A LA SANTE DU CORPS. POEME PAR MAURICE VLAMINCK, DECORE PAR ANDRE DERAIN. Signed

Paris: François Bernouard, 1919 Rare first edition. Thin 4to., unpaginated [24] + printed stiff card covers. 1 of only 104 numbered copies [4 on Japon & 100 on Arches]. This copy lettered "G" & signed by Derain although no lettered copies are indicated which might account for a possible 26 additional copies printed]. Designed with four full page black & white Derain illustrations. A bit of offsetting to the prelims, heavy cover stock mildly aged with light soiling. Very uncommon. Vlaminck's satirical 'poeme' about "life" has 4 chapter headings in French: Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter - Derain's "Fauve" sketches illustrate the chapters & are typical of his heavier lines - bold & thickly rendered. A fine example of Fauvism in spirit & illustration. A movement said to have begun in June 1909 when Vlaminck first met Andre Derain at Chatou resulting in the formation of the school of Chatou & ultimately the birth of Fauve art - joined formatively by the likes of; Matisse, Gaugin, Van Dongen, Camoin, Dufy, Marquet & others. The important collaboration between Derain & de Vlaminck was not a solitary happening as their association & friendship lasted a lifetime resulting in many important works. "Quand c'est le printemps et qu'on n'a pas d'argent ça a moins d'importance qu'a quarante ans On court après la blonde on prend la brun on a vingt ans aux prunes.. 1st Edition.

        L'ÉVANGILE PAR L'IMAGE

[Paris]: Imprimé pour Charles Meunier, 1919. No. 7 OF 13 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES printed on blue paper WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF THE WOODCUTS AND AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, from a total edition of 165 copies n. Hardcover. 346 x 248 mm (13 5/8 x 9 3/4"). 2 p.l., 57 pp. No. 7 OF 13 SPECIALLY BOUND COPIES printed on blue paper WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF THE WOODCUTS AND AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR, from a total edition of 165 copies. DISTINCTIVE BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO BY CHARLES MEUNIER (signed "Ch. Meunier '21" at foot of front panel and stamp-signed "Ch. Meunier 1921" on front turn-in), UPPER COVER WITH LARGE INSET "CUIR CISELÉ" PANEL DEPICTING THE CRUCIFIXION, Christ on the cross enclosed by a broad frame of thorns and lilies, the book's title at the head of the panel and the symbols of the four Evangelists in corner roundels; raised bands, gilt titling, turn-ins framed by multiple gilt rules with cornerpieces representing the Eucharist, marbled silk endleaves, marbled paper flyleaves, all edges gilt. Original printed paper wrappers preserved. In the original (damaged) chemise and housed in a later morocco-backed folding box. WITH 104 WOODCUT PLATES, comprised of 26 images (three with folding panels), all with proofs in three extra states, AND AN ORIGINAL SIGNED WATERCOLOR, all by "Kharis." Text in French and Greek. Monod 4394; Carteret IV, 152. A couple of tissue guards creased, isolated faint foxing, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, quite clean and fresh internally, and the binding entirely unworn. Because of its added illustrated material and its powerful special binding, this is a very desirable copy of the strictly limited version of this production of "The Gospel in Image." According to the limitation page, Meunier executed special "cuir-ciséle" (or "incised leather") bindings for 13 special copies, but sales results recorded in ABPC and Americana Exchange would suggest otherwise: besides the present copy, just two such bindings have been offered for sale during the last six decades (one in 2011 and one in 1969). Like ours, the latter binding was dated 1921, but it had quite a different design, while the former was dated a year later than the present copy. In light of this, one might speculate that, although Meunier was prepared to create as many as 13 special bindings to order, he may have produced significantly fewer on account of disappointing demand. In any case, our binding, which was done at the end of Meunier's stellar career, is fittingly somber in tone. The cuir ciselé panel is unpainted except for some subtle shading that enhances its convincing impression of carved wood. The text here is extracted from the 17th century biblical translation into French of Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (1613-84), a priest of Port-Royal, theologian, and humanist. He is best known for this celebrated translation, the most broadly read French Bible of the 17th and 18th centuries, popularly known as the "Bible de Port-Royal." "Kharis" was the pseudonym of Pal Burger Diether, an artist who shows significant talent here but who seems somehow otherwise to have remained obscure.

