the publication.With a 1919 note on the back paste-down and a few small manuscript corrections to the text. With a corner of the title-page cut out and replaced, not affecting the text, and 2 sheets very slightly browned, but generally in fine condition. Binding very good.

        The Works of Thomas Hardy.

      London: Macmillan & Company, 1919-20. The Works of Thomas Hardy, signed limited edition. Octavo, thirty-seven volumes, bound in contemporary three quarters dark blue morocco, gilt tooling and titles to the spine. The Mellstock edition, limited to five hundred copies. In near fine condition. A very nice attractively bound set. Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain, such as those from his native South West England. While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, therefore, he gained fame as the author of such novels as Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). During his lifetime, Hardy's poetry was acclaimed by younger poets (particularly the Georgians) who viewed him as a mentor. After his death his poems were lauded by Ezra Pound, W. H. Auden and Philip Larkin.

      - Basrah, printed and engraved at the Government Press, [1919]. Folio. Original brown cloth, front cover illustrated and lettered in gilt (in English), rear cover lettered in Arabic; pp. [104] hundreds of photographic illustrations, text in English and Arabic; only minor rubbing to the binding in places only, internally clean and fresh. This is an intriguing document of Iraq during the Great War, with excursions into Central Arabia, making this 'the first photographic book to appear on Najd' (Badr El-Hage). In 1918 Harry St John Philby ended his service with the British administration in Baghdad from 1915 to 1917 by travelling through the interior of the Arabian peninsula as head of a mission to Ibn Saud. During the nine-month journey of the Nejd he travelled some 4000 kilometres. He selected from over 600 photos taken in preparing this rare and beautiful publication. The second edition is most likely merely a re-issue of the original sheets of 1918 with a different colour of cloth chosen for the binding. The volume is divided into four sections of photos: Groups and Portraits, Local Events, Views and A Tour through Central Arabia. One photo shows 'the tourist' (Philby) amidst his Arabic-British escort. The Arabist, explorer, writer and British colonial intelligence officer (spy) known as Jack Philby or Sheikh Abdullah was stationed during the First World War with the British Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force in Baghdad, which organized the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire and secured the oil flields of the Shatt al Arab and Basrah for the needs of the Navy. He was sent on a mission to Ibn Saud, whom he favoured as the future King of the Arabs. He later became an important mediator between the house of Ibn Saud and Western oil companies.       Gurlitt Presse, Berlin 1919 - Elephant folio. Set of eight 20" x 25" lithographs housed in a portfolio decorated paper over boards in quarter vellum gilt. Each lithograph is laid into a thick card matte, some of which show signs of foxing or light stains. The outer portfolio has splits along some folds, with wear and some staining, and the title sheet is edgeworn and foxed. Overall very good, the lithographs are near fine or better.The lithographs depict Anita Berber in various erotic poses taken from her theatrical personas, with hand-tinting added to several of the images. Of a total of 80 sets, this is number XIII [13] of only 40 sets Signed by Berend and highlighted in watercolor by her on four of the lithographs. Most of the sets are alleged to have been destroyed after the work was banned; only one other set with hand-tinting is known to survive.Berend was the first female artist to be inducted into the Berlin Session movement. Her specialty at this time was in creating prints of actors and dancers. According to *The Seven Addictions and Five Professions of Anita Berber, Weimar Berlin's "Priestess of Depravity"* by Mel Gordon:"Berend sketched eight canvases of the decadent dance personality. Each picture captured Anita in a new and more provocative pose. There was the terrified child in a short hoop-skirt which fell just below her naval, directing the viewer's eye straight to the startled figure's exposed vagina and lower torso; the smiling adolescent, bagging her nightgown from top to bottom, to display her boyish breasts as well as her pubic hair and a single silk stocking; the confident fashion-plate sprawled across a chair; the inviting whore, sensationally naked except for an open black overcoat, rolled up stockings and high heeled pumps; the saucy revue-girl at her makeup table, tonguing a phallic-looking oyster; a hard-faced dancer, in Parisian attire, expertly pleasuring herself with her right leg thrown over the arm of a chair; a beckoning bride, wearing only dark hosiery, in a curtained chamber room; and a naked openmouthed showgirl, seated on her fur wraps."The Gurlitt Gallery Press privately printed 80 luxurious sets of the 'Anita Berber Portfolio' in the summer of 1919. Berend hand-printed and signed 40 of the oversize lithographic parcels and assumed that because of their fantastic cost and tiny print run, the series would probably elude Berlin's hard-pressed censoring boards. She was wrong. The entire Portfolio was labeled pornographic and quickly suppressed. Ten years later, the drawings reappeared in Viennese erotic encyclopedias and moral histories of the period. They would be among the most enduring images of Anita Berber between the time of her death and the beginning of Nazi rule."Anita Berber, beautiful, androgynous, and bi-sexual, was described by some as "Europe's first postmodern woman." She acted in Expressionist films directed by Richard Oswald and co-starring Conrad Veidt. Along with Sebastian Droste she caused a sensation with their series "The Dances of Depravity, Horror, and Ecstasy." She ruled the cabaret and casinos of Berlin during the period of the Weimer Republic, inspiring the careers of Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl, and performing exotic dances "radiantly naked except for an elegant sable wrap, a pet monkey hanging from her neck, and a silver brooch packed with cocaine." She died tragically (if not surprisingly) in 1928 at the age of 29, a few months after collapsing on the cabaret floor of a Beirut club while performing abroad. In 1991 Otto Dix's portrait of her appeared as a German postage stamp.A collection of rare and superb images of the devotedly decadent Berber.         World War One photograph album documenting life in the 13th Infantry Regiment Band

