With the 'Aurora' in the Antarctic 1911-1914

London: Andrew Melrose, Ltd.,, 1919. London: Andrew Melrose, Ltd.,, 1919. Octavo. Original blue buckram, title gilt to the spine and to the upper board together with a ship portrait. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 40 other plates, 5 maps as plates, numerous diagrams, sketches and maps to the text, some full-page, folding map at the rear. Spine lettering oxidised, frontispiece with some short splits at the fore-edge, now professionally repaired, endpapers differentially browned, light toning and some marginal foxing, but overall very good in slightly rubbed and soiled jacket, lacking a few chips, but largely pictorially and textually complete. First edition. An uncommon book, particularly so in the jacket. "As captain of the Aurora during Mawson's 1911-14 expedition, Davis was able to produce one of the few first-hand accounts available in print. His publishers, however, clearly had wartime difficulties with the book, most often seen today with its gilt lettering and decoration badly faded" (Taurus). This is a very well-preserved copy with the design to the upper board still bright, and the attractive jacket largely intact.

A heartfelt memorial, this is a collection of letters and poems of Second Lieutenant Dinsmore Ely, written to his family in Winnetka, Illinois, during World War I. At the outbreak of the war, he volunteered in the American Ambulance Field Service so that he might secure immediate passage to France and go at once into active service. Arriving there on the fourth of July, 1917, on the sixth he volunteered and was accepted the same day, in the Lafayette Flying Corps. Shot down while flying in his Spad over France (near Villacoublay) on April 21, 1918, he died in a Paris hospital and was buried in Des Gonard's Cemetery, at Versailles.         My Man Jeeves

London, George Newnes, Limited, [1919].. London, George Newnes, Limited, [1919]., 1919. FIRST EDITION, first impression [Butler and Tanner Printers]. Octavo, pp. 251 + 2 ads. Publisher's red cloth, titled and decorated in black to spine. A used copy showing some acceptable wear and soiling, cheap paper toned as usual, bookplate to pastedown, stained to inside gutters. Remains a respectable copy. 'My Man Jeeves' introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is cool-headed and poised. McIlvaine A22a

Autograph Letter Signed, in French, 3 separate onion skin pages, Barcelona, Dec. 22, 1952

In his large and readable handwriting, Miro writes to ballerina and actress Tamara Tourmanova (1919 ? 1996). "Dear friend, I am writing to you in the hope that, in this holiday period, these words will reach you at home. I have learned...that you will indeed come to Barcelona. All of us will be happy about it...my dear Tamara,,,here is what I wanted to ask you. You know how proud I am to have worked on 'Children's Games' with you at the beginning of your glorious career, how rhythm and music have influenced my work ever since, and how I have been thinking of producing another ballet with you...I am working on a show of my recent work to be held in Paris this summer. At that time a book will be published on my work in several languages. The book would have a big print run...Mr. Maeght, the publisher and owner of the gallery, was really taken with the idea...The point is not to make literature but simply to talk about our work and our collaboration, which, in spite of our being away from each other, remains very real and contemporary...Pilar and Dolores join me in sending you our best wishes for a Joyeux Noel and a happy new year...." He signs with the familiar last name only, "Miro." Miro includes his wife and daughter in the holiday wishes.

It is immediately clear that Rackham is a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humour by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going. Silhouette books, even with additional colours had lower production costs than their colour plate equivalents, and so were an attractive option both for publishers and customers in the uncertain post-war market." (James Hamilton. Arthur Rackham, A Biography, p. 188).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 49-50. Riall, pp. 134-135.Hamilton, p. 189

THE SCOTTISH BEEKEEPER Volumes 1-79 Inclusive1919-2002

The Scottish Beekeepers' Association, 1919. A virtually complete run from the inception of the magazine in 1919 through to 2002 i.e. 84 years: The Official Organ of the Scottish Beekeepers' Association.. The early issues are particularly rare and all with their original printed paper covers. Seemingly missing just five montly parts: - December 1951, Jan 1990, Feb & Nov 1991 and Dec. 2002 (we have had a very good look through and may have missed one or two other absent months, but this was all we found). The year 1964 is duplicated - one set of 12 months is bound and not particularly good examples and the duplicate set are loose in their original parts and very good. The first 30 or so years are tastefully and well bound in modern half black cloth with hand-marbled paper boards and cream end papers, a couple of years are sewn together but unbound (the spines of the bound volumes have not been blocked and the presence of a few sewn but unbound years indicates that the binding of this run was not completed - a few boards and sheets of matching marbled paper are also included in this set). Generally in very good condition, a few years in the late 1950s are somewhat worn to the edges, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule. It is unlikely that more than a handful of the early original monthly parts survive and therefore complete runs such as this are likely to be extremely scarce.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to.

        Verbannte [Exiles]

Rascher & Cie. Zurich: Rascher & Cie.. 1919. The first German edition of Joyce's play Exiles and the first of his works to be published in translation in any language. One of 600 copies printed, Slocum & Cahoon D44. Joyce was living in Zurich at the time and he paid for the publication of this book out of his own pocket. This copy is inscribed by the author: "To J.R. [sic] Watson, Jun / with grateful regards / James Joyce / 8. ix. 1919." J.S. Watson, Jr. was at the time the co-owner of the modernist literary journal The Dial, which he bought from Martyn Johnson with his friend and fellow Harvard graduate, Scofield Thayer. Watson became president of the magazine and Thayer became its editor. The "grateful regards" refers to a gift of $300 that Watson had sent Joyce earlier in the year at the urging of Thayer, who had himself sent Joyce $700. These sums bailed Joyce out of dire financial straits, allowed him to settle a court case against him, and helped him support the theater group that he had associated with in Zurich, the English Players. In 1920 The Dial published a piece by Joyce, and in 1921 Thayer was one of his most ardent and influential supporters in the censorship case in New York against Ulysses and its publication in the Little Review. A notable association copy of Joyce's first translation. Pages browned and acidified, and covers strengthened at all the edges and spine with tape, with a hole cut in the spine for the title to show through. The first blank, on which the inscription appears, is also strengthened at the edges with tape. Fragile, and a candidate for de-acidification, but a significant association copy from a critical point in Joyce's life and career. . First Edition. Softcover.