        FIRST PLAYS

      - MILNE,A.A. FIRST PLAYS. Lond.: Chatto & Windus 1919. 8vo, cloth. xii, 22p. + ads, label aged else fine (no dw). 1st ed. SIGNED BY MILNE. Contains Wurzel-Flummery, Luck One, The Boy Comes Home, Belinda and the Red Feathers. Milne began his play writing career while stationed on the Isle of Wight doing service during WWI. In the introduction Milne credits the Kaiser with helping his dramatic career. While some officers spent their free time playing bridge or golf, Milne used it to write these plays. "These five plays were written during the years 1916 and 1917. They would hardly have been written had it not been for the war. To his other responsilbilities the Kaiser now adds this volume." In a nice bit of association, it was James Barrie, already established, who helped Milne to produce one of the plays included here, Wurzel Flummery.       Budapest: Ma-Kiadas 1919 - Octavo 24.3 x 16 cm, wrappers, 32pp, 40 plates. Published in the momentous year of 1919 which saw the Hungarian Soviet Republic eruption and demise in less than five months, this is one of the more significant Ma publications under Lajos Kassák at the time and was released shortly before he and most of the Hungarian artists appearing in this book were forced into exile. In addition to surveying the noted movements in the title, Hevesy also includes works of the the Hungarian Activists operating under the banner of Kassák's Ma. Aktivizmus was strongly influenced and drew freely from the three movements under discussion. The activist artists whose works appear here include Janos Mattis-Teutsch (one woodcut), a linocut cover by Sándor Bortnyik and with photo-illustrated works by Bornyik as well. There is also a linocut by Czech Cubist Vincenc Benes which appeared in an early Ma issue, together with reproductions of works by numerous artists of the movements under discussion.         Life: The Seventeenth Grove Play of the Bohemian Club. SIGNED

San Francisco: The Bohemian Club, 1919. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. 8vo, printed stapled wrappers, pp. 60, [3]. Signed on the front flyleaf by Harry Leon Wilson, Domenico Brescia, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Warren S. Palmer. Signed at the rear of the book by William H. Smith, Joseph S. Thompson, Xavier Martinez, James Hopper, Sam Hume, Antoine de Vally, George Sterling, Ulderico Marcelli, Edwin Henry Lemare, and two others we have been unable to identify. Wraps tanned and creased, two short tears at the spine, about very good. / In the summer of 1919 Sergei Rachmaninoff was invited by his friend Sir Henry Heyman to accompany him to the Bohemian Grove in Monte Rio, California, and to attend the closing festivities of the Bohemian Club's encampment there. The weekend was marked by a Friday night "entertainment," directed by William H. Smith, and on Saturday, the final night of the season, the more formal Grove Play, "Life," written by Harry Leon Wilson and with music by Domenico Brescia (featuring what might well be the first time a set of chromatic cowbells was used as a symphony instrument). To commemorate the event, the playscript and musical notes were printed privately for members, with a complete cast list for both the Grove Play and for the "Cremation of Care," the pageant that had opened the season several weeks earlier. (The "Cremation of Care" would ultimately become standardized, but in 1919 it was written by Charles Caldwell Dobie and featured music by Edwin H. Lemare). / The signatories include novelist and playwright Wilson (he would go on to popularize the term "flapper" in his novel BUNKER BEAN), the author of the play; -- Brescia, the composer, best known in posterity for his chamber music compositions, who would return to the Grove with a second production in 1926; -- Rachmaninoff, distinguished guest; -- Palmer, President of the Bohemian Club and General Manager of the Northwest Pacific Railroad; -- Smith, long-time member and frequent director of Bohemian Grove productions; -- Thompson, president of the Pacific Electric Manufacturing Corporation, who would write the 24th Grove Play ("Wings"), produced in 1925; -- Martínez, a Mexican-born artist and bohemian who would be named to represent California in the Hall of Fame at the World's Fair of 1940; -- Hopper, a French-born writer, novelist, and college football coach (he led Nevada to its first-ever win over Stanford, in 1900), who was also a close friend of Jack London's, famously contributing his football jersey for use as a flag on the Snark for one notable voyage out of San Francisco Bay; -- Hume, a theater technician who had been the organizer of the first exhibition of stagecraft in the United States; -- de Vally, Belgian-born San Francisco voice teacher and recording artist, director of the San Francisco Grand Opera Company, and president of the SF Musicians' Club; -- Sterling, celebrated in Northern California as one of the greatest American poets (his poem "The Wine of Wizardry" has been called "the greatest poem ever written by an American author"), a significant figure in bohemian literary and artistic circles, and in the development of the artists' colony at Carmel (like Hopper, he was also friendly with Jack London; he was additionally mentored by Ambrose Bierce, and would himself later mentor Robinson Jeffers); -- Marcelli, Ecuadorean-born composer and conductor, founder of the Rico Marcelli Symphony Orchestra, who wrote six Grove Plays, the first in 1920, the last in 1961, and who, as a conductor, made his mark leading the orchestras in silent film houses for Tivoli and Grauman throughout the teens and 20s; -- and Lemare, British-born organist and composer (he composed the Friday night event), called "the most highly regarded and highly paid organist of his generation" as well as "one of the most important composers of the late Romantic English-American Organ School." A scarce and attractive piece of ephemera commemorating a highlight from the early days of the Club.

