        ONE DAY MORE

1919 - [1 of 24 copies signed by Conrad] A Play in One Act. (London: The Beaumont Press, 1919.) Original patterned boards with vellum spine, with cover label. Beaumont Press edition, of which this is one of 24 numbered copies printed on Japan vellum and signed by Conrad (this is copy #19). There were also 250 unsigned copies, numbered 25-274, printed on hand-made paper and with a cloth rather than vellum spine. Conrad's story "To-Morrow" was included in his 1903 volume TYPHOON AND OTHER STORIES. He then dramatized the tale as "One Day More," and it was performed (but not published) in 1904. It appeared in the August 1913 issue of the English Review, but did not appear in book form (25 privately-printed copies) until 1917, after which came this 274-copy edition -- the sixth book published by the Beaumont Press. ONE DAY MORE was not broadly available until 1924, when it was published together with Conrad's play "Laughing Anne." This is a fine copy, essentially as new. Cagle A20b(1). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: A. & C. Black, Ltd., 1919 - Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket.         THE MELLSTOCK EDITION OF THE WORKS OF THOMAS HARDY

, 1919. 1919. [with all 37 dust jackets] In Thirty-Seven Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1919-1920. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt, with dust jackets. The Mellstock Edition of Hardy's works, limited to 500 numbered sets, signed by Hardy in the first volume. Though the "Wessex Novels" may be important for the changes Hardy made to his early novels, and though the "Wessex Edition" may be the so-called "definitive edition," this is the most sumptuous and sought-after of Hardy sets. Most of the novels occupy two full volumes, the text is printed on paper watermarked with Hardy's initials, and the bindings have elaborate gilt acorn-and-oak leaf decoration on the spines (in addition to Hardy's gilt-embossed monogram on the front covers). Hardy and Macmillan had planned this edition since 1914 (tentatively titled "The Casterbridge Edition"), but production was postponed during the Great War. Hardy made a few very minor changes in some of the works, but specifically altered the geography of his novel A PAIR OF BLUE EYES...~"to correct the topography a little," he wrote to Sydney Cockerell, "the reasons that led me to disguise the spot when the book was written in 1872 no longer existing, the hand of death having taken care of that." The reference is to the first Mrs. Hardy, who had died in 1912... [Purdy]~These volumes are in fine, bright condition, with the leaves still unopened. Amazingly, all 37 volumes still retain their original dust jackets -- which carry the same elaborate spine decoration as the binding (but blue-on-white rather than gold-on-blue). At the bottom of each jacket's spine is the set's price, "37 Vols. £33 6s."; the rear panel bears an advertisement for the set, also indicating that the volumes are available at "18 s. net each." The jackets are generally in very good condition, with very minor edgewear (the top and bottom edges have been reinforced unnecessarily from the backside); one of the 37 jackets has a hole in its spine, but this has been made scarcely-evident by virtue of a loosely-inserted facsimile behind it. One sees the Mellstock Edition in original cloth, and one sees it rebound in leather, but one scarcely ever sees it still with its original dust jackets. Among sets with dust jackets still in private hands, there are only three of which we are aware, this being one of them. Purdy pp 287-288.

Siberian Intervention Interest - ???? [Guntai techo Military Pocket Book]

