        Picture Show (Limited Edition)

Cambridge: Privately Printed for the Author by J.B. Peace at the University Press, Cambridge, 1919 Unpaginated. Privately Printed for the Author by J.B. Peace at the University Press, Cambridge, and limited to 200 copies. Text is clean and unmarked except for a small patch of light brown off setting at poem 17, that appears to be from a newspaper clipping or bookmark. Previous owner has laid in a small print of Sassoon on the first blank page, and has a brief pencil note below it. Covers with light soiling and the paper title label is intact. The bookplate of W.A. Harding - Madingley, is on the front paste down endpaper. Harding (1870-1942) inherited Madingley Hall from his father in 1924, and the property was eventually sold to Cambridge University in 1948. Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) is best remembered for his angry and compassionate poems of the First World War, which brought him public and critical acclaim. Avoiding the sentimentality and patriotism of many other war poets, Sassoon wrote of the horror and brutality of trench warfare and contemptuously satirized generals, politicians, and churchmen for their incompetence and blind support of the war. Much of his earlier work (1906-15) was privately printed and availability remains limited. This work predates the 1920 U.S. Dutton publication and has seven fewer poems.. Limited Edition - 200 Copies. 8vo. Vg+/No Jacket. Hard Cover.

Occasional penciled or penned price emendation. on printed text leaves. Withal, a Very Good copy.. Early edition of this beautifully illustrated trade catalogue, which was premiered by the famed California Perfume Company -- predecessor to Avon -- at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition. These large colour plate catalogues for their salesmen met with huge success, even though they were very expensive. The gorgeous plates illustrated beautiful art nouveau inspired bottles, packages, and advertising for perfumes, soaps, shampoos, cold creams, talcum powders, tooth paste, gift sets, and more. For the first few years, they were released with the screw-back post binders, allowing product pages to be removed, or added if needed, so the salesmen did not have to buy another catalogue just to replace a few products. Originally released with 40 colour plates in 1915/1916, the plates only illustrated the separate products, and the price lists were provided in California Perfume Company small supplement catalogues. However, by 1919, the smaller catalogues had been discontinued, and salesmen with these large colour plate catalogues inserted in-between leaves with product information. From 1920 to 1923, the number of colour plates was reduced to 36, with the explanatory leaves providing continuous pagination, however, the screw-back binders were eliminated, so that salesmen were required to buy new catalogues. . Colour-illustrated lithograph title, 20 colour plates [printed both sides], with linen numbered thumb tabs at fore-edges as issued. With 3 additional plates from the earlier 1915 CPC catalogue bound-in, along with folding brochure for American Ideal Gift assortment.

The Young Visiters, or Mr. Saltenna's Plan [Signed and Contemporarily Dated]

London: Chatto & Windus, 1919. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing in the Publisher's original marbled boards and black cloth spine (some small nicks to the paper at the boards' top edges, and some shelf wear with some loss to the paper at the boards' bottom edges, tiny surface nick to the front board, evidence of removal of presumed prior bookplate from the front pastedown), in a Very Good example of the scarce dust jacket (small tears and chips to the edges, spine toned and showing some surface rubs, small tape repair to the upper spine's verso), SIGNED AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY DAISY ASHFORD on the half-title as follows: "Daisy Ashford / Nov. 15th 1919" [with the date partially underscored by Ashford]; a novella about early 20th Century English Upper Class, written in 1890 when the author was only 9 years of age and published 29 years later with an introduction by J. M. Barrie who stated: "It seems to me to be a remarkable work for a child, remarkable even in its length and completeness, for when children turn author they usually stop in the middle, like the kitten when it jumps". Ashford came across her youthful work when she was 36 and lent it to an ill friend for her entertainment. The manuscript ultimately made its way to writer Frank Swinnerton who also worked as a reader for Chatto and Windus. Swinnerton grew quite enthusiastic about the book, leading to its publication in its original juvenile form (with only one change: the revision of "Viseters" in the title to "Visiters"). The book was an immediate success, with four UK editions being issued in the first month -- and at least seventeen impressions being issued in the year of publication, leading to the publication of additional novels and short stories, the last of which was published in 1983, a decade after her death. Signed copies of the book in the first edition, first impression, as is the copy herein described, are quite scarce to the market and copies signed and dated in the year of publication are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy in the scarce dust jacket, SIGNED AND CONTEMPORARILY DATED BY DAISY ASHFORD. QUITE SCARCE.

        Liegender Frauenakt.