      Camp Merritt, New Jersey, 1919. Album. Very good. This 11" x 7" album contains over 265 photographs documenting life in the 13th Infantry Regiment Band while stationed at Camp Merritt after the armistice. The photos, range in size from 2" x 3" to 7" x 10". Some of the pages are captioned, and many band member photos are identified by last names. The album, leaves and photographs are all in very nice shape. The album includes a group photograph of the band members with their instruments posing in front of two barracks buildings and a second group photograph titled, "13th Infantry, Camp Merritt N.J. May 1919" that shows about 160 men seated and standing on bleachers. There are about 110 posed photographs of individual solders; in about 65 of images, the men are holding their instrument. Other photographs show the men relaxing in camp and visiting with women. One interesting image shows a soldier using a giant megaphone to make an announcement, and another shows two soldiers standing in the doorway of a Cresskill, New Jersey diner. Three photographs are of "Warships on the Hudson," and there are a number taken while on leave including one of a baseball game at the Polo Grounds. The 13th Infantry Regiment was assigned to the 8th Division, one of the last Regular Army divisions to activate during World War One. Only several of the division's units had arrived in France prior to the Armistice, which was signed while the 13th was still at sea. It never landed in France, but instead was recalled to the States and garrisoned at Fort Merritt, New Jersey. Military band photograph collections from World War One are very scarce. As of 2017, OCLC show none being held by institutions, and none are for sale in the trade. There are no auction records listed at ABPC, the Rare Book Hub, or Worthpoint.