, Taisho 8. [1919].. Taisho 8. [1919].. 26 leaves, 6 leaves with handwritten notes, some full page, follow the printed leaves of obligations and responsibilities that are standard in these books which were issued to each serviceman. Bound in canvas with printed covers there are some light occasional marks and soiling, very good copy. 12.8 x 8.2cm. This military pocket book belonged to Higaki Mosaku ????. Each Japanese soldier or sailor was required to carry his military pocket book, which was his ID document as well as military CV. The first two-thirds of the pages are the following printed texts: Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors (1882) by Meiji Emperor, Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors (1912) by Taisho Emperor, Imperial Rescript for Reservists (1914) by Taisho Emperor, Military Codes and an oath to obey those codes, and instructions in regard to a military pocket book. Imperial Rescript to Soldiers and Sailors (1926) by Showa Emperor was inserted after Taisho Emperor's rescript. The rest of the pages shows Higaki's personal information. Higaki Mosaku from Yamaguchi Prefecture was born in 1896. He was enlisted in the Imperial Japanese army on December 1st, 1916 serving until the 15th of November, 1918. He was a machine gunner, a 1st class private, in 74th Infantry Regiment, 19th Division. He was called for service again on the 6th of August, 1919 this time serving in the 42nd Infantry Regiment until the 18th of September 1920. During 1918 and 1919 he served in Northern Manchuria. From late August in 1919 he was posted to such places in Siberia as Nerchinsk, Sretensk, Borzya, and so on. On the 1st of December, 1919 he was promoted to superior private. In August 1920 he was hospitalised and returned to Japan on September 13, 1920. He was released from the army on September 15th, 1920 although he performed some subsequent duty as a reserve. This pocket book contains an insert showing Imperial rescription from 1926. The Siberian Intervention is a conflict which, although not well known in the West had some significant consquences in twentieth century world history. The participating western powers had three main objectives: to stop the stockpile of Allied arms falling into either Bolshevik or German hands; to restore the Tsar and to rescue the Czech Legion. There was considerable argument in Japan concerning whether or not to take part in the Intervention, but compelling arguments, including the desire to establish Siberia as a buffer state between Japan and Bolshevik Russia was certainly one of the attractions. It has also been argued that this conflict prepared the Japanese people for a vision of an empire enabling democracy to be put to one side in the years to come. The problems caused within the relationship between Japan and the USA, when the American forces, due to a slip up in communication, appeared to withdrawn early, also fueled long standing Japanese feelings of mistrust towards its powerful Pacific neighbour. Siberian Intervention pocket books are quite scarce. .

Sweden's Laureate: Selected Poems of Verner Von Heidenstam [Signed / Ingraverat] WAS $4,250

New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1919. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED 30%. WAS $4,250. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (some surface rubbing to the boards, rubbing to the board corners, bump and minor wrinkling to the upper leading corner of each board), in a Very Good example of the scarce dust jacket (modest edge wear and a few small edge tears, fold line at the bottom of each panel and the spine tail, tiny closed concertina tear and nearby tiny indent, light sunning to the spine, some foxing), SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM on the title page and ALSO SIGNED BY CLARE BOOTHE LUCE on the front free endpaper. Swedish Poet and Novelist Verner Von Heidenstam, known for the joy of life shown in his prose and poetry, won the 1916 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his significance as the leading representative of a new era in our literature". The leader of his generation of Swedish Poets, and ranked among the masters of Swedish Literature, von Heidenstam regenerated Swedish Poetry, abandoning the then-prevalent realistic school of Swedish Poetry and its gloomy works, and introducing imagination and the value of appreciating beauty for its own sake. Thus, in presenting the Prize to von Heidenstam, the noted Swedish critic Sven Söderman stated: "In the constellation of original artists who regenerated Swedish poetry at the end of the last century, Verner von Heidenstam was the most brilliant star. He was the leader of the generation of poets of 1890; he was the first to set forth in theory and also to realize in his works the ideal of new Swedish generations." Söderman also noted that von Heidenstam's first poetic work, "Vallfart och vandringsår" (1888) ["Pilgrimage: The Wander Years"], "...marked an epoch in the modern literature of Sweden. In truth it gave the final blow to the realistic school, enemy of all imagination, which was then dominant in Sweden and which since 1880 had darkened literature with its sadness and its gloom. This was the first manifestation of a new poetry in which free individuals, led only by the logic of their imagination, worshipped beauty for its own sake. " (The book herein described includes work from "Vallfart och vandringsår" (1888) as well as from "Dikter" (1895) [Poems] and from "Nya Dikter" (1915) [New Poems], presenting approximately one-fourth of the work presented in those three volumes.) The interior of the book is in superior condition with the leaves being quite clean and bright. A number of leaf-pairs remain uncut at the bottom, indicating that the book likely has not been read -- certainly not in its entirety. Having a notable Provenance, this copy belonged to editor, playwright, journalist, ambassador, socialite, and U.S. Congresswoman (representing Connecticut) Clare Boothe Luce and carries her elegant possession signature to the front free endpaper. Signed copies of von Heidenstam's work in any language and in any edition are extraordinarily scarce. In our experience, his signed books are among the scarcest of all those of the Nobel Prize in Literature winners. On our most recent check, the auction records revealed no signed copies of Verner von Heidenstam's works in any language appearing at auction in the past 39 years, beyond which the records do not go. A Very Good copy of this quite scarce assemblage of Verner von Heidenstam's works, being only the second book of von Heidenstam's work to be published in English translation, having an excellent Provenance, and having been SIGNED BY THE PRIOR OWNER, CLARE BOOTHE LUCE and, most notably, SIGNED BY VERNER VON HEIDENSTAM. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

The Economic Consequences of the Peace

London: Macmillan & Co., , 1919.. London: Macmillan & Co., 1919. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. One of the rarest Keynes titles to locate in the original dust jacket. During World War I, Keynes joined the Treasury, where his influence rose rapidly. As a Treasury Representative, Keynes participated in the Paris Peace Conference, where he could observe all the leading figures at first hand. The result was The Economic Consequences of the Peace, a devastating critique of the peace treaty and a brilliant piece of writing. It made its author world famous overnight. He was now the most influential financial journalist, an opinion leader governments had to reckon with" (Niehans, A History of Economic Theory).