        A Modern Briton

, 1919 1919. Cloth. Very Good. Patriotic World War One poem, "The Man who Keeps his Head", illuminated with exquisite vignettes. Oblong, 24.5 by 31 cm. With eight plates, including title page, plus painted vignette on final leaf. These vingette watercolors, four to eight per page, depict the diversity of British experience, whether its variety of industry, its trades, its modes of farming, its ships, etc. The efffect is panoramic and epic, a visual equivalent to Noel Coward's sweep in "Cavalcade", say. Framing it all are Art Nouveau devices and ornament, very much true to the period. The book was easily of publishable quality, and its creation demonstrates that a strain of patriotism and optimism somehow withstood the bitterness and cynicism engendered by the war. Tissue guards with creases, and one with tear. Binding bowed. Other light wear.&

Paris: Librairie Hachette, [1919]. French Edition de Luxe. Limited to 500 copies signed by the illustrator, of which this is no. 378. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches; 286 x 225 mm.). 110, [2, blank] pp. Mounted color frontispiece with color pictorial border and tissue guard. Three double-page silhouette drawings with color, one single-page silhouette drawing with color (not included in the trade edition), thirteen single-page silhouette drawings without color, and thirty-six silhouette drawings in the text. Title with color pictorial border. Original cream parchment over boards, pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial end-papers in green and white. A fine copy."Rackham gave his talk to on Silhouettes to the Art Workers' Guild in November 1919, the month in which Cinderella, the first of his two great silhouette books, was published. Cinderella and The Sleeping Beauty differed from Rackhams' preceding books in relying almost wholly for their effect on silhouette. It is immediately clear that Rackham is a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humour by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going. Silhouette books, even with additional colours had lower production costs than their colour plate equivalents, and so were an attractive option both for publishers and customers in the uncertain post-war market."         Die drei Zwillinge - Regiebuch [ Manuscript ]

Berlin: Vbd. Deutscher Buhnenschriftsteller, 1919 Unique. A very good copy with some overall wear. 8vo.,. There are mtd. watercolors and photographs. An elaborate prompt book for the Weimar era farce ' Die drei Zwillinge ' one of the earliest productions of the very successful playwright partnership of Impekoven and Mathern. The play is 100 printed pages. Each leaf of the printed text of the play was carefully tipped ( along its inner margin ) on to a blank sheet. Each page of text is accompanied by elaborate stage directions and alterations or corrections to the text and has accompanying diagrams of the stage. Mounted as the frontis. to the volume is a large original watercolor of the stage design for the production at the theater in Dusseldorf ( it is titled : Dekorationsplan Schauspielhaus Dusseldorf ). The play was a pronounced success and there are accompanying mounted photographs of the stage for a production in Cassel ( at the Kleinen Theater ) in July 1920 and then at the Munich Volkstheater. The stage directions, designs, notes, and ammendments along with the mounted memorabilia comprise an elaborate and detailed prompt book. It is from the earliest period of the decade of experimental theater and cabaret in Germany; the play was staged during a year of tumult and revolution in the country. An exceptional artifact.

        Snickerty Nick

1919. One of the Rarest of all the Books Illustrated by Arthur Rackham[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. Snickerty Nick. By Julia Ellsworth Ford. Rhymes by Witter Bynner. New York: Moffat, Yard & Co., 1919.First edition. Quarto. Three full-page color plates and ten full-page black and white drawings. Original light blue cloth with pictorial stamping on the front cover in black, spine lettered in black. Original pictorial dustwrapper reproducing the color-plate opposite page 30 (Dance of Winter and Gnomes). Dust jacket with a few small closed tears otherwise a fine copy."The idea of the Selfish Giant in this play has been taken from the story of Oscar Wilde's Selfish Giant. Spring would not come to his garden because he would not let the children play in it. It was always winter there. One morning he woke up hearing the music of a linnet singing in his garden. He jumped out of bed and saw a most wonderful sight, "flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing," and in every tree was a little child; but one little boy was too tiny to climb the tree and the Giant's heart melted and he helped the little child into the tree. The little child kissed him and forever after the children played in the Giant's garden, because his heart had softened through love of the little child. The children never saw the child again. But one day he came to the Giant, who saw on the palms of the child's hands "the prince of two nails and the prince of two nails were on the little feet". The little child had come to take the Giant to play in his garden, "which is Paradise." My indebtedness to this story is the character of the Selfish Giant. The little play of Snickerty Nick is not a dramatization of The Selfish Giant. The character of Snickerty Nick is an original character and the play centers around him. The little boy is only a loving and beloved child, and Spring and Winter are personified by faeries and gnomes. To Arthur Rackham I tender my most sincere thanks whose magic touch, as in Peter Pan, Grimm's Faery Tales and Undine, making real all faeries and gnomes, endears all child life to grown-ups as well as to children."