        ARA VUS PREC

(London):: Ovid Press. (1919). First edition. Number 66 of 220 copies (of 264 total). Although the title and half-title pages have "Vus" Eliot said it was "Vos." This is the first title published by John Rodker under his Ovid Press imprint. Eliot's fourth book and an important one, as it contains "Sweeney Among the Nightingales," "Portrait of a Lady," "Preludes," et al. There were 10 unnumbered copies for review, 4 special copies, 30 signed numbered copies, and 220 numbered copies. But, in our experience, the signed copies are so rare that we wonder if there were that many. This copy has been bound in dark red leather with the title blind-stamped at bottom of front cover. The first blank page has a little darkening, just at the top edge, otherwise in fine condition.

Manuscript]: "The Twilight of the Manikins: Verses Written during the Great War"

New York 1919 - Octavo. Red cloth. Over 200 pages of manuscript war poetry written in a publisher's "dummy" volume (that is, a bound volume issued with only blank pages, the book title "The Long Gallery" by Eva Lathbury and publisher Henry Holt stamped on the cloth). Trent hand-numbered the 208 pages of poetry, the verses almost entirely in holograph (a few printed pieces pasted in and amended). The volume shows a great deal of work with portions cut and pasted in later holograph (and occasionally dated) corrections and edits, etc.Trent was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1862, the son of a surgeon in the Confederate Army of distinguished Virginia ancestry. In 1880 he began studying at the University of Virginia where he became the editor of the Virginia University Magazine. He did post-graduate study at Johns Hopkins University, after which he accepted an offer to teach at Sewanee, The University of the South where he became a professor of English and the acting professor of history from 1888 until 1900, and from 1893 was dean of the academic department. He founded and edited *The Sewanee Review* (now the longest continuously published literary quarterly in the U.S.). He also created the Sewanee Historical Society at the University of the South. In 1900, he became professor of English literature at Columbia University where he devoted himself to the study of Daniel Defoe. He edited the Cambridge History of American Literature, and published many books on literary historical subjects, many Southern, including William Gilmore Simms and Robert E. Lee.Trent published five of the earliest poems represented here from 1915 in *The Fatherland* and *The Texas Review*, but this voluminous collection of intelligent literary poetry devoted to the cataclysmic conflict appears to be largely unpublished.         Portrait]

[Glastonbury, October 9th, 1919 - A contemporary sketch of the dedicatee of The Lark Ascending, signed by her at the Glastonbury Festival, 1919. Marie Hall (1884-1956) was the outstanding violinist of her generation and it was for her that Vaughan Williams wrote this most popular piece of English music. First written in 1914, performance of The Lark was delayed by Williams' service in the Great War. He and Hall revised it together in 1920 for a piano and violin performance that year, before she performed it for the first time in a full orchestral version (under Sir Adrian Boult) later that year. Hill played a famous Stradivarius which later took her name. Watercolour portrait (194 × 116 mm), full length with violin, signed [?] 'PCMH-G' and dated, neatly mounted on card, which is signed 'Yours very sincerely / Marie Hall', framed and glazed, the verso with old manuscript note 'original drawing of Miss Marie Hall at the Glastonbury Festival Oct 9. 1919 & autographed by her.'         [Small Archive]: United Mine Workers of America Commission Signed by John L. Lewis to W.A. "Tony" Boyle, future president of the UMWA and convicted murderer of Joseph Yablonski, with related material

A small archive of documents pertaining to the organized labor career of W.A. Boyle. One of America's great power-brokers during his long life, John L. Lewis became acting president of The United Mine Workers of America in 1919. He finally retired in 1960 and was succeeded by Thomas Anderson, himself quite elderly and in failing health. When Anderson died three years later William Anthony Boyle took over the UMWA. "Tough Tony" Boyle consolidated the powers of the union president and was involved in widespread corruption. In 1969 Pennsylvania union leader Joseph Yablonski created a credible challenge to Boyle but ultimately lost, and was murdered with his wife and daughter a few days after the election. Boyle was convicted of ordering the murder and died in prison in 1985. Hollywood revisited the crime in the 1986 HBO film Act of Vengeance with Wilford Brimley portraying Boyle and Charles Bronson as Yablonski. Further details available upon request. .