        The Moon and Sixpence

London: William Heinemann, 1919. London: William Heinemann, 1919 First edition, first issue, with four pages of ads. Signed and inscribed by the author to the half-title page: "by W. Somerset Maugham / for Robert Partridge / 24 October 1946". Publisher's olive green cloth, lettered and decorated in black, four pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A near fine copy, with some wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, light toning to pages as usual. Overall, a tight copy of a scarce book, inscribed. Stott A22. The Moon and Sixpence is a novel about the dual blessing and curse of artistic talent, loosely based on the life of French artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), an important Post-Impressionist and leader of the Primitivism movement that championed a return to the pastoral. The plot, narrated in first person and told in episodic form, tells the story of Charles Strickland, a middle-aged London stockbroker with a passionate interest in art. Early on, Strickland abruptly leaves his wife and family to move to Paris and pursue a career in art. Driven by a voracious need to express himself artistically, Strickland lives in poverty and sickness, which he seemingly doesn't mind as long as he continues to create artwork, although his work would not be appreciated until after his death. The novel's final episode places the narrator in Tahiti, where Strickland had been living with a young native woman while continuing to produce art. While there are notable differences between Gauguin and Strickland, The Moon and Sixpence provides a unique glimpse into Gauguin's life and inspirations. On a larger note, it presents the consuming struggle of an artist's passion, and the influence of benevolent and evil forces. As Maugham writes, "the adulation of his admirers is perhaps no less capricious than the disparagement of his detractors; but one thing can never be doubtful, and that is he had genius.". Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

The Riddle of the Ruthvens and Other Studies

Edinburgh - W. Green and Son, 1919. Edinburgh - W. Green and Son, 1919 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. First edition ofthis selection of true crime stories from a criminology obsessive. Appears to be inscribed by the author on the half-title: 'for the Rev. C. J. Butler, with many fond wish, from Will Roughead, Christmas 1944'. With a frontispiece and twelve further plates. Binder's label of M. Salah A'Adami, Baghdad. Bookseller's label to Wildy and Sons, London. William Roughead (18701952) was a well-known Scottish lawyer and amateur criminologist, as well as an editor and essayist on matters criminous. He was an important early practitioner of the modern true crime literary genre. Roughead held the title of Writer to Her Majesty's Signet, roughly equivalent in Scottish law to the position of solicitor. As the years progressed, Roughead practised law less and increasingly plied a trade as an unofficial historian of crime. He marks this transition from the year 1889, when at the age of nineteen, he skipped his apprentice work at the law firm of Maclaren and Traquair to attend the trial of Jessie King, the murderous baby-farmer of Stockbridge (an experience he described in his essay My First Murder: Featuring Jessie King, In Queer Street, 1932). For roughly the next six decades, Roughead attended almost every murder trial of any importance at the High Court of Justiciary. These experiences provided the material he would submit for publication in the Juridical Review, a monthly Scottish legal journal; in later years, he would collect his contributions to the Juridical Review as well as much new material into several anthologies of essays. Condition: Ina half calf binding. Externally sound although rubbed. Front hinge slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean but with light foxing to the pages adjacent to the plates, including title. Blanklabel to front pastedown. Overall: GOOD.

        My Man Jeeves

Newnes, 1919. Newnes, 1919. 1st edition, first printing. Hardcover. Considering its age and the fragility of its production, this copy is in very good condition. The original wine-red boards are a little rubbed, the spine slightly faded, the extremities slightly bumped. The pages are free of any foxing, a little tanned as is common, with a small mark on part of the top block; the inner margins of the endpapers are slightly darkened, there is a small bookseller's blindstamp on the fep, but there are no other introduced markings, and Butler & Tanner are the printers, further signifying the true first edition. The great Jeeves makes his first appearance in book form here, in four of the short stories within. A very good copy of a very scarce item - with the added bonus of a Victorian-style Christmas card with Wodehouse's signature on the inside.