A fascinating photograph album compiled by a U.S. Navy engineer, a member of the service expedition to the American naval radio stations in Cordova and Seward in Alaska in the summer and autumn of 1919. The party travelled to Alaska from the Mare Island naval base near San Francisco on board U.S.S. Saturn and at first worked on construction and renovations of the Mile 7 (Eyak) and Mile 14 (Hanscom) naval radio stations, parts of the Cordova Station located along the route of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway. After that the working party constructed cottages at the Naval Radio Station in Seward on the Kenai Peninsula. The first photograph in the album is a group portrait of the members of the "Radio Party at Childs Glacier" near Cordova, taken by a prominent Alaskan photographer and a resident of Cordova, Eric A. Hegg (1867-1947). These are followed by a series of views of the Cordova radio stations at Mile 7 (several general views, including the flooded grounds, a bridge washout, the surrounding mountains, a nearly waterfall, a flume for domestic water, and Lake Eyak) and at Mile 14 (including a work party, wood crib and radio towers, a picture of the station taken from the top of one of the towers, several views of cottage construction and completed houses, and the engine and operation buildings). Several photos show the Copper River and Northwestern Railroad: a trestle bridge at Cordova, another bridge at Childs Glacier (with distant and close up views), the railway out of Cordova, the party on a train at Mile 50, and others. There are also views of Cordova (of 1st Street, the wharf, Cordova Bay, the group members "in front of Kenney Holdens in Cordova"), McKinley Lake, Scott Glacier, and Sheridan Glacier. Photos of the expedition in Seward begin with a large group portrait of the party members taken in the city. A number of images depict the naval radio station (including a general view of the grounds, a closer view of the radio tower, and different stages of construction dated 24th of September, and 1, 3rd, and 17th of October 1919). Other images show views of Seward and its environs, "Haymaking in Alaska", a copper mine in Latouche, cabins near Roosevelt Lake, U.S.S. Saturn near Seward, and the party members on board. Included in these are photos showing the "black gang" of the ship, and party members having meals, hiking, doing laundry, crossing a glacier stream, and watching a boxing match; several members are named in captions. Also included are a number of photos of the Alaska Railroad, its engines and railcars, and portraits of the group onboard. Real photo postcards depict a part of Prince William Sound, the wreck of S.S. Olympia from December 1910, two winter scenes in Cordova and Childs Glacier by John E. Thwaites, the Mariposa wreck, views of Cordova and Mile 7 by C.F. Rosswog, and of Seward. Color printed postcards show views of Seward, Petersburg, the Treadwell Mines, Skagway, Juneau, Valdez, and the Muir Glacier. A thorough and substantial photograph album documenting the development of early naval radio communication in Alaska just after World War I.

Douglas Richardson, Mr. Charles Conder at their studios, Gordon Bdgs., Flinders Lane [between Queen and Market Streets] on Thursday, Friday and Saturday the 13, 14, 15 of March, 1890. 11 a.m - 5 p.m.' (small section of surface loss towards the left edge, otherwise in good condition. 2. a cut signature of Streeton with his 49 Murphy St. South Yarra address (the Streetons' home after their return from London in 1921), ink on thick paper, 33 x 65 mm, a few spots of foxing but clean and legible. The invitation to the viewing of Streeton's, Conder's and Richardson's pictures is unrecorded in Australian collections. This splendid photo album by one of the leading Indian photographers of the Raj opens with a full-length portrait of the Maharadja of Baroda, His Highness Sir Sayadji Rao Gaekwar, followed by his wife, the Maharanee, and several external and internal views of their residence, Laxmi Vilas Palace, one of the largest private dwellings of the time, four times the size of Buckingham Palace. Other photos depict palaces, Baroda High School, public buildings (some not quite finished yet), an equestrian statue of the Maharadja, a bird's eye view of the city, the main street, ancient monuments and temples. Maharaja Sayaji Rao III, who took the throne in 1875, modernized and developed Baroda, establishing compulsory primary education, a library system and the University of Baroda. Vadodara, as the capital is correctly called now, was thriving under his reign which is considered the golden age of Maratha rule in the state. Gopinath K. Devare, whose son became the first and an importat cinematographer was the foremost Indian photographer. He commissioned a landmark in Mumbai in 1930, Devare Tower.       Michigan. 1919. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 7" x 10". String-tied red leatherette album. Contains 211 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs as well as some color photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2.5" and 4" x 6", with captions. Very good album with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album compiled by Michigan family depicting their family history beginning with Edna Lang and Lee Jurzek in 1917. The album appears to have been compiled by a grandchild in the 1970s and follows the Lang-Jurzek family from 1917 until 1971. The first page is captioned "government assignment in World War I" and shows the headquarters of the aviation department of the American Expeditionary Forces as well as a man posed by a plane and a view from a ship. The next page is captioned "L.J. Jurzek on assignment in Paris, France World War I" and shows men in an office huddled around piles of books and paper. Following this is a section entitled "Edna Lang and Lee Jurzek courtship 1918" and shows the young couple and their friends swimming, hiking, and going to parties. They are seen visiting family between 1919 and 1920 including Edna's father Jacob Lang and her stepmother Minnie Lang. Shortly after Edna and Lee moved into their own home in Ferndale, Michigan with their 16 -month-old daughter, Marjorie and four-month-old daughter Loretta. Later they have a son named Richard and the two children are photographed around their family homes and on visits around Michigan. Photos from a 1930 fishing trip are seen here with images of Lee holding his catch and men on a small boat. The family visited Washington DC and is photographed by government buildings and in Arlington Cemetery. The 1930s see the children growing up and more family parties with many picnics and outdoor summer get-togethers. One section of photos shows Lee's brother, Julian and his daughter June Pike who was the Tournament of Roses Queen and is photographed on her float.The album jumps forward to 1958 and follows Marjorie, referred to as Marge, and her husband Dean Lenheiser with their children. Marge and Dean took a trip to Hawaii in 1966 and are photographed at a luau and on the beach. Their family is photographed at a father's day picnic, swimming, and spending time at their Michigan home. One section shows color photographs of the Lenheisers and their friends vacationing on Lake Erie. Following these are photos of Marge, her mother Edna, and her son Reese posed around their family home. The final page is from a trip to Mexico City in 1971.An interesting collection following generations of a Michigan family. .

Original silver-pictorial dark blue cloth lightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities; front cover lightly marked near the leading edge; endpapers foxed; acidic paper uniformly discoloured as ever with this first impression; a few tiny edge tears, and a short tear to the map near the stub, expertly sealed; an excellent copy. Provenance: from the personal collection of Richard Walter Richards, one of the Ross Sea Shore Party, with his contemporary ownership details on the front flyleaf: 'R W Richards ITAE 1914-17'. The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17 comprised two teams, the Weddell Sea party in the 'Endurance' and the Ross Sea party in the 'Aurora'. 'An essential aspect of Shackleton's scheme for crossing the Antarctic was that a second and quite separate expedition should establish a base on the Ross Sea to provide support for the transantarctic party and establish forward depots'. Things went horribly wrong for both parties, with the 'Endurance' fragmenting under the pressure of being locked in the ice of the Weddell Sea, resulting in the famous journey of survival that culminated in the epic voyage of the 22-foot boat 'James Caird' to South Georgia Island. Shackleton then learned that the men of the Ross Sea party were stranded on Ross Island, 'Aurora' having been torn from its moorings during a severe storm at the onset of the previous winter and being unable to return. When the relief expedition finally reached them, three members of the party had perished. Shackleton returned 'to England in May 1917 and dictated the text of the popular account of the expedition to Edward Saunders, largely from recollection. Final editing was carried out by Leonard Hussey, with personal accounts by Mackintosh, Stenhouse and others, and the book was finally published in 1919' (Howgego, Volume 3). 'This exploit, which has captured the modern imagination, certainly struck the world differently in 1919; in the aftermath of the First World War feats of extraordinary heroism were thick on the ground, and so Shackleton's truly remarkable tale of survival at the extremes of human endurance largely fell flat. This is emphasised in the book's production: the first issue contained cheap paper prone to severe browning, a poorly crafted binding likely to split at the joints with normal usage and silver printing on the binding subject to oxidizing' (The Taurus Collection, 2001). The Ross Sea party remained stranded until January 1917, when 'Aurora', which had been repaired and refitted in New Zealand, arrived to rescue them. Public recognition of their efforts was slow in coming, but in due course four Albert Medals were awarded to members of the party, two posthumously. Richard Walter Richards (1893-1985) was one of those awarded the Albert Medal in 1923 for his efforts on the ice to save the lives of two of his comrades; this award was converted in 1971 to the George Cross. He outlived all other members of the expedition, and became the last survivor of the 'Heroic Age' of Antarctic exploration. A contemporary review by Peter Schledermann in the journal 'Arctic' of the 2003 reprint of Richards' personal account, 'The Ross Sea Shore Party, 1914-17' (first published in 1962), is less sanguine: 'The account of the Ross Sea Party remains vastly overshadowed by Shackleton's "Endurance" calamity. The fact that three men, and very nearly the entire party, died while carrying out their part of Shackleton's lofty trans-Antarctic plans may further explain the relative obscurity of this episode, as it somewhat tarnishes the heroic shine of Shackleton's efforts'. Dargestellt auf seinen hier angebotenen Lithographien sind Tanzszenen der aus Sankt Petersburg stammenden Ausdruckstänzerin, Choreographin und Tanzpädagogin Edith von Schrenck. Im Zuge der Oktoberrevolution 1917 verließ sie mit ihrer Familie Russland und startete von München aus, wo sie vermutlich auch Otto Heinrich Strohmeyer kennen lernte, ihre Tanzkarriere. Sie debütiert nach etwa einem Jahr intensiver eigener Tanzstudien in den Kammerspielen, um anschließend mit ihren Solotänzen auf Tournee durch ganz Europa zu gehen. Im Mai 1919 traf sie während eines Gastspiels in Frankfurt am Main auf den Schriftsteller Waldemar Bonsels, der für sie zur großen Liebe und zum Mentor wurde. - Die Mappe leicht gebrauchsspurig, die Tafeln sauber und frisch!

      1919. Hi, Here we have a rare 1919 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. In my opinion the rarest 20th Century Wisden Hardback. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to both the front and the spine. The boards are excellent, the bok seems a bit warped but a heavy book on top should cure that , a bobbling line to the front cover to the right with a slight knock to the right of the front board. Inside the hinges are very good, very tightly bound. The yellow pastedowns are good, it looks like a bookplate has been removed from the first page, you need to look close but I would say it has been. HD Swan to the right yellow page. Internally very good, Minimal foxing. Nice photoplate. Couple of pages have dog ears. A lovely book, a few niggles but still fabulous. Rare,

        Siuru I, II, and III (complete series)

      Kirjanikkude Ühingu, Tallinn and Tartu 1919 - Quartos (27 × 19.2 cm). Later buckram bindings, preserving original pictorial wrappers by Nikolai Triik and Ado Vabbe (front and back); 148, [2]; 115, [4]; and 134 pp. Three full-page illustrations by Triik (volume I), six full-page drawings, of which one in red and black, and one vignette by Vabbe, as well as his publisher's and series device (volume II); Vabbe's wrapper design once reproduced within (volume III). Resized to bindings; one volume with owner signature and some foxing to wrappers; else very good, clean copies. Complete run of this short-lived expressionist-influenced anthology by the eponymous Estonian literary group, published from 1917-19. Centered around the leading modernist poet Marie Under, the "Siuru" group consisted of bohemian spirits whose work emphasized sensual experience and joyous optimism. Among its members were Friedebert Tuglas, Arthur Adson, August Gailit, Henrik Visnapuu and Johannes Semper. In addition to these writers' works, the anthology also contains poetry by Johannes Barbarus, Rudolf Reimann, Arthur Valdes, Jaan Oks, Aleksander Tassa, Richard Roht and Johannes Aavik. Work in translation includes writing by Georg Heym, Franz Werfel, and Paul Boldt, Aubrey Beardsley, Zigmunt Krasinski, and Emile Verhaeren The group took its name from the mythological fire bird "Siuru" that appears in the Estonian national epic "Kalevipoeg". Its members were very visible in Tallinn, meeting not only in Under's salon, but also in Tallinn's coffee houses, and some members had a reputation for rebellious behavior. Wrappers by Nikolai Triik in an expressionist style that corresponds to the aesthetics of some of the "Siuru" writers: "Es wäre falsch, die Siuru-Gruppe in eine ästhetisierende Ecke abzudrängen, die sich nicht darum kümmerte, was in der Welt um sie herum geschah. Schon die Illustrationen von Nikolai Triik im ersten Album wiesen in die Richtung eines Expressionismus im Sinne einer Anklage gegen die Unmenschlichkeit der Welt" (Hasselblatt 418). The first issue was printed in 780 copies, of which 40 copies were printed on Alexandria paper, numbered (these copies all unnumbered). No papier copies in North America: KVK, OCLC show a copy of the first volume at Munich, a complete run at the Finish National Library and a microfilm at New York Public Library.
